[Q] Complete Noob needs directions - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

okay so ive been scouring through these forums in search of step by step tutorials to get the latest OS for my new xperia x10 mini pro u20i that doesn't have any bugs. I've run into many terms that I'm not familiar with such as root, roms, devs, kernals, etc (please understand as i am upgrading from a 1st generation nokia flip phone )
Is there a thread that can catch me up to speed on the lingo
im also looking to install multitouch if thats possible

I have the same problem, so I made my own flippin manual
check out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117713

thanks but ill wait til someone verifies thats all correct. Hypothetically, if i were to be happy with just the official 2.1 OS, would i be able to just follow the steps of this video?

Easy and I'm a noob follow insruction can't go wrong you will need a few application 1st superoneclick for your pc , that's your start click on it root my phone ,,,,,,plug phone in to pc ,use usb debuging then you will have root then you want xrecovery from market and busybox also from market .that is recovery superuser and busybox installed then you pick a rom

If you want to stay with stock 2.1 the video is right. If you want to put some custom rom, then you must follow the flippin manual and yes it is correct. Dont worry its not that hard as it seems to be, just be sure to make backups everytime you can before and after the installation. For your data, Titanium backup will do the job, for custom rom xRecovery.

True dat

Flippin manual is good, but i don't see the point of installing both xrec and cwm. In rest it's confirmed and the video is also confirmed. It's from SE, after all

[Q] Few questions i need answered.

Hello, been having wars with my provider (signal) so now im back , there's a few questions i need answered.
1. my andriod is V2.1, Build :2.0.a.0.504, is this the best build for a generic x10i from SE?
2. Will this version support multi-touch, if it requires upgrading, will it remove my settings again?
3. Im looking at doing the beta Froyo upgrade, isnt it possible to run the SE "bloat" programs like Mediascape and timescape and creatouch on it?
4. Im trying to figure away to tunnle a connection so i dont need to use easyteether, i know Froyo has this ability with it, but how can i get 2.1 to get this? or do i still require an app on my driod to do that, as i find that the app bottlenecks it from time to time. (done tests where my Internet on pc slow, but the phone quicker)
5. i ran a rooting program, where u switched off an on ur phone, and it installed a super user program, isnt there another way to just make it super user with out having to have the super user application which i could of gotten from andriod market?
Please assist
p.s aren't you guys already working on throwing out 2.3 for the x10 already? or was it just a rummor?

Froyo has the ability built in, but SE's kernel does not support native teethering. You're stuck with 3d party teethering apps.

Rooting the phone can be done without installing SU and installin SU does not root your phone. SU is a program that tells you what other programs ask for "admin" on your phone and lets you decide if they should hav it.

I also didn`t live near americas (hell there`s atlantic ocean between us ) and i have 435 installed.
It will wipe all your thing.
Just like format c: (**** i miss that)
The best way to do everything with just one tool is flashtool. There you can do almost everything.

New to all this !

Just got a Sony Ericsson X10 and it has Android 1.6. I want to upgrade to the latest version of android and want to enable features like multi touch.. How do i upgrade my phone? I dont know anything about android and most of the posts here have just confused me
Hi - and welcome..
Go to the Sony Ericsson website and download and install SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) to your PC..
Fire that up and follow the onscreen instructions (carefully)..
That will get you upto the latest version of the firmware for your phone..
It may NOT be the latest available firmware though depending on whether your phone is customised by a specific carrier/ network?
If it doesn't upgrade you then look settings and about phone then tell us the country and customisation info in there..
Good luck..
If you're feeling brave you can root it too.. and do a load of other stuff.. (took me a while to build up the courage to get into all that side of it.. but was worth it in the end, cos phone performance can be improved dramatically)!

Greets alamode, congrats on your new X10, and welcome to xda.
First off, it's great to hear that you have at least tried to find a place to start with your Android, and I know it can be rather daunting, as well as time consuming.
- If you're only interested in official Sony Ericsson (SE) Firmwares then you can just simply connect your phone to your computer after having installed PC companion on it
and follow the instructions. This should give you the latest official rendition of Android for the X10 which is 2.1 and includes dual touch.
- If however you wish Custom Firmwares which go well beyond anything that Sony could ever offer than I would recommend after having updated through PC Companion
(above) the next step is to 'Root' your X10 which allows you greater access and control over your device and the ability to 'Flash' (install) the many custom Themes, Apps, and ofcourse Firmwares(ROM)s

This should get you started. Read, learn what you can, if you need help/have a question -------> Use the search feature built into this Forum OR even Google it!
Have fun
Thanks for the quick reply guys !..
Well yeah i heard that rooting/flashing your phone opens up a whole new world for you so im definately interested in that. i've heard Sony ericsson wont upgrade X10 to latest versions of android? Can we still update them after rooting/flashing our device?
Anyways ill update my device first from Sony ericsson then.. After that i'll have to root my device? Since i dont know much about rooting/flashing can someone just guide me as to what that is and what it does? Whats the difference between rooting and flashing?
And thanks guys you lot are helpful !

Trying to update but keep getting this : unable to install or start phone software update components
Try doing a repair first then try the upgrade..
For rooting.. go to this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906248 download Superoneclick to your pc and run it from there..
Rooting will give you access to the system files so if you start rooting around in there deleting things then it can be dangerous - but you can always reflash/ repair using SEUS.
Rooting will also give you the opportunity to install custom ROMS which you'll find on the Dev sub-forum.
Would also recommend that you install JIT once rooted, as this gives a big performance boost. You'll find that on these x10 forums too.
Alright.. This is so frustrating. Been trying to root my phone all night but not really able to get anywhere.. Here's what i did..
First i finally upgraded to 2.1.. I used another PC and somehow it didnt give me the error i was getting earlier at the other PC. Not sure what was the problem there.
After upgrading to 2.1 i decided to root. First i used the SuperOneClick file to root my phone. After rooting, I installed BusyBox and then kept installing xRecovery but with no luck. xRecovery would just not install !!! I coped the apk file and ran the install from the phone, I got the icon but after getting the icon when it comes to the installing part it just freezes and after a while i get an error which gives me 2 options, Either to force close or to wait. I tried the other method too, the pushing method using X10ModTool and that didnt work either. After lots of tries and after getting extremely frustrated i uninstalled the apps and tried to start fresh.. I unrooted my phone using SuperOneClick and decided to root using z4root. I got the icon in the menu for z4root and i clicked on permanent root.. My phone restarts but i dont see the SuperUser icon anywhere.. If i try to install BusyBox it keeps on saying that its trying to get information..
So, So extremely frustrating !
Oh and i forgot to mention that after upgrading to 2.1, my Phone seems to have become slower while swishing between screens..
Which build number version do you have as the Superoneclick is for 2.1.A.0.435 and 2.0.2.A.0.24.
2.1.A.0.435
Im just not able to get root access ! Ive tried X10 Flash Tool, Ive tried SuperOneClick, Ive tried another software as well.. I just cant seem to get the root access..
I Installed Root checker and everytime after i root i check and it says that you do not have root access.. :S
help !

Install xRecovery and then you can even upgrade your phone to 2.2 there are some good ROMS available on this forum, you can check this -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=617
Thanks. Yeah i have xrecovery installed as well.
What is basically a ROM? From my understanding its a customized firmware? If so, Which ones the best at the moment? I cannot compromise on functionality (as in i dont want that i cannot use bluetooth/camera/wifi or some other feature because of the rom). So basically i just want a stable rom in which i dont have any limitations. Also what is the advantage of using another rom anyway?
Thanks !
Okay.. ran a few of those optimizations and stuff and the phone is running a bit better. Can you guys tell me what is a good Benchmark score for Stock 2.1 on x10? im getting 33.4 MFLOPS right now.. is that alright?
I still am experiencing a little stutter in the menus, so i installed LauncherPro and that seems to have taken care of it.. I dont understand why cant i get the stutter to go away in the original home screen?
Lastly, Another problem ive been having.. My mobile is connected via USB but instead of it charging up, It is very very slowly losing charge. It went from 95% to 89% in around 45-60 minutes. Whats that all about?

For me the best 2.1 ROM so far is bluesparks, it is very fast and stable. Everything works in this ROM.
As for a 2.2 ROM, i just love wolfbreak's CM6.1.3 v4.3. Everything works except for the camcorder. For getting the camcorder to work you can download video illusion from the market. The quality wont be as good though. However this ROM is just too good. Too fast and stable with good animations.

Yeah, that is the 2.2 ROM I was talking about. Make sure you install the correct one depending on your baseband.
In order to keep everything, make a backup of your apps using titanium backup. You can then restore your apps after installing this ROM. Thats what I did.
Wolfbreak has given another way here:

Go here and get Super One click, you can also folow that tutorial but like you I was new to this and ran into a few problems following that tutorial (Very simple problems to get by but i didn't realise lol)
Any way here we go:
Things you need:
Super one click - Get it from here as this one worked for me
link2sd (off the andriod market, this alows your apps to install to sd card)
titanium backup free or pro (you can get busybox from this and also uninstall everthing you don't want on the phone but be carefull)
But first
Lets stats at the begining,
connect your phone/mount just normal connect then go here and follow the steps, after that restart your phone (Don't worry if your phone displays an error before you restart just reboot)
Now go into you settings, applications, Development then tick USB Debugging (You can also go to settings Sound and Display, Screen time Out and set it to 30 mins)
after doing so run super one click on you computer, connect your phone but select charge phone this time, then click root (If the usb conection screen reapears on your phone just re-click charge phone) and when it is done it will ask you if you want to do a test before you click yes disconect your phone reboot it, connect again in charge mode then click yes and ok to the next message then on your phone you should get a message from the super use app click allow.
righty oh asuming everything has gone well download titanium backup (free or pro, i use free lol) once installed go on it and click problem alow it with the super user, and click 'Problems?' then 'Get busybox'.
after that you'll be able to uninstall stock apps, finaly if you want your apps to gon onto your sd instead of phone memory get link2sd of the andriod market if not don't lol, once you have it go on it allow with super user and click the FAT somthing option sorry can't remember but you can't miss it (bottome one) click ok then you can sellect apps to move to your sd
and we are DONE hope this helped as I never had anyone explain in depth to me lol anyway any problems i'd be more than happy to help out
Enjoy and hope everything goes well for you

You have to go back to stock firmware and then relock the bootloader (press the restore button in S1Tool), don't use the x10blrelock from flashtool.
I hope your signal will be back by then, and i guess you'll be stuck with ROMS that run on stock kernel.

[Q] Should I upgrade to Android 2.2?

First, sorry if this has been asked, I actually did try to find the answer on my own but no I cant seem to find it.
1st: Should I upgrade to 2.2?
2nd: Are Froyo and MIUI roms similar or is one better than the other?
3rd: Are there any limitations? Such as something not working yet? Or have most major bugs been fixed?
4th: It's obvious this voids the warranty, if I need to send this thing in for repair, can the original OS be put back on?
From what I've heard 2.2 is alot better, and would most likely be welcomed, I just need my questions answered so I don't screw myself over before I do this.

1: its really up to you.
2: Regular froyo looks like stock android, miui looks more like an iphone rom. The speed and performance of the rom depends on how the Creator of the rom optimized it.
3: most things are working on most roms. On some, certain features like wifi, or GPS doesn't work, but those are mostly the roms that are in beta. I have yet to find any custom rom with a FULLY working camera.......
4: yes it can. You coould use pc companion, or SEUS, flashtool, and there's even a method to get back to stock with out using usb(if the ports broken or something...)
I switched to miui(based on froyo) because most other roms seemed kinda the same to me. Just remember to read the instructions before flashing a new rom, and check that you have the right baseband.
Happy flashing

Well the MIUI looks good.
Is there anything besides the camera that I should know about?
Also when you say not fully working camera, what do you mean?
Also my baseband says 2.1.55, so I'm assuming when someone asks for my baseband it's 55? So I need to find a rom that supports baseband 55 right?

On trips miui 1.5.5 which I am using, its smooth and fast, everything works except the camera (zoom + light not working). Its recommend to use baseband 61 or higher for best results, however I have heard of problems with 61 (but they were probably false) so I am using baseband 54, and everything seems to work. Not sure how 55 would work (and yes your baseband is 55) but you can try it, or you can flash a new baseband via flashtool.

Do you have xrecovery? That is very useful for flashing roms and such (but not basebands)
Once you have xrecovery, simply copy all of those files to you sd card, reboot, tap the back button when Sony Ericsson appears on the screen, backup, full wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe battery stats, flash the zip files in the order they recomend (you will need to flash the baseband patch) ect ....
To get it, there is a thread in the Dev section where you can download install xrecovery. EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
If you need any specific help with xrecovery, just ask

I downloaded the XRecovery Installer.
Busybox is installed.
But I get an error trying to install xRecovery, the sh command won't install says:
cp: can't stat 'sdcard/Android/data/com.zoz33.xrecoveryInstaller/busybox' No such file or directory
any idea whats wrong?
Edit: Oh I'm using the installer APK from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9561575
Should I use something else?
that happened to me the first time as well. you will have to do the manual installation as described on the xrecovery thread.
Can i use something other than root explorer thats free or do I have to pay up?
you can use any file explorer that can access the system partition, i will try to find an acceptable one now...
EDIT: File Expert from the market is acceptable
Ok I got it installed, it looks like sh was already there but I overwrote it.
I tried that thing you said, pushing the back button when I see SE, but it didn't do anything.
Hmm it can be a bit trickey sometimes... just try again. Power off/hold down power button till it vibrates/as soon as Sony Ericsson appears on the screen repeatedly tap the back button (with the arrow) until you get to the xrecovery screen. Goodluck

Still nothing.
Going to try downloading flashtool, says if I reinstall xrecovery from it I can boot directly into it.
That was my next suggestion... once your in flashtool, connect your phone then Ask Root Perms then press the xrecovery button and it should install it. Then you can press advanced>xrecovery>reboot into xrecovery or use the back button method.

I'll catch ya tomorrow in private. It's past 11pm now.
Thanks
No problem.

Mac help installing from STOCK

Hi all, hope someone can help on point in right direction.
Main question #1, trying to do everything on Parallels should I just get bootcamp installed and then report back?
Main question #2, I have the U20i Model, how do I root? I've having trouble finding a guide
Have tried my best too look for these answers.. have read up on how to installing everything needed from scratch and my final result I wanted was to get MiniCM7 installed.
I have installed parallels as I'm on Mac and I think I got my phone rooted by SuperOneClick, then moved onto installing my recovery CMW but had problems trying to do it manually with Root Browser, it would not let me move or copy the files to the right directory.
I then tried the automatic installer 5 and I get the image attached... which does not look right and I could not boot into CMW.
Would doing this all on Bootcamp make things much much easier?
[edit] also my phone is an 2011 U20i model Mini X10 mini pro, older version though without the circle style home button - AAAK 11W01

You aren't able to root your phone with superoneclick. Look in my signature for an easy tutorial (but for windows).
Maybe really install it with bootcamp or parallels, there are some test .iso files from microsoft 7 which are for 1 month or similar time and after that you have to activate. Just try it and install MiniCM7 and after that maybe buy windows 7 or if the phone runs stable then, uninstall windows 7...

Hey thanks a lot Mihahn!
Just a another quick question, can I update the firmware and then root after that? Or does the firmware update when I do all the MinimCM7 stuff?

I just realized, that your phone model is anotherone. So you can't root with my method. Please go to the u20i forum and ask there again!
I don't know if there is a MiniCM7 rom for your phone, just search there...
Sorry, but better look up here in xperia mini forum
EDIT: Superoneclick maybe works for the u20i, but I thought you have the sk17i! Thanks that you edited it!

That's the wrong guide go to u20i forum x10 mini (pro) like the link I posted earlier. Because this guide is for sk17i, st15i etc and not for your specific phone model
