Speaker too quiet - HTC EVO 3D

Why does HTC think we've got ultra sonic hearing? Full volume on my speakerphone is too quiet. It's perfect for being in a business meeting, but that's not often!
Is there a way to patch this without root?
P.S. I'm referring to music, I haven't experienced ringer yet (I usually have my phone on vibrate.)

Ringer is just as bad, and unfortunately without root it seems that the only thing that could help would be an update from HTC, which hasn't come yet. There's another thread regarding this, with a link to voice your opinion directly to HTC.

It is the back cover. The 3VO has these tiny, tiny microscopic holes. Yes, you can see them right there next to the camera opening. Maybe break out the Dewalt drill?
Also, the back cover holds the power and volume buttons. So it is difficult to use your 3VO with the back cover off, unless you use a small flat head screwdriver to jump the actual onboard switch.
That is probably why some people think those buttons are mushy. They are part of a flexible back cover.
Also, you can test this with back cover on/off. Make sure you have your volume set because it will be difficult to change with the cover off. Sounds muffled to me with the back cover on.
The original EVO had substantial holes in the back cover over the speaker. It is noticeably louder. Especially with the custom kernels that kicked the audio up by several dBs.

I apologize. I thought you were talking about call speaker. However I just played some Deadmau5 and the speakerphone sounded adequate.
Has there been any confirmed hardware variances in shipped 3D's yet that might explain some inconsistencies?

Is their any way we can make the speaker louder without a root only app ?

I'm hardware version 0002, if that makes any difference.

I've tried AudioBoost 2 (Root needed unfortunately), Volume+ was a fail, as well as Volume Boost. Unless someone knows of another application, we're at a loss as of right now.

Weak vibration,any suggestions?

Hey guys, my phones vibrate function has slowly been getting worse and worse, I can hardly feel haptic vibrate when I hit keys on the keyboard and it sounds like absolute hell when a text vibration happens or if someone is calling me. Any suggestions? I don't want to have to unroot and bring it to Sprint just yet..

Is it every ROM? I know for a fact that on some ROMS the haptic feedback is nearly non-existent and others its fantastic.

This is good to know, I am using clean rom and am going to check with the rom handler.
I just swapped my vibration motor because it was weak. HTC shipped more than one type of motor and when I replaced the motherboard it came with the weaker type. You can tell the difference visually, the stronger motor looks like two domes (big and small) while the weaker motor has one dome and two ridges on the other side of it.
Anyways, I wanted to explain how to replace a dead/weak motor. It's really easy to do. There is no need to solder or unclip it. You can find motors by searching google. They are under $5. If u buy a motherboard it will come with one too. Use the description I gave to discern what type ur buying.
Remove your battery and sd card. Search youtube for the evo 3d teardown video. Follow the first two steps: remove the 6 screws and crack open the back wit your fingernails. Now you can see the motor.
Unplug the motor connector. Lift the motor straight up and out of it's cradle/box using ur fingernails. It's not secured in any way. It just slides out.
I think there will be a few people doing this now that we have a good ICS & sense 4 rom. The vibration on these new roms is much softer and I couldn't feel it with the weak type motor. It just made bump sound.
Damn, we should switch vibration motors. I actually prefer a softer one like how it was on the Evo 4G, but mine has insanely strong vibrations.

I agree with you on this. Mine was so strong it even felt like it rattled! found a solution though. Remove one of the scripts (soft or medium) from the attached zip file and place it in your init.d folder to decrease vibration. Stock value is 3000 but I adjusted the script to 2500 and it is close to perfect for me now.
Personally don't have a problem with that but good fix just in case

I would think that is certainly possible. Maybe increase to 3500. Try at your own risk since this is actually increasing voltage to the motor. i have no idea what the motors top voltage is rated.

Backcover sounds

Hey,
I know there is a similar thread to this but I just can't find it. Sorry guys.
Well let me tell the problem. After removing the backcover a few times I find that the backcover started to make squish sounds. Sounds come off from somewhere in middle of right side between volume and video button. It is clear that something has broken but can't figure out what. Issue seems to come from the backcover scratching the bezel. This makes me for the first time think about letting my amaze go. Tell me what you think please.
Cheers

Man this phone is awesome bit it has so many issues
1. Capacitive buttons lights leak to the screen

Don't know how valid this is because I use a tight case. But someone said to put it in a cold place, like a garage or outside or even the refrigerator. His argument was that the case would shrink and while small you could fit it back on.

If you take the back cover off and you look on the back just to the top left corner of the battery there is a small spring loaded contact. If you look at the corresponding area inside of the back cover you will see a small mark on the aluminum where it is rubbing (on the inside about half way down from the bottom of the volume rocker and the top of the camcorder button).
It seems like too much of a coincidence that there is a spring loaded bearing in the exact area causing the squeaking and that not be part of the issue.
Does anyone know if that is an electrical contact like some of the other ones on the top half of the phone?

Pretty sure they are the contacts for the phone antenna. The manual warns that the phone antenna are built into the back cover and to make sure that the cover is on tightly to receive proper phone and data signal. Might want to be careful of these with paper or command strips when making the cover fit!

The back snaps

My wife got the DNA yesterday and she is very excited about the new phone (coming from four years on the iPhone). However, the phone makes a fairly loud snapping sound if you press and then release the back cover. It does the same when you squeeze from side to side. Not too hard, it happens even with a normal amount of pressure necessarily if to pick it up. It appears the back cover may not be attached or glued property.
Do you think I should replace it?

I didn't make this mod but In my opinion I think it should be fine it doesn't increase volume of the front speaker so if it wouldn't get blown by you having normal conversations on full volume it should be fine while you listen to music
OK, just did this & THIS IS A GREAT MOD!
The volume comes out of the earpiece at a slightly lower volume than the rear speaker, so there is ZERO distortion. It's subtle, but does just enough to give everything a more "full" sound. The earpiece speaker does NOT come out at full volume like the previous post tries to scare you into thinking. It only gets a little distortion when you crank up the volume to a ridiculous volume (at which point that rear speaker is VERY loud).
This is absolutely how the phone should have come stock. I followed the video tutorial with no issues.
Just did this as well. No issues either. Awesome mod.
I agree every phone should come like this from factory
I would be careful with this. When playing music if you put your ear against the earpiece you can hear massive distortion. That speaker was not meant for those level of volumes.
With that said, wonder how hard it would be to solder the standard speaker in place of the earpiece...
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
There is no need to ever have your phone up THAT loud unless you're using it as a guitar amplifier for 50,000 people in a stadium. Regular volume levels are fine & do not distort on my S5. Perhaps your earpiece is already defective from turning it up to such high levels.
I don't know. I'm not hard of hearing & the sound is clear at moderate volumes.
I get some very slight distortion as well when the volume is maxed on my Slingbox app. Keep in mind that all sound from all apps will be coming out of the front speaker as well not only music. Therefore, its not necessarily accurate to say zero distortion.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Free mobile app
Every speaker on the planet distorts with enough volume. Also some apps just produce distortion because they're not refined. I have the Dish Anywhere Slingbox app & the volume is weird on it, too.
Sounds great.

I've done it and I like it. It's not earth shattering, but it give your speaker volume a little pop that really helps in noisy environments and can be turned down to sound real nice in quite environments. And like adam5150 says, if you don't like it, change it back. Finding new ways to help your device be the best it can be is what these forums are all about.

Pretty Quiet
I tried this on my Verizon S5, and while the sound does come out of the headset speaker, I'd estimate it to be 2 to 3 times quieter than the back speaker..... It helps a bit, but I wish there was a way to balance out the sound so they were more equal.
Nice quick and easy trick. Thanks for sharing.
Does anyone know, or maybe has tried this on 5.0? I'm thinking about upgrading and trying to weigh out the amount features I'll loose.

Here is a fix for uneven speaker volume.

Found this on reddit. Works perfectly. Both speakers even and same tone after as well... .
Alternatively, you can just use root explorer, or es file explorer to change the gain value numbers in/system/etc/mixer_paths.xml file.
After scrolling down for a bit you will see:
"speaker-gain-default"
"Left Speaker Gain value" value="20"
"Right Speaker Gain value" value="20"
Then you change the numbers to what you like (for safety don't put them above 20).
Back out save, then reboot.
Put left at 16

What if we rotate the phone the other way? Will "left" side be "right" side and makes sound even more unbalanced? Or can you confirm it is smart enough to figure out which side we are rotating to?

It works with a 180 degrees phone rotation, they sound more even, just tested. It's sad that we have to do something like this, when it should be true balanced stereo.

Wait do you mean if rotated the other was in landscape mode it works better? I am so upset I go this phone and newegg won't give ma full refund. They want 15% restocking fee, yeah let;s restock a defective phone -_-.
As you hold the phone in landscape mode with the top speaker to your left, you have to rotate it,so that the top speaker is on your right now. Apparently this makes the sound more even,at least in my case,it did. Anyway I took mine back for a refund as it also had unstable wi fi connection and it would heat up to a high level just by watching YouTube.
Seems like there are quite a few speaker issues with this phone. I myself am suffering distortion from the top speaker which I would say sounds very much like the speaker on the 5x(I had both for awhile). Ruins an otherwise great phone experience. Not sure I want to deal with Huawei repair as I've heard nothing but bad things.

The phone I was expecting the least to have, after 6 years of Android and mainly Samsung....IPhone 6s Plus .
I went for this because I wanted a break from rooting, flashing, just something simple that works straight out of the box.First days I did swipe up to unlock or pulled the notification from the top to enable the Wi-Fi.I'm pleased with the acquisition so far. After 1hr of Skype it's just warm.S6 was hot.I still have androids around me Shield Tab,Galaxy A3 as a Mp3 player.TheA3 is nice for that purpose.
I will try this fix. :good:

It's normal. Your phone is making the necessary adjustment to the orientation you gave it.
But it doesn't "fix" the problem it just makes the higher one being more low so the higher one just sound equals as the lower one... Or am I wrong?
