[Q] Enlightenment on Undervolt for WB 4.0.3 - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys
I'd like some help on installing the Undervolt for WB's 4.0.3 ROM
I'm on 4.0.3 stock kernel. All I have to do is flash the Undervolt addon and Ill be good or do I need other apps like CPU Master after flashing it?
I know theres a lot about it in the topic but its all untied and confusing
If someone could take some time to explain to me how it works I'll be really thankful.

dnt have wb rom but in general I believe ud update with the file provided n I believe u would need either set cpu or cpu master to be able to adjust the minimum value to the lowest 1 possible

I want to understand the difference between just setting the CPU speed with an app like CPU master and setting it with undervolt flashed
Could someone please explain?

i flashed the stock kernel first but there was no option to 128mhz also i believe uv works without app...you can also flash the custom kernel and choose the least frQ as i did. i also have enlightment but don't know is that from overclocking to 1113mhz or from the minimum 128mhz or from the undervolt itself??

I think overclock/underclock is different from undervolt, no?

Hi,
underclock = reduce frequency = gain life
overclock = increase frequency = loose life = gain speed
undervoltage = reduce voltage for certain frequencies = gain life
With good settings for undervoltage and underclocking you can gain a lot of extra batterie life.

Under and overclocking changes the speed at which the cpu works.
Less speed means it doesnt work as hard so saves battery.
More speed means it works harder so needs more power so reduces battery life.
At the different speeds the cpu works at it uses different voltages from the battery, less speed needs less voltage, as the speed increases it pulls more volts from the battery.
The voltages it uses are controlled by the kernel.
The undervolt module changes the default voltages each speed uses so in effect a higher cpu speed can work at a lower voltage so it improves performance at no cost to the battery life.
However, if the new voltages are too low the cpu doesnt have enough power to run so you WLOD.
The UV module (and custom kernels) have been tested on loads of devices and generally are stable, however, reading the threads suggest that some phones are still vulnerable to the occasional WLOD using these modules...
Just try and see what is stable for you...

Sir, i think you missunderstood the point of the topic.
The enlightenment which im talking about is learning the beyond the basics of undervolting you device and not a function of the addon

It seems to change from phone to phone because the chips inside are not all exactly the same.
They are tested to conform with stock speeds and voltages but can become unstable when changing these.
Some phones (Luckily mine included) can handle 128 - 1113 Mhz with ony a few (Very rare, about 2 a week) WLOD's while other people say their phones WLOD constantly with any change.
The best way is to apply the mod you want and check.
I seem to remember that the UV and the UC/OC modules are not compatble on WB's ROM, you have to choose what you want.
However, I am running freekernel 4.05 which allows me to use UV and then configure which speeds to run via SetCPU.apk.
If you install a kernel there is no need to apply the UV or OC/UC modules..
Read DooMLoRD's custom kernel thread, he has a lot of good info and useful tips on how to test which is best for your phone.

exactly, wolfbreak also mentioned in his thread about the incompatibility of overclock and undervolt with some devices.
unfortunately i'm at the short list of devices that can't handle both, for users like me he gave the option for stock kernel with optional undervolt, which i'm using now with no problems.

[Q] Over Clocking Kernels

Samsung Fascinate CDMA
Rooted MIUI 1.9.16
Did a brief search here looking to understand how to operate overclocking kernals, but find it/me relatively limited.
I have installed and ran Glitch v11 and v12, played around with HL to LL, and made adjustments to undervoltage utilizing Pimp My CPU and Voltage Control. I have also ran Tweak (though not really a kernal).
My question is this,
am I overclocking when I reduce voltage on Mhz's above 1,000?
If not, could someone point me to, or explain how to achieve overclocking on our phones, and
which kernel and governor do you prefer for overclocking?
As an ammended note, I've installed Tegrak Overclock, but am still looking for a user guide...

If you're the running the glitch kernel...use voltage control, not tegrak overclock...over clocking is when you turn the CPU speed above its normal speed..anything over 1GHz.
under volting is when you turn down the voltage frequency to achieve better battery life...
Any one clock speed may perform more or less stable with different under volting unfortunately all of our phones will vary in performance so one setting that works for one may not be the best for another so experimentation is really the best option...this applies for schedulers and governors as well.
I personally overclock as high as I can until it freezes or crashes..then I go 1 setting down...I then try undervolting different steps observing the stability of my phone...when I find what I like,I run it for a few days, then if its still nice and stable I will apply on boot.
The different leakage values are affected by the hardware quality of the chips in our phones which also vary..I start with high and see how high I can overclock..note the setting, then try medium..see how high I can overclock and so on...just as a reference..high leakage creates the most heat and is the least efficient, but works for most phones, while low leakage is the most efficient and generates the least heat and will work with not as many phones

come on man.. Clock speed (mhz) and undervolting are 2 completely different things.. Forget the voltage.. No changing the voltage is NOT overclocking.. You overclock by changing your maximum clock above 1000mhz which is stock for this phone.. Try long pressing 1200mhz and selecting set as max.. Now your overclocked to 1200mhz..

No decreasing the voltage is simply undervolting whether it's over 1000 or under. The idea behind undervolting is increasing battery life, but you can't necessarily go and set each level to the maximum undervolt (200) you half to see what works. Increasing the processor speed is overclocking, stock speed is 1000 so anything over that is over clocked. As far as how far as how far you can over clock depends mostly on 2 things, 1. the kernel your using, ( for example if it shows 1300 in the list that means thats all that specific kernel supports) 2. It varys greatly between phones. For example with glitch you can overclock to 1700 but very few phones can run that high for longer than a few minutes!

Yes.. And the fact you say your running glitch and your max oc is only 1300 my guess is you broke your kernel with tegrak overclocks module.. Delete tegrak and stop downloading overclock apps. or any other root app unless you know fully the consequences first.. If after deleting tegrak, and rebooting, if your voltage control don't show a maximum clock of 1700 mhz, then you will need to reflash your glitch kernel

When I flashed MIUI 1.9.16, I did not install any kernel; so it was kind of a half truth in that while running 1.9.9 I did have Glitch installd. Nevertheless, I still have Voltage Control installed.

There are no issues with glitch.. It is what I run.. Very smooth.. Just have to give your phone time to adjust and build cache

Landscape
Re-installed Glitch v12 ML last night and have it overclocked @ 1,200 with no under-voltage...yet. Want to see any adverse effects.
I started at 1,300 and it locked up then rebooted within 5 minutes.
A concern I have is that now my phone will not Auto Rotate to Landscape even though I have Auto-Rotate 'on' in Settings.
I've scoured Sixstrings Glitch thread to no avail. Though it's not needed anymore, I also flashed the cleaning script just to see if it would make a difference.
Is there a work around or fix for this?
Make sure you're on the latest 9/15 version of the kernel. Anything before that will kill all of your phone's sensors.

That was it. I had re-installed the older Glitch v12 that was already on my PC. Deleted them and downloaded the newer Glitch kernels to experiment with.

Yeah, locking and rebooting was while using the older version of Glitch v12. With the 9/15 dated Glitch I'm at 1300 now with the following settings:
Deadline / ondemand
200 - 1300
1300 -25
1200 -25
1000 -50
800 -50
400 -75
200 -75
1.2GHz is the best I say if you want good battery with a higher frequency. 1.4GHz is the best for anyone who uses their phone alot. Samsung did add 1.2GHz overclock in their source.

Things that make you go, Hmmm?
For some reason, every time I accessed the keyboard for Google+, it hung, then froze, and 3 of the four times rebooted. The fourth time I needed to remove the battery to reboot. So I re-flashed MIUI 1.9.16 (effectively removing Glitch) and have 0 problems.
Bummer, I like Glitch too.
I'm in the same boat, however they redone the latest glitch merge and posted it last night so I'm thinking we'll be back in good times

i'm on jt's 9/12 with miui 1.9.16 and wondering if I can / should overclock and undervolt it. I'm just trying to maximize battery life at this point.

You wouldn't want to use my voltages, I put everything way lower than anybody else does or recommends and am just lucky that it is stable for me but it causes the sleep of death for anyone else.
For comparison, just run JT's kernel for a bit and then flash glitch and try it... once you play with OC/UV and voodoo color you won't be able to go back. (you'll be able to but you'd have to be insane.)

[Q] KERNEL PANICS - what are the relations and causes? [not a simple question]

I have made a lot of searches and read a lot about battery calibration... and of course i know what the hell is kernel panic, its definition and its symptoms.
However I still have some confusions and I hope some of you may be able to solve them
Maybe some of them are noobie questions but I honestly sorry for that also this may help others who has these confusions too
My situation:
The system stats are shown in my signature.
on 5/9 I have flashed franco.Kernel v19.4 bfs and then started a lot of OC tests,
finally I was stable on stress test (SetCPU) 729mhz for 2 hours non-stop,
and also I used the phone stably for over 24 hours without reboot.
However I faced a problem which is related to Darktremor scripts.
I used 2 weeks to solve it and finally it is gone now.
I started battery calibration which is the final process before I use my phone normally in my daily lives.
But in these two days, my kernel panics after ~4 hours of usage of 729mhz max CPU frequency.
without the need of advice, surely i have downclocked to 710mhz max and its all good. but however i am super curious about why 729 becomes from stable to unstable before and after.
1) Does battery stats related to kernel panics in ANY extent? if yes, how?
Ignore all questions under 1 if the answer is No.
1.1) Does wiping battery stats before flashing a kernel helps you OC higher?
1.2) Does wiping battery stats before flashing a ROM helps you OC higher?
1.3) Does wiping battery stats (for calibration purposes) has possibilities to produce kernel panics?​
2) Why is there a sudden drop of battery level (~4-5%) after kernel panics?
3) Is there any other possible causes of kernel panics BESIDES overclocking too high?
3.1) *2sd scripts?
3.2) ext4 barrier = 0?
3.3) inputting EXT4 data writeback?
(tune2fs -o journal_data_writeback /dev/block/mmcblk0p2)​
4) Is SetCPU the problem?
Some says "dont use SetCPU when you can overclock using CM7 settings."
Is that true?​
5) BESIDES the max speed, does it also depends on Governors?
Ignore powersave governor or others which forces the clock to the minimum frequencies.
So, is there any difference between setting the same maximum speed, different governors?
(for example) Would smartass gives a panic at 729mhz but ondemand doesnt?​
6) Does the "change of frequencies" gives easier kernel panics?
Situation A: 729min, 729 max
Situation B: 480min, 729max
In situation B, the system makes the frequencies change due to load, means it may switch from 480 -> 600 -> 729 -> 710 -> 691 -> 480 etc.
so does this "change of frequencies" makes the kernel loads more and finally gets it to panic?​

1) no.
2) It happens when u remove the battery and put it back.
3) There are some strange reports of kernel panic at 600Mhz which are weird. Sometimes Roms/kernel play a part(unknown).
4) it is because you can overclock in Cm7 settings menu, so no need to install another app such as SetCpu
5) Maybe, a governor who stays more on the highest frequencies i think are easy to panic because hardware can't handle it.
6) for me, i would say situation A would be easier to kernel panic, as it is constantly on the highest frequency and stressing your cpu too much that it can't handle it.
Since you get stable at 729mhz for 2h and panicked when 4h of use, that means the cpu can't handle 729mhz for above 4h.

Conclusion : kernel panics are related to governors, at least, our new amazing profiled one - SmartassV2!!
On the thread of Franco's .35 v1 kernel, there are some users reporting the panic issues faced with ONLY SmartassV2.
And me myself, has joined the party as well
Smartass(v1) has been my best bud all the time at 729mhz or even higher for more than 6 months. And when I left it and went to choose his next generation, my phone got a generation gap with Mr.V2, lol.
On my phone: (Franco.kernel 19.4bfs and no any reflash or stuffs between testings)

very unstable panics AND random shutdowns at random times
729mhz - sometimes 2 hours, sometimes 4 hours
710mhz - yeah I justnow kernel paniced with this also, you know how long after boot? 30minutes!!!
Why 30minutes? I suspect that it.is related to franco's network speed hack. I'm on EDGE data plan and because of Franco, I can enable HSDPA with 4x more speed.
On 710mhz, my phone was stable for over 8 hours with EDGE on (I intended to save battery), but after a reboot (manual one for some other purposes) I started to use (the hacked) HSDPA. After 30 minutes, panic. I remembered when I was at 729 on smartassv2 I panicked after 3 hours and at that time I was using HSDPA too.
Smartass (v1) ---
Well now I'm on smartass v1 at 729mhz stably typing this message. Funny huh...?
Results:
Franco's network speed hack
OR
3G network/HSDPA network
OR
Even just because of specific phone hardwares
IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE ALMIGHTY SMARTASS-V2 GOVERNOR AND WOULD RESULT IN KERNEL PANICS AT THE FREQUENCIES WHERE THE PHONE CAN BE STABLE WITH OTHER COMMON GOVERNORS.
If I am wrong or you can confirm this by testing yourself, please let me know!!! thanks and hope I have provided some useful information

Dude, as i had mentioned earlier in franco's thread, that it had to do with the governors... cause i usually try and find out the cause of the issue myself before posting a bug..
SO all i tried were playing around with the performance settings... and i start off with changing the governors... the best targeted experimental ones are MINMAX (my personal fav), SMARTASS, SMOOTHASS (now removed but one AWESOME governor), and INTERACTIVE-X (rewritten by franco i guess).... About the frequencies... from what i have observed so far apart from reading stuffs is that, at 729 Mhz our optimus DOES pretty much stay stable even in the ****TIEST devices.. LOL i can say that cause we indians get the crappiest hardware of all... the point is... if you got a kernel panic at 729, it is most likely that you would get it again at 600 Mhz too cause its not overclock related..!!!
Bottom-line: Avoid SmartassV2 unless your phone is made of the finest hardware i.e. you can easily overclock it to 806 Mhz (ive seen some users using it at this frequency without any issues at all .. :O ) Use Smartass older or Minmax instead...!! And avoid overclocking above 729..!!!
P.s.: mine works fine even at 768 BTW....

SmartassV2 is kind of strange, at least in my phone. I notice my battery draining faster while I use it, and it's probably because it stays in the max frequency longer for some reason, despite screen off. I use NoFrills for my CPU setting and it has the ability to view stats, and when I'm using V2 it stays longer at the max than at the min (65 vs 35%). The opposite is true for Smartass v1, which to me makes more sense because my phone stays at standby more often than being used.
As comparison data, my phone with smartass v1 can typically be OCed up to 787 MHz. 748 MHz on v2 is stable, but I haven't extensively tested higher freqs.

Benefits of Ziggy custom kernel

Any1 can explain what are the benefits of flashing from stock kernel to Ziggy kernel? New to rooting scene, so laymen terms would be great. thx
I'm not the most knowledgeable on the subject, but I believe the main benefits would be increased speed (overclocked to 1.83 GHZ) and improved battery usage. I'm sure someone else can provide more specifics.
There are a few reason to use a custom kernel. You can overclock the CPU from 1500 MHz to around 1800 MHz with Ziggys kernel. This usually makes the phone run faster. Ziggys kernel also has some settings built in that make the processor act differently under different circumstances. This usually helps with battery life. For example, when the screen is off, it may lower the processor speed to use less battery. it really gives you the user more control over your device. The kernel is also responsible for other things that get put in such as recording your phone conversation. I am probably missing more things but these should give you some ideas. Happy flashing!
Ziggys kernel is undervolted a bit which will use less battery in general. If you get a cpu control app such as "SetCPU" or "AnTuTu CPU Master" you can use profiles to underclock your processor while your screen is off/on the phone/charging/etc. Not only will it optimize performance it can also improve battery life.

hey guys i install custom karnel on my xpera mini...now i can overclock up to 2 ghz..i just wanted to know pros and cons of overclocking..
pros- increased speed and less lagging,
cons- short battery time, increased temprature.
Is it possible to underclock it to get more battery or shelf life from the phone?
we can overclock and underclock if we install custom karnel..

Yeah. Root your phone, and install SetCpu, and you can Underclock freely and thus save lots of battery

Overclock will give you temporary boosts and lets you to showoff, and to get super high benchmark scores , but its not for regular use
Overclocking reduces battery performance and increases heating of device, which might cause your device to get unstable
and of course high temp = bad for the hardware so be careful
My SE mini works very well at 1610 Mhz.No crash,no instability but I use high frequency for max 2-3 hours or when I want to play without lagging

I only overclock my phone whenever I play games or need to switch between apps constantly. Though I always keep on 1024 as that is the default setting

Overclocking is not actually advisable because there are chances that it will affect your phone and might screw it up in the long run .
Battery drain is inevitable and you will experience it .
Phone will heat up
It may not be good for the other internal components because of the over heat-unlike computers a mobile is not actually equipped with much of cooling system.
There is a good reason why the manufacturer has set a clock speed ,otherwise isn't it better for them to just overclock a phone and sell it for a higher price ?
People who design the custom kernels are just telling the maximum possible value they could overclock to.

What are peoples thoughts on a modest overclock to bring me back up to the performance I am used to?
Say taking an ACTIVE up to 1300 or so.
With these new NON-OC kernels, are they undervolted? I have seen claims of absolutely massive battery life and I'm reasonably sure some of those were using cpu throttling and an overclock.
So confused at this point. Also heard some of the newer ACTIVE handsets cannot even be rooted.

As in most things if you not overdo it you can enjoy the benefits of better performance without risking your phone.My xperia mini is running up to 1200 (1024 stock). Also minimum speed 122 instead of 245.So better performance when you need it and lower consumption when phone is sleeping.Overall i got the same battery life, 2-3 days as with stock rom.The best thing to do is get an app that lets you make profiles.Like when screen is off min cpu 122 - max cpu 384 etc...
I don't know about these new kernels you're talking about but cpu throttling is something stock kernels do also (if by cpu throttling you mean cpu speed adjustment)

A few days ago I was tired of having my Mi3 running on stock global dev MIUI 8, it was inefficient system with really bad memory management. On my experience, the MIUI tend to run out of memory. In some case, after a few hours of usage the system cannot reclaim the occupied RAM, thus making the system lags a lot and generate excessive heat!
Yes, MIUI is a feature-rich ROM, and the Mi ecosystem is a pretty mature ecosystem. However, those all greatness needs a lot of power to run on our 3 year old device. After a few research I decided to switch to CM13 ROM.
With efficiency in mind, I do my research and tinkering with my device to get the best setup possible without losing performance. The results are AMAZING! I can use my phone for a whole day without recharge in the mid day. All of this with huge improvement on performance, Real Racing 3 highest graphic setting without any noticeable lag! CPU and battery temperature are now significantly lower (43-47C idle / light tasks, 55-57C heavy gaming). Now that I've found the best setup, I want to share it with you folks! Here we go:
Mi3W 64GB
CM13 ROM snapshot build
CM kernel (automatically flashed while flashing CM13 zip through TWRP)
Screen resolution changed to 720x1280 use this guide
Modded interactive CPU governor (see screenshot below)
Undervolt (see screenshot below, this one really helps reduce CPU working temperature)
Noop I/O scheduler
Reduce aggresiveness of LMK (see screenshot below)

It depends on the kernel used. Cm kernel that he used supports undervolt. Careful when undervolting though as too much of it can cause cpu instability and reboots.

Yes, it depends on the kernel used. Some kernel support undervolting while others don't. You need to flash kernel that support undervolt.

While testing CPU voltage value, don't tick "apply on boot" option until you find the most stable voltage without causing system reboot or crashes. Every CPU has different limit on how far you can undervolt, but you can use the values on my screenshot as guidance (Snapdragon 801 / MSM8974-AB only)

Undervolting (and clock adjustment, in general) pretty much is a case-per-case basis, so different handsets (even if it's the same type of device) may have different setup. Try lowering it first incrementally and test it, until you have it stable enough.
