We should be able to make a list of the notorious apps that we've experienced that cause battery drain. No, not some 3d launcher, not some game you play too much, but apps that when installed kill your battery without good cause..
This is an opinion thread, if you see the same app repeatedly than maybe that opinion should matter, and feel free to give your insight.. but no "you're an idiot, because blah blah"
I've used poweramp music player for nearly a year, I've emailed the dev because it will kill my battery at huge rates, but they claimed that it isn't the app. Even though there are tons of posts about the same thing(many about my phone the Samsung galaxy s).. I'm sure it does, but I love the functionality it has and can't give it up. Which is fine.
But I suddenly have battery drain really bad and tthe only change I made was switching to go launcher. Maybe it is the Widgets, but I have lost several hours a day of battery only after using it.
Either way, since I couldn't find a thread about apps people think cause needless battery drain I figured I'd post one. I bet there are a ton of apps people will hate on, but maybe qe can save someone from finding out the hard way, or maybe a developer will see their app listed and think they should work on it..
Regardless, what apps have you installed and noticed needless battery drain?

This thread is going to be full of complete nonsense.. There are badly written apps that are going to do stupid stuff, but there are also apps which have custom codecs which use more power to decode certain file formats (PowerAmp) and apps which by design are going to use power (Wifi Scanners).
The sorta new free warcraft type game, eternity warriors or something like that. Impossible to turn off

The exact kind of comment that doesn't contribute. No, it may list some apps that cause NEEDLESS battery drain. According to the dev of poweramp it doesn't process the muscle any differently, and shouldn't drain more than the stock app. There's no custom codecs to read mp3s.
I wont waste anymore time on someone who isn't contributing, only trolling.

You clearly don't get that PowerAmp doesn't use the same codecs as most media players.. It has custom ffmpeg libs. The author can say they should be similar in cpu but doesn't mean they are.
And I agree that it does use more cpu.. Mostly notice it when I listen to music while sleeping, the phone gets much warmer than if I'm using stock codecs.
And watch your use of the word troll...

+1 for the yahoo mail app.
I am using Go Launcher Ex, Launcher Pro + and ADW Launcher and cannot say that one consumes more battery than the other, it depends more on what widgets or live WP you use in the launcher, so i think we should focus on pinpointing what widgets and in what settings or conditions drain the battery, for example i found that Animated Weather was for me draining to much juice and replaced it by BeWeather, for the same reason i replaced Executive Widgets by Pure Widget.
On the other hand i removed K9 Mail and am using MailDroid, as in several occasions K9 climbed to the top of the list in battery usage, doubling even the screen usage.
At this point i never more experienced excessive battery drain, other than screen and phone cell standby (due to bad reception in my area).

Actually I might as well complain about a widget I installed, but I uninstalled it a month ago and haven't been able to figure out exactly which one it is in the market... Doh.. I installed it and it literally woke the phone and my tablet up ONCE A MINUTE to update. Deep sleep was gone, battery life about 30% lower than expected. So beware of widgets that update often

Yes you are right i am using pop.
You point is also correct, there are widgets which wont let deep sleep the phone. A method to pinpoint them is to look at the logcat and see which app is waking up the phone constantly.
tunein radio pro and sensor
I had a problem with tunein radio pro. Even after I shut it down though (App Management), under battery use, tunein radio was listed as draining battery continuously under sensor usage.
No idea if it is a sensor issue or the app issue.

Well, if you use your phone a lot, the display is the major cause of the drain, and there isn't much you can do about that short of decreasing the brightness. However if you use it more like a phone and less like a toy, then optimizing your phones standby mode can be a huge battery saver. To do this I recommend getting a JK6 based kernel like Eugene's Super IO Kernel. These kernels will only drain at around 1% per hour in standby. Second, use Superpower, Tasker, or some other similar app to automatically disable data while the display is off.
With these two things I get around 50 hours on a charge, but like I said, I don't play a lot of games or surf the web for hours

I just downloaded superpower but im not sure if its working I set data to disable but when I turn the screen on it looks like it hasnt changed

It has a bit of delay, I believe 30 seconds by default. You can change this setting if you want at the bottom of the screen state menu, but 30 seconds is a pretty good amount of time.
I am running Macnut 14 and do NONE of the above mentioned things and can get 26 hours.
Dont play game
Dont use widgets
Dont use navigation without it plugged in
Dont stream music without it plugged in
Dont use apps that pull data all the time (facebook, twitter, etc)

I'm running AXURA nothing else, and i get around 10-12 hours... max...
i only usually use my phone for; FACEBOOK *it checks every4 hours* XDA forum app, cnet news, music, and a little web.

I don't know what the deal is but this is continually happening to me and across different roms. I am using the built in "Task Manager" feature of touchwiz to monitor what processes are using my cpu. I am finding that some things are sitting there using between 15-45% cpu at all times even when in the background. For example:
Today right before my lunch I checked the task manager, I stared at it for 2 minutes to make sure there was no cpu activity, when I saw that everything looked to me normal I clocked out for my lunch and left work. By the time I was done eating (my phone had been in my pocket the entire time by the way) I checked my phone to see what time it was and noticed that I had lost about 12% battery life in 30 minutes. I immediately opened task manager and found that Browser was in the red and running at a constant 45% cpu usage. I immediately exited the browser. I find that this is happening with other apps as well.
What could be causing this? And more importantly will ICS fix it?

For example I use Dolphin Browser. The ad-dons like Google services and tab switcher kill battery like a mother and also put a ton of CPU stress on the processor.
Only thing I can say is make sure to close out all apps because apps running in a background may run rampant.
Yeah that shouldn't be happening.
I do hope a feature is implemented into android to have a 'do not run list' unless opened by user.

What I've resorted to is closing all web pages when im done and backing out of apps that I know have started to run out of control sometimes. There has to be an easier way though.
What about times like today when im researching something and have to run out for lunch and just throw my phone in my pocket with 8 browser windows open? I have to go back and find all the pages because I had to close them all out in fear that my battery would drain?
There has to be a better way. I switched to android bevaseu of the horrible memory management apple has. I would hate to leave android beacuse it couldnt control backgournd processes and let my battery be destroyed.
Memory management is good on these phones. Bad memory management causes slow downs.
What you're looking for is app management. I know some may jump on the me for saying anything about a task manager, but you might want to try one out.
Though I'd only recommend using it for the programs you're having issues with. Set it to 'only' kill the problem apps. Not any other apps or system processes.
What browser are you using? If it's happened across multiple roms, it may be an issue with that browser. Better to treat the problem (the app) than the symptom (battery getting drained)

Well see its happening with the same apps across different roms so I know its either an android problem or a touchwiz problem. Can you reccomend any apps that will auto close apps if they start using too much CPU or an app that would allow auto kill on exit? Thank you.
There's not any apps like that, at least yet. Task killers kill whether the app is using alot of cpu or not.
What apps are causing you issues? Have you compared what apps you have on your phone to entropy512's thread about known battery drainers?

My favorite with my captivate was auto task manger. When you first open it, it tries to get you to update but the update is garbage.

I have tried many options to try and anazlyze the best optimization for battery life out of my galaxy note 2 ..I noticed that when I was getting almost 2 days of battery life was when I had power saving mode enabled and I also had nova launcher installed but than I got to thinking that I wanted to give Touchwiz more of a chance because it is actually quite fluid and the animation is nice at 1x or .05x ...I was reading in threads that some users were not using power saving mode because it takes away from the beast of performance the note 2 possesses ...So my question is unlike other battery saving threads im not necessarily want pictures of your usage I want scenarios of what you ( the community of note 2 users) do to optimize and save battery life .... I will say that I am using cleanrom 3.5 I had 4.0.5 but I did not like that it took away some of the functions I liked ...So Ultimately I just want some advice on how to save battery life I have sync disabled and gps disabled but I keep google now enabled because its awesome ..I just need some advice and reccomendations please help im tired or buying apps that promise to save battery life only to find that they dont do much the most recent app I am trying and it sounds promising is DS Battery Saver and it seems promising because it actually turns off all background applications and wifi and data but wouldn't that do more harm than good to turn off background apps ,wifi and data ..

Yes I have considered but I feel that I would like to try and explore the current options available to me seeing so many positive posy by other members saying there getting lots of battery life just out of the box without upgrading the battery, the battery on this thing is huge ,3100 ma ...Are these people keeping power saving mode on to gain the extra battery difference because I do notice a huge improvment in battery life when I put it in power saving mode but im thinking the people that are getting two days of battery life out of there device do not have power saving mode enabled

I disabled haptic feedback. Keep the screen on auto.
Flashed perseus and am using a overclock/undervolt profile for stweaks from the thread that is here in general. There is a stweaks guide and stweaks profile thread if your interested.
Went through and froze or removed all startup and running services I didn't need. No sync apps that don't use push.
Anyway, that's what I did and get pretty good battery life.
Betterbatterystats isn't bloat either. It's pretty crucial if you want to troubleshoot power issues. I've used that as a reference for everything
In the end though, batteries are cheap. You can get 2 ankers and a charger for 20 on Amazon and they are great quality.

Yes I am definitely intrested in sweaks Ive never heard of it and as far as freezing apps no problem there I just am afraid that if I freeze apps like Google Maps than my Google Now will not properly work I dont snyc anything if I want to sync I do it manually but im not familiar with what you mean by push ? Also i feel to under skilled when it comes to freezing certain background apps like Google Maps I noticed alot or the bulk of my battery drain comes from Location settings I have most of my apps not location enabled but if I were to say freeze google maps wouldnt that effect how Google Now operates ?
Also do you use a certain browser that uses less battery or is that a bit overboard I use mainly stock browser but I also have google chome because its fast and simple I use stock browser when I need to watch flash content and I use chrome when I want things simplified but I find myself using google chrome less and less I heard Opera makes a very nice simple browser ..What browser do you use most often for battery life or does it not matter much ...Oh and if you could possibly send me the link to stweaks I would greatly appreciate it ...

You can get an app called juice defender. You can set it up to turn wifi/data/bluetooth/gps off when you turn the screen off. You can set schedules to sync emails and other apps every 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes.. I have the pro version so I can control my entire phone..
If location settings is draining your battery, turn GPS off.

I leave my power saving off when I use my phone. Ultimate juice defender has all of the features you need. I don't know of any videos, but I know how to set it up, just ask your questions.

Apps running in the background don't use battery unless they sync a lot. You should be able to manually set location in weather apps.. and juice defender ultimate has the ability to set night schedules, control brightness, cpu, gps, network modes, etc. I have mine set up to sync apps every 30 minutes and then keep data and wifi off. You can also set traffic limits up too, so when the screen turns off, you can have data/wifi stay enabled if you are downloading something.

If I am using the stock weather and time widget that comes on the galaxy note 2 is it a signifigant amount of battery saving if I have it set to just one location and if you dont mind me asking how do I set it up for it to be set to one lication also if I have weather showing on the lock screen with that use even more battery I mean if its running than it shouldnt effect it if I have it on lock screen and home screen...My last question is regarding location settings that seems to be my biggest battery drain. I like using google now but I noticed if I disable in location settings data and wifi I save a ton of battery life ...I was trying to figure out how to disable maybe certain apps that are tracking my location or if I should just disable wifi and data location but than google now doesnt perform properly

Some tips to help your battery maintain longer.
1) Turn off Google Now: tap google search or hold menu button>Settings(menu button)>Google Now OFF
2) Disable anything related to GPS/location access. Especially in maps, go to settings and uncheck auto check ins also clearing location history.
3) Download greenify from app store. (need root access).

Activating Now usually triggers the location reporting settings in maps/latitude. If you go back into the location settings in maps, and disable updating your location, automatic check ins, and even location history, then you can use now with very little noticeable battery impact. In fact, go into the app info for maps, and disable the notifications check box too, I've heard that helps relieve map wakelocks.

I picked this phone up for my mom, set it up and shut off all the settings I know cause wakelocks, and decided to leave it uprooted on the stock 4.1.2 Tmobile firmware because it was running quite well.
So far she's been getting well over 15 hours on battery, with a couple hours of screen on time, with a little less than 50% battery left. That's damn good battery life! But then, she doesn't clog her phone up with a bunch of useless apps that she doesn't actually use, or try to play gpu intensive games. She just calls, texts, surfs, checks Facebook and uses maps and navigation.

This up here is very important to stop gps wakelocks, if you don't disable those settings, latitude and now check your location every 15 minutes or so. I also disable any cards in now that I'm not interested in. I don't find the traffic ones that useful, for instance, and I don't care about nearby anything. I live here, I know what's nearby!
I also use the built in ability in jelly bean to disable system apps, and I get rid of anything I don't actively use. Stuff like play magazines, books, music (I'm not a fan of Googles music player), and Tmobile bloatware, especially stuff like the "my account" app that runs in the notification shade. Anything that's going to be updating on its own is going to cause wakelocks. I left Facebook on my mom's phone, but on mine I actually check Facebook and G+ using the browser, since those two apps are resource hogs.
I leave gps on, blue tooth on, 4g on, and still had great battery life, but I also tried to keep the screen brightness at the lowest it needed to be, and I don't use auto brightness.
Lastly (this has nothing to do with battery, but helps with lag) I go into developer settings and set all the animation scales from 1x to .5x. This makes the phone SEEM snappier due to the quicker animation speed, but also the phone seems to have less I/O stutter when rapidly swiping screens or doing other window animations.
Ok, actual last piece of advice; be picky with what apps you keep on your phone, don't hoard them! If you end up not using something, delete it! Don't waste space and increase memory read times by clogging your phone with useless stuff. Keep it lean.

Auto brightness was a feature on ICS. I think they've removed it on JB update.

Try lux auto brightness download it from an 3rd party appstore cos it's incompatible for our device for instructions Google it

Auto brightness is in JB, it would be weird if the L9 didn't have it. I don't have my mom's phone nearby, but go into settings, then display, and see if there's an auto brightness checkbox. I hate auto brightness, and auto rotate. It's always changing too easily, and for little reason.

I'm sure auto brightness is in JB, because I have a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7, plus it's on my coworkers stock S4. But I wasn't positive it was on the L9. I'm surprised not to see it, but I like that it's not there!

I think of it more as a mid range, if performs up to par with the S2.

It's a good phone, that's a superfluous sensor. The specs for flagship phones have exploded, which makes this a lower end phone, but that doesn't mean it doesn't perform just fine. Androids not optimized for quad core processors yet anyway.
greenify is best option to save battery juice.
Greenify is good, some apps you can get the same effect through settings, but for things like Facebook, Greenify is a good way to go.

Maybe this could work trough camera (but probably not so battery friendly). It's stupid that there is no video calling trough 3g and front camera is useless (very poor/dark picture quality) anyway. I also missing volume control for media,notification and ringtones on volume keys(it's only system volume) and original JB battery consumption info(current graf is useless). But yes,it's a OK phone.

L9 CM10.1 suffers from wlan_rx_wake kernel wakelock. The WiFi chip is somehow configured that it wakes the phone on every received broadcast packet, which is normally not necessary. Because of that on networks with a lot of broadcast traffic the phone almost never deep sleeps. Our phone is not the only one that suffers from it, there are others. I had to set WiFi to be On only when plugged in, then the battery life is better.
i am getting terrible battery life on my 5 day old Galaxy 4 for VZ. i have disabled every thing i can, i use twitter, FB, Instagram, syng google and contacts, google keep etc. i cannot get over 1.5 hours screen on time, and it drains when idle also. i get maybe 7 hours total..
i want to love and keep this but man, i am getting gnex battery life with it. i have read so many good reviews on the battery life but something is up.
any ideas??? would rooting and installing like clean rom help?

The phone probably never sleeps the way you have it set up. All that stuff syncs in the background and therefore never lets the phone sleep. Stuff you don't have to know about constantly you should either turn off sync and manually sync it or try making it sync like say every hours or 4 hours not every 15 min. Honestly there are maybe 30-50 things that can cause your battery drain from a stock device that is new. But that is where i would start.
Also, make sure your GPS is off and your not using location services from VZW but just the normal google.

great info....so what about some of the apps that people have said to install? i dont really want to root..especially since there is NO recovery...
also..i checked and i did notice it was awake allot, and GOOGLE CONTACTS took ALLOT of kernal usage..
Honestly I dont like apps used to control other apps. That means they run in thr background causing cpu cycles... hence waking the phone.
if youre not going to root, then go into the app manager and disable what you dont use and what youre able to. Not all apps are disablable. I even disable maps untill I need it
I noticed a lot of battery drain with my rooted ME7 version. Greenify helped but what really worked for me is this: Go to System Settings>More>Location Services and disable Wi-Fi & mobile network location (Google Location Services). Use VZW and Standalone GPS only. It may take your apps a tad bit longer to display your GPS position but you'll gain a lot of battery life. My GPS is always on, sync everything including 2 different Google accounts (all at the shortest interval) and have the other usual things running, ie. Facebook, Google Voice, Weather Bug, Go SMS, etc.

If you don't want to root, there's not a lot you can do as far as wakelocks. However, I would download Macrodroid and set up some profiles that turn off everything (sync, data, wifi, bluetooth) when you turn your screen off, control your syncing to once an hour or hour and a half, and turn on your data/wifi when you turn your screen back on - or rather, when you unlock it. This simple task will take you less than 20 minutes and will save you hours of battery life. Like others said, disable GPS unless you absolutely need it. Also, I would turn off a lot of the gitchy features (air gesture, air view, multi windo, smart scroll, smart stay) all that crap that is cool to use once or twice but just eats your battery like crazy.
If you choose to get Macrodroid and want help setting up the profiles, let me know. Good luck. By the way, that doubled my battery life. Once I rooted, controlled the wakelocks and bought a zerolemon 7500 battery, I can actually get over 3 days of usage with something like 9 hours of screen time.
