Touchscreen problem - HTC EVO 3D

My phone started to show erratic touchscreen behavior. A lot of times, it makes it look like something is touching it slightly above back button.
Sense zooms out when I touch the screen, email goes "back" and a lot of times, impossible to unlock it. Reflashed back to stock, same thing. Works fine for 5-10 minutes and then starts these issues again.
Any tips on what I can do?

Its a frequent problem with a lot of handsets, try a different kernel besides the stock one. I returned mine because of that, and the replacement had the same problem
Some of the cooked kernels eliminated the issue.

Wife had the same problem returned it and new phone is fine

This may sound stupid but make sure your screen is clean if it gets to funky it confuses the multi touch

Screen is clean. Made sure of it. I guess I will take it to Sprint store tomorrow and hope I won't get 1.50 hboot replacement.

Same thing here, started yesterday. No matter what ROM I put on the phone. RUU back and back to S-ON, same thing happening. That was last night, now today I am ready to take to Sprint and I can't get it mess up now! Phone was pretty much useless last night, and fine today, frustrating! As soon as it screws up I am heading back to Sprint with my S-ON self for a replacement!

This happened to me 2 days ago, I tried everything. My problem started when I dropped my phone with a tpu case. Nothing happened and I thought I was in the clear but my touchscreen stopped responding in the center of my screen. It was if the screen had a contact always being touched. I was going to put it up on xda but when i got to the sprint store they exchanged it no questions asked. For reference I downloaded touch test and multitouch test and showed them at the sprint store. The person at the repair center did say he saw about 10 EVO 3d with this problem. I thought I was going to be SOL

[Q] Touchscreen Fault

Hey guys,
I ve recently started having trouble with the Touchscreen on my Evo 3D. The phone is fully rooted and S-Off, currenlty has Leedroid ROM 3.0.
Ive noticed that sometimes it will just stop responding. I press the power button to turn the screen off and back on again, then it works fine.
Other times it will be as if the screen has already been touched in 1 place (even though i havent touched the screen). If i touch the screen it detects a second finger and tries to pinch zoom.
Recently its gotten worse and now certain parts of the screen wont work at all, but other parts work perfect. For example, i can pull the notification bar down or even use the capacitive buttons at the bottom (Home, Menu, Back & Search).
The phone has never been dropped, I have removed screen protector and case, removed apps, defaulted phone, tested different ROMs, and removed the battery for a while. Nothing has helped and im only surviving right now by using Softkeys.
Has anyone seen this, or know what it could be?
Haven't had this problem myself but something to try would be to calibrate thr screen threw the phone options snd see if that helps at all.
Locked & Loaded
""shooter on Deck""
Long time lurker, first time poster, so pardon the n00b.
I am having the same issue. I was using Revolution HD (which is a phenomenal ROM if I say so myself), and a week or two ago my phone started having that issue. I thought possibly a ROM issue, but things had been running smooth for awhile, so it seems odd that it would just start happening out of the blue.
I uninstalled apps, and wiped my phone and reinstalled the ROM, and nothing seemed to fix the issue. I finally re-locked my phone yesterday, put stock ROM back on and still had the issues. I took it in to Sprint today and they said it was because the phone had outdated software and they updated it. The only thing I saw updated was the PRL, so I'm thinking they are full of it. I should have checked for updates before bringing it in, because then they wouldn't have been able to bring that up as an issue.
They also tried to blame some apps as potentially the issue, but I'm basically at stock with minimal added apps. The apps I'm using are ones that I've used since I first had the phone. Perhaps an update of one of those apps is causing the issue.
I'm gonna run it on stock for a day or two and see if the issue is resolved by whatever update they did. I will then put HD Revolution back on and see what happens.
If you figure something out, please post again. My issues sounds exactly like yours. Doesn't sound like a ROM issue, since you and I are using different ROMs. Maybe a manufacturer defect, but I wonder if we have a common app causing the issue.
Update: Have tried the HTC Touchscreen Calibrator here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378142
No change at first. Then i re-calibrated the screen but this time touched below the designated targets (purposely putting the alignment slightly out). Now im able to pull the notification bar down! Meaning it thinks im touching part of the screen where the notification bar is when in fact im touching just below it. "Touch Test" from the Market is a great app for testing this.
Could this be a fault with certain parts of the digitizer?
I know digitizers can be found easily enough and theres videos on youtube, but has anyone actually replaced one or think it will help???
@gonzodog: How is yours looking? Do you think you can give this a try aswell?
I downloaded the calibration tool and will test over the next few hours. My screen issue doesn't seem quite as bad as yours. Turning on and off the screen usually resolves the issue ans it doesn't happen all the time.
I went back to Sprint to show the update he ran didn't work. He 'thinks' it is an HTC issue. I am am looking for a good AOSP Rom to try to see if it is a sense issue. The Sprint rep said he has the same issues on his phone.
I am new to Android (coming from webOS) so I am not used to having so many options for an OS, so I don't know which ROM I'm going to flash.
I saw another post in this forum by someone with similar sounding issues, starting to think it really may be a software issue and not a defect in the phone.
I'll let you know how it goes after the calibration.
I have this issue lately no matter what rom I run.. been running custom rom's now for Month's and this just started..can't seem to figure it out..it just gets stuck and the notification window will not pull down or it will think I want to copy and paste during a text, do goofy things while dialing etc....then I have to hit the power button to simply turn screen off and on..then all is good again...seems to be getting worse and I have used every wipe, rom etc..not sure what to do.
Someone else suggested it was a multi touch issue. Could an app cause that?
I have very few apps on my phone, since I reset to stock. Maybe I will remove the the ones I have downloaded and see what happens. I want to think the issue is caused by an app, maybe one that was recently updated.
My non stock apps are: tapatalk, barcode scanner, google authenticator, tasker, words free, godville, ringcentral, yahoo fantasy football, SwiftKey x, and Google+. Do you all use any common apps?

I'm having this issue as well. I'm loving the change in sprint policy making me go to a repair center just to get the run around. It's a bit silly that they can't hand me a new one. I'm well within my year manufacturer warranty and have insurance. I'm hoping that this issue can be tracked down. From my perspective as a former cell phone repair tech, I'm banking on defective digitizers that are wearing out or wearing in a strange manner to produce this effect. I've tried multiple roms, sense and aosp and still have the problem.
I have an unlocked evo (no carrier) full stock and it happens to me too.. Specially the "o" and "i" letters on keyboard.. It doesn't always happens but when it does is just a matter of seconds till it's ok again..

@gonzodog: I dont actually use any of the apps. Even when i flashed a stock ROM, the fault occurred.
This seems more and more likely that its parts of the digitizer at fault....
This was the reason I went back to stock s on was having loads of problems

@ronin201085 If it is the digitizer, then the question is how to get Sprint to replace it. I may try a different Sprint store today and suggest a digitizer issue. I have insurance, so my preference would be fore Sprint to repair it. I did see that replacement digitizers are available via ebay for about $20, but I'd rather not pay to fix something when I have insurance.
honestly if you are covered under insurance then have they repair it for you... its too risky to replace the digitizer yourself, especially seeing as there are no good tear down videos available that show us how to separate the touchscreen and digitizer from the main body... suffering from the same problem
I have the same problem man.. sprints customers service blows, I have taken it down there twice and they still wont do anything because I can't "duplicate" the issue. And also, for me turning the screen off and on fixes the issue.

Same problem here. Took it to my local sprint store and they replaced the screen no questions asked, although I did have to unroot it before they would touch it. The way I showed them that the defective digitizer was the culprit was downloading the app touch test from the market. That got their attention. A whole section of my screen wasn't registering input.
@3vo kid: I really don't care to replace myself, but I have taken it to Sprint twice, and both times they said it was a software issue. I was able to replicate the issue in the store, still didn't help. I am going to try a different Sprint store, and if still a problem, maybe a call to customer service.

I work for an indirect dealer fixing Sprint phones and I can guarantee you that it is the digitizer. HTC really did disappoint with these crappy digitizers. Whats more sad is that sprint does not rule this as a common problem when it truely is.
Ok for starters im in Australia and this phone was an import, so sending it back under warranty is a loooooong process, so im open to ideas.
I know digitizers are easy to get, especially on ebay, there must be people that have already replaced them. Im engineer by trade so my technical skills arent bad. Im seriously considering just trying to replace it myself.

there are deff ppl that have replaced them... but no one has posted sufficient information, pics, or videos when replacing the screen. to my understanding the digitizers are attached to the lcds with an adhesive and there are ribbon wires that get in the way of removing them. in all seriousness it might be easier to order a replacement digitizer with an lcd already attached
Ur digitizers are dirty ... put you phones in boiling water .. should fix it

Camera Not Working in ICS

I've spent 2 about weeks trying to figure out why my camera is no longer working. I tried to get s-off but with no luck so went ahead and flashed ICS while being s-on. I did run into some problems where the phone would get stuck at the htc screen but it turned out to be a bad download.
The phone runs great but for some reason the camera just doesn't want to load. When I launch the camera the phone acts as if its about to load but just freezes at a black screen. The phone is unresponsive until after a battery pull or on occasion it will restart on its own after some time. Hitting the back key and home key don't do anything but give some unresponsive haptic feedback.
The day that I noticed it wasn't working was the day my amaze overheated when using navigation while on the car charger. It's overheated before with the same setup and has always worked fine same goes for my HD2 and TP2. I've already called HTC and T-mobile to see if it's a common problem, which it isn't, so it's either a repair or refurb.
I'm a little weary thinking that it could be a hardware problem since the heat is generally around the camera lens when the phone gets hot. Especially with the risky method of achieving s-off again around the camera. I'm hoping I'm just paranoid and this turns out to be a software problem.
I would like to get some input from you guys regarding my problem. I love this phone too much to get a refurb and doubt htc can fix it if it turns out to be a software issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I actually had this problem when I first got my Amaze. It worked fine for one day, and then the next day, when I tried to open the camera app, it would give me like blank screen and freeze up (like your phone). I did a factory reset, went back to stock, etc, but nothing fixed it. Luckily, it was only my second day since I received the phone, so I called TMobile, and they replaced it with a new one using expedited shipping . I don't know what your situation is, but if you try going back to stock, and it still doesn't work, I'd trade it in for a working one.
IF you dont have a reciept, call HTC And set up a warranty exchange as camera is a hardware issue not a software issue (since uve voided your warranty on teh software by upgrading to ICS)

Yea I got a warranty replacement through t-mobile yesterday. I'm hoping I can still get my original Amaze working because there are a few minor things with the replacement that are going to bother me, not to mention getting everything back to the way i had my original phone.
Backup via recovery and restore to the new phone.

[Q] Reboots

Anybody's evo lte reboot? my does it constantly now. This is the second day I've owned it. The first day it rebooted once randomly and I discounted it as a glitch. Now I can't even use the thing, it's "almost" stuck in a reboot loop.... going to sprint tomorrow but I thought I'd ask.
Mine did so I exchanged it.

Thanks a ton. Did it today and so far this one is working great. The guy at sprint couldn't believe it for some reason, and apparently there isn't much stuff on the sprint forums about it. I told him that I found a bunch of stuff at XDA. Anyways it rebooted 4 times while I was there right in front of him. Sounds like they almost never do exchanges.. at least at this store. Anyways, thanks for the help.
That's good to hear. Mine didn't reboot in front of the tech but at least I had the crash report from when it rebooted while I was waiting.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Mine was doing that all the time.. Over the weekend I did a factory reset (Power Button / Up Vol) and then updated the PRL. That seemed to help for about a day and half. But the problem resurfaced. I had only added some of my apps back and setup my blue tooth headset. I was at first thinking it was my blue tooth caused the issue. Yesterday while I was at work it rebooted at lest 12 different times.. Even when I wasn't even touching it.
So I called support first and they opened up a case for me. I dropped by Sprint after work and they took it back and did their checking of the phone.. Here's what I found out.
1. My phone was apparently a revision behind. Can't say for sure if that is true because I didn't note down what I had before i brought it in. So I'll take their word for it. Obviously they factory reset the phone again.
2. The rep I worked with informed me that there is some glitchy apps out there. One that he mentioned that kind of stood out was Go SMS Pro.
Well to continue on here. The phone didn't reboot again after they did their thing. But today I had reloaded and then setup GO SMS Pro again and all of a sudden my reboot problem resurfaced. So I removed Go SMS Pro completely off the phone and I haven't had a reboot since. That was over 12 hours ago. I'll keep an eye on it and also notify the developer just in case. But if you like to use Go SMS like I do that might be part of your problem.
My suggestion make sure you have the latest software revision and then keep an eye on your apps and see if one of them might be causing "System Crash" on your phone.
Hope this helps!!!
I have had about 2 random reboots since May 30th.

Hardware Problem? [NEED HELP!]

I was in the bathroom yesterday and my Evo 4g LTE started buzzing a lot. I had no idea what was going on, and the phone was just flashing screens. It was going between my homescreen, and a long-press on the home button(that shows all the screens together). At this point, I figured it was a hardware problem, and I still think it is. The problem is, my phone is unlocked, and it's running CM10 on it. I have no idea what I should do. It always has it's case on(otterbox), and I also have only dropped it a few times in the last month, from only about 2 feet high max. The last time I dropped it was a few nights ago. Once again, it just randomly started doing this. I tried flashing CM10 again, and it didn't help, it still acts like i'm pressing the home button non-stop, even in TWRP. I really need ALL the help I can get. I cannot afford to get a new phone.
Did you flash the stock rom, that would probably let you know if it a custom rom causing the problem? If it still does it, you might need to take it in to get looked at.
Take the case off and see what happens.

I took off the case, did not fix it. I flashed stock rom and it did not fix it. Where do I need to go to get it looked at? Sprint i'm assuming?
Yeah, make sure it's a corporate store that does repairs, don't go to some third party store, they normally aren't any help.

Okay, sorry it took me so long to reply. The phone might go a day and do the homescreen thing, but the next day it might work. It hasn't done it since about 2 pm yesterday and now it started up again. I also noticed that when I press on the right side of the screen, it makes a clicking noise. Can I get it repaired even though it's s-off, unlocked bootloader, and has a custom rom on it?

Top of screen messing up. Anyone else?

What's up Xda? I have a question the top of my EVOLTE's screen is messing up. Just randomly right now. What I mean by messing up is that my notification bar becomes non responsive. At times it'll even slightly drop down maybe a quarter of the way down the screen without me touching it at all. Keep in mind it's just randomly right now not while I'm running certain apps or anything just random.
I am running cm10 stable and I did the pointer location grid and it showed me that no response was being read in that area.
Now keep in mind evolte is in prestine condition. No water damage or drops at all this just started out of nowhere. Anyone else having issues? If so did you do anything to solve it?
I'm gonna take it to sprint tomorrow, but gotta restore it back to factory first. I was just hoping there was another way. My sprint store reps and techs don't seem to know anything. They just give u a new one.
I also ran into this problem with my old evo 4g, but there was rain involved with that.

Why don't you flash sense rom first.
Just to see if it works, before going to sprint.

I am having the same problem!!!!! i thought it was just me, my notification bar doesnt respond, when I try to touch anything at the top, it doesnt respond, when I lock the screen, I could touch the screen and the ring will not move. I have searched the forums for a reason and havent been able to seen anyone with the same issue that resolved it..other than taking it back to the sprint store and getting another phone...I am rooted too, so I am concerned about returning the phone and having an issue, any suggestions??

Did you take it while on cm10? I wanna take mine so they can also fix my screen and battery but I'm afraid theyll say something cuz of this. Don't really wanna waste my time relocking boot loader and going to stock just so they can fix hardware.

I don't recommended taking it to the sprint store running cm10 I would flash a stock ROM first. Idk about yours, but back in the day I took my og evo tho the sprint store and they just handed it back to me because my boot animation was different.
As far as my screen issue goes I think it had something to do with an app I had. I had the GBA emulator and whenever it was running it kept the icon on the notification bar. Once I uninstalled it I haven't had the problem since. Still its only been about 19hrs, but still nothing. Hopefully it doesn't happen anymore because sprint in my area sucks.

Definitely sounds like a bad digitizer
This just started happening to me a couple of days ago! I'm running MeanROM, i have the screen randomly hitting buttons or not responding but if I turn the screen off/on it responds properly for a few minutes or so before screwing up again. I'm going to try doing a fresh install now.
Edit:
So, I did a fresh install of Stock with Goodies and installed updated Liberty kernel and haven't had any issues for the past 24 hours.
The same thing happened with my OG evo. Dealt with it for over a year until o got this phone. I hope it doesn't do the same thing.
