Amaze went swimming! - HTC Amaze 4G

Dropped in the potty, will be buying another. I have taken this one apart to look around inside. Wanted to check for memory card and any other color change water damage stickers inside--there is one. ---------I am also going to take vid of the strength of the screen. Ima try to scratch the hell out of it, and see what it takes to break/crack the screen as well , interested in seeing how durable it is. Update later -

Very interesting. Couldn't wait to see it and sorry it happened to ya.
Perhaps you can make a step-by-step vid instruction on how to disassembling and reassembling the Amaze as it will be very helpful for others in case they needed it.

agreed, teardown sticky ftw!

phone isn't ruined water does not damage the phone, only if there was chlorine in the water like a pool. Only thing that can get damaged by the water is the LED bulbs and a new LCD display will be needed at most that's worst case scenario. I fix water damaged phones all the time. Stick it in a bowl of dry rise for a few days that some times help.

@ celltimemb. I didnt know bout the LED fix. Good to know. BUT- I didnt drop it in then pull it out. A kiddie put it there and i found it there later. Put the cell on calcium chloride (Damp-rid) I use this to pull moisture out of many things. Didnt help so i figured pay the deductible and play with the remains. --Yeah i'll do a tear-down vid before the screen test. I had it apart already-I will have s/o record me this wknd.

I think you should re-enact the toilet scene too.

Dont forget the last part
"Will it blend?" video

OH SHIZNIT! Now that WOULD be HTC AmAzInG!

I would love to see how easy it is to scratch the screen with a single grain of sand.

Elaborate please ?
I was under the impression youd have to get lucky there wasnt much current going through for the water damage to be survivable. ((i.e if youre in the middle of web surfing when it takes a dip its likely a goner))

I'm curious too. Does it depend on the phone also? I have friends who dropped their *phones in and it wouldn't work anymore. Probably a Apple thing though.

I have (in the past 15 years or so) revive quite a few cell phones after water damage. What I usually do is to remove the battery immediately and start drying the device completely using air conditioner and hair dryer. Corrosion will kill the mainboard so when I have a driver handy, I open up the case and dip it in a bowl of rice, too.
I don't think we can revive batteries after fully soaked in water, though.
The worst case was when my friend went ocean swimming with his iphone in his pocket. We did everything but it didn't come back. But when he replaced his battery a few days later, the phone came back on.

Doing the screen test, any ideas on what to use and ways to scratch it? I have some ideas. I have the shatter/crack test figured out already.

other than keys n change you could try rubbing sand between the screen and a credit card.

Any updates on this? Kinda wanted to see how tough the screen is. A tear down guide would probably be useful as well.

[Q] Saving my Atrix, any way?

OK folks,
After a night of wine and tequila on a brother birthday, i got to home with my girlfriend. I get quickly to bathroom and my phone fell out of my coat directly on the toilet. When I saw, I took as fast as possible and not turned over, and dry it with a hairdryer, removed the battery and sim/sd card.
Apparently the screen still with some water on it inside. I didnt opened it because it still on warranty (1 month of use), so i'm freaking out, here in brazil I paid $800 (it costs $1200 really, but i got a promotion) and i'm out of money. So if you guys know something to do and if atrix have a protection, please help me.
PS: donation accepted
Like any other phone that gets wet...battery removal is a priority. Then put it in a ziploc bag of dry, uncooked rice for several days. Your warranty is now void since it's been wet, so dis-assembly shouldn't bother you.
you might as well take it apart to let it dry since your warranty does not cover water damage. you can always try to find some water damage stickers on ebay and replace them and try to get the warranty to cover it...
I already removed the battery, of course. I'm thinking of dis-assembly this and try to replace the water damage indicator, but there is no other sticker that motorola can know that i opened it? because opening void the warranty too.
Lesson learned. Don't put a phone in a pocket where gravity can take over and drop.
That being said, I've fixed a couple wet iPhones by putting it in dry uncooked white rice for acouple days.

Rice will usually work. HURRY
Thats not a 'lesson learned'. Every day the first thing i do when get in home is put the cell on its dock, but this time... it happens...
the cellphone is now on white rice uncooked, i'll leave it for some days and will try to call motorola to knows if they can do anything, maybe paying... i know the warranty is on the hell...
i'm just with fear about the water inside the lcd screen... i'll search around an video off dis-assembly of atrix..
My wife dropped hers in the toilet not only is it working fine but the moisture
sensor on the back under the cover is still white.
good thing our phone doesnt have void stickers so we can take it apart how many times we want without worrying, also the lcd is not glued to the digitizer and what not. so if there is water inside you can easily get it out..
kudos to moto.
I have found this: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/1
Someone know at where should i dis-assembly? i think it's very hard to assembly it again after.
Thanks to everyone that are trying to help me, i'll thank every one!
Sorry for double post, edit bnt isn't working here (Opera),
Do someone know where to find the water damage indicator to replace mine? I didn't find it on ebay (or doesnt know how to name it)...
Thanks in advance.
I would like to name this build (if you dont mind)..."Toiletblur"
If you take it apart and let it dry out it should dry out and work again. It happened to another phone I had.

Not quite so............corrosion can build up very quickly, and the only way to get rid of that is to take apart your phone, piece by piece, and very carefully clean out any corrosion deposits. There are guides for this with the iPhone, and other phones, but the Atrix is too new I believe for there to be a comprehensive guide showing what needs to be checked and cleaned. Contacts are one of the first places on which corrosion starts to appear.
Pretty sure there are no void stickers on this phone. Also there's only like 5 or 6 screws to take the whole phone apart. All of which are visible from the back. I stripped mine down as soon as I got it. I don't think there's any moisture sensors either. Maybe on the battery itself? If so just get a new battery

must have missed that one. phone comes apart real nice though. I bought mine broken. well the volume keys were messed up and the battery cover wouldn't go on right. obviously it was dropped. I took it all apart and when i reassembled it was fixed lol. one little thing around the volume keys must have been out of place. saved $200 of retail for it too
I had same experience. I did the white rice for a couple days, then switched to flower drying crystals. After a while the phone started to boot again.
To dry out the lcd, navigation is your friend. Drove for a good twenty minutes with the screen on and noticed that the streeks were disappearing. After another day, phone was like factory again.

Can you tell if phone has water damage besides battery sticker indicator?

VZW is sending me a new Thunderbolt because of a small audio issue I was having with my phone. They told me on the phone if they detect water damage on my old Thunderbolt once they get it back, then I will be charged full retail.
Obviously I do not want that to happen.....thing is, I spilled part of a beer on my phone about 3 weeks ago. Immediately after it happened I took out battery and wiped the whole phone down.
It has worked fine since then besides the very small audio issue I recently started to have but this was just barely a week ago....I would think if it was cause of the liquid damage that that would've happened earlier.....
Anyway, is there any way they can tell if it has had water damage besides the battery sticker (Because I am sending them back the bare phone, no battery, no cover, no sd, no sim--just the phone)? How are they going to check? Should I do the rice trick just to be safe?
They probably won't look farther than the sticker. If they do, they could look for corrosion or residue around the main board.
Rice won't fix that

Yes but like I said they are just getting the phone back, not the battery, cover, sim card or sd card--just the phone. So since the battery will never leave my house, is there any other way they can tell?
As far as corrosion, wouldn't I notice my phone not working properly? Cause like I said, ever since the spill it seems to be working just fine....

There is a sticker on the phone itself. It is on the back right side of the phone near the top. Kind of hard to see, but rest assure Verizon knows it's there. If you have insurance, now would be the time to use it.
Check out the attached pics of where the sticker is. Sorry it's blurry, my camera is old and crappy

Underneath the battery, correct? What should the sticker look like when its dry and what should it look like when it has had liquid damage?
If they take apart the phone (or even just remove the back housing) then it will be very easy to see liquid damage, if any exists. I just replaced the screen on a thunderbolt a couple days ago, very easy to remove the back and take a look. If you want to check yourself, just get a torx 6 screwdriver, a thin flat head or knife to remove the "void" sticker and take a look for yourself before you find yourself on the receiving end of a $600 bill. Check YouTube for a video on taking it apart, it's very easy though.
How does Verizon check though? What are they going to look for?
Corrosion, internal liquid indicators. I don't think the T'bolt has any internal stickers, but some phones do.

OK I do not see the sticker you are talking about....snapped a few pics with my work camera, what do you think:
It's on the side of the phone. You'll have to tilt the phone to see it. It's white with red spots on it. If it got wet, its completely red. That will be the first thing they look for.

Well, mine has a sticker there. Perhaps yours didn't come with one, or fell off at some point, but after looking a bit closer to your picture, I don't see one either.
Either way, specially since it was beer, they will be able to tell if anything got in there. Rice won't get beer out, it'll be sticky either way.
I personally wouldn't take the chance.

There is no sticker on the Thunderbolt, I just talked to Verizon. They go by judging the prongs that the battery hits and if they are corroded, then they charge full retail.
Mine look super gold though and appear to be okay imo......

You probably just damaged the earpiece speaker, which is pretty simple to replace and would only cost a few bucks. I can't say for sure, but I imagine the earpiece speaker is the same one that's in the EVO 4G or HD2.
The phones do have stickers, it is located right next to the two gold prongs on the upper right corner of the phone.
If your that worried about a full charge for the phone and since this issue may be related to the beer spilling on it, just use your insurance and pay the $99 deductible. Its better then getting hit with $600 charge.
Sometimes when liquids are spilled on a phone, it could take a little time for it to affect a phone.
Good luck

This technology has been in the works for a while. I remember reading about it and seeing videos of it in action a while back, like at least 5 years ago. I'm super excited to see that it's finally coming around!
It's basically a spray, or a vapor, or a liquid itself, that they spray on or dunk the electronics in. It coats literally EVERYTHING inside it. Imagine dipping your phone in thick paint and letting it dry. Same concept but this is a nano thin layer of a clear substance that repels water. Amazing stuff.
I'm definitely going to give it a shot if their site ever loads and I can find out how much it costs. Haha

I have seen some other companies doing the same thing, except with car windshields. It's like a high-tech rainex. Very cool, didnt thing it would be out for phones this soon, but that's incredible! I wonder if you will be able to remove the housing on your phone after it get's sprayed with this stuff, and it still be waterproof upon putting it back together. like nguy said earlier it has to seal off the ports, and dis-assembling it would definitely break this seal.

This does not affect the phone in any way...its nano...search nano and see how small it is, 1 nanometer = 1.0 × 10-6 millimeters, its at least 1 millionth of a millimeter or smaller... you can see on a ruller how big a millimeter is. does that answer your questions, if won't affect anything, just repel water. if it doesn't affect the conductance between the battery and the phone, it really wont' affect anything else...but call and ask them, i'm sure you'll get the same answer

I am guessing that all this does is protect the electronic components from shorting out or corroding if they are exposed to liquids. I also assume that if you submerge the phone, it will still sink and fill with water and you will still get water under the screen and have to dry it out, etc.
Finally, and I didn't read their web site, but does the process void the warranty?
I watched a couple videos on this tested on the iphone and thunderbolt and it did work. i wouldnt want to test it unless i had a backup or something. it would be safe to have just cause though

I asked about the warranty because I had not seen the video on how this is applied to the phone. I have since seen that. So, if that is how it is applied, every phone should be supported soon.
Believe me, I am the same way; How would HTC know? I guess I am just not convinced that the $60 application is worth it. With any phone, i see it as paying $60 for this application, something other than water damage occurs and I get the phone replaced. If I understand this right, now I have to get this application done again for another $60 because my replacement is a different phone.
If not already, this company should be selling their technology to the OEM. I think the Moto Droid Razr already has this or something similar.
I know many of you will disagree, but this is just plain "gimmicky". I would only consider this if I didn't pay for monthly insurance. I am 10x more likely to drop and break the phone than I am to get water damage. I think most people are.
According to their own terms of use, they only warrant/guarantee that they will apply the coating, not that it will work.
Does anyone reading here work at a cell phone store who can say what the most common reason for a replacement is? I'd be curious.

Evo went for a dip in the pool.

My daughter god bless her, was playing with my wifes phone taking pictures when as the title suggest she dropped it it in the pool.
I quickly pulled battery and let the heat of the sun dry it out, last night I finally managed to get some rice and let it sit for maybe 9 or so hours.
Powered up just now, camera works but no actual picture is taken, just a blank screen. I had to fix permissions I had a ton of fc errors.
So you think I should open it up and dry it out and maybe spray it down with compressed air?
It still has basic functions working, like phone data ect, just camera seems borked.

I probably would not use or be very cautious with the compressed air, cause it can easily rip parts off the board.
Just look if there's already a sign of corrosion and try to wipe it off.

Give it as much time as you can to dry off. Even the memory card. Might want to try to do a full reset and see if that helps.

The problem actually isn't the water usually. It the rust and corroded contacts points left as that water dries. If its been as long as you say be grateful the phone still works at all. Especially the speakers(the water usually kills them on xontact).
With as many hours as you say have passed the damage is done. You need to put it in dry rice or salt or the little sodium pellets IMMEDIATELY

I don't if the EVO 3D does but other phones have strips inside that change color once it gets wet. So they can tell if the phone has been immersed in water like dropping it in a toilet or pool.
Its usually the first thing they check for under a warranty claim. They check to see if the phone was immersed in water.
Such a thing is usually not covered under warranty.

If you pay for additional insurance you are covered after a fifty to one hundred dollar deductible. Everything is covered..theft,fire,water damage, etc..
If you are under manufacturer warranty only, then you are screwed they will always send the phone back and cite water damage. They only cover manufacturers defects.
Just popping in here, we would use denatured achohol to clean phones, it will evaporate the water from corroding the contacts.
Watch out if you have cuts on your fingers if you try it.

To add to that, a hair dryer or compressed air might actually push water deeper in or, in the hair dryer's case, melt something.

It's funny how a missing comma can confuse people . I meant that the hair dryer could melt something. The dryer or compressed air could push water deeper into the phone. I fixed my post to clarify.

I have not tried this because mercifully I have not dropped phone in the water yet. But years ago when I had instrumentation on high pressure pipelines, sometimes a seal would break and we would wind up with salt water all in the equipment. We would wash it down with distilled water, then to completely evaporate all the water, we would put it in a vacuum chamber. As the air pressure drops, the boiling point of water drops and the water literally boils away. I wonder if one of those space bags you connect to a vacuum cleaner would draw enough to make that work?
Don't know but something to file away for the next water accident.
Scar is right, we used Denatured Alcohol, every time I saw a phone come in with liquid, one of two things happened:
the customer was an ******* so i sent them on their marry little way to Asurion
OR
I took the phone apart, ignored the LDI's, gave that sucker a good alcohol bath, replaced the part malfunctioning like in your case the camera and gave it back to them.
I personally (just me) wouldn't use a blow dryer on anything like this, those parts are sensitive to heat unless you know what you're doing. I'm sure you can find a nice tech and they'll try and fix it for ya or they'll replace it unless you dont have TEP then you're screwed both ways, and for that I'm sorry
Funny I was thinking alcohol as well.
I have the phone apart now, it was super easy and the hotel im in had a nice screw driver set.
I have several sd cards and few new sims i can activate a new one when i get home.
Back in the day when I benched pc's I sprayed the motherboard and gpu with conformal spray ( we have it at work) Wondering if that would stop any corrosion from occurring.
Im not against trying for warranty but its my fault not failure so I would be upfront and see what if anything they would do. I have 3 lines and 7 year customer, maybe that will mean something.
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, very much appreciated
Sorry to be off topic but it is sorta still on topic.. ill explain...
I got a macbook pro from someone the other day. They spilled milk on it and the keyboard doesnt work. I was gonna get some denatured alcohol and clean it but ive never done it. How would this be done? Do you actually just sit the board in it for a couple hours or do you just wipe it down with something, if so, what? Im also wondering this just in case i need to do this to any other electronic, like my 3d. Thanks for any help guys.

Glass Replacement

So, I see only one other thread about this, but I dropped my phone (Clumsy me left it on a chair, it slid off, and spider webbed my phone(SUCH a short distance)) But, I've bought the replacement part myself, and I plan on doing the repair myself. Is there anything I should know before I actually do this? Has total disassemble of the phone been done before?
Not to hijack your thread, but it drives me nuts how my LGOG seems to seek out-on its own-a way to dive off my coffee table/sofa/end table...no matter how flat and non inclined I sit it two seconds later and...CRASH! floor time...luckily mine has been taking it ok. So I feel your pain, and hope you get the help you seek.

I even know your feeling -.- I've never dropped it before though, that was my first time, mostly because I treat my phones like its my second life, and because theyre expensive. This phone dropped literally a foot and webbed, I was so mad

I've seen that video, but it doesn't really show how to put the replacement back in, if you use glue, what type of glue, or how much heat is required and all that such

I replaced the digitizer on an HTC Vivid and used 3m double sided tape and doubled that up so the screen wasn't directly on top of the lcd. The video for that one recommended doing that to keep some weird effects on the screen.

Whats the youtube vid name?
Maybe try some silicone glue
Maybe try some of the silicone seal (blue silicone glue) to attach it. If nothing else you might try some electronic stores (specialty or other Cell phone repair stores) for the glue that is needed. I would opt for something that isn't so hard on stuck and maybe go for something that holds tight and seals well but doesn't make it damn near impossible.
