A Look at What HTC Will do With Sense for the ICS Update - HTC EVO 3D

We've all been wondering what will happen to Sense once we get the ICS update.
The honeycomb upgrade that the HTC Flyer got very recently gives us a clue:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2130153/htc-flyer-android-honeycomb-upgrade
Here's a video of the flyer with gingerbread:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70y78sBtDbA
In gingerbread, the whole UI is tweaked and looks only slightly different from the one on phones.
The video of the Flyer with Honeycomb update:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/2131567/htc-flyer-running-android-honeycomb-video-review
Notice how the UI is far less modified than the Sense in Gingerbread. The lockscreen is the same, but the rest of the UI nearly stock, except for the widgets, icons, and system apps.
From this I infer that once we get the ICS update, HTC Sense won't be as extensive as it is in Gingerbread, and we will actually have less of the Sense UI and more vanilla Android.

When it comes to their phones it will be sensed out..We can hope they don't mess it all up but they will..HTC isn't very established in the tablet market so they can experiment with what they think people want.Phones have been established so they will continue doing what they have always done...
This is just my opinion though..I wish they would just leave it alone and maybe add a few things

My bad, I put the wrong link, just fixed the post.

It is not like HTC is lacking in sales due to to Sense. People continue to buy their phones so why would they think people do not want it.
I am sure for non-tech people who buy an HTC phone, Sense makes things a lot easier for them and they do not even know what Sense means.
Ask an HTC phone owner who is not into modding their phone what they think of Sense. I am willing to bet they have no clue what you are even talking about.

So they straight up disabled the buttons on the tablet with the honeycomb update. Damn i hope they dont do that for our ICS update. talk about losing screen real estate by adding a row on the screen for the buttons!
so besides the sense widget clock, and the sense lockscreen, what was "Sense" on that tablet?? to me looked like straight Honeycomb for most part.

Yeah the flyers were a lil more hidden than ours r so I hope they don't do that for us.
Plus I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere Google released a notice to help manufacturers for putting ICS on devices that have buttons now.

I do hope the HTC sticks to the vanilla ICS interface for the EVO 3D, maybe adding a few widgets and all. I prefer that much more than Sense and I don't really mind them disabling the capacitive buttons.

Sense looks good on the outside, but ugly on the inside. .
Kinda like a stripper
I like the some of the things it can do vs AoSP or TW.. . But the Rosie is useless and ugly. Its a ram hog and leaves/has footprints in almost every part of the OS
I think its a bit of overkill IMO

na im a fan bud but personally they included a lot of sense features in ICS. The only thing ICS doesn't have is the Sense widgets and such really.

I don't mind sense either but they load it down with way to Much memory eating garbage. No reason for a stock Evo3D with the hardware inside to run the way it does..Load up a senseless ROM and ADW and this thing screams

It makes sense for them to do this on a tablet. Honeycomb is designed to be used from any screen orientation, whereas the buttons are only good for one. Secondly, on honeycomb the status bar is also the button bar, no screen real estate is lost by having the buttons on something that is there anyway. Leaving the capacitive buttons enabled enables false presses without much benefit.
For a phone, the primary orientation is landscape and the buttons aren't on the status bar. Thus there is no reason to even use on screen buttons on a device that has capacitive buttons already. The galaxy nexus has to have a 16:9 screen which allows the buttons to be there without cutting down real estate compared to other phones.

I could not be any more certain that the capacitive buttons will not be disabled in ICS. Also, the thing that bugs me the most about Sense besides the fact that it hogs ram and decreases the performance of the device is how deep its roots are in the OS, such as the fact that the drivers for autostereoscopy rely on the Sense framework, so AOSP roms don't have 3D and may not until 3D support becomes stock for Android, at which point the Evo 3D will probably be a legacy device or obsolete.

Woah, slow the hell down people. HTC isn't that stupid! (surprising right?). There NOT going to disable out capacitive buttons!!! ICS, unlike Honeycomb, can be used with our without capacitive buttons. They wont disable the buttons and put them onscreen if they don't have to, that's retarted.
But anyway, I like the idea of a less intrusive sense. I bet it won't happen however. They never really put much effort into sense for tablets, but on phones its their trademark. Sense widgets on a stockish system sounds really good, but w/e we'll have cm9 by them

I just hope they make it so sense widgets work in other launchers, like make them part of the system instead of the launcher. I really hate the rosie launcher, it just seems so stupid if I get a replacement launcher I can't even use the stock music widget.

The thing I disliked the most about sense is there wasn't really any customization. You HAD to have 5 screens. No more no less. And it's so baked in that if you use a different lockscreen you have to unlock and put in your password if you want to answer a call

Just check other phone's forum and you'll see how hasn't are dying to port the sense ui on their optimus 3g or their galaxy s2. It's funny but then it's sad looking at this forum and reading people hating the ui. imo I think it's fantastic. And I think other phone model owners think so too.

...what I think is sad are people who get phones with vanilla android trying to port sense, what I think is even more sad is people doing it completely different phones that have barely anything in common. read that as meaning: most **** is broken. and they are willing to put up with that, whereas I can't stand sense and that definitely played into my decision to return it.
To each his own. Something happened, slowly. The consensus used to be originally on the E4G forum that "we" liked AOSP more. Then I'd say a few months in up until a few months ago it was a pretty even split. Now it seems that the vast majority of "us" prefer sense.

grass is always greener on the other side
I like most of the Sense UI. In fact, I didn't even change the default weather widget based one. I also like the lock screen dock thing which is cool and saves me some steps.
I *think* the hate comes from two things. One, it is kind of a resource pig. Two, you are forced to use it as opposed to it being an option. Some people just doing like to have things forced on them. At least that's what my dates used to tell me !self-zing!
I must admit now that I have a device capable of running Sense properly, it is much better. With that said, it's still a bloated pig that eats up too much space and resources.

Android: It will make you a sexual tyrannosaurus, just like me.
IMHO i dont like Vanilla very much... Sure its lighter and faster, but why? Its a stripped version of android, looks very bland and boring when using core apps. Sense on the other hand gives it a much needed polish and adds tons of features and much better integration to services. Its not as fast as Vanilla but it offers so much like better integrated contacts and gallery, better copy paste, easy access settings and recent apps in the notification bar, very polished UI and core apps, in a nutshell anything the common user might need and im sure that the devs will close the speed gap when custom roms hit

The best part of android is if you have a good dev community you can have whatever you want on your phone. Hell I'd try touch wiz for awhile if someone made a good port.

I can see that point of view...and I'll admit, it has a few slick features. Mostly contact integration...that's pretty much it. Hold down 'home' in any version of Android to see the recent apps...no need to pull down.
But when I use an OS interface I use it to navigate around to applications. The applications being what I actually want to use. I don't care how sexy the operating system looks, it is a means to an end. I don't use OSX just to play with the dock, I don't use Windows XP just to **** around with Luna... hell, I didn't use DOS just to type 'dir' over and over again. I certainly never used Solaris solely to be tormented by CDE...nor OS/2 for WPS....
To each their own, of course. I'm more of a utilitarian anyway...and something that is slick looking, has superfluous features and a couple handy features that I could still live without is just fine...but when it consumes half of your goddamned ram that is double what it used to be....well...I just can't abide by that.
To me that's like getting a new car that has a fuel tank twice the size of last years model and gets less than half the miles per gallon too. wtf!?
It just offends my sensibilities. Once again, to each their own.

I am loving Sense 3.0. What I cannot believe though is even after all the version upgrades, they still have a settings button in the launcher and not something that might be useful!
What is even harder to believe is they still won't let us choose what apps we want in our launcher. You would think before they developed any other part of Sense that would be the first thing they addressed.
Maybe Steve Jobs created the launcher for HTC and that is what he wanted in it?
I love sense now. It has wonderful battery life and a pretty UI. If only I could hook the Wii remote to it. That would be hot. I don't care about speed test. It's fast enough.
I'd wish they made it possible to alphabetize shortcuts in folders. I love Sense 3.0!
As far as functionality, Vanilla takes the cake. However, Sense 3.0 isn't bad. In fact, it's quite usable.
As far as look/feel, Sense is beatiful...especially the widgets. I absolutely HATE those bland white menus though. However, AOSP ROMs are theme central (especially MIUI) and can be customized to perfection.
I prefer AOSP ROMs. Not because they contain no Sense, but because they are more customizable and take up less space.
My NS4G came with stock Android (which I prefer), but the dev support is not even a quarter of what the Evo has. That's why I bought an Evo 3D, and that's why I'm going to flash an AOSP ROM on it as soon as perm root is to be had.
So out of pure stubbornness... someone said sense takes up half your ram on your phone now are speaking of ram that your phone has avail for program usage or for storage becuase my phone seems to only be using 200 megs of ram with everything i have running on the phone and still has like 600 megs free for other stuff i never seem to run out of ram so i dont understand where your getting off saying this.... now if i am wrong please point me in the right direction to look and see sense taking up half my ram? also i used to have a HERO and let me tell you sense ran like old crusty dog dookie so it was gone as soon as i got my phone rooted... this phone i am totally happy with sense other than the fact that i cant seem to change some settings i would like to change. But thats to be expected and hopefully devs can add some new settings into this phone to make it more user freindly. but HTC you did a good job i am happy with this phone now unlock the damn thing already =)
Like they say, you never know what you had until its gon or something like dat lol
Bussin Caps n 3D
I don't terribly mind Sense, but I'm definitely jumping ship for vanilla as soon as it's an option.

Coming from a HERO stock e3D is a steller mind blowing experience I'm sure...coming from a highly tuned Evo4G it was 'okay, a little faster' at best. most of the time i didn't even notice a differene...not that there wasn't one, but it wasn't staggering enough to notice.

sense 3.0 is nice !! now that i can disable most of the bloatware its even faster
I'm enjoying sense 3.0 thus far. I only have 2 gripes. 1- I wish the notification drop down was accessible from the lock screen. I loved widget locker for this reason alone. 2- after opening the app drawer, selecting an app, then hitting home or back when done, I wish it would go back to the home screen rather than back to the app drawer.

Convenient that.
I call fake. The About screen strangely lists "Icecream Sandwich", but on every Android I've played with it would list the numerical designator (such as "2.3.4"). Things also appear more skinned than stock (I would hope Google has a bit better sense of graphic design than what I'm seeing there).

They wouldn't wipe it, they'd send out corporate security to buy the phone back and investigate the theft...
Wow. SO MUCH IMPROVEMENT. Real or not, widgets in the app drawer is nice. Also the home button feature is swagged out. I cant imagine CM8.

Sense and ICS

So after seeing some "screenshots" of what ICS will look like on the Nexus Prime, it actually looks pretty sweet if it's real. I like the coloring and looks of everything. But the way HTC goes with Sense, do you think that they will make a transition and changes the looks of things to match it, or do you think it will look as it does now seeing Sense is well, Sense. It really hasn't changed with other big updates.
Here's the link to the latest screenshots I've seen and are referring to,

I love how vanilla android looks, I also think sense is really nice too. Honeycomb is pretty sexy too. It seems like ICS is trying to bring elements of all these together. We'll see how well that works out.
I think to start out htc will prolly port thier apps (email etc) and do some light theming then later on bloat it out later on
I would really like to see a whole new Sense that is themed to go along with vanilla and honeycomb. It's time for a new change

I wanna say I remember Google saying something about with ICS they wanted to take a stronger stand on the overlays that were being put on by the manufacturers and make sure what they were doing were not hindering Android OS, or something to that extent where they wanted less of it...
but even so I still expect Sense to be there on the device running as its part of HTC by now and a reason a lot of people get their phones as opposed to the motoblur crap...

Compared to Stock ICS? No offense, but I don't think so.
I agree Sense was better than Stock Froyo or GB...
Again, I might be jumping too early... maybe I'll have a change of mind once I do some hands-on with actual Sense 4. Till then, my opinion -- Don't like it.
actually, yes compared to stock ICS as seen on the GN, i totally agree... a complete eye-sore...
but it is definitely a great looking sense UI. i mean really what did you expect from HTC who's main platform has been sense? you will never see a nexus looking UI from them. haha
Specs are the same as ours basically. Plus it has capacitive buttons which ics doesnt need. HTC is failing to me. Plus all HTC phones look the same. Where is the variety?

really dont all devices kind of look the same? i mean really. rly.
look at the sgs2, galaxy nexus, OG nexus...
look at the motorola line... atrix, photon, atrix 2...
iphone... self explanatory.
they all have the same basic design, with small cosmetic features that make them unique. in the end it's going to be a rectangle with a screen on it... not quite sure why it matters
I hope they give an option, either use sense or use stock ics launcher.
Making Sense ugly gives us something to do..
edit:
and I wish it was quad core..
It may be just me but I personally am getting kinda sick of the phones with the bumpouts on them...Id much rather them make the battery bigger and have the back of the phone completely flush...
just my 2cents on that aspect. I honestly dont care for the 4.0 launcher as it looks like they took a step back from the look of 3.5 launcher imho.

HTC is General Motors of phones. Remember when GM used the same car for each division and only distinguished them by making slight differences between say a pontiac, chevrolet, and buick.....well HTC is doing this for their entire lineup between carriers. This new Verizon phone is nothing more than a 3d with ICS, a slight cosmetic change, and without 3d capabilities..... That business decision didn't work out well for GM and it wont for HTC either.

This is not very close to really use as an analogy. The only reason why it didn't work for GM was because of the recession. They offered the same vehicle under different companies with minor changes, but the same internals. And they catered to multiple budgets.

[Q] Porting HTC Sense to Photon

So I just joined the Photon crowd coming from the EVO 4G(it finally died and a friend let me have this one, as he had switched to the iPhone) and I noticed no one has tried porting a Sense rom to this device. I'm enjoying CM7 right now but really miss the flair of Sense. I know it's purely an aesthetic thing but I've always liked it, growing very fond of it from using my old EVO over the last two years. I did some Google searching about it but couldn't really find anything to help me. I'd like to see if anyone here knows what's required to port Sense to the Photon, and if it's possible, a good base to start with. Any help or sharing of knowledge is kindly appreciated.
~Siv
most users of the photon are much more technical then the evo users when you look at percentages. majority of the development have been on unlocking the power of this phone compared to decorating it. the photon has alot of hardware packed inside and they have been working to release the goodies and push it to the max.
Sense UI... someone may pick it up, but since the photon hit the market its been all about performance. I for one am a streamline guy. on my evo, all i ever ran was cm7. if you are looking for flair right now, id suggest using a fancy launcher like 3d shells products.

You're definitely right about that. This thing is a beast. I have no qualms whatsoever about the work the devs have been pushing here. It's very impressive. I was just curious if it could be done. I'm loving the fact that CM9 is here and it runs awesome with a few hiccups here and there. Anyway, thanks for responding. I'm sure one day it'll happen.
What part of Sense do you want? There are a bunch of widgets which replicate the clock. None that replicate the flip animation just so, though. Either they won't animate or they animate poorly. Somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. But Beautiful Widgets has probably the most complete Sense clock/weather thing, although the weather won't briefly take over the whole screen when you unlock like it does in Sense 3.0.
For the lock screen you can do WidgetLocker with the Sense 3 with the ring or the old Sense with the bar that slides down.
fancy widgets is a good sense clock replacement
And Android Pro Widgets are decent replacements for the calendar, friendstream, contacts widgets (the free ones don't look great, but the paid version lets you use launcher pro themes)
