Keep Prime or wait to see what's available at CES - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi,
Now that many of you have received the Prime I was wondering, now that the excitement has worn off (or has it?) is the tablet what your thought it would be?
I own the original transformer and have my Amazon order for a 64gig tablet arriving mid January (or later) . Maybe I should cancel my order and wait to see what's announced at the Consumser Electronic Show. I've been reading about a new Lenovo tablet that should have higher resolution than the Prime and may be clocked slightly higher. I know the Lenovo tablet is speculation but it does suggest that there might be some more advanced tablets just around the corner .... and hell I've waited this long.
Thanks,
MD

keep the pre order and wait to swe what is announced at ces. the lenovo tablet will hopefully be announced and i know htc has a tablet in the works and i believe samsung might have their next galaxy tab announcement as well.

There is always something better around the corner. If you keep waiting for the next best thing you will wait forever.

Really, it's the dock that makes the Transformer (and Prime) of interest to me. Without it, I'd probably not be nearly as likely to get a tablet at all. I know there are Bluetooth keyboards available, but it's the fact that the TF/Prime+dock is an integrated unit (and can comfortably be used as such, no secure, flat surface required) gives me enough functionality that I can justify the cost for the tablet.
So, I don't really have any interest in other tablets.

Lenovo and HTC Tegra3 tablets have already been announced, dunno if they'll be cheaper or have better specs, or when they'll be released.

Until I have the dock I can't form a complete opinion, however it is easily the best tablet I have ever used in terms of performance, quality screen and features. Plus it is just as slick looking as the ipad2. I am an owner of a TF1 as well, which I still use since the dock is important to me. The dock is definitely what makes this tablet unique with the double battery life and excellent keyboard setup, so if the dock is not important surely in 2 months Lenovo or Acer will have something higher spec, but will it be updated and supported as well as Asus? I doubt that very much.

The only one I would wait for would be is the Lenova, supposeably it's coming with 2 gb of Ram, but that's the only boost over the prime, but then again you loose the cabability of having a keyboard dock that adds battery life.

They're always gonna come out with something better specs wise. But until that product is actually released youre never going to know if its really better or worth the wait...again. I say get Prime now and sell it later if you like something else. I know thats what I'll be doing.

Since the Prime won't come out untill 6th of January in Holland I will wait untill the CES. Asus has delayed the release for so long I don't mind waiting a few days to see if there are going to come much better devices for the same price..

I'm not really sure how any CES tablet would be substantially better. Especially once the TF201 gets ICS I think it'll be a winner for some time to come. I have no plans to get rid of mine.

I don't know if 2gb of ram would do any good for android devices.
from what I've read anything above 1 gb would be useless.

More RAM, higher resolution screens, AMOLED screen's perhaps..
@Above, in the future this won't be useless.

Hmm, Samsung's rumored Exynos tablet will be interesting...
2.0 ghz dual-core processor (32nm processor), stereoscopic 3D displays and resolutions of up to 2560-by-1600, and retina display... oh, and supposedly 11 in.

I'm thinking about alternatives a little differently, from a cost perspective. Funds are short.
I'm without a tablet atm; miss the Acer tablet I returned for comfortable media consumption. Backordered the TP at BB, and keyboard would come later, if ever.
If I choose to delay the tablet, I'll likely upgrade my OG Droid with Galaxy Nexus, and wait till money is available again.
Either that, or look into a refurb'd Color Nook with CM9 on it, pass it to the kid if something better comes along for me.

If you're tight on cash and want to skip the TP, you should look at a Galaxy Tab 7" GSM or WiFI only refurb or just plain used on Craigslist, they're going cheap. It's a MUCH better device than the NC (I own both) and at the current price points you can find it at, a better overall value now too.

True but it would be more future proof than the TFP when they do find away to use it.

The Lenovo tablet enters production next month. Acer was trying to make X-Mas and missed so January or February is pretty likely. HTC uses Qualcomm chips and the newer Snapdragon's won't be available until mid year so they're a long shot. The Samsung tablet's a mystery - some online rags are saying February but that seems a little ambitious.

Both the Lenovo and Acer tablets are supposed to have more RAM (2GB) and higher res displays (1900x1200) then the Prime. They're Teg3 too and clocked at 1.6GHz. I'd guess that's going to become the new high-end standard. Thin and light is expected now so I'd assume the form factors will be similar to the Prime and Toshiba Excite (the thinnest, lightest tablet). They're both supposed to launch with ICS also. When all is said and done, the Prime's biggest differentiator is going to be its keyboard dock. Just like the dual-cores, all Teg3's will perform similarly. I'd expect the Acer and Lenovo to be announced in almost production-ready form at CES on January 11th.

More DRAM is always a benefit. Per Anandtech's review one of the issues he ran into was trying to edit a document, switching between apps and sometimes the memory management closing the editor on him resulting in lost work and there's no auto save.
I figure with all the delays with TP I might as well see what's coming out for the new year. I'm liking Lenovo's better specs (1.6GHz and 2GB DRAM) and also Samsung's 2GHz Exynos (prefer faster dual-core than slower quad-core).

As it was suggested I'll hold on to my pre order from Amazon and ride it out a bit but I think I'll end up cancelling it. I do own the Transformer dock and have never really used it. Virtually brand new. In the end I feel having a keyboard defeats the purpose of have a portable device.
I do have a first gen Transformer and a Samsung 7.0 plus, so I'm more than covered. If I do change my mind I can purchase a Prime from a retail location.

I wouldn't want a Acer tablet, their stuff just isn't good quality most of the time, but perhaps they surprise us with their tablet..
Samsung however, is something I'm very interested in, they seem to have the same quality as Asus with their Tab 10.1 (and others).

Questions in regards to the Asus Transformer Prime

If you only know the answer to like just one question than just answer that one lol. Don't feel the need to answer all of my questions. Thank you for your time.
1. Is the TF Prime going to become the new flagship powerhouse Android® tablet?
*Like the Xoom once was, followed by the Sammy gTAB 10.1?*
2. Will we soon see a ICS aka Android 4.0 port any time soon?
*according to ASUS they will have an official ICS update for the TF Prime in early January of 2012, for some reason I doubt that, even though it shouldn't take them more than a month to push an update especially because they aren't like HTC or Sammy, with there extremely sophisticated Touch Wiz and Sense. That causes for application updates to the Android SDK, to be stripped and gutted in order to put there own skin on top, which takes even more time*
3. How good does the screen look with the Super IPS+, I believe that's what it is called.
*how does it compare to renowned screens on devices such as; The Samsung gTAB 7.0+ w/ its SAMOLED+, The Samsung GSII with Its SAMOLED+, The HTC Vivid I'm not sure what display it utilizes, the LG Nitro I think its called I could be wrong but its an LG phone with I believe a Super Nova something display?, and lastly my current phone the HTC Sensation 4G w/ it's qHD display.(In regards to movie quality, web browsing, pictures, Netflix & Hulu+ streaming, etc and stuff like that.)
4. Also had the tablet received root yet? And any custom roms created yet? (Rather they be in pre alpha/alpha/beta)
5. Lastly should I still get this tablet even if its not available completely till mid January ish? With CES In Vegas early January maybe something better will be announced? For mid spring?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my various questions in regards to the TF Prime. I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before dropping $650+ on this tablet.

It's the first tablet to use a quad-core chip making it the current "flaghship." Others have announced quad-core tablets with release expected Q1. Whether they will be better than the Prime is subjective and will depend on their features. Expect to find out more January 11th at CES.

Asus has been one of the best manufacturers with updates. Based on the importance of them to be first with quad-core I can't imagine them not being one of the first to introduce ICS.

The unique feature of the Prime's display is what Asus has named "super bright." It's far brighter than other displays currently available and would seem the best for daylight use. Asus doesn't make their own displays - they buy them from either Sharp, AIO, or LG the same as everyone else. Only Samsung makes their own displays. Read through people's comments and they're generally satisfied with the display although some have said the colors on the G-Tab are more vibrant and there have been some QC issues.

Personal choice. If you need a tablet now, are an Asus fan, or want the keyboard then buy it now. If you have the time there's no harm in waiting until CES which is only three weeks away to see what tablets are going to look like in 2012.
1. Is the TF Prime going to become the new flagship powerhouse Android® tablet?
it is the current flagship for what's the latest and greatest regarding android tablets as it's the first one running tegra3. it's not like the xoom or the galaxy tab I/O edition in the sense that updates don't come directly from google, rather they come from asus, but so far asus has a good track record in updating the tf101 very quickly and i personally like the small touches they add to the device. if i had to bet, they will be the first mainstream tablet with ICS running on it officially.
also, the xoom was and will always be a piece of crap device that should have never been released. the tf101 and galaxy tab series were the old flagships imo.
2. Will we soon see a ICS aka Android 4.0 port any time soon?
asus has stated end of the year or early next year, they've stated that the primes that will come out in singapore around mid jan will be sold with ICS preloaded on them, so that bodes will for us getting it in the next few weeks or so.
3. How good does the screen look with the Super IPS+, I believe that's what it is called.
the screen is great. superIPS+ is mainly for outdoor use as it bumps the brightness beyond any other tablet in the market, which makes it actually readable in sunlight, but it will murder your battery and shouldn't be on all the time.
personally, i find it to be better than any other tablet screen i've used (xoom, tf101, gtab 10.1, viewsonic gtab, ipad1, gtab 7" (1st gen)) the colors are vibrant, it has great viewing angles, and text is very clear.
4. Also had the tablet received root yet? And any custom roms created yet?
people were able to root some of the primes, but the latest OTA seems to break root if you don't have it already before, some people have said they couldn't root the gamestop tablets even before the OTA, so reports vary. i don't think we'll see any custom roms before ICS drops, with a lot of slower developement being due to less people being able to get it in their hands right now.
5. Lastly should I still get this tablet even if its not available completely till mid January ish? With CES In Vegas early January maybe something better will be announced? For mid spring?
something better will always be around the corner, but i can say with 99% certainty that anything announced at CES won't be on the market until summer (Q2/Q3) at the earliest. and personally, i don't see the point of the insane resolution panels that everyone is trying to make right now. ~720p on a 10" screen is plenty of pixel density for me.
but, if you can't get your hands on one before CES, you might as well see what they announce. personally, i'm happy i got this, and when those tablets finally hit the stores, if i like them, i'll sell this and get one of those, the kicker with the prime though, is the dock, no one else makes something like the dock that works as well as it does. so for me, i'll probably wait until asus makes a tf301 or something like that which runs win8
hope that helped
Ok this something I just noticed tonight When I was downloading pics from Goolge images. When it downloads the pictures and you open the gallery its doesnt order them in the downloaded order which is very strange because the original Gallery I have always had on my Evo never had this problem. I actually noticed this when I copied over my Downloaded pics from My Evo but I thought it was something that had to do with the fact the pictures were originally downloaded from the Evo.
But its the same when it puts the pictures downloaded from the Prime. Wanted to know if there is a way to correct this because its very annoyng. The downloaded pictures should be numbered in the order they were downloaded not randomly like its doing.
For example This my dowloaded pics from left to right beggining to end.
As you Can See the KTM Motorcycle pics were the first but for some reason it split up the first picture of the motorcycleb and put it in the front of the Gallery. The Second group of pics I downloaded was the Shelby Cobra pianted Mystic And the third group of pics were E36 BMW M3s

Here is the middle moving right
And the End
Let me Know what you guys think.

Anyone else give up on the Prime?

First off, I do not want this to be an ultra negative thread. While I have not used the Prime, I'm sure that it's overall the best Android tablet yet.
Basically, going into the holiday season, the Prime became the #1 thing on my Christmas list. I started to get super hyped for it after doing a lot of research, and that lasted a long time. But over the last 2 weeks, my interest went way down. The first big reason was obviously obtaining one in the first place. I won't focus on that, however, since we're all familiar with the issue.
The other major reason for holding off on a tablet purchase was the Prime itself. I consider the Prime to be the first true Android competitor to the iPad, and also to be the first (sorta) 2nd gen Android tab. But, for me, the definition of a new generation is having an increase in almost all specs and a consequent improvement in performance. That's where I'm hesitant. The Prime still has just 1 GB of RAM, a pretty poor GPU, the same resolution as always, and some other things that aren't any different from 1st gen Android tabs. It's more like a 1.8th generation Android tab to me. Definitely on another level than the 1st gen, but not quite fully 2nd gen to me.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Prime is awesome and extremely tempting. But my desire started to wane when I heard reports that I can be confident that by around March there should be some Android tabs with 2 GB of RAM, much higher resolution, better GPUs, and sometime during 2012 there will be A15 processors out. I know a lot of people will say that this is how mobile tech always is, that there is always something better soon, but for me I feel like it's worth the wait to reach a fully new generation. Anyone else in the same boat as me? Or are most people caving in to how tempting and awesome the Prime is lol?
I'm buying a prime, if something wayyyy better comes out that is support tempting to upgrade, then I will sell the prime on craigslist and buy the new tab.
I used my original transformer (now sold) at school a lot so the kb dock is a must have for me, and most likely other tabs won't have as great kb implementation, so im probably in a different situation as someone who just wants the tab and they may be more easily tempted to switch.
Sent from my Galaxy S2
I got my Prime and so far I love it. I don't think there will be better android tables in the near future since none have been announced. I know Samsung likes to take its sweet time to release new products, but having said that, if they come with a better tablet I will have no problem selling the Prime to get the new one. I do it all the time.
Sent from my Galaxy Note using XDA premium.
There's always something new and better coming out every 3 months if I held out I would never have a tablet!
Short answer: Not yet.
But seriously, there are several reasons I feel that the Prime is a serious contender to iPad and something that can be called 2nd generation Android Tablet.
First, granted that a bump in the amount of RAM would be great, but in reality we should look at how well optimized the system should be for a given amount of memory. Slapping memory in when it only increases costs while doing very little good to the system performance is a step back in my opinion and 1GB should be plenty for a tablet with optimized OS. I also feel that Honeycomb is to blame right now as to how it utilizes its system resources.
On the CPU front, a quad core at lower clocks, made on a mature A9 process rather than a new A15 one makes more sense to me. The 4 cores+companion core and its implications on the battery along with the long term implications on the multi threaded applications far outweigh the initial performance improvements due to the bumped up frequency on a dual core.
The higher resolution would be interesting, but the question is if we really need 2k+ resolutions on a tablet screen. Does it really make sense to stress the GPU out for such little difference in the visual output from a tablet? Granted I could think of this improvement in the third generation devices, when the GPU is actually able to handle this with 3D gaming smoothly without heating up, but I still think it is wasteful beyond a certain level of ppi. I would much rather throw all that GPU horsepower behind better 3D rendering.
I agree on the GPU front that tegra 3 is lagging, but when we look at tablets we must remember that the experience is a sum total from CPU and GPU working in tandem. It is very difficult to bump up both the CPU and GPU specs to insane levels while keeping the price point that Asus is keeping (unlike Motorola with their horribly spec'd and priced Xyboard). I had hoped though that Nvidia would finally get their GPU to Unified architecture on tablet front like their Desktop GPUs- That would have been absoultely great with the 12 GPU processing cores in the Kal-el. But it is true that GPU is lacking right now.
Ultimately though what will make or break this tablet will be ICS. Everyone is more interested with the kind of experience that one gets on a tablet, not the hardware behind it. I feel and hope that the final melding of the mobile and tablet paths of android will give us improvements on that end. I also think that the way Asus, Nvidia and Google have been working on ICS we should see some interesting improvements on Tegra 3 with ICS. For me, Prime seems to be the best choice going ahead even with the upcoming CES.

Pegatron lands orders for Lenovo quad-core tablet PC
Aaron Lee, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Monday 19 December 2011]
Pegatron Technology reportedly has landed orders from Lenovo for its quad-core LePad tablet PC, which is set to enter mass production after the Lunar New Year in January, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Specifications include the all new NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor which will be clocked at 1.6 GHz, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a high resolution display (1900x1200). It is also reported to have a full sized USB port, two cameras and a “Special Fusion Skin Body”.
In response to the report, Pegatron said it would not comment on matters concerning individual clients.
Currently, Lenovo's LePad sales are only behind those of Apple's iPad in China with the volume already reaching 160,000 units in the second quarter and a market share of 8.4%, the sources said.
Pegatron was originally the upstream partner of Germany-based Medion, but as Medion was acquired by Lenovo earlier in 2011, Pegatron was able to enter into Lenovo's supply chain and may even have chances to land notebook orders from Lenovo in the future after succeding in receiving tablet PC orders, the sources said.
In addition to Lenovo, Pegatron reportedly also has received orders from Acer and Toshiba for 2012, but the company has again declined to comment on client-related matters.
For the fourth quarter, Pegatron's quarterly profit will have a chance of reaching NT$1 billion (US$32.93 million), or an EPS of NT$0.4. Its EPS for the first three quarters of the year was negative NT$0.38.

T2's memory bandwidth and GPU was bottleneck for Honeycomb. The improvement on T3 might be just enough for 1280*800, but not good enough 1920*1200.
Anyway, that's just pure speculation. It would be interesting to see the actual products coming with T3 on 1920*1200
No, I don't have a first-generation tablet for it to be an upgrade from, and I'm interested in it first and foremost for the keyboard dock.
I admit I'd prefer to have more RAM, though 1GB is probably sufficient. But the resolution doesn't bother me much: I'd rather have the dock than a higher-resolution screen.
i'm more than happy with the prime thus far, to wait for potential new devices (none of which are around the corner) is to never buy anything because there's always rumors of devices "coming soon". being that the prime has had so many issues getting out of the gate, one could reasonably assume OEM's trying to push all these new panels (1200p, 1080p, 2000p) are going to have some major supply issues and are going to cost more than the prime does with dock.
in the gen1 round, asus was really the only oem who figured out people won't buy your tablet if you price it the same as an ipad and don't offer anything over the excellent ecosystem apple has created for their device, plus the apple logo > all in the mainstreams mind.
as for 2gb of ddr3 over 1gb of ddr2, if ICS can optimize the OS as much as google seems to be promising, then i'm just fine with 1GB.
the real kicker for the prime vs any other tablet is the dock, if it's something you want to use in that fashion, there is no other tablet out there that can compete in that area aside from the tf101.
the tegra3 soc as a whole seems to be running things just fine, until we really see some really AAA games for android, i don't see any problems with it's GPU. and by the time that happens, we'll all have moved on to (or at least i will have) gen3 tablets anyways and be running android 6.0
personally, the dock + having it now + asus' design and general build quality (this thing is THIN and solid) make me not really care about anything lenovo or samsung are going to put out in the next 4 months. (if they put out anything in that time frame at all)
but i already own a prime, so maybe i have some bias in my view
I realy want to get the prime, but i'm afraid to order and get a wifi/gps/screen leeck one. Im gonna wait abit untill the others comeout[lenovo, acer] maybe the price will drop and the units will finnaly have everything working.
If you're waiting for the price to drop. You'll be waiting a year at least.
---------- Post added at 01:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:14 PM ----------
This screw up on Asus' part is unacceptable in my opinion Johnny Shih announced this thing over two months ago at AsiaD and from that point on they should have been manufacturing these things 24/7 since then to meet the demand. But they obviously didn't because they couldn't even fulfill the initial preorders. If they can't fulfill the initial pre-orders how are they supposed to meet the ACTUAL demand of the entire market. I'm not giving up on this thing because I can't phyisically get it. I'm giving up because by the time they actually do meet demand, Tegra 4 processors will be PRIMED for release.
True for Toys Too
I guess everyone gets caught up in the specs wars but as far as the ram goes I think one gig of ram is plenty for the prime.Someone correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the the original ipad only have half a gig of ram & it runs as smooth as silk?? If the Ipad ran sluggish people would say it needed more ram.But the software is just optimized for that amount of ram & that's why people compare every tablet to the ipad. I've seen videos of ICS running on the nexus & it's very fluid.ICS is the software that's been so badly needed that's why Asus wanted the Prime to ship with it.
i was not impressed with the primes hardware, software or screen. IMO my HP Touchpad runs better, good roms and screen colors are better.
selling it. dont become negative this is just my conclusion after testing each side by side. the primes price makes it not worth it to me considering the HP Touchpad does everything I would use the prime for but better and it was $300 cheaper.

I understand feeling this way. My Prime will be delivered on Wednesday and based on the various threads I have been concerned that there could be problems. This will be my first tablet and just like buying a laptop or anything electronic if there is a problem I will simply exchange it or have it repaired. I am not going to let the concern about a problem that may not exist on my tablet to keep me from getting one. FWIW.

Can you please stop posting that the whole time in every topic? Your HP Touchpad isn't running Honeycomb, so that isn't making sense at all. Thanks.
You ask if we are still getting the Prime after hearing that it isnt perfect?
I ask back: Why did you want to get it in the first place? I guess only you can answer that and see if it justifies the cost.
For me its pretty simple. I never had a Tablet before because the iPad doesnt offer the features i'm looking for. And i have a general rule not to buy first gen stuff. For obvious reasons i think (mainly because the companies are experimenting with stuff in 1st gen).
Along came the prime, offering everything i was looking for while not being a 1st gen device. Sure there will be better tablets in the future, with different features like screen resolution, but its the 2nd gen tablet from asus. End of story Again what features are required to make it 2nd gen? Resolution? Cpu clock? Amount of Ram?
For me being light and thin is one of the most important things on a Tablet. There is no other tablet as thin and light as the Prime, while still having all the features.
My post is getting long :/ But my last point is: Dont judge the software in its current state. It was planned as a ICS tablet but HC was needed to meet the release date. I would have been surprised if it was without bugs... I even expect some problems when ICS comes out simply because its still very new. If you want a system that is fully matured you have to go with iPad. Apple has a year more of experience with tablets than Android and the software is extremly minimalistic (->fewer bugs).
I intend to keep my Prime for quite some time. And i know that one year from now it will have none of the software problems it might has now.
But it will still have that keyboard dock with USB/SDcard, good if not better battery life than now (software optimizations!), many awesome Tegra3 games, good camera, light and thin etcetcetc.
I've used the original Transformer since launch day (I was fortunate to get it when within 3 minutes of when it came available on Amazon, and so skipped these shenanigans; I had no idea how frustrating it was). My opinion is that a typical 10" tablet (and I'm including the iPad 2 here) is of marginal value TO ME (only speaking for myself here) without the kind of integrated keyboard dock that's available for the Transformer/Prime.
I say this because other than writing notes and rough drafts (I don't consider ANY tablet ready for complex document creation of any kind), I don't find a 10" tablet of much use. I'd much rather have a 7" tablet for everything else I use the tablet form factor for, such as ebook reading, RSS reading, casual browsing, and casual gaming. And if I were to get a 7" tablet, I'd see no reason to spend more than the $199 or $249 for the Kinde Fire or Nook Tablet.
That said, the keyboard dock really does change the equation for me. It gives me something I can take to all-day meetings and use for taking notes, without the slightest concern about battery life. It also lets me pop the tablet into the dock when I'm researching at night in bed and want to write something quickly--and I can do it without needing to grab a notebook tray because the dock/tablet combo generates no heat and has no vents to cover.
So for me, the Prime seems like the perfect device. Faster than my Transformer and with a brighter screen so I can read it outdoors on my back porch (very important to me since I live in SoCal and we get lots of sun), and thinner/lighter so it's more comfortable for ebook reading. It's fine for casual gaming and video, and then for all the other things I use a tablet for.
I don't care about specs like 2GB RAM vs. 1GB RAM, because I've found my Transformer to perform well enough as it is. I also don't care about higher resolution screens, because I'd much rather have the additional brightness and battery savings. And, I like the $499 price for 32GB (vs. $599 for the iPad 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 when it first came out). I don't want to spend more than that for a tablet, and I guarantee these higher-spec'd devices WILL cost more unless they have an Apple icon on them.
Finally, although we can knock ASUS for their questionable tablet product launches, we can't knock them for how they've supported the Transformer after the fact. The Transformer was always a very close second to the Xoom in getting the latest versions of Honeycomb, and ASUS was quick to fix any issues introduced by new firmware versions. They've provided a great mix of features without heavy skinning of Honeycomb. They'll also be the first, I'm sure, to release ICS, and they'll do it for both the Prime and the original Transformer.
That kind of support is worth quite a bit to me. My wife JUST got Honeycomb 3.2 on her Galaxy Tab 10.1, and I'm guessing it'll be Q2 before she sees ICS. We're pretty much guaranteed to get ICS on the Prime in January. Does anyone really see Lenovo or anyone else providing that level of support? I don't...

I guess everyone gets caught up in the specs wars but as far as the ram goes I think one gig of ram is plenty for the prime.Someone correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the the original load only have half a gig of ram & it runs as smooth as silk??

My concern about RAM comes from my SGS, which has 512MB. That's enough for any particular task, but I find that it's poor at multitasking, especially where the browser is concerned. The RAM isn't sufficient for browser + much anything else, so starting the browser kicks other applications out of memory, and leaving it means returning to the browser requires reloading any open pages.
I do think that 1GB will probably be enough though. How much RAM does the Prime have free for applications?

selling it. dont become negative this is just my conclusion after testing each side by side. the primes price makes it not worth it to me considering the HP Touchpad does everything I would use the prime for but better and it was $300 cheaper.

If you supposedly sold your prime (that as far as I am concerned you may or may not have ever owned) then why are you still trolling these threads. Go back to the TP threads. For the record I'm no Asus fanboy; I'm just tired of reading your trollish posts...Load CM7 on this supposed Prime that you have sold or are selling and then do the comparison of your discontinued tab vs the Prime.

Asus Prime Killer?

Looks like I might not purchase the Prime after all. I was waiting on it but reading all of these nightmares makes me want to wait and see what this bad ass toy has to offer at CES next week.

Looks cool, but without the dock I'm personally not interested.

For me it is the dock that makes Transformer Prime really worth it. I don't understand anyone who buys Prime without the dock, since it is not better than other high-end tablets in the market and has quality issues that the other high-end tablets do not have. I would buy something like Prime without the dock only if it was actually much better than the competition (higher clocked dual-core processor (quad-core is only really useful for games), 2GB of RAM, working GPS with better WiFi). Right now the Prime's non-existent GPS and weak WiFi alone are reasons enough to consider Galaxy Tab or iPad instead of Prime, especially since the only means of internet connection on Prime is through WiFi as opposed to 3G on its competitors.
So yeah, the only reason Asus has me as a customer is because they give me something others do not. Asus UK seems to understand this rather well too, since they are only offering the device with the dock. It's as if they know it would not sell well otherwise.
are either of the two games shown in the teaser even on android?
also: enjoy waiting until at LEAST march, but probably june for anything that is announced at CES to be available to purchase.
How is a device that we don't know what it looks like, what feature set it has, how many cores it's get, what the additional peripherals are, supposed to be an TP killer?
For goodness sake, the article doesn't even know whether it's going to be on android.
Sorry, you got some wrong sources, this is not about a tablet at all, this ad is for the Razer Switchblade, which is a kind of gaming netbook - you could also deduce this from the link at the end of the video - PCgamingisnotdead . com
It has nothing to do with Android, tablets and the Transformer Prime
It's one quite expensive gaming netbook for 2800$
More info about the device, which is definitely not a Prime killer - search for Razer Blade or Razer Switchblade (I was going to link it, but I'm a new member and apparently I cant )
If it's from Razer, you can bet it's overpriced. Just look at the Blade.
Razer usually makes crap so you can expect some really big stupid bugs in it like most of their stuff. Maybe like a handsfree GPS deathgrip, oh wait!
I'm hoping CES has something about the Google Tablet... I am hoping for something to be announced before the return window for the Prime closes because while I could live without GPS, I can't live without bluetooth which I essentially don't have in my Prime right now.
I bought their Mamba mouse, a decision I regret daily. Runs out of battery in 1 day, takes about 3 hours to get any computer to recognize it in wireless mode. And I paid way too much for it. I am sure the tablet will be a pain in the ass somehow too.
I don't like Razer either, their products usually have a very strange nerdy look, I mean look at their laptops:

That sir, is pure bull****.
It is a great tablet with high end specs. Its even cheaper then the Galaxy Tab 10.1
Galaxy Tab 10.1N 32GB: €535
Asus Transformer Prime 32GB + dock (worth about €150): €599 - €150 = €449
Not to note the better things the Prime has to offer vs. the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (and others) (fast RAM, Tegra 3, awesome display, keyboard).
Also, Asus is very fast with updates (are you aware that Samsung did release Android 3.2 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a week ago or so? Asus did that a couple of months back.).
It is just the best tablet today, with or without dock.
That tab OP linked to SUX . lol
it didn't list anything prime can't already do. those games are nothing as prime can handle the same thing since Tegra3. developers been said it'll be easy to port PC games and such to Prime/tegra3 without any loss in quality. they said for the first time they can developement in parallel since no dumbing down has to be done.
Prime would eat that Razr tab alive

Maybe for you. For me it is not the best tablet, I'll be buying it just because it has a dock.
In RAM and processing power it is weaker than iPad 2. It can defeat iPad in some tests, but loses out on others. Everybody says that ICS will change things, but we just do not know if it does. Not yet.
Not having GPS is a drawback in comparison to iPad 2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Not having 3G is a drawback. Having weak WiFi is a major drawback since it does not have 3G.
If you only use it to play games and watch videos then I agree, it is the best tablet out there. But as a mobile internet device it just does not compete with iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab.

Yeah sure, 1 GB & Quad core 1,3GHz (5 cores) (Prime) vs 512MB & Dual core 1GHz (2 cores) (iPad 2). You know the WiFi iPad 2 doesn't have a GPS either huh? Only 3G versions have a GPS.
WiFi is in line with the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 btw.
Check your facts mate.

The dock is great, but it really sounds like you are not terribly satisfied with the prime. Why don't you get an iPad 2 or Galaxy with a Bluetooth keyboard, and a case which allows them to be a single unit?
... and you do realize that the wi-fi only iPad 2 does not have GPS?

What's a prime killer? GPS
Like others have said, its not just the tablet itself but the tablet/dock combination that makes Transformer unique and more desirable than other tablets. If Samsung or other manufacturers offer the same then we might have some competition but as it stands right now, TP is in a league of its own and that is why despite its shortcoming has a great demand for.

Prime has far more processing power than ipad2 as far as CPU goes. now if you meant how ipad2 gpu a lil more Power then OK. BUT even that claim has been debunked by developers n reviewers. they said yeah the ipad2 gpu may score better in synthetic benchmark tests BUT real world results will have Tegra3 providing a better looking version of anything ipad2 would have. so your claims there are false also. if you felt so disappointed by Prime, f#&! the dock. go get u ipad2 with their crappy wireless keyboard and only 512mb of ram. with a piss poor front and rear cam. come on now..lol. the prime ain't selling out like crazy for nothing. Prime is here to stay and will continue to hold Crown of Best and Most powerful Android tablet ever created. plus will hold this title for several months as nothing is expected to release anytime soon.
The hype isnr about ipad2 or galxyvtab. the hype is about the Prime. Get used to it. The Prime is the best deal out there for what it offers. plus look at the updated Anadtech article addressing the GPS issue. He said the GPS issue isn't important enough to change his view on his reccomendation of tablet. they still hold it as the best ever and best deal for what it offers.

that's what I'm thinking. instead of griping about it, just get something else. one of those outdated tabs he mentioned. because constantly downing the tablet then saying you still going to get one is a living contridiction. if I was so unsatisfied I wouldn't get one. regardless of keyboard dock. doesn't make sense.

The prime + dock is an amazing combination but I completely agree that the tablet on it's own gives nothing that's that special. the galaxy has CM9 now, which everyone who has used it says makes it fly, so I'm sure you won't notice such a huge difference between them, not to mention the difference in speed you are likely to see vs a prime with bad wifi. there are primes with good wifi but many people are having to fight through exchanges to get them. and comparing any android tablet on specs to the iPad is ridiculous since they have different OSs, and so use their specs differently.
I am still waiting for my prime purely because of the dock, and a hope that mine will have no wifi/bluetooth issues.

Razer likes to over-reach at the conceptual stage. Last year they had everybody in ooohs and aaahs at their switchblade concept.
It started as this...
and finally ended as this...
Which was initially supposed to hit the markets pre-christmas at a whopping $2800. Still not out, however, due to hardware delays (specifically the SSD).
I'm not bashing the end result - it's still an incredible looking machine. But it's easy to recognize the gap between their concept piece and end-result. I wouldn't bank your desire for a tablet purchase in the near-future on them. Switchblade went from concept at CES '11 to deviated end-result that still isn't out by the following CES '12.
They are ambitious, and make some nifty peripherals (although not without their share of negative feedback). Largely, they are good at marketing, possibly a little too good at it as the end-results tend to fall a little shy of their blog-hyped press-releases and snazzy concept photography.
Now CES is mere days away, and i might be caught eating my words by mid-July when they magically drop a shiny new tablet on the market . All I'm suggesting is don't take Razer marketing as gospel - it's very much crafted to generate hype - sometimes more than is warranted when the end-result shows up.

Nothing special.. lets keep that remark until the real tegra 3 games start sprouting up?
Gal tab will excrete blocks of hardened clay when the T3's gloves come off.

Possible Prime alternatives..

http://www.slashgear.com/acer-iconia-tab-a510-tipped-to-hit-europe-in-march-14213354/
Interesting if this story holds true... MWC should be interesting with all the tablet announcements.
Iconia Tab a510 for roughly the same price as Prime...
HTC Quattro/Vertigo/whatever it is called now.... rumored to be released in March
& iPad 2S or iPad 3 from Apple...
All due for March... or at least based on speculation/rumor/media report..
As far as the unreleased competition goes, I still think the Prime (when non-defunct) is rather superior to all of the hopeful alternatives. Even if they don't turn out to be, there is no excitement.
In my mind the prime will be superior because of the dock. Until someone creates another tablet that can out perform the TFP and has the same or better dock, the TFP will be better.

I agree. That Acer, although has tegra3, is lower spec in other aspects like cam, etc... The only other tablet that's gonna make some noise or have hype around it ipad2s or ipad3. For some reason I have a feeling new Ipad going to keep same chipset as in ipad2 but have higher Res. Display and maybe 1Gb of Ram. Apple good for only upgrading chipset every other release. All other tablets won't really have no hype around them like the Prime did. Other than new Ipad of course.
Might as well wait though. Tegra4 will be out after summertime or fall. Specs on Tegra4/Wayne chipset is beast.

It's an alternative to those who do not want to deal with Prime's current issue (not that it's guaranteed that those upcoming tablets won't have any issue either)... Also, with the Iconia Tab.. excluding the "dock" feature & and Camera... everything else seems to be on par with Prime or better (higher display, slot for SIM card.. and etc).
Just a choice, or possible choice to those who are looking elsewhere...
Also, where are you getting this info on Tegra 4/Wayne being released after summer or fall? Based on few of my reading (such as Anandtech).. that 28nm quad-core from Nvidia seems destined for late this yr (at the earliest) or early next yr...
Based on Nvidia's history with Tegra 3 (which was due last summer/fall).. I'm going to guess that it won't be ready til next year...

Yeah its like Q3/4 at the earliest for tegra4. With tegra3 being out before 2012 , there's a good chance we could see tegra4 device announce in fall and maybe a Christmas time release. I read some article talking about Nvidia getting things ready with it or ready to ramp up production of it. Ill try to find article n link it or post it.
Nothing wrong with alternatives. I'd go with Acer tegra3 over Lenovo one. Lenovo tablets never have any developer support and they are super slow in releasing firmware updates to latest releases. At least with Acer, they have support n have been recently releasing updates more often. I think their new A200 has ICS rolling out for it now. To the same version we have, 4.03. I thought that article you linked said new Acer has 1280x720 display. Primes is 1280x800. So they basically the same.
Did you hear about the latest news of how U.S. approved the acquisition of Motorola by Google? One more step and its a done deal. By this happening, Google will finally be in the hardware manufacturing sector now. Who knows what ingenious tablet they might concoct then. A Nexus tablet created and manufactured by Google themselves, since they will own Motorola, is seeming more n more like reality.

That article doesn't mention anything about resolution.. but from earlier reports & at CES.. it had 1920x1200. It does have 10.1 in display like Prime though.
Google's acquisition of Motorola doesn't interest me much. Not only is Google new & inexperienced in hardware division but you'll see some serious displeasure from other OEM (such as Samsung) if they were to "favor" Motorola... & create Google phone/tablets.
Granted I have my doubts on Win 8 (even as win dev.), if Google were to favor Motorola over other OEM, that'll certainly fuel & help OEMs switch their focus to Win 8 (heck, majority of them are paying MS already anyways for all the android devices they sell... they might as well just make the full switch & support Win 8 over Android instead).

We don't know anything about Apple's next tablet. Everything up to this point has been RUMORS and speculation. The only "concrete" rumor that I have seem so far is the leaked picture of iOS being ready for quad-core. Btw, A6 is quad-core that is on 28nm (Tegra 3 is 40nm). Although, according to this link: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/08...e+(MacRumors+iPhone+Blog:+iOS+News+and+Rumors)
it could be dual-core as well. Either way, everything about Apple's next-gen products are nothing but rumors until their press event.
We'll find more about Apple's next-gen tablet in March.
I refuse to buy any Android phone other than a Nexus. I had the Nexus One, Nexus S, and imported the Galaxy Nexus. My experience with the Prime has reaffirmed my decision to go Nexus only. My plan is to stick it out with the Prime for a while until Google hopefully decides to release a Nexus tablet. If that doesn't happen, I'll have a lot of thinking to do re: my next tablet. These companies just can't be trusted - they just seem to churn out as many Android devices as they can and don't care about the quality of their products. At least Google stands behind the Nexus devices.
wow, if you thought asus was bad at making hardware, wait until you get a load of acer. out of the frying pan and into the fire...

At least Google stands behind the Nexus devices.

Must you play the fanboi at every turn? It quickly becomes tiresome.
Five percent (5%) is the industry standard failure rate for consumer electronics. Failure rate, conservatively estimated, is closer to 30%.
No device is perfect, however some are "good enough". And others, as we have seen, are not. Now let it drop lest the constant bickering derail this thread as it has so many others.

The few issues on the Galaxy Nexus (actually, I can only think of one that affected users overseas due to certain cell phone frequencies), were quickly and effectively addressed with an update. That's more than can be said for the numerous Prime problems.
hmm, two things.
1. the galaxy nexus is a samsung device, not a google device. samsung designed the hardware, samsung manufactures it. google collaborated with them on the requirements and design trade-offs and then prioritized gnexus hardware for the first round of ICS support. it is unsurprising that the overall quality and occurrence of issues on the gnexus is on par with samsung's other phones, which is to say, very low. but the special thing about nexus devices is not the hardware, it's the software, with google pushing out updates directly.
2. if you are looking for a tf201+dock alternative then i would keep an eye on the upcoming Lenovo IdeaPad S2. it will be released in Q2/Q3, probably around the same time as asus' TF700T. lenovo has a MUCH better track record of manufacturing quality than either asus or acer and hopefully this will continue with the S2. as far as features go, the S2 is essentially a tf201+dock clone with some minor variation in specs. perhaps the biggest concern is that lenovo looks to be modifying their version of android much more than asus has, and this is rarely a good thing. one of the many tech blog articles about the S2 is here:

I don't think the nexus has any better support. The difference is they are so open that the developer community can fix the software side of things which seems to be the biggest issue with Android for the most part. I am with you and only buy Nexus phones. I would buy a nexus tablet if it was available but hope that with an unlocked bootloader the Prime can be a close second eventually.
Even though we haven't heard a lot about it, the HTC Vertex (formerly Quattro) may be the next quad-core released. March-ish is the rumor. HTC's holding a press conference on the 27th at MWC to announced a bunch of devices. I had a Jetstream for a while and it was incredibly well built. Sense and all of its widgets were pretty cool in tablet form too.

HTC to focus on quad-core tablet PCs and smartphones in 2012
Daniel Shen, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Monday 21 November 2011]
HTC will focus on the production of quad-core tablet PCs and smartphones in the first half of 2012 competing with comparable devices to be released by rivals including Asustek Computer, Acer, Samsung Electronics and Lenovo, according to industry sources.
Competition for the quad-core chip segment among Qualcomm, Nvidia and Texas Instruments is heating up competition in the quad-core device sector, the sources noted.
While Asustek will spearhead the production of quad-core tablet PCs in December 2011, HTC will be a strong contender in the segment by releasing its first quad-core tablet, the HTC Quattro, in March 2012 at the earliest, the sources revealed.
The 10.1-inch Quattro will be powered a Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU and supports HTC Scribe, Beats audio, 3.5G/Wi-Fi, and HTC and Dropbox cloud services, according to smartphone blog pocketnow.com.
The pocketnow.com website also noted that the initial Nvidia quad-core lineups will also include the HTC Edge smartphone. The Edge will be also powered by an Nvidia 1.5GHz Tegra 3 CPU and come with a 4.7-inch display, 8-megapixel camera and 32GB memory, and supports HTC Sense 4.0 interface, HTC Watch, HTC Listen, HTC Read and HTC Play, stated a post on the pocketnow.com website.
HTC is also developing another quad-core smartphone, the HTC Zeta, which will be powered by a Qualcomm 2.5GHz CPU and equipped with a 4.5-inch display, 8-megapixel camera as well as Beats, HTC Sense 4.0 and complete cloud content, according to technology site engadget.

Samsung does the actual manufacturing, but the phone is designed with input from Google. There's an official video from Google on Youtube that talks about this process.
More importantly -- and you touched on this issue -- the software and updates are done by Google, and they seem to do this very competently, unlike Asus (see their .13 update that screwed up a bunch of Primes, mine included).

That article doesn't mention anything about resolution.. but from earlier reports & at CES.. it had 1920x1200. It does have 10.1 in display like Prime though.

Technically the A5xx series has 1280x800 and the A7xx has 1920x1200. I was at CES and played with the A510 and it was a very nice and smooth device. Not as sleek looking as the Prime but it has a plastic back so it has a high chance of having better wifi, gps. Possibly not have any wifi+BT issue either (my acer a100 doesnt seem to have it). Also has micro usb/charger port in 1. So no need for proprietary Asus usb cable. I'm not sure what to call the charging connector though cause it looks like a micro usb but has a slight tab on the center. It's not MHL for sure. I forgot though if it had a full USB on the side. Need to check the rest of my pictures on my phone.
So for anyone not really into using a kb dock then this is a very competitive device against the Prime. As far as rear camera goes I'm not sure everyone uses it or at least I don't care for it as I have my phone camera thats easier to hold for taking pictures. So having one in the 1st place is just a plus. Posted some pics here.

Help deciding between prime or infinity

Hey all, I am looking to get a tablet and have two options for the same price. I can get the prime with keyboard dock and other accessories or an infinity. From what I've read so far they are very similar except for the screen. I'm leaning towards the prime since it has the accessories.
I'm def going to root it asap, so I wanted to get some opinions. Do any of you have the keyboard?? Is it worth it vs the infinity??
Thanks!

Keyboard is worth it as an option - we sometimes use it sometimes do not.
I have TF201 - very happy (sans GPS).
Wookie 1.4 ROM fixs all performance issues with PRIME (I have not yet installed it myself as the most recent ASUS ROM was also very very stable and fast).
What about these wifi issues I keep seeing. Some people make it sound like you can't even get a signal while others say it's fine. I don't plan on being outside of my house with the tablet so should i be concerned??
My dad bought a TF700 yesterday. I was setting it up and noted that the wifi was showing stronger signal than my 201. However, since the very latest update a few days ago I have noted significant improvement in my wifi on the 201. I ran speedtest.net and pulled the same numbers as my laptop.
The TF700 sitting next to the 201 looked IDENTICAL screen-wise wich I didn't expect considering the higher display specs of the 700. However, the 700's camera image on-screen was seriously yellow in comparison to my 201. Doing some research i found that a yellow screen on the 700 has been reported by many sources including reviews. When we transferred the picture to a PC and it didnt look as bad.
Office depot has the TF700 for $449. They have the 201 DOCK for $99 (in store only). I plugged my 201 dock in to the 700 and it worked perfectly so I suggested to my dad he get that one rather than the 700 dock and save the $50. There are many reports on here that the 201 dock is identical internally to the 700's dock including part numbers etc...
My dad was given a coupon for 20% off accessories when he bought the tablet so the dock will be $80 when he uses it.
All in all I would probably buy the 700 for the higher specs. Performance wise I did not find the 700 a stellar or really noteable improvement. The places I noticed things were more in the software side with extra options in certain places on the 700.
Thanks for that write up. I appreciate it. I spoke to the person that I'm buying it from and he said that wifi has always been strong for him. I did see that there was a new update. I'm not going to be streaming movies etc. mainly just surfing the web and downloading apps. I won't use the camera feature at all so that's not a big factor.
The screen was the big factor for me. I'm coming from an iPad 2 and both the prime and infinity have better screens so I think it's going to be an upgrade for me either way. I've read that many apps aren't optimized for the infinity's screen so not sure if that matters.
I'm kinda leaning towards the prime with the keyboard right now. I'm going to buy it through ebay so if the wifi totally sucks I can file a claim and return it.
I have to be honest though, neither looks as good as the newest displays on iPad. When not side by side you probably wouldnt realize but the clarity and sharpness of the iPad stands out.
having said that I stream netflix on my 201 regularly with no problems.
I agree thatte iPad 3 and 4 are sick and not comparable to the Prime. But since I'm coming from an iPad2 it'll be a slight improvement. Plus I thought that was a great screen anyways.
Good to hear the you can stream netflix over wifi without issues. That's the only thing concerning me at this time.
The prime is basically discontinued which means support and development for it will falter much sooner than the tf700. The screen if you compare text is infinitely better too and the WiFi suckz

I agree 100% with this post... I have a Prime since day one FINALLY there are some solid JB roms available, running energy with mine. As for the discontinued statement it is already happening to the docks. I tried purchasing off amazon the new 500/700 dock and they cancelled my order saying they had no clue when it would be available again. So I had to order the last one from Newegg and they discontinued it after my order.
So basically go with the Infinity or pick up the Nexus 10 if you dont mind having no memory upgrades.
I currently have both. JB Stock vs stock Prime is better. 700 is very laggy and frame rate suck. Nenamark2 is below 39 fps while the Prime gets about 57fps. Even if you enable Force GPU and Disable Hardware Overlay it doesnt make much difference. I had to down grade the 700 to ICS which makes it smoother (nenamark2 score of 41) but what I noticed with ICS is during download of games or app data the 700 becomes unusable just like how Prime was on ICS. JB on Prime took care of this.
Also you will find a lot of games not compatible specifically Gameloft and EA games. You will need to side load most of them but you will need to have a source like a backup from another device. If you dont really play gameloft or EA games then it doesnt matter. Glu games are all available in the market.
The only slight advantage of the 700 is the screen. Its better in particular with text. Micro sd card no longer sticks out if you even use one. From the forums the tf700 needs to be unlocked and loaded with Cleanrom and clemsey kernel to make it on par with the Prime but if score means anything, Nenamark2 on clemsey kernel is 41fps on JB. As far as wifi both seems to be on par. But Prime lacks gps if thats important to you.
EDIT: I just tested wifi again and 700 is slightly better actually by 5-8dbm. Unless you're quite far from your router then that might not matter much. Also noticed the Prime tends to jump around more.

I have a TF201 (since Dec 27th of last year). It is a low SN unit and I've never had any WiFi problems (only the GPS but that's a non-issue for me). It has worked great since new and has only gotten better with each update.
I have a friend that bought TF700's (based on what they saw with my Prime). When we are visiting we usually play the same games etc. sitting next to each other. He always comments that he thinks my Prime out performs his Infinity. There are some apps that work on my Prime and sort of works on his Infinity like multi-live wallpaper. I can assign different pictures to each of my screens without any problems but on his Infinity it doesn't work for some reason. We are both running JB. When we run Beach Buggy Blitz side by side his gets jittery when there is a lot of stuff going on but mine is smooth as silk. Not sure if this is the resolution optimization thing mentioned above.
I say go with the Prime if it's the same price as the Infinity especially if it come with the dock/accessories and the Infinity is just the tablet.
Both of them sucks, buy winn8 tab.

It's Win8, and why are you bothering to troll this forum? You provide no value.
You are nobody to criticize. I just answered OPs question. Problems?
There are probably Win8 forums out there. Did the OP ask about Win8? NOPE. Since he didn't your crappy answer is not needed.

If you're such a fan of Windows 8 join an appropriate forum where positive comments would be welcome. So far, all your posts to this forum have been negative and counterproductive.

Mine is not total crap. It's been great since I've had it. Just because you may have had a bad expericance with Asus doesn't mean they are all crap. You add ZERO to this discussion and in no way are you helping the OP.

That’s cool. I'm waiting for my warranty to run out at the end of the month then it's root and unlock for me. I'm kind of scared to do it because mine has worked so well from day one though. I should be getting the dock for Christmas and I can't wait to play with that. The DEV community is great and that is why I like the Android platform so much because of cases like yours.
