battery won't charge past 96% - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I am at my wits end with this stupid phone, If its not one problem its another. I was convinced this phone would have amazing battery life once seeing my cousins AT&T version, I bought the UK T-mobile version and its been plagued with faults. The main fault it has developed now is that it won't charge past 96%, I have configured the battery and installed the 1% battery fix and nothing is happening also my battery has been draining quicker than usual. Sometimes I get 13hrs sometimes I get 7hrs!? Could someone give me some advise? I was thinking of ringing my insurance company for a replacement (as it is with my bank and usually they just replace the phone)

You should probably research a little bit more on the forums as there is a million answers about battery life issues.

Yes it does. Charge with the phone turned off and it will get to 100%.

I'm sorry, are you sitting in front of my phone? I have followed this correctly on another atrix and it has worked for them, I don't know why its not working on mine I have followed it through properly.

How long have you had the phone?
One thing we all have to consider is that since the dev community has had to provide "fixes" for the Battery Reading on the Atrix it might be safe to say that at some point the measurement might become too accurate. What I mean by this is, I've had my phone for almost a year now and I'm pretty convinced that the reason my battery won't charge past 97% is because of the natural degradation of the lithium battery. It is a fact that lithium batteries can lose up to 10% of its charge capacity after a year. So I've accepted the fact that my battery just might be losing capacity and the battery mods I have applied to my phone are just that much more accurate.
This reminds me of the recently released Galaxy Nexus and people complaining about the signal and Verizon responded with that the "reading" was too accurate and that they'll release a patch that will basically "lie" to the end user about the strength of their connection.

I have had the phone for about 3 months now. This is why I am saying its weird. The fact that it dies so quickly is another thing I got about 7 hours of moderate use with about 1hr 45 display time with 10 mins of music and about 10 texts and a few phone calls(about 3 short 5 min ones)l

All of you are talking percent. What is the power level of the battery at max charge? Battery showing charging to 100%, or any other percent, and having full charge are not the same thing.

Could be a faulty battery. If you've only had it 3 months I would try to get the battery replaced if it has drain issues.

You make a good point, I use Battery Monitor Widget Pro and keep an eye on usage time rather than battery level.

The battery never reaches 100 on the phone it will sit there at 96% and even the battery calibration app says the battery isnt at 4200mv (which apparently it should be) its at 4190. I never charge mid way I always let the phone get to about 15% then chuck it on charge.

Well I use the internal android one but I want to know whats draining it because today nothing was running, i had everything shut down and frozen that wasn't necessary.

You might need to use a 3rd party app to find the "rogue" app/process. Other than BMW, I also use System Panel to monitor it if I notice my usage time is depleting, it works well. You have to have monitoring activated and it's only available on the paid version, but you can use the free version to manually watch your apps/processes.

Ok so I recalibrated the battery and got rid of the 96% freeze but now the drain is quicker than ever :S

have you tried wiping battery stats as well? Also, when you recalibrate, do you go through a couple "full" charge cycles? As in, do you allow the phone to fully discharge and then completely charge it plus at least an extra hour? I know that lithium batteries do not have the "memory effect" but I think it has more to do with software rather than the battery itself.

yeah i do wipe battery stats but the mAh is not going to 4200 its stuck at 4186 nd wont go past 98%

Something else you could try that I've read around here.
1. Charge the battery for like 4 hours until it won't charge anymore.
2. Unplug the phone from the charger, turn it off, and then pull the battery out
3. Plug the phone back into the charger (Do not put the battery back in yet)
4. Wait for the phone to show an image of a battery with a question mark in it.
5. Put the battery back in.
6. Wait for it to recognize the battery, it will probably give a very low percentage like 5% or 10%.
7. Do not turn it on yet, let it charge for another hour or so.
8. Once you return, it will still probably show a low battery reading, ignore that and boot into recovery while it's still plugged in by long-pressing the power button and when you see the green led notification light press and hold volume down
9. Wipe battery stats and then reboot.
10. Wait for it to boot and then unplug it from the charger and check the battery reading.
I really don't understand what this does but I've read it has fixed the issue for some people.

question about reconditioning battery

yesterday after flashing nero 5 i wanted to recondition, so while sleeping at night i charged my phone to 100, and now during the day time im trying to waste the battery, but during that i got caught up on adb and connected my charger, and left it there, now its back at 83% battery, does this mess up the reconditioning process? or do i have charge back to 100, then do it all over?

what you should do is drain it all the way untill you cant turn it on anymore and leave it chargin all night turned off, and when you wake up turn it on and let it charge untill its full again, then boot into recovery and wipe batt statt , and you should be good to go mine last about 20 hours after i did that

I did just about the same with mine, minus the chargin all night turned off, and I am getting about 20-24 hours with mine, which is more than I need as I plug it in every night

me to im near a power source or computer all the time so
What you should do is keep letting it drain until 1% or so. I don't think you need to let it die completely. Charge to 100%. Boot into recovery and clear battery stats with the charger still plugged in. This is the important part. Then drain the battery and charge to full. Then you should be good to go.

The general consensus is that when you condition you should charge the phone while it's off. I don't know enough about battery chemistry to tell you why. Just do it to be safe
Battery "recondition", actually does not "recondition" the battery, it is a trick just to get more accuarte readings (that's the only reason you reset STATS)
The battery may not charge up to 100% and will never do, just following this procedure. It will just say it is @ 100% when you actually are @ 85 or 87, that's why the sudden "jump" you see.
Best way to try to get better readings is charging the battery till it says 100%, unplug it and plug it again a couple of times until it fully charges and follow the same procedure.
Once yo did this a few times, turn off phone, reboot in CWM (with the phone never unpluged) and clear battery stats. turn off phone and unplug,,,,
You will got at least more accurate readings

Android Police did a piece on plugging and unplugging your phone to get up to 100% (it's called bump charging, see below). They recommended that you NOT do it because it doesn't get you much additional juice and you wear your battery out faster. Normally I just charge my battery up to 100% (no drain), wipe the battery stats, unplug and go until it dies. I use it while it's plugged in and still get a full day easily out of my phone.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. You can not condition a Lithium-Ion battery. All you are doing is wearing it out prematurely by deep cycling. Every time you do this you destroy your over all battery life a little.
I have posted about this here in several thread, and I am getting a little tired of having to tell people NOT to do this because they don't search for themselves. Do a search on the forums for deep cycle li-ion and see for yourself.

Im asking because As i have posted on another threat I am a complete freak about my battery life.
Basically yes, I have 3 batteries to go around all day, although I us the car charger, if for any reason one day I take the train to the city, I will eat up 2 and a half batteries in a day.......
I had 3 batterys for my hd2 I need to get 2 new batteries for my vibrant. I guess im just tripping because I tried and over clock kernal and it seems like its dying faster while the screen is off

Yea, just chill. It is all in your head. From ROM to ROM, usage pattern to usage pattern, and app version to app version - there are just too many variables to worry about. Just use your phone, charge it when it needs it, and relax.
Your phone's battery is going to get less life as it ages. There is nothing you can do about that. Also, it will likely only get 2-3 years before it needs replacement. If it gets less than 2 years it is because you have been "conditioning" it. which ages it prematurely and also causes how long it lasts between charges to shorten as well.
Li-ion does not have a memory, so conditioning is an inherently false concept. Recalibrating the devices ability to read the battery is a different story, but it should only be done if it really needs it (like it thinks it is at 1% when it is at 20%), and it should never be done more frequently than a minimum of 30 charge cycles or if you charge it once a day when you go to bed no more than once a month. Less frequent is better.
So sorry, you need to find something else to obsess about. Might I suggest getting Team Whiskey to make BlackFroyo the default theme, use the 5 bar signal meter, the larger numbers on the battery, and the hacked camera the used the power button to take pictures. That would save all of us some time.

Nice link - try reading the stuff by the engineers that work with batteries for a living now instead. You do know eHow is just a site where any idiot that thinks they know something can post, right? Are you going to reference wikipedia next?
BTW when you recalibrated your battery and got 6 more hours, did you do anything else that might have explained it? You know like flash a new effing ROM? That might possible change a few things to do with your power usage.

it was a joke
and no, i flashed Nero 4.1, and then used it for a week thinking the phone would adjust to the battery and new rom, it didn't.
then i thought i'd just take a chance and recondition my battery, it was my first time, and it worked out great.
and trust me i'm a heavy user.
roughly 300-400 texts per day.
20-40 phone calls
music about 5 hours per day
and i play soem games, but thats understandable because playing dungeon defenders uses like 30% battery per hour bcz of the high graphics and such.
a bunch of app downloading.

[Guide][Bump-Charge] A Way To Sip More Power

I thought I would bring some info I highly pushed with the Thunderbolt and Evo 4G that applies here. IF YOU HAVE THE EXTENDED BATTERY, YOU WILL WANT TO DO THIS SO YOUR PHONE UTILIZES THE ENTIRE EXTENDED BATTERY. The phone comes with a smaller battery, so it's batterystats.bin file is set to see that battery. It may not charge your extended battery all the way as it will think it is done charging much sooner than it is. Not that you won't get longer battery life without doing this, but you can always get MOAR!
**Disclaimer**I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone, zombie apocalypse, or the fact your phone called your girl/guy at the wrong time**As always your mileage will vary, some phones work better than others**
This is a form of bump charging your phones. I used it today, and noticed beyond better battery life immediately. So let us get down to business.
[Step 1] You will need to plug the phone into your charger, and charge the phone until the Notification light turns green.
[Step 2] Unplug the charger, wait for the green light to go out, plug the charger back in and wait for the light to turn green again. Upon doing so, turn the phone off. You will need to have fast boot OFF.
[Step 3] Once the phone is off, wait for the light to turn green, and unplug your charger, wait for the green light to go out, and plug back in. Repeat this step for a total of 10 unplug, plug back ins. Don't panick if sometimes it takes much longer than other times to turn green. You are charging the battery past the "capacity" that batterystats.bin says the battery has, which we will come back to in a min. Power on your phone. If you do not, or cannot temp root skip step 4
[Step 4] If you are able to temp root, then you can make your battery even better. Using a root explorer, go to data/system/ and delete the file batterystats.bin and reboot your phone. DO NOT use any battery calibration apps from the market, and down the road when we get S-OFF Clockwork Mod to wipe the battery stats. There is a known issue with CWM where it doesn't work, and I have tested a few calibration apps that say they delete batterystats.bin, but the file is always there, with the same data in it after using the app. Only way I have seen that works is manually deleting it.
[Step 5] The Hardest part of all. Use your phone, do not plug the phone in once, until it hits the 15% mark and asks you to. Once you do plug it into charge, let it charge all the way back up. You are building the batterystats.bin file so it understands how much charge your battery can actually hold. FUTURE REFERENCE: you will need to do this everytime you factory reset the phone, everytime you flash a new rom, etc. I know we cannot do all this currently, but this guide will still provide usefulness down the road when we get S-OFF as you will want to calibrate the battery the same way.
****If there is anything you noticed i put in wrong, or questions let me know***HTC has supported this method, minus deleting batterystats on many of their phones, and yet again seems to work on the rezound as well.****
Or you could just download the free battery monitor widget by 3c and you will notice your green light turn on at "100%" but keep an eye on the mA being pushed into the phone. When the mA goes from a positive (green number) to a negative (red number) that's when you should unplug. You will notice that your rezound "thinks" its 100% about 10-25 min before it really is... Much easier than feeling tweeked out, plugging and unplugging multiple times. Just another option. Good post though for sure. As most would NOT benefit from the full extended potential the battery has to offer.

when the mA goes red though, is based off the batterstats.bin file. I was not even talking about when to unplug the phone. I am talking about allowing the android OS to see how battery it actually has to use. so you are talking about something different than I am.
**edit** wanted to add. Your phone hitting 100% may in all reality only be hitting say 95% for example, but your phone thinks it is 100% hence why you can turn your phone off when at 100% and it continues to charge.

haha read it now. Was unaware that the rezound knew to keep charging. The Tbolt never did(atleast in the beginning as i stopped using it for awhile), and the Evo 4G never did either. I never thought to check this as HTC themselves never made mention of it charging past "100%" on its own.

Stupid phones! Just give us a bad ass device that's unlocked, so we can do what we want already! The majority of people with these devices have no clue of their potential anyway. I work for vzw Btw and just deleted all my pics of the Samsung "Fixthis" over rated and cheap feeling like all other Sammy's IMO. I'm keeping my rezound no matter what. Even though Chingy hooked my Tbolt up with mad unreleased ish. I just switch my sim back n forth as needed

I did the battery stats fix with my Inc a long time ago. When I popped on the Rezound extended battery I plugged in the charger and it took 4 hours to charge vs about 1 for the original. Now at the end of a full day I have about 70% left, so I'm pretty sure the Rezound is much better about figuring out battery stats then older HTC's. IMHO. I'd love to see some data to back me up though.

So, step 2 turn the phone off at the end. after step 3. u say to reboot?? so if the phone is already off.. u mean to turn it on. then turn it off? kinda doesnt make any sense. Unless by reboot, you mean to just simply turn the phone on. in which, u should probably word it "Power Up" not reboot.

Lithium batteries are charged by monitoring voltage first. The phone can monitor the mAh going in and out, but it really has no bearing on the charging. It does allow the phone to monitor the health of the battery by watching for capacity changes as it ages.
Bump charging gives a slight overcharge, this is why the battery lasts a little longer. Charging with the phone off is best for calibrating the battery stats and for battery life because the phone can actually fully charge the battery. It is not possible to fully charge the battery when the phone is powered on as the battery is in use.
Here is a link to a post I made about lithium type batteries and how they charge and the reasons for calibration. It should clear up some things about the batteries.

I'll be honest I haven't looked at exactly how much of a change it results on the Rezound, but on the Evo 4G for example, we got more than a "few" extra mAh. I am glad to see someone agree with me, to an extent. I will say the way I listed it is the way provided by HTC back when the Evo came out. What you said to do, we tried with the Evo 4G and it didn't work quite as well. Maybe that is why you say only a few mAh.
The one thing I have missed from my Evo 4G days are the trickle charge kernels. I know everyone thought they were bad, but no one ever had real proof of them damaging a phone, hell I used trickle charging kernels only for well over a month everyday and never had any issues. I would love to see those come to the Rezound.
I did every trick in the book to increase battery life in my Droid Charge (bump charge, deleting batterstats.bin etc etc etc) .
I stream audio all day at work from either iheart radio or sirius online & that absolutely KILLS battery life. My Charge would kill a 3500 extended battery before the end of a long work day.
Now, I am getting awesome battery life from the 2750 extended battery on the Rezound. I bought two of the 2750 batteries with the phone as they where only $29 each at the time with the extended back.

Good lord, am I the only one that doesn't look at their phone while it's charging? I prefer to be asleep and let it suck as much power as it can. I will try your method, but you might want to mention to use the stock charger, since it's been my experience that it's the only thing that actually charges the phone properly.

Well that is because the charger that comes with the phone is 1 amp, versus the charger say I bought to use in my car is about half an amp. Cause it was meant for older phones. same as using USB. USB will take forever to charge your phone.

Are you on 4g or 3g? With my extended battery and a full charge my phone will be dead after 10 hrs with hardly any use

I'm totally amazed at the battery life I'm getting. The reason I bought two extended batteries was because I figured I needed them.
I have had a ton of phones and not one of them could stream audio for 10hours straight, I don't care what battery you used.
Today, I went to work at around 8 am. I streamed both iheart radio and Sirius radio online for almost the entire day. When I got home around 6 pm it was running on fumes, but it hadn't shut down yet.
If I didn't stream anything it would run for days I think.

I don't understand why I'm getting so much battery life on this phone. It's exceeding expectations. Not that I'm complaining, but my experiences simply are not jiving with the results found by reviews like Engadget's. I have the official extended battery which is 2750MAh, but I had a 35**MAh one for my Droid X and it died faster under the same use. Considering I never lose LTE signal at home/work, and everything I do over it at work is using LTE, I just can't fathom how this MOTHER-F***ING BEAST of an amazing phone lasts like 20% longer on a 30% smaller battery over my Droid X. (I'm not going by the battery life indicator, but purposely letting it die so I know for certain.)
Also, yes, I understand they were using stock battery in the reviews; but I used that the first few days before going back and picking up an extended battery @ half off normal price.
I love this thing, and I love HTC for having a 1% battery indicator on the stock device.
Oh, by the way; should I really plug it in at 15% remaining? I thought you were supposed to let it die when training new battery life?

Add a battery indicator widget; it goes in 1% increments. I'd LOVE it if you could have it show on the actual indicator on the notification bar, but I haven't found a way to do that; but I keep a battery life indicator on my main home screen, and yeah, 1% increments for the win.

[Q] Official battery, reporting false capacity

I've bought a new legit/official (has holo, serials etc.) Atrix battery.
Charged it to 100%.
During usage, its draining literally 10% an hour with very light usage (several minutes an hour). In short its draining at three times the speed of my 1 year old battery.
I've tried wiping battery stats but that didn't work.
Any ideas, or is the stats just buggered and I just gotta run it in? (ie it will go to zero then sit on zero for 5-6 hours lol)
note I've gone back to my original battery in meantime rofl
EDIT: The actual problem is that the batt is reporting much less capacity than it actually has

I have a similar problem with the original battery that came with phone it drains the charge quickly to 1% and on one 1% it gives a battery life of more time than the time it took to discharge from 100%.i was thinking of buying a new battery but now i am confused that what should i look before buying the battery to get a battery that can show me the exact charge on the indicator.
I have tried all tutorial of calibration used different roms and kernels but nothing seems to solve the issue.
well I might try that then, just let it run to zero see how long it lasts then see whether the stats come good over time
OK help needed.
The new battery is great capacity wise, lasts from morning to bedtime with >2 hours of bluetooth music, 30 mins calls, a ton of texts.

When I have battery stat problems the following has always fixed it:
1) leave phone on until it dies
2) take back off phone and plug into wall charger
3) after batt symbol shows 100% (without unplugging or turning off the phone) remove the battery. After a minute or so battery symbol will have question mark
4) put battery back in and leave it for at least 2 hours (seems like I have had to press the switch sometimes but you don't want the phone to reboot or you will have to start all over)
5) reboot into CWM and wipe the battery stats
6) reboot and it should be good to go
Anyone else found a fix to this yet?
I'm now running ICS (turl build) issue is still there.
Steps taken to resolve
- discharge to zero
- charge to max
- wipe stats
still there.

Nothing will work i have tried almost every tutorial. Recently i found out the phone is showing the the full capacity of battery only 500 that's why i think we will have to change that with the actual voltage to get a accurate battery indicator.What's ur battery full charge design check if from the root exploler

I'll try the insert empty bat into already connected phone, charge to 100% remaining off, repeat trick overnight, then report back.
FWIW on my 'good' battery which is 1 year old ROFL it says 1880
not sure how changing it would help though or is even possible?. It must be dynamically reported somehow as my good battery gives me a 'good' stat.

Can people PLEASE stop telling us to calibrate we've BOTH DONE THAT MANY TIMES NOW. The problem is that the capacity of the battery is being reported as 500mah not 1930 or whatever its supposed to be. THe actual running time of the battery is fantastic, just thinks its at 0 all the time lol

Droid x2 battery life

My wifes x2 display is using 59% battery. Weve changed the timeout to 30s and brightness down really low. But her. Battery still dies very fast. Its only 2 months old. We ha e disabled bt wifi and gps. Any other tips?
One other question. When her phone dies she cannot plug it in and turn it on or it gets stuck on the motorola logo. Qe have to wait till droid boot animation to plug it in. Any ideas?

If you plug it in from off do you see the charging screen? Try plugging it in and holding the power button simultaneously if the phone is off.
Is the phone rooted and romd or stock?
Is it running 2.3.4?

Its running 2.3.4 rooted but not romd. I had the phone for about a month and had no issues with it. However i never allowed it to die. Shes not a heavy user but my main concern is why the display uses 59% where my d4 uses only 26% on the same settings as hers. Can i unroot the phone in case i have to return it under warranty?

when the phone dies you need to plug it in and wait until the battery on charge only screen shows at least 10% before the system will, allow you to turn it on
if you have BSR installed tho, as soon as it dies you can plug it in and when BSR comes up you can just choose reboot system now.
and the reason you d4 uses less battery on screen it's because I believe it is an amoled screen, which consumes much, lower power levels than an LCD screen

First, make sure the battery is completely charged, then boot into custom recovery (BSR). Go to advanced options (towards the bottom of the list) and there should be an option that says 'recalibrate battery'. Once you recalibrate it, reboot back into android. I usually always let my battery run completely out after doing a recalibration before recharging it after a re-cal. If you find on your first discharge after recalibrating that your phone tells you you've only got 20% left and it would normally only last an hour before, depending if it needed the re-cal it may last 2 hours. Those numbers are just hypotheticals. Point is, recalibrating lets android know it's for sure 100% full at the start, but it doesn't necesarily know the end point until it gets there by allowing a full discharge. Also, the lithium batteries our phones use do best when recharged around 15-20%. It's actually bad to let them completely discharge all the time. And if you have multiple batteries and one may be sitting for a while, it's best to store them between 30-40%. Let me know if you need any more clarification.

More importantly, if you are already rooted and such, why not run a custom ROM? CM7 and/or Eclipse should give you a good boost in battery life. Running CM7 my standard battery lasts 18-24 hours with light ish usage. And that's with my original battery from when the DX2 first came out. I also have an extended battery I am running right now, but don't have data on that one yet since it's still discharging now. I do know that swapping between batteries of different capacities pisses android off sometimes though lol. Aside from custom roms, there are scripts and apps/software-based mods that can help it significantly too. Namely, wifi vs 3g usage, turning 3g data off when your phone is not being used, etc... I started off with an original DX but VZW gave me a free upgrade to DX2 after my 6th warrantied DX. I miss Rubix's ROM and being able to overclock and undervolt... My DX would last 2+ days sometimes when I had it all dialed in.
Its now my wifes phone. Since she already has had time getting used to stock i doubt she'll let me put a rom on it lol. But ill try

Well fortunately you've got a Blur-based and AOSP-based option for it. I know what you mean though, my gf likes her Sense-based UI, but had to give it up for a semi-funtioning Eris. I think she is getting a Bionic sooner than later... HTC is garbage.

Li-on batteries were designed to last longer when you don't let it die completely
start charging around 15%-10%, 5 is pushing it cuz its most likely gonna shut down before you see 5, trust me, it's bad for the life of tour battery to let it drain completely, just Google Li-on battery life, recommendations and u can read for yourself lol

Yeah I know you're not *supposed* to let them discharge all the way but sometimes you have to and sometimes it just happens. For instance, my extended battery that I just did a re-cal on the other day has been sitting at 1% for the past few hours and is currently reading 1day 12 hours of uptime. (I shut it off the other night though and it is still discharging from its initial charge that I did the re-cal on.) So if I would have recharged it at 5% or whatever, I would be losing a decent chunk of available battery because android thought it was empty when it really wasn't, thus skewing the battery's voltage window.

that will only happen with extended batteries or one of those "Chinese", aftermarket batteries
regardless, battery life of Li-on batteries will decrease from letting it completely discharge, the more times you do it, the less your battery health will be.(BTW when do you "have to" let it discharge completely? , I'm not "calling you out or trying to "make you look stupid" or anything, I'm just curious what you meant by that?)

Thanks for pointing that out. I regularly swap between my standard and extended batteries (both straight from VZW) because I'm always out and about and have used re-cal's to keep the perceived percentages from being skewed since I like to know how much life I have left in my phone so I know if I am gonna be able to find my way home or not, lol. (I ride my bike far and wide.)

I have two standard and one extended, I always use the extend first since it will never report correctly when I'm out, then I switch to the standard ones so when they are running low, I KNOW when they will die lol

If I keep my phone on charging even after its on 100%, it starts rolling back. As in from 100 to 99 then 98, even if its pluggen in.
Don't know what kind of a problem this is, hardware or software.
Or there's some issue with the battery.
Please help.

Sometimes I have the same problem. I dont know if it is caused of a program running in a background or what, but reboot helps

I know the reboot helps.
But usually I put it on charging at night before sleeping.
And when I wake up in the morning, the battery % becomes even less than what it was when i plugged it in.
I'm usually in a hurry then to leave for college in the morning . Can't go to college with battery % less than even 10

Maybe You have some program that syncs something all the time. Did You try to turn off data and wifi. You can always check it if the reason is the hardware or Software. Just make a backup of Your whole ROM, delete the data and leave the phone over night. I hope it is only software problem.
EDIT: Does Your battery go hot while charging? Oh, and try to wipe battery stats

Yes, my battery does get hot while charging.

Maybe there is really some program that is causing that. I had this problem rarely so I never cared. I had one program called Batterymonitor or sth. like that and it was the reason. Do You have such a program, that shows Your battery level or temperature?

Yes, I have setcpu and rom toolbox.
But would these applications really cause this problem?

The x10 charges the battery to full then if still plugged in it will stop charging until batt drains to set level ,then will charge to full again and over and over all night. X10 wont over charge batt when left plugged in. Kernel/bootloader handle this. There is an app current widget that can log charge levels.
EDIT: I had a tip on charging here but removed it after further research read more about batt here..

EDIT: the best tip I usr for battery life is, let batt runout until phone shuts off, then pull batt, then plug in charger, then replace batt into phone, then phone will boot, enter xrecovery on first boot and wipe batt stats. After wipe while still in xrec pull batt then unplug. Now plug in phone then insert batt. Phone should boot in charge mode( big batt icon only on screen) dont start phone untill light green for 1-2 hours to get full charge . I do this about once a month, when phone starts to shut off around 15%

As mentioned above as well, this is normal. After charging to 100%, the phone stops battery charging, and will activate charging again only when battery falls a bit (say 97%). Also, battery heating while on charging (and also when using the phone continuously while playing a game) is normal. Relax.. your phone is fine

I am having the same issue with battery... phone switching off at 15%, even at 22-23%, when playing a game or something. But switching it back on, and leaving it idle, phone might run for another 2 hours. So it is the extra load while running a game that the phone cant take any longer (i remember getting the 15%,10% and 5% reminders earlier while playing games)...? Does the battery calibrate method actually help in your case? does it go all the way down to 0% or 1% before shutting down.. ?
I just did this after posting that. And yes my phone reported warnings @ 25% 15 10 5 and then shutdown @ 1%.
This way is like reconditioning an old rechargeable ni-cad batt.
All this does is completey drain batt then, with least amount of drainage (phone on, apps& radios running) allows battery to full charge.
There is also a way called recalibrate battery. But this way over charges the batt.
EDIT: I think the phone load will effect reported batt left. I think batt gage use average loads to estimate remaining power. Meaning games, full brightness of LCD, radios -3g -GPS -WiFi -Bluetooth will use more than avg power
edit 2: I found this thread also has some very good points and links. after reading this i will not intentionally take my batt to 0%. I hit 0% about 1-2 times a month on accident as it is. i will just make sure when i do go 0% to wipe stats (dont know if it helps or not) then preform a long (overnight) full charge with phone off.
