[Q] How to get back to normal root? - HTC Amaze 4G

I recently rooted my amaze (unlocked bootloader first, so perm root) and then proceeded to put the BeastMod rom on the phone via recovery mode. My issue is i have been getting a lot of restarts and force closes and I want to see if i can just return to the normal root (i assume it is just stock sense or something). I would say my understanding and skills are beginner level, so if someone could give me some instructions on how to do this it would be helpful.
I have downloaded the RUU for t-mobile already and I just need to know what to do and if I need to re-lock, or unroot, or whatever.
thanks!!!

what exactly do you want to do? go back to stock root??? what does that mean? RUU's are not rooted. There are rooted stock roms you can download.

I try my best but it's difficult when I work up to 16 hours a day about 5 days a week. I need help with all the Q&A. There are always at least 30 Q's and only maybe three of us giving the A's.

Well, I feel your pain, i was admin on another forum (not tech, but still)...so thank you for your hard work. It probably gets overlooked.
In your experience, is beastmod stable?
I have followed all the instructions and done as I was told, and it keeps crashing a lot. I read somewhere that taskkillers can do damage custom roms. Maybe that's it? Idk.

I try me best to help out. I'm up late nights, so I usually try to help people on here its 4:21 am in LA right now. Hey binary if you don't mind do you have an instant message, facebook, google plust anything to contact you and chat sometimes its faster to do that then keep posting on pages and populating them with things unrelated, if you're not comfortable that's always fine, i won't be offended or take it personally.

Also, say I was to go back to factory (out of the box)
I would have to relock bootloader, install the PH85IMG.zip for TMo, and would that be it. Would I have to flash another kernal or do anything with that?

correct...you don't really have to to flash another kernel since faux's is really based on stock assuming you installed faux's kernel, you should probably go back to stock kernel...also flash recovery back to stock. search development and you'll find how to do all these.

I have everything however I don't like to use it very much because my employer likes to check for confidential information on it. Several of my co-workers have had their nuts cracked because of FB so everything is private and I only include people that I physically know such as close friends and family. You can catch me on Google Talk but I don't always have a chance to log on because I work. Although I'm always in front of a computer, I can't afford to be distracted so I don't log on very much anymore. I'll PM you my SN.

Ok, well I was using the kernal provided by X in his beastMod listing. So should i get faux? I will search the other topics. and by recovery you mean back to stock instead of CWM?
I just need the ability to take my phone in the Tmo and have it be like new out of box (warranty and all)
you've been helpful as well. thanks.

YOu will NOT have warranty anymore. you unlocked your bootloader, even if you lock it back it they will know...It warned you that you will void your warranty...and so did many pages on this forum...if you get lucky sometimes they do honor it...however you will be able to go back to out of the box.
check your version of software by going to settings, about phone, software information, software number, then download that software number listen in this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335703.

Haha, figured as much. I meant more along the lines that a customer rep wouldn't notice right off hand ha.

If you want to receive over the air updates, you must also flash stock recovery:

On the contrary, you don't need to re-lock your bootloader. I installed the last OTA with the bootloader still unlocked. Maybe I'm special though.

I would probably leave it unlocked till absolutely necessary. That way I could perm root again if wanted.
Also I never got your opinion on if task killers are deadly to roms?

Hate to spit hairs here but it actually warns you that you MAY void your warranty. If there is a physical problem or manufacturers defect there should be no reason for them to deny warranty due to unlocked bootloader.

[Story]this makes me sad :(

so i had this problem with my phone that about a 1 cm margin on the right side of my phone just doesnt respond and before you ask yes i factory reset and even went back to stock rom, but it just wouldnt fix it.
so had this problem for about one month and i got extremely annoyed with it ESPECIALLY because i got this phone when it came out so i still have more than a year left with this phone.
so i finally decided to give HTC an email about it.
they promptly responded with an email with a phone number for me to call and check on my warranty and talk about repairing my phone.
i called like a couple minutes ago and after like five minutes of staying in phone call limbo and listening to some catchy elevator music i got through to someone who sounded like she was tired because she slurred her words. it was not a bother for most of my friends talk like that. anyways back to the subject, i told them id numbers and told them that my LDI(liquid damage indicator) was white, which means no water damage. and she said
"well it seems everything is in order, your warranty is still in effect and we can replace your device's screen and you can have it back within two weeks for free you would just have to pay about ten dollars for shipping."
Eh i didnt care as long as i get this **** fixed. BUT THEN
i had to ask the question
what if i unlocked my bootloader?
she slowly responded with "well i'm sorry but that would void your warranty"
FUUUUUUUUUUU-
then i proceeded to ask her why, she said that if i sent in the device then more than just the screen would have to be replaced because they would have to get something with a locked bootloader. i asked how much...
$200 without shipping
well right now i am slamming my head into the wall for the unfortunate turn that happened.
i just thought to post this to let the community hear about.. well just to tell somebody, post your thoughts

dude! just make a cover up and re-lock your boot loader... they dont need access to anything to replace the screen.
its litterally like a couple screws, pull the phone apart, disconnect a ribbon cable, pull old screen out, put new in, and so on... (they dont need in your hboot)
so just lock it, call back, and tell them whats going on. dont mention anything about hboot/unlocking. just let them fly into it blind
i was thinking that but do you think that would work??
for some reason i think that it will leave type of footprint and then i get a call from HTC saying
"your device has had an unlocked bootloader, please fork up 200 bucks"
also another thing, do you think if i actually do that would it be safe to go back to stock rom, in case they test it and see the custom rom and sayWTFBBQSAUCE
F#$k that, send it without the battery and relock it lol

Use the S-Off method, but do not install Juopunut's HBOOT. It will say your phone is locked instead of relocked. Then you can use a fastboot command to make it S-On. They won't have a damn clue what hit them!
thanks everybody,
i dont think i will have to s on my bootloader because i have yet to s off.
this exact reason was why i was holding off on s off because that will definitely void the warranty, well i think i will start my journey on locking my bootloader,
so just to make sure, what should i exactly do.
this is what i think i should do
go back to stock rom, i think(btw if anybody has the stock rom, help me out)
lock bootloader,
lose root?
and then im set?
regardless i will wait untill this weekend to do any of that because i am busy during weekdays,
Also, to get s off, wouldnt i just have to do a command like 'oem lock'
or something like that

Well, most likely, your warranty would not be void due to your bootloader being unlocked regardless of what the rep told you. As long as rhe issue with the phone is a hardware issue, which yours certainly is, it should still be covered by the warranty unlocked or not..

You'll probably get flamed for not searching, as this is a common question. But anyway, go to htcdev.com and on the right side where it says choose device, look for 'other devices' or so me things similar. Also read a lot about rooting, everything you need is in the dev section. If you get stuck let us know
"We're coming from a pure power source"
What others have said. Just wanted to add in that your warranty will be void if you unlock with htcdev
To some it matters, to others it does not.

It does NOT prevent you from getting repairs through sprint or insurance
HTC's warranty is lame anyway. You have to send your phone to them and it could be gone for a month.

The disclaimer said that it may void parts of the warranty, so I'm hoping they'll still fix hardware issues like that. Unless they want to start making claims about rooting breaking things at a hardware level.

Not sure if you have rooted a phone before, but i just rooted my phone for the first time last weekend this way and it's really easy. Best of luck but i don't think you should have any issues figuring it out though.
This is the way i did it though. Having the written instructions and the video really helped. http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-4g-lte-root/how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-lte-unlock-bootloadertwrp-recovery/
S-off
If you root your phone on 122.651.3, it must be done through htcdev and you still could file an insurance claim with sprint?
Is there a way to S-off the phone...I will not touch until I can do both!
So, my predicament is a little different. Prior to the OTA update (not sure what the OS version was at that time) I used the one click script root method to root my phone, it worked perfectly. With root access, I installed GooManager and installed TWRP recovery. After that I used the Panda S-Off method to get to s-off. With all three pieces in place, I never flashed a custom ROM (primarily becasue they are all Sense based ROMs and I am looking for a way to fix the multitasking issue) because I realized that I didn't clear out my Google Wallet settings prior to rooting my phone. After reading a few threads on the NFC sensitivity I decided to RUU my phone back to stock to try to recover my NFC/Google Wallet functionality. After RUUing my phone, I was surprised to see that the bootloader was still reporting s-off, but recover was back to stock and I had no root access. I was able to recover NFC and get GW working again. At this point the OTA came out, so I decided to take it. Now I am on the latest OS version 1.22.651.3 and there is no root method available except the HTC unlock. I'm just wondering if there are any "unique" options for me since I have s-off, but don't have root?

Really? I don't know why but I was under the impression that if you were HTCDev unlocked that it would invalidate any repairs or replacements through Sprint as well. I figured they had an agreement to communicate this to one another. Have you had personal experience that can validate this?
[edit] I suppose you would just relock the bootloader and then unroot and Sprint would have no idea you ever did anything? Is this correct?

Sprint does NOT care if you are rooted. They will still repair the device if it is not rooting that directly caused the issue. Its a company wide policy.

Yes, you can can unlock via HTc dev and still get an insurance claim.
No you cannot get S-OFF (although the past S-OFF method worked even if you were already unlocked, so it may not even matter)

Theres no reason to wait. S-OFF wont wipe your data or anything like that. Do it while you still can. You can S-OFF the device and run the bootloader customizer so it shows S-ON and locked.

I just want the phone fully rooted like my evo and evo 3d were. but I'm reading about google wallet, rooting, unlocking bootloader, s-off, custom recovery, I thought this was all done in a step or two before...

It is pretty much 2 steps
Use this first (STEP 1):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671577
Then lazypanda (STEP 2).
Everythings automated. When you get S-OFF you can flash a custom ROM, or leave the one you currently have. Just remember to never take an OTA
I'd suggest running the bootloader customizer too once S-OFF has been achieved. Once again, all automated

Appreciate the reply. It's been years since I was a Sprint customer, last phone I had with them until now was a Blackberry Curve 8330, so their policies with various Android stuff is still new to me but I'm glad to hear it's not a big deal. I think I may actually htc unlock this weekend then and finally give some custom roms a test run.

Use the RegawMOD root, its automated and easy and he updated it to the 1.22....3 version, only problem I had was installing the root.zip in TWRP at the end of the install, there are real good instruction on pages 81-83 of that forum to help if you cant locate the .zip file. Worked great for me and am rooted, no s-off though will have to wait till there is a reliable exploit, the lazy panda method is too risky for me right now.

Used all in one tool on ATT version. Flashed TWRP. No OS to boot to.

I got way ahead of myself after receiving my HOX+ for only the difference of my HOX purchase and began to flash the worldwide development exploits to my phone.
I noticed in the TWRP thread, it said ATT users 'may' experience trouble, so I took the risk.
Noticed I couldnt mount system or Cache, did a factory reset before attempting to install SuperSU. Now Im stuck with no OS.
Am I stuck until we get more ATT exploits?
I see no stock ATT software so this leads me to believe I will not be able to see nothing more then the TWRP menu until USA gets on this thing. Correct?
I didnt do a backup.

Not a clever move. I don't know much about the AT&T device, but when I was helping Lloir test the first lot of custom recoveries, I accidently formatted my nand by trying to factory reset. It was easy to rescue for me as I had a RUU to flash. But AFAIK there is none for AT&T. If you have done what I did. I'm afraid your stuck with a brick until Lloir has finished the AT&T recovery and you can flash a custom rom.

You're stuck until we actually get a proper recovery. You will be doubly screwed if you flashed TWRP for the One XL.

I am sorry, but (a big BUT) if you had taken the time to read a little bit through the X+ forum for like 15 minutes, in particular through the recovery threads, you would have learned that the AT&T version is not yet supported.
I am sorry for the trouble that you experience, but it is always better to first understand completely before doing something, in particular with an expensive device like this one.
However, I don't think Lloir is far off of a working recovery.
Thanks man to pro

yeah lesson learn always read and don't assume even if you have rooted before :3
This is the first time i've jumped the gun like this. I just got so excited when they told me I could bring in my HOX and grab the X+ for only the difference. Out the store I was thinking "4 cores??? Im gonna hack this mother effer, PRONTO!!!"
Got home, saw the TWRP and All in One. I felt like it was a wrap! All in One, IIRC gave not one warning about worldwide vs. ATT, TWRP gave a warning about 'possible' issues. I assumed a misaligned touch screen or the sdcard message he posted or something minor.
It wasnt until I was already done, unlocked, and flashed when I realized I screwed up and started to investigate my mistake.
I am not blaming the devs AT ALL. It is my fault, being on the leecher end of the table, for not being thorough and researching before jumping into something crucial with such a valuable piece of equipment.
I hardly post on XDA, mostly because I have mastered XDA's, as well as Google's search button and end up finding my answer before resorting to wasting space, time, money, and energy on a crap post like this one. This also makes me a leecher, being as I never have anything more to offer. So I want to thank all of the devs for their amazing work throughout these years I've been on XDA and in front of a smartphone

Same here. Bricked mine and swapped it out for a new unit.

I honestly dont want to risk it, since my phone clearly says its been unlocked all over it! I dont know exactly how strict they are over ATT being as I just transferred from sprint. But at sprint they inspect your phone for about 3 hours before blaming it on you and voiding your warranty.

[Q] Rooting returned rezound

I just received a reconditioned rezound from Verizon's warranty department. I have 10 days with both (broken and reconditioned) phones. I want to root the new phone. I figure if I use a new SD card in the new phone and follow all of Nil's Business Sense instructions that should work. Then if I put in the old SD card I would have all of my settings and apps restored. I'm not sure if that really would work, that's why I am asking you guys & gals. I didn't have the guts to root the original phone, but now I am ready. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

As cslingerland stated, your SD card doesn't actually affect anything. You only use it to hold the roms and whatnot to install.

You call that easy? you must be a M.I.T. graduate. I graduated from Nova South Eastern University, and let me tell you, It makes no sense to me. That's why I am asking for help!
Pro tip: If you don't S-OFF, you can't brick this phone. It's actually pretty much impossible to brick unless you S-OFF. You can "soft brick" it, but you can recover. Until you S-OFF, you don't have enough access to the important stuff to actually brick, and you can do everything even when you're S-ON...some of it takes a little more work, but if you're worried about bricking, it's safer to stay S-ON.
So, I recommend staying S-ON when you're starting out. It's a big time safety net.

I've helped a ton of people unlock and root their phones via teamviewer. I'm guessing that you're installing a new RUU to get the latest firmware. Or trying to s off because of the sdcard comment.
If you're having problems the sdcard that you normally use could just be copied to a folder on your computer and then use it like normal, for a regular root and unlock it shouldn't wipe your sdcard.

I read a lot about the wire trick. Some people swear by it, others say it's a sure way to short out your phone. I've seen videos on You tube and the procedure looks pretty simple. I was nervous about voiding my warranty, but after just receiving my replacement (certified like new) Rezound, I think they just use the returned phone for parts for the next replacement, So wish me luck as I do the paper clip trick
One question... will my paid for apps live through the back-up to my sd card and back to the phone again

If you bought them from Google play or have the apk then yeaa. Just back them up to your PC if you have the apk. And I really recommend you don't s-off.... Unless you know what you're doing. One wrong move after you s-off and you have a paper weight and not a phone any more.

I concur. And I'm glad you said that cslingerland. I've read so many posts from people saying "just s-off" to people who clearly aren't that well versed in all this stuff and I think that's bad advice.
I'm still s-on and I don't see a need for me to s-off since I rarely flash ROMs. I have know problem having to flash the kernel separately. And I've always liked using fastboot rather than the various tools and PH98IMG files since I like to know/be certain about what I'm doing and I don't want to end up with various PH98IMG files lying around not even knowing what they are. Turns out a lot of people don't know that a PH98IMG file can be anything, it's just a method to make things easier.
My take. If you don't plan on flashing a rom per day stay s on.

Help Reverting Back to Stock

Hey all!
I want to send my phone back to HTC for some warranty work (warranty expires within the week so I need to get this done asap). I'm having some call quality issues as well as network issues (limited 4G when my wife's LTEvo is better). Anyway, I'm trying to get it back to stock and unrooted.
I found videos by QBKing77. From his videos, it looks like I'm supposed to lock the bootloader and then unroot the phone. When he shows the bootloader screen, his shows tampered and unlocked. The lock bootloader video is then supposed to make it say relocked and tampered and then the unroot will take away the tampered notice. The thing is, I don't see those on mine. I know my phone is rooted, is it possible I didn't unlock the bootloader? If so, is there a way for me to check?
Basically, I'm looking for the best way for me to relock my phone and have it good enough that nothing looks like I'm violating any warranty. I've seen things about RUUs, but there are different versions it seems. I'm just not sure where to begin or what I need for my phone. I did not unroot via HTC's website or anything like that. But I did it all about a year ago, so I'm not exactly sure what I did.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Viperboy has a tool that you can use to return your phone to a completely stock, locked state. You must be S-off in order to use it, but if you're concerned about sending in your phone that's obviously been tampered with, it's the best way to go, in my opinion. The link to his tool is below. Also, this type of post would normally go in Q&A.

Thank you very much. I'll look into this. Does this take my phone from S-off to S-on when it's done? If not, do I need to do that myself or does Sprint and/or HTC not care about that?
If they fix my problem, will I be able to root my phone again after this? Not a necessity, but I'm curious.
Oh, and thanks for being kind when I posted in the wrong section. If a moderator can move it, that'd be great. Sorry.

Yes, if you use the tool it will revert your phone to S-on.
As far as whether or not Sprint or HTC cares is almost anybody's guess. I've seen people say they don't care, and others say that they do. Just to be safe go back completely stock. You can always root it again once you get it back

Yes it will take the s-off flag to s-on, you will be back to stock, updated to 3.16, after that if it gets fixed/repaired you should be able to get s-off with moonshine / facepalm / dirty racun whichever it's easier for you...

Thank you both very much! This sounds like exactly what I was looking for. I'll give it a shot and see if I'm still having the issues I'm having. If I am, I'll send it back. We send my wife's phone back to HTC once (never rooted) and they were pretty easy to work with. Just cost us about $8 in shipping or something like that.
I am honest with Sprint employees about my phone being rooted whenever I have an issue. They never seem to mind, they just can't always be as certain if the problem is their problem or something from me messing with it...and I understand that. I usually test with my wife's phone and see if I have the same problem or not. Anyway, for what it's worth, Sprint has always been good to me as far as my phone being rooted, but I wasn't asking for warranty work at those times.
