[Q] Change to a diff. ROM - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone
This is a simple question for many of you, but not for me, I already know how to Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784
(thanks to CF-Root)
and how to install a Rom. But,what about how to change to a different ROM.
Now I'm using
Base band - I9100UMKK1
Kernel - [email protected] #20
Build - VillainROM 3.0
(I'm using this one, cuz I found a very descriptive tuto about this, for my GS2)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198334
But What if I want to change my ROM, What are the main points to check the compatibility with my device
PDA?
Base band?
It is neccessary change the Kernel?
I would like to taste the flavor of ICS
Note: I don't want to be annoying, including all my phone data, but as a new android user, is my reference for search info.

Heya Mate,
I just posted pretty much the same question, however, after skipping 1 thread repeatedly because it was labelled SGS2 Bell/Virgin Canadian Thread Q&A (Root/Unlock/Firmware) Modems/Mods I found more info in there than I have by searching!
Right under our noses huh?
Still a little confused, but also a lot clearer
Its the first thread in this forum

I wouldnt go for the ICS roms yet, there unstable and can cause problems with your phone if you dont know what you are doing.
Kernel/Rom version should match if you are using stock roms, otherwise custom roms will normally come with a recommended kernel.
As far as the baseband, you can mix/match, so just find one that works for you, or leave it as it is if its working fine, you dont need to match the version to your rom or kernel.
To flash a new rom, find one you like and follow the howto in the thread, but it will be very much like flashing villanrom.
Make sure to take backups using nandroid (to go back to an old rom) and titanium (user apps) sms backup+ (app i recommend to backup sms/call log/mms) as you will need to wipe data (thats user apps/sms/contacts not media/photos/etc) when you move from rom to rom.

Try the KI3 version, the VRtheme (aka Universal) version was a bit new at that point.
Unfortunately due to framework changes the newer versions dont run on VR.

[Q] rooting first time :)

Hello all,
this is my first time rooting and i have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616, im downloading the files as i type, so my question is, it it hard to root my thunderbolt? also ive read the pros and cons, and i would also like to know from u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
for those who want to just the question, here u go:
1) it it hard to root my thunderbolt? (following the link)
2) u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
yes im excited to attempt to trying to root my thunderbolt ^^
It's not hard, just fallow the instructions to the letter and of course make sure you have adb set up and the proper drivers installed. After that it's pretty much a cut and paste affair.
Second question: Root = freedom, simple enough.
I went to Youtube to setup my adb.

so for now its ok to have no busybox, after i install a ROM it will be in that ROM correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153055 this is the ROM i am thinking, will i be able to get that onto my phone? i did the 2.5 version
also ty i appreciate answering my questions!
Before you flash any ROM, do yourself a huge favor, and read the OP (original post) and then read it again. Follow the directons carefully. After your first time its like riding a bike. Search the thread before asking questions too since you will likely get hammered by people for asking questions already asked and answered. Good luck.
BAMF is a great ROM, you might search later in the thread for RC5, Adryn leaked a preview with a different kernel than RC4.

You'll need an MR2 radio for that ROM, I recommend the one from the OTA. You can find it in the development thread, it gets flashed through hboot.
Edit: And yes, the ROM you flash will have busybox built in. And +1 for the post above mine, use the search function, it works well. When you do have a question post it in that ROM's thread or keep it in the Q&A section. Best of luck to you.
Hey there! Yes, this is my first post in this forum I believe, but I've been a heavy lurker since December. Currently, my tbolt is rooted and has been for a few months. I'm running BAMF 3.0 RC4 and I can honestly say, the pros far outweigh the cons. A few of my favorite pros is the ability to run a wider selection of apps, more control, the speedier updates from devs compared to Verizon/HTC, overclocking, better controlled over battery life, no bloat removal..the list goes on and on. Basically, being rooted allows me to make changes to my phone to fit my needs. And yes, it is incredibly easy IMHO to root this phone. Good luck, and have fun.
Should mention too that I did mess up my radio when I flashed GB but it was quickly fixed by reflashing. So the only con has been my own fault. I also believe that you can restore the phone to a "fresh out of the box" state should you ever need to take it back.

Try the RC5 preview with the new MR2 OTA leaked radio. Smoothest combination I've used yet.
Yeah definitely would suggest flashing the official MR2 radio as well. It's been the most solid for me. Had issues with 2.5, and I had slow 3g speeds on the leaked MR2.

I'll try BAMF again when RC5 is officially released. My phone really likes Ziggy's kernels. Was flashing almost daily since I got my bolt trying to find decent battery life. Running Synergy now for a week with no issues. Liked the other roms, but Ziggy's kernel gives me the best life.

[Q] Email not working

Hello,
I recently rooted my phone using the tutorial here:
www[dot]youtube[dot]com/watch?v=P2KhSKpt4hs
after rooting and upgrading I've noticed that when I click my Email icon it brings up my emails like normal but when I select an email it just opens it and sits at
Loading messages...
and never really opens the message.
The odd thing is, when I open my email icon it shows I have new emails and updates the email list but when I select a message is just sits there.
Anybody know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Check out the stickies there are multiple return to stock roms and a number of custom roms for this device including ported ones from the i9100
mkay so I looked through some stickies and it brought me to the rom section. I'm pretty new so all I was looking for I guess is a rooted Gingerbread stock rom?
Not sure if that is correct or if I may have misunderstood.

sorry again, I have no clue, basically I am not sure what the options or features are but right now all i was looking for was a rom that was rooted and all the basic features work e.g. messaging, email, web. other than that I am unaware of any other features. I'm not sure what TW or AOSP is but I'll keep researching.
I'd return to stock if I were you, and start reading the stickies at the top of the General subforum, the the ones in the Android Development subforum. Don't worry, you're in the right place
so I was looking at
[ROM][PORT][4.2.1][AOKP/CM] Dirty RootBOX 3.3.1 v2 [12/31][AC!D][ThunderBolt]
what do you guys thing, I currently just rooted from ginger bread and thought Id prolly update it. Knowing im on Gingerbread is there any specail instruction or tasks that i need to be awear of? I have clockwork mod on my phone already.

well I was guessing that I'd just keep posting in my own thread. I've given up on the email issue and was recommended installing a new OS on my phone. So instead of posting a new thread I just switch gears on this one and kept moving forward. Is it better just to start a new thread on every question I have?

BOLPM custom ROM

Hello guys, I'm new here ^^
I just got my Phone back from Solid Vision.
I sent it within the warranty period because of battery problems: (flickering battery icon, very fast drain, etc...).
They told me it was water damage ("vochtschade": google is full of complains from people who got ripped off).
The phone never got into contact with liquid...
So far, so bad, but I didn't want to lose my phone even longer, so I paid them €85 for the repair.
But when I got my phone back, I noticed they put on a T-mobile ROM (the phone was operator free when I bought it, and it still was when I sent it)
So now my phone is full of bloatware, which I don't really like.
They told me that the their automated flash system automatically recognizes the appropriate version based on IMEI/Serial number. (Bull****)
I can send it back, but they will probably find some other "user damage"...
So, they can kiss my *** and I will just root and flash it myself (and put a custom rom on)
So far the story...
I want use either ParanoidAndroid or Resurrection Remix...
Which one is "better", of what are the pro's and con's?
And even more important, how do I get it on my Phone?
This is a screenshot of the software version etc...
Any suggestions / guides?
Best Regards, and thanks in advance!

1) There is no 'better' version. As stated in the xda-rules, these question aren't allowed because they're subjective. You can read the threads for the feedback users give.
2) Well, root your phone and flash the rom. Instructions are everywhere. Just search for them, because they aren't hard to find (another xda rule: search before asking ).
Beware of the brickbug that can appear in stock 4.0.4 (search if you need info).

The reason for this thread is that I'm hoping a dev would convert this rom so it works on our beloved 7105.
Is it even possible to port this rom over?
Anyway, would love to see it as there's a lack of roms for the 7105 compared to the 7100.

If it's on the A.T&T thread, then you can flash that Rom. Most of the Roms I use are from that Thread. Just make sure you have the right modem. I haven't flashed this particular ROM yet, but I'm getting to it. The new P.A builds have just come out, so I've flashed them this morning to give it a try. Got my Modem from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031575
Hope this helps. Just make sure you flash the right one of course. I would also recommend Flashing the latest Neak Kernel for AOSP/AOKP Roms. It seems to work the best. Also and off topic here, the latest Roobox Nightly has been released, just search GOOMANGER on your phone. That now has Halo and works really well. The main bug is the Expand screen part doesn't work properly, but everything else is really sweet. The PacMan Rom, the halo still has the SMS bug. If you get a new SMS and you click on it through HALO, it will exit out of the app you were in. So keep that in mind. Going to give the XYELon Rom a go tonight and see how that fairs.

So you say any rom or just certain roms will flash fine on our n7105 providing we ensure to flash the appropriate modem???
Hmm for some reason the recovery didn't let me install the latest version of AT&T Pac-Rom Any ideas? Wrong model?

Hi there, I've flashed pretty much every ROM that there is on the AT&T section and all have worked. I did flash with the proper modem on all of them. However, that said if most of the time if I didn't flash the latest NEAK kernel then at times I would get no reception at all. With the latest builds of RootBox, and Pacman i didn't bother flashing the kernel and it worked just fine. The T-Mobile Roms just don't work. I've tried to flash a few and they just don't even flash.
However, just keep in mind that some ROMS will change your build.prop like Skynote and Pacman, so you have to edit them. Also with Rootbox, you have to change the MMS.apk as the one built in is buggy. So i usually use the one I've ripped from the P.A builds as they work just fine.
In short. Yes. These do work for the n7105. Just flash the proper modem and you will be set.

If you are using CWM, it always tends to fail on you. I use TWRP and haven't had an issue since. Flash back to a stable ROM and install TWRP through GOO manager. Then flash it using TWRP. Be sure to do a full wipe. Then advanced cache and dalvik cache wipe. Twice for both. That is what I do make sure I have a clean system, then install the Rom, Gapps, Modem, Kernel. Kernel shouldn't be an issue with Pacman. Use the one provided.

Okay so I have a Samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9100. I have rooted the phone and I thought to have installed cwm (which came with the root)
but I still boot into stock recovery (even though Rom manager tell me I have cwm 5.x.x installed or something along those lines).
I know now that the kernel resets to stock recovery. So i am running 4.1.2 and my build number (found in 'about phone') is JZO54K.I9100XWLSW.
I have downloaded 'philZ-cwm6-XWLSW-XEU-5.06.1.zip' from his XDA thread, and was wondering is this the right one for me. And since I am already rooted and all that I was also wondering if installing this will clash with my root and mess up everything- thanks in advance, I really appreciate the help.
You got the right one and are good to go.It won't "mess" anything, you'll basically get a stock kernel+cwm+root in a single flash.Good for starters if I may.
This is the exact method I used to root, and now I'm happily running my (probably) 30th different custom rom.......

Don't use ROM Manager on S2. Ever. It's a sure way to screw things up. For some reason it seems to end up corrupting recovery on S2.
Why are n00bs so attracted to Rom Manager ? It's **** on any device. Only lazy people use it on the devices it actually works properly on.

There was nothing 'not nice' about what I said. Rom Manager is a POS. Lazy people use it. You weren't specifically mentioned in my post, you were lumped in with all the other n00bs. There's nothing special about you in that regard.
See ? That last sentence was somewhat 'not nice' *adds you to my ignore list*
okay thanks everyone for the helpful replies, also I was just wondering whats the difference between XWLSW-OXX and the one I am going to use which is XWLSW-XEU? just out of curiosity -thanks
