Is it just me or any one else experienced extreme slow charging on their Droid razr?
USB charging from my PC.. It was almost 3 times faster to charge my previous lg optimus 7 and blackberry storm.

So the typical PC does not put out 750mA on USB because the spec says they only need to put out 500mA. If you are using the phone while connected to USB it may never charge. It won't drain either.

I've not noticed anything out of the ordinary with USB charging vs. past phones I've owned, but have found it charges abnormally fast when connected to a wall charger.

Get a battery monitor app, put it on the charge, see how much charge is actually flowing to the battery... with a 1750 mAHr battery, you can guess the charging time..
From my packard bell laptop with USB charging it gets 850 milliamp...so charging time is around 2 hours.... from a Wall charger it gets 1100 milliamp, so 1.5 hours is enough....
From my HP laptop it has the charging of 450-500 milliamp so it takes around 3 hours...
I have used the manufacturer of the laptop because each USB chipset has its maximum power rating... USB 2 had 500 milliamp at max and USB 3.0 has 900 milliamp of power rating...... so it depends which chipset you are using and which port you are connecting to.....
If getting more confused, try the standard AC charger.....
Also, I think you should make sure to put your phone on airplane mode (or at least turn 4g off) and turn the brightness down while you're charging. This way, more power goes to charging and less to battery draining stuff.
AND if you're willing to spend a little cash, (or you buy your phones at Costco like me) you can get one of the multimedia dock thingies from motorola. It literally charges in 3 hours on there.

I did find a great widget, battery info, which when discharging, it will display percentage of battery left, and remaining standby time.
However, the best part is, when charging, out will inform you time left to achieve 100% charge.. Its really cool..

Math lesson!
The battery is 1750 mAh, that is milli ampere hours.
As such, it will supply 1750 mA, for one hour.
Charging is the same but backwards, 500mA is what the USB port on your PC supplies.
That gives 3,5 hours to supply the battery the required power, assuming 100% efficiency.
But lithium batteries need a trickle charge from 90% to 100%, so that last bit is usually performed in 1 hour, independent of what mAh the battery has.
So on our razr that last 175 mAh will always take one hour to charge.
So that means that we charge 1575mah at a fast speed, that leaves 3,15 hours to charge using USB, and 1 hour to top charge.
That'll give you 4 hours and 15 minutes through the computers USB. =)

Im probably not as heavy a user as some....but Ive noticed the same thing. I unplug my phone at 7:30 and plug it back in at 9-10 at night usually with 20% left and when I stay up late Ive noticed it takes seemingly forever to charge.
I believe it recommended it either the online manual or the quick start up manual to use the charger that it came with. It stated that other brands or 3rd party may not charge the RAZR fast enough resulting with slower than usual charge times.
I have even heard of some people loosing power while it was plugged in and being used. I believe the 3rd party chargers were to blame Like others have said, the USB charging taking FOREVER, a car charger is a little better but not much.
If you download Battery Indicator Pro (from the market) you can set an option on how fast you want the battery to charge via AC outlet or USB.
Will also give you a 1% increment battery display
The Motorola razr can support upto a 1000ma charger..... technically, it means that if u pop it in the wall charger it will charge at 850ma per hour... it will have a full charge in 2 hours.... but a USB port on the PC or laptop is capable of providing only 500ma, so theoretically, it will take more than 4 hours for a full charge....

I just bought razr after owning SGS1 for over 1.5yrs.
the usb charging is unnormally slow! even compared to SGS1 which has 1500mAh.
with SGS1 I used to use it for usb tethering and it charges in about 5 hours to full WHILE TETHERING!
But on Razr idle phone takes around an hour for every 5-10% of battery which is a lot!
I am wondering if there is any kernel fix or workaround that speeds up the usb charging, because this is not natural.
4 hours or even 6 hours is very reasonable charging time, but anything more than that is a lot.
I am thinking there is something wrong kernel wise.
edit: even comparing to HTC EVO 3D which has almost same battery capacity [1730 vs 1750] charges a lot faster than RAZR. and I do mean A LOT!

So, I don't know if this is just my device or maybe already known. I don't see it here(or google) so I am going to post this so others can find this info faster than the 2hrs it took me.
Some Li-Ion batteries have a low max charge rate. Meaning you cant "over-current"(mA "Milli-Amps" or A "Amps") them too much(saves life). Well my Razr just showed me this. This can allow you to charge the battery faster if you have one that is tolerant of the "over-current".
Apparently maximum for the Droid RAZR is somewhere between 850mA and 1000mA
Tried using an HTC @ 1A and no joy.. wont charge.. actually says charging.. but the battery seems to have flipped the switch to not charge; and just continues to discharge normally; even the hidden status(dial *#*#4636#*#*) says charging but obviously not! Tried different HTC models and different cables. I am now only using my Moto supplied cable.
Even after it was dead. It would show the charging screen @ 0% and the light would be red. Stating that you cant turn it on cause there is not enough juice to finish boot. It would never go Green no matter how long I waited(10-15 minutes) usually only takes 5 minutes.
Found my OG Droid charger; remembering that it was lower than 1A. It actually is 5v 850mA. Charging away!
Remember the stock charger is rate @ 5v 750mA - this means you can probably use chargers from 700ish to maybe 900ish mA. I cannot confirm these estimates. Anyone else seen any other rates work?

Also - Thinking more on the subject - this could be the "Authorized Charger" bull that Moto likes to put on its devices i.e. The RAZR flip-phone was notoriuosly bad about this. Even my old nextel "beep beep" had this problem with OEM chargers. Had to spend $15+ on the official one. Again - if this info is wrong in ANY way please fix it or remove it.
use official 850mA charger and be happy. Motorola also confirmed using 1A chargers without any problems but any ways original ones are recommended.

Couple of questions: What does this mean to charging via USB instead of mains? Is it the plug or the cable that is rated to a certain ampage?
One more question. I found another usb plug rated to 300mA. I presume using this will just mean the phone charges slower? It won't have any negative effect on the battery?

Just adding my experience... Have been using an iphone wall charger w/ the usb jack on it and the supplied motorola cable. Its listed as 1000Mah. Battery Monitor Widget shows it charging around 945Mah. Doesn't get hot, charges like a bat out of hell. Down side is phone is about 60% unresponsive during the charge.
Found a little info on this. Apparently different cables, when plugged in, short different contacts to let the device know what it's plugged in to. Resistors change the current. Audio out can tell if it's plugged into a dock versus USB versus wall charger. The Verizon replacement didn't work for me, but an hard incredible one did. They both charged but only the htc recognized computer connections

My stock Razr wall charger is 750mA. I use a 1000mA car charger and it works fine - doesn't get hot and charges faster.
But sometimes you do have to be careful. I had a friend who's noob mother fried her Bionic with a charger that was too many mA for it to handle.

strange... my stock charger's rated 850mA.. maybe because i use international GSM version of RAZR.. but it charge just fine..
but even i tried charge it with blackberry's 700 mA charger or my ipod touch 1000mA charger it both charge just fine.. and it feels like the 1000mA charge slightly faster..
too bad i broke my old nokia n900 1200 mA charger..
I'm using an HTC 1A charger: the RAZR doesn't become hot while charging and it's charging faster.
The limit is 1A anyway.

Ever since my first motorola I've noticed that the stock charger is 5.1 volts.
Charging with other brands always seem to give worse battery life.
My old Rizr only lasted a day when charged from the USB of my computer, but 6-7 days with the original part.
Some of that is apparent with my car charger too, it says it's taking charge, but sometimes it will run backwards with GPS running..
I experience the charger issue last night.
I had low battery when I went to sleep, put the cable in and it said charging.
Came late to work because the phone drained the battery instead of charging. I used a 5V 1.2A charger and its been working great until last night. And I noticed my original charger is 5.1V 850mA for the Razr.

So I am eagerly awaiting S-Off and flashing new ROMS/kernels/radios and I started to think about how slow my Rezound seems to charge. I know that the Thunderbolt had some kernels that included fast charge capability. Just think of the extra juice we can get in a short amount of time with FastCharge, UnderVolt/UnderClock, and more precise power management.
Does anyone know if this is in the works for the Rezound?
My Rezound charges up pretty fast, especially compared to my Droid Charge.

not sure if it works on the computer, but in my car it definitely worked
yeah definitely do a search for USB AC Charging. You can take those car chargers and wall chargers that don't give you the full 1A and do a quick solder job on them to make them work. I just did it with two of mine and it works great. Battery info now says Charging (AC) instead of charging (USB) and they both pull north of +700mA while charging instead of ~+300mA when on regular USB.

i did that. opened one up and clipped the green & white data cables. the phone still says "charging usb" though and doesn't seem to charge much faster...
Yea, I have tried every possible method of grounding out the data pins. I currently have my phone connected to a computer power supply I converted to a desktop supply with 4 USB charging ports. It can supply up to 13A if the device needs it. The data pins are all shorted and the housings grounded. The phone still says USB Charging....It does seem to pull more current and does seem to be charging faster.
I know that there is some hardware limit on the charging current, but with an SBC kernel (please someone make one...) I think that this bug will be fixed. I am going to try the Trickle Charge technique from previous HTC phones to get a full 100% charge. I will let you all know how it goes.

So I tested this idea that Fast Charging is "built-in", I used a usb cable that I split connected through an Ammeter to test how much current the phone was drawing from the charger in the one and off state. From my tests I found that my phone, no matter what the state does not draw more than 400mA from the supply. My charger is capable of supplying up to 13A to the four usb ports I installed. I also tested this with the HTC stock charger rated at 1A. This had the same results. I think that there is a hardware/software limit built in.
Just to be clear and justify its place in Dev, this thread is asking if there are any developers out there who are working on an SBC (Superior Battery Charging) Kernel for the Rezound. I fully understand the workings of power supplies (I'm an Electrical Engineer) and am just trying to see if anyone is working on this.
And it still belongs in General. That doesn't justify it. If YOU developed a Kernel, or were posting it, then it could be posted here. Questions, suggestions, complaints, ideas, etc belong in General.
Not sure accurate battery monitor widgets are, but mine has shown upwards of 850mah on charging and over 700 on draw (never saw that on my thunderbolt).
It does seem to slow down as it gets close to full (over 90%), then I never get more than 200mah charge.
The beast? I got mine but haven't powered it up yet for charging purposes. There is no light indicator that tells you when its done.
Got mine yesterday and I charged via AC and it took about 3 hours to complete. After letting it drain over night after 8 hours of heavy usage, I'm charging via USB and it's taking forever. With it on and after 2 hours, it was only at 15%. Now turned it off and it's been 3 hours and it looks like 75%. BTW, press the power button once and the screen will show the batter gauge.
you should charge it while turned on and for 6 hours or more for 4-5 cycles. Let it go down to 5% for those 4-5 cycles. Do not let it turn off from lack of power.
That is from instructions I received from a third party battery which had these detailed instruction to maximize capacity. I am sure you will get 1000 different ways but that is what I use and have always had good battery life.

This thing pretty much requires the cable that came with it to charge at full speed. Older MicroUSB cables charge at a much slower rate and are recognized as USB devices when plugged in. It must be because of the higher capacity battery. When you have the right cable plugged in, though, it charges pretty fast.
I'm noticing that even using the wall charger and the USB cable it came with, it's taking about an hour for the Note to charge only 15%. Anyone else noticing this? Is it normal that the first batch of charges takes this long (at that rate it would take 6+ hours to charge from 0-100%)?
My note charges very fast when I use the ac adapter and super slow when I use the us from my computer. About 1.5 hours on the ac and more than 3 hours on my pc's us

Its always a good idea to charge using the AC wall adapter. The USB port on a computer usually supplies ~.5A @ 5v to charge the phone, the included Samsung wall charger supplies double that with 1.0A @ 5v. That is the reason you see such a big difference in your charging times.
(Some computers now supply more than .5A through USB, but .5A is most common)
USB3.0 can supply 5.0v @ 950mA to charge, but the kernel isn't set up to take advantage of this, I'll see if I can change that (it would only affect charging while booted)
Just shy of the AC adapter for those of us with USB3 ports

I was excited reading this because my new laptop has a 3.0 port. However, I then remembered that my power brick for my laptop is kick ass and has a USB port that charges devices at 1A anyways. Haha.

So I got it down to 5% and then I plugged it in at around 8pm and at 11pm it was at 100%. Not bad, not great but seems about right. Now my question is I see a notification that battery is fully charged and to unplug charger but Im going to bed soon and am going to leave it plugged over night. Is this risking the battery in any way?

That would be the only use for my USB3.0 ports so far. Have yet to even need to utilize it.
The charger that comes with the Note can charge the battery in 3hours via ac. I wouldn't suggest to charge via usb, just because it's way too slow. Im using my playbook charger to charge my Note, Galaxy Nexus , and my bb 9900. This charger is 1.8a, it nearly charges 2x faster than the regular 1a that comes with most phones. Same thing for my car charger 2a, i even use my ipad charger to charge my iphone 4s and it's way faster!! Use more powerful chargers... Not more than 2a or your device might melt down!!

That's weird. I was under the impression that GS Note only accepts 1.0A of power. Well at least that's what it saids at the back of the phone. I've got an iPad charger that draws out 2.1A, maybe I should give that a try.
So I will get the regular charger for gs3 that comes with the phone (tomorrow when i get the phone). but i also have the HP Touchpad charger which gives output of 2.0A. I was wondering if I charge my phone with the HP charger will it actually charge is faster then the regular gs3 charger? the reason i ask is cause in other threads ppl have mentioned that it only charges faster with non - stock roms like aokp or aosp roms. please lemme know if this will work. thanks

I've used my BlackBerry PlayBook charger on mine and it doesn't charge any faster. That charger is 1.8amp.
It will not charge faster. The phone only draws as much amps as its allowed to. Whether you use a 1 amp charger or a 2 amp charger, it'll only charge at the phones own rate

A lot of chargers will be rated less than the stock charger. Especially cheap car chargers. In that case the phone can only draw at the charger rating.

The values listed on the charger is the max output it can provide. If the setting on the phone or the hardware is set up to only pull 1A, then it will always pull that unless that is more than what the charger can provide.
That being said, you should be able to take the battery out and charge it faster separate from the phone. I've always read, though, that charging a battery faster ( i.e. turning up the current) will/may reduce the life of the battery

the only way I have found to charge phone's faster is to power it off and then charge...takes about half the time to fully charge
none of the 2 amp chargers make it any quicker

I have a Touchpad charger and it can be used, though I noticed that the phone got hotter than normal, IMO. The phone comes with a 1.0A combo wall charger with USB cable. Interestingly the Samsung stand and battery charger that comes with the spare battery comes with a .7A charger but the charging unit itself is 500mA/1A on the input with output at only 4.2v @ 450/900mA.

For the first time I let my XTZ drop below 40% battery.
I chargy only with the Sony's cradle since I don't really carry it around.
I get to putting it on charge when it reached 10% battery, but few secconds after it showed charge animation a pop up appeared that battery is low and should be charged. This kept showing every few secconds.
It looked as the charger contacts where not making good connection. So I tried moving it around, checked the contact pins and the lever if it pulls them out and springs where working. It all seamed to work ok. It was late and I had it wet 3-4 hours ago so I just left it off the dock till morning.
When I got up I tried to put it to charge again, but same buggy pop up started to appear...
Now I left to work, set sound off and left it to charge with hopes above 10% it will be ok...
Anyone else experienced this?

As engineer I don't usually read everything about the spec...
So the charger I used was rated at 2A, industrial quality mind you, while the cradle is actually rated at 1.8A input and 1.8a output...
I tought the cradle is just two wires and some weights, but seems to be more than this.
Anyway the XTZ started to charge fine with the Sony charger at 1.5A.
The tablet also charges faster with the 2A charger, but only from the USB.

I've been using an iPad charger for the last 6 weeks to charge my SXTZ either directly through the USB port or "indirectly" through the Sony docking cradle. I've had no problems - as you can see from the above quote.
By the way (not that it matters) I'm an engineer (electronic) too.
