Sony Tablet S has been successfully rooted - Sony Tablet S

Hi XDA,
I have successfully rooted the Sony Tablet S. I will be publishing detailed instructions in the next few hours. Please be patient, I promise they will be online soon.
A few words of warning. I'm not going to have time to automate this root process into a one-click script, or provide technical support. I'll be sure to provide enough details so that root can be achieved by others, and hopefully someone else will step up and automate the process for those who aren't comfortable with ADB.
Another downside is there is a very real chance that exploiting this bug requires wiping the /data partition of the device. On the device I successfully rooted, /data remained intact, but this may not always be the case. Of course you can back up your apps, contacts, etc. beforehand and restore them after the root is complete.
Stay tuned for an update with the full instructions.
Regards,
Dan

Heyo everyone,
Awesome job djrbliss! I just picked up this tab a couple days ago, but was thinking of returning it when I found a lack of root. I'm glad I was lucky enough to see this turn around. Thanks again for all the hard work!

I wanted to let everybody know that I'll be posting the detailed instructions tomorrow morning. Sorry to keep you waiting.

How stable is it, will it be able to allow modifications to build.prop etc?
Wouldn't want to brick it.

Awesome work man

Much thanks. Been waiting forever.

That's excellent! just as I was about to sell my Tablet S, finally a saviour on a white horse (so to speak!) has appeared!
I will keep my word for the donation. Once you post the details and they have been verified, I will be giving you my promised part of the donation, and I will actually double it (it's not a big amount, so don't get ultra happy, but anyway!!)

not to sound skeptical, but i think i'll save my boner for tomorrow morning. >_>

Not to burst your bubble, but root is not unlocked bootloader, which is what you need for full ROMs and recoveries

A video guide posted on you tube of the method when ready perhaps?

So did you access to a beta firmware ? ;o)

Thankyou!!!
Congratulation guys! Although i know little i can do, i am at your service for anything i can provide (webspace, beta testing, anything) ..
May i recommend to you guys Or the moderator to lock this thread until further news, so it doesn't derail and get flooded with trash !!
Many thanks again .. for your kind work
Can you guys let us know if this a fairly easy root process or does it require opening the physical phone and modifying hardware a la JTAG? I am comfortable rooting normally (like on the Nexus, HD2, etc.) but not doing a JTAG mod. This determines if I'll trade my Nexus for an X10.
Thanks!

That's fantastic! You even beat SE before they could get the new update out
So the question is, can we restore factory firmware with this root if we need to send our phone into SE for warranty issues?

Hey all!!!
Just want you all to know I am back and ready to go. I plan on working on this device a lot more now that I’m happy with what progress is being made on my other 3 devices, along with the fact that I am no longer on vacation. I wanted to give you guys an outlook on what I am looking on working on over the next couple of weeks:
Working on getting to inject new kernels using hkvc’s method
Finding new ways to restore 1.4.0
Updating NARS
Building a rom to try to inject using the 2ndinit.
Automating a lot of things for you users whom just want to use the market place.
A Secret Project with AdamOutler (hopefully, DO NOT ASK WHAT IT IS)
I also wanted to thank hkvc for all of his work and Dean for all of his work through the last couple of weeks, you guys have done some amazing work.
I will be in IRC working with the devs to get these things running along with answering any of your questions.
Keep up the good work.
Looking forward to seeing what you guys accomplish.

Completely new to rooting.

Hi all,
I am very fresh to this forum. Even though I got my account created in 2006 on this website I never used it.
All over the internet and the forums people mention about rooting the phones. I never really cared about rooting my phone out of the fear of bricking it. So I always put that option away. Now its serious time to learn it, as I am understanding the real benefits of it.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Note LTE SGH -i717D which is from the carrier Telus in Canada. How do I start of with rooting on this device? What is the latest version of Android available for this device for rooting? Are the custom ROMS really flawless?
Somebody please kindly help me get rid of the starting trouble I have.
Thanks all.

This has got to be the easiest method of rooting. It's what I've used on a few different phones and has never failed me!
Custom roms vary in stability. If they are based on source code they are going to be more stable than others. They will say "built from official source". Other roms can be just as stable depending on the developer and how much effort was put into the rom. You have to read the threads on the roms to compare issues if any, then pick the one you want to try.
The best advice I can give you is before you install or flash anything you verify it's for your device, and read the instructions at LEAST twice!
Welcome to xda ... I suggest you first read the xda rules. This is the general forum. Not for questions. There is a Q &A forum to ask questions in ... After searching.
That said ... Super everything thread is for you.

Admin, my intention isn't to hijack this thread. But I thought I'd ask prior to starting a new thread since I having the same concern, and before I get flamed. Please let me know which approach would be suitable to ask more questions while staying on topic.
I've been researching and reading tons of information everywhere. However I reached the conclusion that the more I read the more confusing it became. Whenever I thought I was ready to take the plunge, It's so overwhelming even figuring out what's current or what's outdated methods and files needed - I simply can't catch up without direct assistance.
OP: Thanks so much for starting this thread. For me, being a long time Android OS lover, yet entirely newbie when it comes to rooting jargons - I couldn't have said it any better - you took the words right out of my mouth!!!... The only tiny difference is that I have the SGH -i717R (Rogers).

Hi Lousk,
I know its really hard for a newbie to even think of where to start when it comes to rooting, because there are tons of information on rooting all over the internet and moreover confusion too. I learned it the hard way and I am glad to say now that I came out with flying colors. As with each official update, my device was getting totally sluggish, non responsive and out of all very little battery life. I couldn't stand this at all, one evening I sat on the internet, took the whole night before starting to do on anything with my device.
I didn't install any custom roms, but I rooted it which in turn helped me turn off a lot of services running in the background and also uninstall all the Samsung bloats, mainly the touchwiz. That thing is really resource hungry. Now my device is working at lightning speed and I have a feeling that it wont be obsolete in another 10 years.
I have all the files and also the instructions on rooting on my drive, unfortunately XDA is not allowing me to paste the link over here unless I have made 10 posts. They say it is just to prevent spams. If you are willing to give me your email id I can sent the link to you.
Go ahead and root your device to get the full potential of your unit.
Good luck,
Sumesh

You guys are great!

i think everyone is tried of waiting for official root for 257

this rooting and waiting for it for over 10 days, for 257 makes me wonder if i made a mistake in buying this phone as it seems devs are nt interested in this device, I envy now samsung owners as rooting never ever took so long, while we here have to go thru many steps to root 257 which i don't like to do.
Is this an indication of how the dev section especially for important things like rooting will be for every firmware, can somebody do something about this and contact the devs that do dev rooting to help us out.
It's the same story with the Z1. Sony fixed an exploit from the last build, so devs have to find a new one. My guess is that Doomlord and other devs are working on it, and it's clearly hard to find an exploit this time around. They'll get there, but give them some time. The FXP team is also in direct contact with Sony's dev team, and the FreeXperia Cyanogenmod ROM is a result of that collaboration. Why would Sony fix that exploit? Security. Not to screw with the devs, but people with malicious intentions.
Sony is one of the most dev friendly manufacturer out there (with Oppo), and this doesn't change it. They aren't actively trying to stop devs, like another manufacturer that ends with sung.
If you're really in a hurry and need root now, then downgrade to 532 again, root and upgrade again through OTA.

One of the most important things to remember on XDA is that its a community of people that want to help. Asking for an ETA, or insisting on a member to find an exploit quickly wont be received well.
This is my first Sony device, and I've found the core members active in this section to be some of the best Ive seen in my time here. Lord for example is almost always one of the first to reply with a helpful comment, Avetny, SpyderTracks... I could go on and on..
anyway like lord says its a new device, and give it time dude.
Thank you
you r right hamdogg i apologise for negative bursts

I guess people are waiting for vRoot to be updated. It's straight forward if we're on a firmware before 257, but it becomes a little more complicated if we're not. It's not hard, but it's a little time consuming with all the downloading and installing of software.
I wish we had a simple, one click solution that is made by an XDA dev that knows his/her way around these things so we aren't forced to wait for some "outsiders" to do it for us.

True :good:

Root is coming! Not kidding :) (mm)

So with the help of a wonderful man named @kryz I was able to dump our init file to him and he is going to be able to setup root for us! This was a lot off help from the DirtyCow threads and the universal utility of it. Also the thread @abine45 made regarding a temp root shell which gave me just the little bit of extra permissions I needed in order to be able to dump our file and get it to him. But seriously @kryz is the **** and you should buy him a coffee even before this comes out just for the hard work he has put into it thus far. Hang in there gang.

Wow, I am super glad I could be of help! Was just about to try something new, but with this I won't have to do anything else. Sorry I wasn't more of a help because I was busy. This is great!!
I'll be checking back regularly to get this baby on MM! Thank you for all your hard work!
Waw thank you alot! What version should we be? I'm on 23A is it okay?
Has anyone checked to see if the exploits still work after the last 2 security updates?
So let me just clarify, I'm on VS99024A. PLEASE DO NOT UPDATE JUST BECAUSE OF MY POST. I'm going to make a guide for the exploit and post it here in our forums so be patient. Trust me I'm as eager as you are. @Haxcid I'm not entirely sure but I bet people will try it But the jist of it is, if I was able to get the DirtySanta exploit to give me temp root, and the DirtyCow exploit is 100% compatible with my firmware then I'm pretty sure it should work for the updates THAT ARE OUT RIGHT NOW. I have no clue about the ones to come. I can guarantee they will patch dirtycow at some point.
So for those of us who pledged, it's almost time to pony up! I can't wait!
Thank you guys for your hard work on this device! I really appreciate it.
holy sh*t!!!!!!
fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!
yeaaaahhhhh baby! you da man!!
Woot!!!
I hope updating to 25A didn't ruin it for me... but fingers crossed.
seems like we got some fresh blood in here! Hats off to guys and gals that do this for the love of doing it.

I have contact with the guy who is helping root, and so far what he's told me is that it should be universal.
Correct it should be universal.
Thanks for the continued effort, many of us are still here and so excited for this!
I knew the "best brains" would find some way to work around the road blocks in Marsh Mellow.
I've got my fingers and toes crossed! The LG V10 is the Best and WORST smart phone I've ever owned. Best for it's outstanding features, WORST because of how Verizon has turned it into a turd by loading it with crapware and BREAKING functionality with sloppy updates.
