Yes, you right. Teoretical locket bootloaders can change ROM without kernel.

1. Unzip the file, you get filename.elf
2. Put the elf file into fastboot folder on computer
3. Turn off the phone completely
4. Hold volume-up button and plug-in the USB cable (to enter fastboot mode)
5. See BLUE LED on the phone
6. Open Command Prompt in fastboot folder (Shift+ Right Click Mouse, choose Command Prompt)
7. In command window, type "fastboot.exe flash boot filename.elf" (don't type double quote)
8. Wait for flash process completed, un-plug the phone, turn it on, here you go with new kernel
flash kernel with fastboot
for installing a kernel you can use fastboot
the phone should be in fastboot mode:
shut down the phone
push the volume op button and connect the usb cable (the led-light should become blue)
windows
fastboot.exe flash boot kernel.elf
unix
sudo ./fastboot flash boot kernel.elf
kernel.elf is the name of the kernel
Or you can use the unlock tool which is in Xperia S development section and where it says select IMG or SIN file locate the kernel. Click Flash and you are done. Make sure the phone is in fastboot. Also if you want to enter recovery, when the blue light is on, hold the Volume Up button

Can you see if a usb device is connected at all? with lsusb command?
If I connect the phone in recovery and type lsusb there is no device listed.
So I guess the usb connection doesn't work on windows either.
Can someone confirm that usb-connection in recovery is not working in windows?

a few days ago I tried to root my xperia S to get more functionality. So i read on the internet on several blogs and started to download a rom. First i unlocked my phone with fastboot.exe. Then i try to boot via Command prompt. It says everinthing was okay in about 120 secs, but when i disconnect and tried to start my phone, i only got the sony logo and that was freezed. Even if i reboot, it cames again. I've tried some other ftf files to flash, but nothing worked. Now my battery is empty, and i don't get the phone back in fastboot mode.
Anyone have tips for me? Im very new in it so please help me...

For now, charge your battery first. U atleast need to have 80% charge before u can fastboot/flash your phone.
- (Only If Your Phone Doesnt Start) Press Power Button+Volume Up for some 10/15 seconds, u will get three vibrations which mean u just hard reset the phone. It normally takes about 2/3 minutes to boot up a phone after a new flash or kernel has been installed. If not then follow the the below instructions after the hard reset and see if it works.
- Assuming that you have already got the downloaded ftf (Firmware file) saved in the FIRMWARE folder of flashtool, if not then save it.
- Open up your flashtool.
- Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN key.
- Keep it pressed, connect the USB cable to your PC (assuming that u already have the usb connected to the phone)
- Release the Volume Down key when phone's GREEN LED lights
- Click the flash button (yes: the thunder icon up left)
- Select "Flahsmode" and click "OK"
- Select your desire firmware and click "OK", DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE
- Flashtool will prepare the files for flashing, just be patient
- Flashtool will start flashing automatically, let it finish to 100%
- At the end, Flashtool will prompt a line saying u need to check Unknown Sources And USB Debugging mode and thats when u know that u have successfully flashed a stock/custom ROM.
- Disconnect the phone, power up and give it some minute to boot up and work.
- Have fun :highfive:

Depending on the Firmware/ROM the rooting method varies, i use Advanced Kernel Build14 on my new stock ICS firmware but always used DoomKernelv0.4+Recovery to Root Stock GB firmwares

How to Fastboot and just Root without Recovery and back to STOCK KERNEL:
First of all i will advice you to do this if ONLY you are planning to root your phone but want to come back on your stock kernel. Its a good thing to do if you have just flashed a new firmware like 6.0.A.2.45
Here's what you do:
[ requirements ]
# bootloader of the device is UNLOCKED
# Download and install FASTBOOT DRIVERS (DoomLord)
# Downlaod and Unzip FASTBOOT BINARIES
- Unplugged your USB from pc and Turn Off your phone
- Rename Advanced Kernel Build 14 to kernel.elf or unzip DoomlordKernelv0.4, unzip it and copy kernel.elf
- Open Fastboot Binaries folder
- Go To Fastboot folder, paste the kernel.elf file
- Press and hold VOLUME UP key.
- Keep it pressed and connect your phone and pc through USB.
- BLUE LED light will turn on means you are in fastboot mode, release the key.
- Fastboot folder opened, press SHIFT+RIGHT MOUSE button on the screen and choose Open Command Window here.

and your phone will restart. Give it some minute and it will boot up plus you will have root access :highfive:
ONLY IF YOU WANT TO GO BACK ON STOCK KERNEL WITH ROOT ACCESS:
- Assuming you have 7zip installed in your system, if not then google, download and install the programme.
- Right click on the ftf (firmware) file.
- Choose 7zip > Open Archive
- Click kernel.sin > Extract and save it anywhere in your PC
- Connect your phone through USB (You Can do it even if your phone is ON)
- Click the THUNDER ICON.
- Choose FASTBOOT. Choose OK.
- Click Reboot into fastboot mode (via ADB) if it gives error on flashtool then click REBOOT INTO FASTBOOT MODE ( via FASTBOOT)
- The Phone will turn off and will automatically go into fastboot mode ( BLUE LED )
- Click SELECT KERNEL TO FLASH
- Choose kernel.sin
- Give the kernel some seconds to flash and the phone will restart.
- You will see the SONY logo again if you have done it correctly ( YES YOU WILL because you just successfully flashed the stock kernel)
- Wait for some minute and the phone will reboot with stock kernel still with root access to it.
ALTERNATIVE WAY TO FLASH THE kernel.sin :
- Copy and paste the kernel.sin file over at the fastboot folder in fastboot binaries. Delete the kernel.elf
- Type fastboot devices
- Type fastboot flash boot kernel.sin
- Type fastboot reboot

Follow the above steps and you will definitely have a success
I dont think i can charge my battery. When i put it on a charger, the led is burning red. I've done that for a hole night. But if i disconnect, and try to power up, it doesnt react at all. When i connect it on my pc, the pc doesnt recognize it as a device, only the red led is burning. After a few time the sony logo appears. But stil no recognizing by pc, and still not 3 vibrates after trying a hard reset...
okay, after 3 weeks of waiting im back. I had brought de Xperia S to a telecom store to fix it, but they said that it was impossible for them. Now, i tried for my self again. There are some things to explain.
1 flashing a kernel(eg. kernel.sin) is possible.
2 then, i want to flash a the system partition
3 if i do that via the command prompt by this command it says it fails
4 if i do that by the flashtool by clicking on the thunder icon, then choose the flashmode, and choose the version to load, it's unpackage some files, but then it asks to put the phone into flashmode. If i do that by pushing the volume downbutton and then connect phone with PC, the green LED is burning, but the flashtool still asks to put into flashmode. So it does not start to flash at all, because the phone is not really in flashmode.
Anyone suggestions??
You say you unlocked your phone, do you mean unlocked the bootloader? If it's stuck at boot loop this is sometimes due to locked bootloader. Try to unlock again making sure it has correctly unlocked.
If your pc cannot detect your phone in flash mode, it may be that you don't have all the drivers installed. I don't understand 2.
All in all if your phone is in flashmode but it still says put phone into flash mode im going to presume the drivers aren't installed (or installed correctly).
Here is what I have done in a similar situation.
1, Hold the vol up and vol down buttons pressed at the same with your thumb the while holding the full button pressed, press down on the power button, you are now holding power button and volume +/- at the same time, maintain this pressure for a while, you will feel 1 vibration but keep pressing until you feel 3 vibrations then take your fingers off the power and the volume.
2, Press the vol down and insert your usb that is connected to the PC. you should get a green light, if not try # 1 again 2-3 times
3,Recharge it should only take an hour or two to get decent charge.
4, Start flashtool or PC companion. flash or update.
U should avoid unlocking ur device if u r a noob..and wait for devs to develop a method that roots the device widout hving to unlock bootloader like recentlyBin4ry has developed

Finally, I found the solution by installing flashtool update 9.6.0. With that installed, my phone went into flashmode and it was flashed well. A new question: i installed a rooted version of the ICS firmware. But now it is now longer possible to install updates. Is that a known issue, and is there a solution?
Using Framework Tool I change the animations and applied it to current framework I didn’t replace it. Now I’m stuck with a boot loop. My device is Sony Ericsson Xperia mini (ST15i | 4.1.B.0.587). I have a backup of my system folder and I tried to replace the framework-res.apk using fastboot but I Couldn’t I get this error massage “error: device not found” (I’m sure that I have connected my devices and the LED is blue too) (when I run the command ‘fastboot devices’ I get ‘BX902VFMGZ&ZLP fastboot’ ). I have installed CWM but I can’t ever reboot in to that. How do I recover my device from this boot loop. Please help! (I don’t know much about command lines or any advance things please be kind enough to answer in simple way as possible as you can, I really appreciate that). And I tried

Have you tried flashtool. Try taking it back to stock.

I connected it in flastboot mode flash tool show that my device has connected too the guide box showing how to connect in fastboot mode is till there is it supports to go away when i connect it? In flash tool 'Device connected in fastboot mode' is show in the log but nothing happening other that how do i know whether its completed??

1.Download the correct firmware file for your phone at the bottom of the post.
2.Make sure Flashtool is installed.
3.Place downloaded firmware file(.ftf format) in Flashtool\firmwares(by default C:\Program Files\Flashtool) folder.
4.Start Flashtool.
5.Click the lightning button and choose Flashmode.
6.Firmware should appear there, if you have it in correct folder. Choose it.
7.Turn off your phone, connect USB cable to computer, then press Volume Down button and connect USB cable to your phone.
8.Flashtool should detect your phone and starts flashing. Follow the instructions.
9.When it says „Flashing completed“, unplug your phone and turn it on.
note: plug usb cable with volume down to flashtool(you get mesaGE "DEVICE CONNECTED IN FLASH MODE" IN LOG) and flash the firmware from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27376024&postcount=3

Man why so complicated when u have backup enter cwm choose custm restore and restore only system, or make a flashable zip with only framework-res apk??

Girlfriend tried to update her Sony Aqua M4 e2306...
she says that the boot loader was unlocked, and she installed the twrp update... and the root check came back rooted.... she powered off the phone and put it on a charger. ...
a few hours later she tried to restart it and only got the Sony Xperia screen then reboot loop.
I've spent 2 days reading everything that i can find and trying various solutions but most won't work because it won't stay connected long enough to use companion, adb, fastboot, bootloader, etc. When the devices is seen by pc it is only for a moment and comes up as a generic MTP device or a hard drive i can't open.
I can get the occasional green or blue lights and sometimes a generic battery symbol by powering off and pressing + or - with power, but never get a recovery or boot load screen... only alternating "sony Xperia" and darkness
also, Emily won't update.
I've tried multiple solutions using different versions of SDK, ADB, sony and xperia Companion, fastboot, bootloader, odin, pwm, and more on multiple machines from XP to Win10, but nothing seems to even make a dent!
I've removed the back and disconnected the battery for 2 hours and am currently trying to research a more physical hack/repair using riff jtag.
i see many people with "boot loop" issue , but no one seems to follow through and say how to get out if you don't have the option of booting to anything....

I have the same issue. I have an unlocked bootloader and booted with boot.img. everything was fine for a day or two, and when I started to factory reset my phone it is causing bootloop issues. sony logo and black screen. It never appears on my computer when connected to use adb. Any idea on how to fix this?
My mob is not able to flsh the stock rom......der s a error showing cannot open bundle....help me out plz
When i do VolumeUp & connect my phone it connects to windows with blue led on phone and after ~6 seconds it just disconnects and shows battery charging thing

some mysterious, magical stuff hapened and i entered fastbootmode
can boot recovery and boot.img from fastboot and now everything is fine

then, i've try to install root (following a tutorial for this device and this comp.) but i could not enter to FASTBOOT MODE
try using:
- (vol+) + (plug the phone)
-(power btn) + (vol+) + (plug the phone)
-(power btn) + (vol+) + (vol-) + (plug the device)
and the only thing that happened is: -Vibrate + sony logo ---> normal boot

Then i try to enter fastboot using the adb command {ADB REBOOT-BOOTLOADER}
but it just reboot normally (sony logo and then start normally)
[[ADB do recognize my device and all drivers were properly installed; but can't enter to fastboot mode]]

I've try to reflash my device again, but then i couldn't be able to enter to flashmode
{ with the device off; press vol- and then connect to usb}
after several attempts using - [(power btn) + (vol-)] i entered flashmode and reflash my device...

then i activate dev mode: [usb debuggin and OEM UNLOCK]
and try to get to fastboot mode, but the same results...
i got my device recognized by {ADB DEVICES}
but can't get fastboot

Then the user who's helping me told me to reflash using this config
[in excludes section check all except AMSS_FSG, AMS_FS1, AMS_FS2,BOOT DELIVERY, KERNEL. Don't check anything else.]
But i can't get flashmode now... i try all the combinations, try in ubuntu 16, and windows 10... but nothing
the device starts normally nothing wrong.... except well, i can't enter any -mode- now...
any help?

Anoyone knows how to fix? Maybe is a problem of the cable?
PD: Tested with official cabled and turning Off OEM unlock and still the same.

Not sure what your problem is exactly but it is most likely a problem with the cable or the s1 driver's(if your using window's?) one or the other ,
However i need to point out that you must have your OEM lock at the SWITCHED ON position(allow the device to be oem unlocked) or you will trip the frp at the next reboot and will have to reflash your firmware unnecessarily , so to sum up Oem unlock at the switched on position

the drivers are all installed correctly, I tried doing this with the OEM off and on and it did not work
none of the methods works, adb does normal boot
recovery reboot (and other apps) crash or boot normal too
volume (+) and power button only makes the phone vibrate (and sometimes the Sony logo appears)
I can't stress to you enough that Enable Oem need's to be on the "on position" so switch it on (allow the device to be oem unlocked)and leave it alone it's nothing to do with you not being able to get to fastboot. If you trip the frp on your phone you will not be pleased.
with that said with your phone switched on and USB DEBUGGING SWITCHED ON plug into your usb on computer open a command window and input the following command- adb reboot bootloader you will now see your blue light on the phone this means your sony is now ready for you to flash a custom recovery (assuming you have unlocked your bootloader ?)

I managed to root it for now, using magisk_manager.apk and a boot.img, I extracted from a file named "TB-8505F_S100133_200316_BMP.zip" (which is the latest firmware for the M8-8085F)
am unable to find any TWRP for the device.
but at least: got root now.
OTG and Charge Simultaneously

I recently purchased the Lenovo tab m8 to replace the outdated navigation system in my car. I thought that since it came with a dock station that I would be able to connect the otg cable on the micro USB port. However this does not work, if it’s charging on the dock and I connect the OTG it stops charging. Does anyone know how I can die both things simultaneously?

I aquired the tb-8505X (LTE) model myself, but was surprised by not being able to dig up the rooting method specific for this model from the internet for two weeks now.
So far, my attempts to aquire root have got stuck at the initial stage of having my W7-64bit laptop communicate with TB-8505X via (first) ADB (lists the device) and (second) fastboot (no devices or waiting for devices).
My suspicion is that while ADB has at its disposal the correct W7-driver, subsequently fastboot is unable to operate with that driver.
Internet search shows the <fastboot-waiting for devices> to be rather common, but without coherent solution.
Any thoughts welcome, thanks!

I only plugged in mt 8505F, typed the command "adb reboot bootloader", waited until Windows installed the drivers and I was good to go.
After this started the root process

How did you actually root it?
I tried patched boot.img, won't work, tried patched recoevery img the M8 is in a bootloop.
Only boot up after I flashed standard recovery again

Yes, enabled all three of them.
Then installed the ADB/Fastboot package on W7/X64.
Then the usb driver/drivers (don't know).
Then from the admin CMD adb list devices (returns device name)
Reboot tb8505 into fastboot mode.
adb>fastboot list devices (returns waiting for devices...)
Any other subsequent fastboot command returns the same ''waiting for devices''.
Could be this is better attempted from W10,Ios or linux.
Any thoughts? cheers!
I think its a driver problem, which adb/fastboot package did you install?
When you are in fastboot and you open your device manager, any device which shows an exclamation mark?

From CMD C:\adb>adb devices -l
returns

Disconnecting usb & rebooting 8505X into fastboot mode, reconnecting usb:

I am assuming the device shows it is in fastboot mode, its listed in Device Manager under Android Phone(?) as ADB Interface
After reboot it is listed fro me under USB Devices as ADB Interface. In fastboot boot the driver is from Mediatek, in working mode, the driver is from Microsoft

Installed mediatek drivers for fastboot, to no avail.
Despite setting the usb preferences to file transfer, the 8505X resets that at every unplugging/rebooting to charging via usb/no data transfer, which also could be the problem, as before entering fastboot mode, usb is disconnected.
In fastboot mode no listing under USB devices in my dev mgr, btw.
Dev mgr shows Alcatel ADB Device>Lenovo Android Interface (as before) and moreover Lenovo Tab M8 under Portable devices. That's in normal working mode.
I presume you are on W10?

managed to unlock the bootloader on TB-8505X by connecting it to an apple mac instead of W7. Worked via ADB and fastboot, without need to install USB drivers manually.
What would be the next advisable step(s) to take in order to achieve root?
I had a look @ the TWRP site, but there was no TWRP recovery offered for the TB8505F/X.
Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers!

1. Go to Lenovo site and download Rescue and smart assistant. Install and run.
2. On the rescue tab you can download the firmware for your tab (it needs to be connected to the PC).
3. Goto where you downloaded the firmware. In the RomFiles folder find the boot.img file. copy it to your device.
4. Install Magisk Manager on your device. Run and select install. select the option to patch a file and select the boot.img file you copied to your device.
5. markdown the location that magisk shows where it saved the patched file. Copy this file back to your PC.
6. Flash the file to your device with fastboot flash boot <patched file location>
7. reboot your device and run again magisk manager this should install the magisk zip file and you are rooted.
Is there any custom recovery and roms available? This tab is quite awsome

So i hope that there's a method to invoke Fastboot or Download Mode by other means than ADB.
While on all other devices i have to keep power Button plus vol up or down plus sometimes Menü Button pressed, my Mediatek tablet requires holding vol up or down while attaching the thing via usb, w/o touching power to power up into Fastboot.

Holding down the down vol while pressing power gets you to Fastboot mode.
That's the common method. Good. On my Acer you need to attach a usb cable even for accessing the stock recovery. But i will dump it anyway, a Tab M8 FHD has been ordered...
