I use adownloader for all my torrent downloads, its actually a nice app. But ran across a problem this morning when trying to download a 7gb file. I get a message stating android does not support downloads of files larger than 4 gb.... Is there a way around this limitation?????
it is a limitation of the fat32 sd card. Can't have files larger than 4gb. So the app is probably hardcoded to not let you download it. But I hope you aren't torrenting over LTE... that is the reason people like me are stuck with tiered plans.

Not to be argumentative, but no it's not. Verizon's just greedy. They're still making money hand over fist from unlimited users.
What do you need a 7gb file on your phone for anyway. And as far as the data hog thing goes whether its the main reason or not it definitely doesn't help, and yeah what can your phone possibly do with a 7gb file, unless its a 5 hour movie you are abusing your data.
I've have unlimited data and I don't think using it anyway I want to is abuse. Sucks for you if you signed up for a tiered plan lol. But the amount of data I consume isn't what this thread was posted about...

Actually, it is. It costs roughly $5 to send a gig of data over wireless data networks when customer care, backhaul, electricity, etc are all taken into account. That means that anyone who uses over 7gb of data on their phone is costing the carrier money. That usually isn't an issue. Most people probably pay around $30 a month for data and use about a gig maybe two. So the carrier makes $25. But then there are the jerks who pull down 80gb/month on wireless ruins it for everyone because they cost the carrier $370.

But let's do the math--the average user data/month is 435 megabytes. Using your 5 dollars/GB figure, which seems totally plausible, that means that on average Verizon is making ~27.50 in profit per user, whether they're capped at 2gb or unlimited.
This is based on AT&T's figures, but apparently their remaining unlimited data group comprises a 5% that uses more than 2gb a month. That means that 95% of their users are making AT LEAST 20 dollars in profit, if the demographics for Verizon comport with AT&T's, because they use less than 2GB. (30 dollars- 2GB x 5 dollars)
That means Verizon is making money absolutely hand over fist. The average of 435mb includes my mom's iphone, which uses maybe 5 MB a month, and that jerk for tethers 80gb. The 5mb a month crowd massively outweighs the 80gb a month crowd.

I feel like people use either 0-4gb or like 50+gb. So if the average person uses 2GB, but someone else uses 50gb, it takes the "profit" from 11 2GB users to cancel him out.

On att right? You use more data on LTE doing the same things. I used to use 500mb/month on my 3G phone. Now I hit 2GB doing the same activities each month because I can consume way more web pages in the same amount of time. Att probably did that study on their 3G network

The average data use doubled in one year too... wow. So average $22 in profit on someone who uses average. But for someone who uses 50, it still takes 10 people if you are counting $25 average spent on data. Yep. But remember, according to those figures only 1% of users use more than 4.5gb. It still takes 6 gigs of data for Verizon to take a loss on you. So we're already talking about a fraction of 1% that Verizon might be taking a loss on. Their pricing models are designed to maximize profit, but even with unlimited data and current usage patterns it'd be damn hard for them to lose money.

But I have to agree, if the storage can't handle that big of a file, maybe better to do it on a computer anyway.

You are sorta correct. I really don't care about unlimited data. 4GB is plenty for me to never need wifi. And when I do need wifi, well, my sigpic you can see that that my school's ISP is plenty fast lol. To the point, your analogy is a bit off. It would be more like getting my amount of gas limited so I couldn't drive as fast. LTE phones are like fast cars... I have one, you have one, but since some of us have our gas limited we can't drive full speed all the time even if we are capable of doing so and want to.

I can see his point. As Verizon switches all devices over to LTE (they have said no more 3g smartphone) and the networks gets more congested, I expect them to start throttling the unlimited users.
There has already been talk of data plans becoming speed based instead of data limits the way wired internet plans are.

I don't think the contract says anything about being able to cap 4g speeds for those of us with unlimited data. 3g yes because it is capped at 5 regardless. Mobile broadband cards contracts for LTE list a 5GB cap on unlimited. Cellphones contracts do not. If I remember correctly.

no, but all mobile contracts have fair use policies that leave a lot of gray area. I think in the next 2 years after most everyone is on lte, the data landscape will look much different.
Shoot, I still remember waiting forever for skyfire to stream video to my moto q9c...

Concerned they'll end up saying screw it and implement data caps.
I value unlimited Sprint plans enough that, out of principle I'm considering just forking over the monthly $...perhaps getting on a favored list lol!

I guess the issue is whether you use the tethering abusively or not... I use it to provide wifi to my tablet on the road (it is used in lieu of the phone) and in the car when my kids are in the back with their notebook (once in a while). Overall my usage is consistent with a my phone usage as ...

The fact that they don't limit or even slow you down when you reach 5 gigs of services is why I switched back to sprint.

It's going to happen cause people are greedy and are gonna continue to do it whether we like it or not. Sprint will eventually make us pay for the tiered data plans, its going to happen. I hate thinking bad ****, but this is one of those things that I really think is inevitable.

I won't say it'll never happen.. But, the unlimited data is one of the few perks that brings in/keeps customers for Sprint. I haven't been treated badly by Sprint, but I've got no reason to remain loyal for loyalty's sake.
I doubt they will. Over time most data will become wireless anyway. Once all is on 4G or LTE, it won't matter the bandwidth as much. Sprint already charges more for premium data anyway. Not to mention their voice coverage sucks and the unlimited plan is what helps them keep customers. I would switch to Verizon as soon as Sprint says the unlimited plan is changing.

I Don't know alot about it but is there really a differance between using Pandora,Netflix,dishnetwork,ect..... on my tethered gtablet compared to directly on my phone. Not sure......But it does enables me and my kids to enjoy this entertanment in the car without totaly tieing up my phone....Thats just my opion

100% agree on all fronts.
Their CS is fantastic, bar none...but without truly unlimited data I no longer give a **** about that. If I have to pick between the big 3.....AT&T would have the fastest 3G and most pervasive 4G...Verizon would have the best "all around" pricing and fastest 4G and Sprint would have....what? The worst coverage AND crappy plans but pleasant customer service? No thanks. I'll take verizon.
...I hate AT&T with a passion. I have them for home internet service. I have never in my life been treated so poorly by a service I pay for....paying a bill over the phone or online is a gigantic pain in the ass...and I have never ever had a service shut off for paying a service IN FULL, EARLY until I had the modern-day incarnation of AT&T....and I am far from alone on that.
This is Sprint's ace in the hole...well, that and Google recently buddying up with them....but...lacking unlimited data they have no compelling reason to stick around.

As far as data usage, not really. However, it increases the potential for additional/more data usage as you might not of loaded it on your phone if that was the only option.
Personally, any reasonable usage is fine. Big difference between checking email on a tethered laptop.. and torrenting.

This pretty much describes my tethering usage, except the kids part.
I like the leaked plans from AT&T for their LTE pricing. This is based off of what Lulsec stole today, but apparently AT&T is going to go with speed tiers when their LTE is released instead of bandwidth caps, you just pay for how fast you want your internet. To me that makes more sense.

Yeah, umm, unless that torrent download is an absolute emergency (and I actually have been in that situation before...on the road at a trade show....needed a kinda huge file I had hosted at home....) you are just torrenting tethered off your phone to show off...even 4G sucks relative to even a basic cable-modem connection.....
I think the people who use 10+gb a month tethering illegally should take a step back and think about what they're doing. Just pay the price every month to tether the right way. Because once you guys really piss Sprint off, that 20gb you use every month is going to cost a fortune thanks to the tiered data policy they will enact. Then you'll be paying MORE than you would have if you had paid for the tethering.

So, Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint was asked some pretty upfront questions about Data caps and it's competitors who all seem to be using tiered data plans now.

They have better signal in my area and with a price increase (if they do data packages) ill be paying close to 200 a month for 2 unlimited lines so why not just go to a "better/stable" service provider if I will be paying the same ammount...
Verizon is expensive and sucks I know but i am not betting on anyone else to put a 4g/LTE in my town other than them :/

The pipe into my home should never have an artificial limit put on how much I download or upload. I should pay for throughput. The cap being imposed by how much I could theoretically download in a month at my selected rate maxed out 24/7. It is artificial scarcity. If I'm already subject to the ebb and flow of the network why the hell should I also have a cap imposed? Sure, that might smooth it out a little bit for a little while...but they will continue to add more subscribers than their infrastructure can support...and that's my fault? Our tax dollars went to help them build out that network that they are now trying to rape us for, they DO in fact owe us a little something. Stop overselling your networks and imposing artificial caps on a resource that isn't subject to scarcity, especially when my speeds are at the whim of the condition of the network at any given moment.
Wireless, however, is a slightly different beast. Without a gigantic technological leap we have a ceiling that dictates how many people may be connected in any given area at any given speed at an given moment. I do think caps on wireless are bound to happen...however our requirements will also increase every year. It will be like inflation, you'll always get just a little less data than you'll want but that will increase every year and be, for the most part, manageable. So long as the dollar-to-data ratio stays relative in check I'm fine with that. Right now a 5gb limit is a tad tight for $80 a month....so I'm glad it is "unlimited"...but next year I'd better be getting 10gb a month for that same $80 (probably $90 inflation adjusted the way the dollar is headed, hopefully no more).

I've been with Sprint for such a long time, it's nice to see them stepping up their game these last couple of years. Unfortunately, if they go to a tiered data plan, it would cost me the same amount to go with Verizon, who has better coverage here AND 4G here as well. Sprint does not have 4G here.

everyone paying what they pay right now stays unlimited. if you want a 2gb cap? cheaper data plans! don't change our prices, but add new plans with caps if you want to jump into the whole "NO SOUP FOR YOU!" trend.

If Sprint exists as is but has to go to tiered plans I would not expect them to cost nearly as much as Verizon's or EVERYONE would jump ship. Sprint knows this. I wouldn't worry about it. As long as Sprint is the little guy they will offer something to positively differentiate themselves from the pack. ATT has the best speed, Verizon has the best coverage, Sprint has the best price. Unless Sprint can capture either (or both) of those two factors the only option they have is price as 'features' don't exist to differentiate in the post-smartphone world.
...and if Sprint does capture either or both of those elements then prices can and would go up as people flock to Sprint...then they aren't the underdog anymore, then you go to who is....or move to who has what you want the most.

Honestly I would go back to tmobile or ATT if they had 4G here or to Verizon for that matter...
People complained about the phone selection sucks at Verizon and they didn't have dual core phones right away but **** look at sprint it took them almost 3 months to get a dual core phone after ATT and tmobile got theirs
I hate the thought of buying anything named "droid" but hey its my money I'm spending in the end... And sprint sucks balls in my town of 78k people..... And there isn't even a service center if i did have problems with my phone within 100 miles of me

I'm fortunate. I have good 4G service nearly everywhere in my city/state. So, this is going to effect me if they push to a tiered system

That and I think a strategic partnership with Google...HYPER INVEST IN 3G and 4G, DITCH THE 2G, VOIP+Gvoice for EVERYTHING. Use those lower 2G frequencies for mind-shattering 4G penetration.
Now they are merely a wireless data/communications provider. The 2G setup is quickly becoming superfluous, as did AMPS towards the end of the transition with dual-mode phones in the early 00's.
Hopefully Sprint leads this trend...it will happen. Just watch...

Oh may god. I remember actually thinking about getting a "surferboard" but my old Nokia phone because I got no signal where I lived. a 100 dollar attachment that allowed the phone to get analog signal, drained battery, and cost ridiculous roaming fees
I have broken 2 gigs twice in the year I've been on Sprint.
Amazon had a podcast app for free a couple of weeks ago. Then I started listening to The Regular Guys out of Atlanta. Podcasts will chew thru the data. A couple hundred megs a day listening to 3 hours of podcasts. Last billing cycle I broke 2 gigs. And the show is a riot. I litterally LOL in my cube.
I actually just saw the Tmobile unlimited family plan commercial. Said unlimited a few times. But in small text at the bottom of the screen is says 200mbs of Full Speed Data.
So, they start throttling you after 200mbs? Wow... I know for a fact I go. Over 200 a month.

Lmfao I dunno but I just came over from tmobile to sprint and I had 5GB on each phone each month... They ended up letting me out of the contract early with no ETF because I was throttled for 3 month straight. And i got to sell the phones I had for profit

why are you guys tripping out. You will be locked in regardless. Verizon still is letting their unlimited 3g customers keep unlimited 4g if they get a 4g plan, and as long as they stay with verizon they keep unlimited. ATT allowed all people to renew their contract and keep unlimited even after their contract was over.
According to T-Mobile's website, their new 4G Unlimited plan has no slow downs if you go over a set amount. So I wonder, why does MyT-Mobile page show that I have Up to 9765.6 GB of full speed data? I mean, I doubt I'll ever use nearly 10 thousand GB's of full speed data but who knows.
I saw that as well, I guess the system maybe requires some kind of integer to work with. But let's be honest who can possible use an average of 325GB per day in a 30 day time frame? Doubt our devices can dl that much per day to begin with.
I realize it's darn near impossible to do but it sure will be fun trying. Right now I have my Amaze in my desk dock and have been streaming the 9/11 memorial on http://www.ny1.com/content/pages/general/124256/ny1-live-video--9-11-anniversary-ceremony. I've been skyping and strictly using my S3 as my data connection for my laptop too, dl dumb files for no reason at all, barely capped 4GB tops in one day but I'm still pushing to see how far I can get, life is screwing it over though, lol.
Yup, its almost impossible to use all 10TB of data...unless you're downloading torrents all day, or running a high traffic server lol
Well I didn't want to start a new thread so I figured I could ask here.
I called t-mobile to switch to the new Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan, currently on the Unlimited - Premium 5GB plan, and I was told I would have to switch my rate plan. I am currently on Preferred FT 1500 NW and the retention department allowed me to keep myFaves with this plan, a while back. Now the rep told me that I would have to switch to one of the current Classic plans in order to even add the Unlimited Data plan. If that is the case my cost will go up around 100-120 a month in order to compensate for the minutes the myFaves is saving, just to switch to the truly Unlimited Data plan.
Does what this rep told me sound right? Does anyone still have an older plan still and switched to the new Unlimited Plan? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Actually, mathematically you should never be able to reach it. If you average 12 Mbps down, that translates to 1.5 MB per second X that by 2,592,000 seconds in a 30 day period its under 4000 GB per month. Even if you doubled that speed and were consistently using the web it would be under 8 TB of usage. Sorry, I was bored and math is my thing lol.
It probably would be wiser to switch to unlimited everything. Talk, Text and Data. $100 a month is really steep. I'm gonna go to Tmo today and see if I can make my account better. Currently I'm only paying $145 for 3 lines. My 3rd line is free till Jan 2014 because of the back to school promotion. But its only 500 talk and unlimited text. My 8yr old doesn't need data. She can connect to WiFi when shes at home.

9 Terrabytes is more data than your phone could pull down if left downloading 24/7 for a month...
It's a 'limit' in the same sense that a sign stating 'Speed Limit: Speed of Light' on the freeway would be... Yeah, it's a 'limit' number, but it's physically impossible (in the most literal sense) to get there...
So essentially it is unlimited

Lol, when I saw this on my bill, at first i thought it was 9.XXX GB and I was ready to flip my ****. I didn't realize until googling it and reading this post that it's actually 9,XXX.XX GB... I have never used that much data in my life.... even on Comcast business. I think we're good here.
Unlimited data interrupted by RST packets about once an hour?
Does anyone else here have their data stream interrupted regularly like clockwork getting a browser message back "The connection to the server was reset...?" It happens twice an hour, on the button for me. I heard that Tmo interrupts heavy users, but if it doesn't happen to any of you, it's got to be just me. The packets don't interrupt bitcomet, and I think they don't interrupt https, but DO interrupt http. It doesn't happen when I'm using SSH with a proxy, but that is slow, as it's a $1 proxy. Well..., anyone got an idea?
Incidentally, Tmo had a great discount for a small business plan going, it was $39 for 1000 anytime mins, unlimited txt/mms, and 5gb data (or it was 2gb and they grandfathered me 5gb). At the time it was going, a year ago, but worth checking now to see what prices are, they allowed a change for data from the 5gb to unlimited for only $5, so now I pay a few cents less than $50/mo for what I already described to you. It was as simple as paying $10 to the state registrar (your state may differ), and getting my business name, then applying online at irs.gov for an EIN (employer identification number) which was emailed to me immediately.
I took the business name certificate and EIN, along with proof of my address to Tmo, and they gave me the plan without any trouble, which surprised me, because it meant the cost of my service dropped.

I pay 70 bucks a month for T-Mobile which is comparable to ATT here (Phoenix area which is big for T-MO).
I get unlimited everything with no throttling. Last month I used about 10GB w/o a hiccup (I may have been going ROM crazy and bypassing all the WIFI restrictions on downloads since I was at work...lol). ROM - LOAD - TEST FOR 2 DAYS - WIPE - NEW ROM - LOAD - REPEAT

Well here in hawaii ill walk into a safeway grocery store and i wont have even signal for calls... i mean none. Make a call and nothing. I gave tmobile up for att. I get 35mb/s and reception almost everywhere. Here att wins

Yeah, I've been debating on moving to this plan since it rolled out. I currently have the unlimited data plan, 700 minutes to share between two phones with a rollover bank of about 7000 minutes since we rarely use more than a hundred combined, and unlimited texts and mms. I've been hesitant to switch because, while we are generally under 10 gigs, I sometimes get a little data crazy and we reach between 12-15 gigs combined. Do you know what they charge for overages per gig? Also, I assume that includes unlimited calls and texts? TIA for your reply

Overages is $15 a gb if you go over. If you let them know before you go over you can change your plan to higher data for $10 a gig more. Just go with the 10gb. That should be sufficient enough for 2 people. My wife and i have it we are on separate accounts. Just got it today and im happy that i dont have to worry about going over. Plus if you both are on the same contract you save a lot.
I just went from the 4gb plan on FAM share with 2 phones total. Went on the site to see what its about under my account and it showed my contract was 4gb for 150. It showed I could change to 10gb for 130. I definitely don't use near 10 unless I'm away from WiFi and still don't use near 10 but better to be on the safe side. I read all the fine print and hoopla and I saw nothing of extra charges or drawbacks. Took the 10gb and as I see so far a cheaper bill and more gigs. I see win win.

Aw, I looked to see if I could upgrade my data plan on my ancient non-existent plan and nope. Ah well.
Eventually one of the newer plans might make more sense, but every time I've done the math in the past, it turns out to be more expensive.
This is the mobile share value plan. If you're out of contract or you have your own phone, you get the 15 dollar pricing instead of 40. Its nothing special tbh

to me its worth it $130 phone bill for 10gb of data. and the data is crazy fast with att. ive measured a friends phone at work with speedtest and he hits 8mb/s on verizon,my old tmobile was at 7mb/s and with att ive hit 40mb/s. thats high speed data. ITS WORTH IT!!

I don't really feel sorry for those who use 100+ GB/month. Those are the users that prompted the removal of the unlimited plans to start with. You can scream "unlimited is unlimited" if you want but its Verizon's sandbox and they make the rules.

Agreed...there comes a point (about 100 GB a month) where it becomes an "unjust enrichment" for the end user....and this is why we cannot have nice things lol
I'm surprised Verizon didn't go the route of...well the unlimited data plan started in the days of 2G/3G only...so that's the only unlimited data you get...when you are on 2G/3G.

I live out in the boonies, I am on 1x and sometimes 3g. my internet is only dsl at 2.5Mbps (3g speeds) ... so whenever I hit 4g on my phone, I do everything with it. so i sometimes rack up 70gb+ a month. especially when im at work ..teamviewer, netflix, streaming cameras setup at various locations, music is always going, showbox, kodi (tends to use a lot more data than other streaming apps)... the data rack up quick.

I use it as primary internet. Been paying for it for so long. Screw paying $60+ a month for cable that is the same speed but doesn't offer the same capabilities that cellular data does. I rack up over 100gb a month but it's a business account so i doubt they will cut me off.
The fcc does nothing about the internet monopoly in my area because it's not considered a monopoly because wireless internet is considered an option. When verizon charges what they do for internet it clearly isn't an option. We all know verizon can afford to give you more GB's at a lower price.
Most of the infrastructure is already in place and they are paying purely for maintenance at this point. And when they are talking about faster speeds with xlte and lte-a they are expecting you to use more data but have no plans on reducing the cost per gb. Faster speeds means a larger resource pool to tap into. The excuse that heavy udp users are decreasing the speeds for others is basically a thing of the past at this point.
Honestly it's all bs marketing and political manipulation. Tell me why countries in the EU can offer unlimited lte data for 35 euoros a month, which people use as their primary internet source, if this isn't the case?

Maybe on average.. Some months around 500 and others 100. Feb 17th I say "GOOD<--->BYE" to VZW (they terminate unless I select a plan) after 10 f*$#ing years... not too sure what I'm going to do yet but obviously I cannot afford to stay with VZW..

Wait a second, I am currently experience a minor heart attack! They are CANCELING your UDP?!
I have not received a letter regarding this, is anyone else receiving this letter?

I average 12GB/month (which is NOT heavy use at all) and received my letter informing my UDP is being terminated as of Feb 16. I have complained to both of my local stores and the customer service call center to no avail. I was told that once the letter was sent my fate was sealed.

I read online last night T-Mobile has been gaining twice as many new customers as Verizon since Verizon's been pulling their $*it.

They will regret it, T-Mobiles service, at least here is so spotty its not even worth paying for. When my wife had it she had to use my wifi tethering just to use her phone half the time we went anywhere.
200gb a month is plenty, but the problem is the price of the new plans they want you on. Id never pay those rediculous prices.
But unlimited should be unlimited, i understand that too, but 500gb people... Come on now, that is a little excessive. I don't even come close to that downloading movies all day on my home cable network. So i can see where verizon is coming from. Fair usage.
I am sticking with my Verizon UDP for now, but i have also bought my wife a new phone on at&t's DirecTV unlimited plan that's up to 4 devices just incase verizon pulls out more bs. Figured id jump on that and get grandfathered on that also, since in my area at&t is second best if not identical to Verizon's coverage.
Sprint and T-Mobile are out if the question for me, been there done that.

I agree with you on that one, 200GB/month is a bit excessive and almost abusive to the network load. But for those of us that use 12GB and end up getting our plans yanked from us is insulting. I know I purposefully sought out wifi wherever I could to keep unnecessary use of network resources to a minimum. This is the thanks I was given for my consideration.
To say I feel insulted is putting it lightly.

Oh I feel insulted for you as well. 12GB is not that bad at all. I average 45gb and have not received a letter yet. This whole ordeal is ridiculous. I would rather they implement a cap on the unlimited, like say 100GB or even 40GB and then slow us way down instead of just straight up removing us.
