[GUIDE] Format your WP7 encrypted SD CARD - Easy Way - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Development

**************

which ROM you used?

On this method and without MAGLDR is formatted - a facility of the formatting from Windows.
This facility - after WP7, but not after blocking SD-cards.

does this work if the SD card was fully looked like in the Xboxmod/Yuki ROM?

I tried with HD2O, Pdaimatejam, cotulla's, XBMOD rom. and the result was almost the same.

Yes it does. I tried with my 8 GB Samsung Class 4 Micro SD Card. Everytime I tried it worked. Let me know how it goes on your end...

ok,lets be clear on this because there is a lot of confusion over whats locked and what isnt.
a locked card if plugged in to a windows PC will displaying NOTHING in My computer, there will be an device in device manager tho, it is not possible to even see the card in most (all i am aware of) formatting programs including SDformatter
a card thats unlocked (but unusable) can be seen and edited in admin tools> computer management, you can format it in anything, all thats happened is that the filesystem info is unknown, windows is great for doing this itsself without the need of any further programs.
So to be clear, your saying that doing this will wipe the secure partition on the SD card there by wiping the key and deleting the encryption covering the whole device?
all the ROMs bar xbmods do not use a locked SD card so that can be fixed in windows, xbmods ROM can be unlocked but by default it is locked, this is the one that catches people out. If folk would actually read up on what they are doing they would know that you should unlock the SD card BEFORE flashing a new ROM if you previously had xbmods rom, if you forget to do that then simply flash the xbmod ROM back on to it and unlock it next time.
Its really very simple
ive just read your post again and your cards are not locked, plugging a Locked SD card in to a card read will give you absolutely no access to it at all other than being able to see it in device manager, whatever it is your doing, your card isnt locked, sorry.

When you clear the MBR on the SD via MAGLDR then it just destroys Table of partitions thus gives you the disk in the RAW format. Which you can format in WindowS. I have tried this method with XbMod rom without unlocking the card in the ROM.
PS: The key here is that, you have to clear the SD MBR(Master Boot Record) via MAGLDR prior to inserting the card in the PC. (Either by using the MASS STG method or the via CARD READER). Hope this clarifies the doubt...

The time and effort you put into your guide is admirable and appreciated, but unfortunately, dazza9075 is correct about the locked cards.
This thread still is the best for those who do not want to reinstall the Back the Future ROM to unlock their SD cards, if one can find a Nokia phone or other listed device near at hand.
There are rumors the new MAGDLR under development for our Leo phones will include a utility to unlock these locked cards. Hopefully this is not wishful dreaming.

I tried my method in the XBMOD Rom after fully testing it I posted here. But anyways I will do it one more time when I reach home and then confirm it back. I did have two cards locked by xbmod rom and this procedure worked out for them. But for the confirmation sake I will do it one more time tonight and will post back the results...

OOps sorry dude .. i shud have tried to be poilitically correct and polite but since i was in hurry i just wrote one line in fact i agree ..and apologize i should have PMed you.. but anyhow to add to detail ::
If u have a card thats been encrypted and then u try to unlock it won't be detected by most of devices .. it once worked for me on a Nokia phone .. So check if that works .. also if u are using storage unlock from XBMod then thats ok.. Lets take a Case where someone is running Android from SD and has 2 cards one for WP7 too.. now he/she swaps the card to Android but as a mistake chooses to boot into WP7 .. trust me the card is gone ....Some Nokia phones and some other devices can rescue it otherwise its gone ...
Regards

Anybody try this yet? ezSD Ghost Clip.

Its not the mbr that holds the secure area, deleting it makes no difference, a locked card is designed to not be viewable at all in a device its a special protected area often used for cache on higher class cards when used correctly it makes the card unreadable, Nokia phones are able to erase that area which turns off the secured feature which then lets devices access the cards storage space, however the contents of the storage area are still encrypted and as you have removed the secure area its completely unusable =)

As always, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I do have one quick question, once a locked card is formatted by a device such as a Nokia phone, is it possible to format the card again with a program such as SDFormatter to regain the storage capacity? That is what I understand, but never have tried. Of course, any formatting would remove the contents that would therefor be unusable.

Take out SD card when flashing? sim?

I forget where i saw it posted, but do people feel it makes any difference whether you flash a ROM with the sd card in, or the sim?
i tried flashing with all combinations and they all worked. But just to be on the safe side I try to remember to take both out when flashing.
my first few flashes i removed SIM and SD card, then i got lazy and just started flashing with them in. I've probably flashed 15 or more times with them both in and haven't run into any problems.

Same here lol
never took out either. nothing has ever happened.
I used to take them both out for every single flash.
Now I just take the SD card out so TomTom wont start installing if I left files on there by accident.
(also while I flash I clear out all the crap and pile of CABs I build up on there through a card reader)
SIM card stays in to autodetect if the rom wasnt optimized for ATT.

try using the forum's wonderful search function
Maybe its due to other models of phones that might format sd cards, memory cards or other storage mediums when being flashed. But seems here its all good for the Raph for now
I recall reading somewhere here that the only reason for removing sim was to prevent incoming calls from interrupting the flash process. Only reason to remove sd card was to prevent unwanted software installation.
No i BELEIVE DUE TO THE EARLY STAGES OF SPL MODIFICATION IN PREVIOUS PHONES SUCH AS THE HERMES, IN MY CASE THE 8125. tHIS WAS THE PROCEDURE WHEN FLASHING BACK IN THE DAY. This has not been the case for quite some time. sorry for caps but dont feel like editing on my phone.

With the UC (User Customization) support in ROMs now you need the SD card as it contains the customizations. I've flashed my phone more times than I can count and I have never removed either the sim or sd card.
I have NEVER removed sd or SIM whilst flashing, you literally CANNOT get interrupted during a flash process as your device is in SPL mode.
Leave them in, dont worry it will be fine.
There's at least one possible issue that you could run into flashing with an SD card in the slot, you might be booted up into winmo, start the flashing process, but have RAPHIMG.NBH or RAPHDIAG.NBH on your sd card, and the bootloader will stick there giving you a prompt to flash/boot that or continue..
that's stopped me in my tracks once or twice because I started flashing and didn't notice the prompt, so it didn't go anywhere and i had to start over.. but just a minor inconvenience

[Q] Can I use my SDcard after Goldcard?

hello fellow hackers. Today i hacked my HD2 to install Android using a goldcard. Everything went well. No i have the problem that neither my Milstone, nor my HD2 or legend recognize the card. I have formated it a couple of times but no chance. I can use it on windows, and read and write but the cell phones doesnt recognize it. Is my SD card now corrupt? How can i remove the changes that were made?

Dude, why do you want to format it?
If I were you, I would rather buy a new one and keep the old one as an emergency kit
Still, you can try format it using a Partition Tools software.
Good luck
you shouldnt have needed to format it. it should work as a normal sd card when its gold, no problem. how else do you think you managed to copy the leoimg.nbh file onto it?
A card should work as a FAT disk, and still remain gold, until it is formatted (or you accidentally allow that annoying windows 'your disk may have errors' or whatever the hell it says popup to 'fix' it.)
Since you have gone past that stage by now, id say fix the mbr, fresh partition. Give some partitioning software a try, or you can use THIS (post 3) method to clean the mbr, see if it helps.

Possible and Simple SD problem Fix for WP7 builds

So i tried to install Mango builds on my HD2 after a long ago. Missed WP7!
I installed 3 different Mango builds but all of them said that my SD card is damaged and can not continue.[Kingston 16gb class 4]
Not even some Android builds worked..stuck at boot. [Never had any problem before]
A Format didn't work either with SDFormatter nor Partition programs e.t.c. And i do not have a Nokia phone to unlock the card or something.
The thing is that my card was formatted with 32 clusters, so i went and deleted the whole partition from partition magic and reformatted the card with SDFormatter, automatically it went to 32 clusters again. I went to windows format and selected the default settings on the card [cluster 8000b something] and now everything is working and i can enjoy Mango builds on my phone! WTH?
I also checked some other cards [verbatim, sandisk class 2 and 4] and formatted them the same way and again they are working properly.
I hope his simple fix will help others also and hope i am not mistaken!
Crazy huh?
Sounds interesting, i'll try it with my sandisk 8gb class4, when i'll be back at home. It was behaving like a corrupted after reboot in WP7, even i have tried different roms.

unlock card first with unlock cab + yuki ROM or with old Nokia phone
yeah i noticed this on some marginal cards of mine, didnt effect the speed rating at all but there was some improvment in stability, i wouldnt say its perfect tho, there still some reboots/
top tip, DO NOT move the clusters size to 4K!
well an trully buggered one card up by mistake doing that!
Cluster size doesnt seem to matter. My kingston 32gb class 4 card still isn't recognised (never has been actually). Works fine on android and windows 7
But how can i use my SD cards that never worked with Mango builds? lol

I'm not going to say IMPOSSIBLE! , but it does not make sense.
The first thing you do while installing WP7, is clear the MBR. If the MBR is gone, so are all partitions and their defined cluster size.
There's something else to it...

I totally agree! I had card issues when moving from the HD2 Yuki ROM to others in this forum, and three different cards weren't recognised.
It wasn't that the cards were faulty or damaged at all. I managed to reformat them on my pc after installing the Yuki ROM and using the lock cab to unlock them.

thats a good point, even if you dont clear the MBR manually in MAGLDR the installer does wipe all partitions, which would clear the partition tables and associated cluster size

Still... formating with a X cluster size, might create a 1/0 pattern either at the card begging in case of a quick format, or through the whole card in case of a full format, that WP7 prefers.
I've never had this issue, so i cannot comment.

Encrypted SD card and TWRP recovery dont mix well

because of this my SD card cant mount in recovery for me to perform a backup. is there a work around? or once its encrypted u have to undo it to access the SD card in recovery...
This is most likely going to sound rude but that's the point. I don't know what good it would do to be encrypted if you could still just plug it in and read it
If the other card isn't encrypted just switch mount points and back up to the other card

well with encrypted if someone steals my phone, they still have to be able to unlock it to click it over to Disk Drive. also if they pull it out of my phone its unreadable by a computer. so if i lose my phone the information is guaranteed to be destroyed. and as for switching to different mount points, i tried that. i clicked internal storage, and it still said could not mount storage. im decrypting right now, so i can make my nandroid, but i really wish i could keep it encrypted
it says that the phone uses a password built in somewhere to access the information. is there anyway we can set the password and then use it in recovery to access the card? or does this depend on the card and not the software.
Sorry I just reread my post and it looks like I'm saying that I'm trying to be rude lol I meant that's the point of encrypting the card lol. It wouldn't be worth encrypting if you could just open it in twrp. There are apps on the market that will encrypt just the external card and not both but I haven't tried it. I don't see the point of encrypting it when I can just lock folders. My phone is setup to wipe the card if the phone is ever lost so I'm not worried about encryption

very true, idk i guess i should carry a backup micro to backup and flash my roms. unless can the card be partitioned so part is encrypted and part is not?
I've never tried it, perhaps, I know a partition can be locked and encrypted leaving other partition(s) alone but I don't know if there are any apps that support it

[Q] Cannot Mount Internal or External SD Card in 4ext

Hi Guys,
Before I tear my hair out going through all efforts to recover my phone back to a working condition, I'd like to know the odds of this being a hardware malfunction. I was running ARHD 4.0 and it has all but bricked my phone (beware, stick with NRG's rom if you want a stable Sense daily driver). After going through tons of force-closes and permissions issues, the phone became incapable of reading the external SD. Now I don't know if this is due to corruption or an actual hardware issue (I "dropped" the phone once while it was acting up, though I was still able to access my ext-sd after that IIRC). Hopefully someone can give me some guidance here, I'm a little wary of the fact that my phone cannot see the external SD card even from 4ext at this point in time.
I've completely wiped the phone as much as I can via 4ext, I suppose the next step would be to insert a different SD card or see if I can't get another device to read this one so that I can format it to fat-32 and start fresh, but as it stands I cannot currently get 4ext to see my external sd (or internal for that matter). Also, when first entering the bootloader, I don't see the scrolling lines of "ph85img.xxx not found" which to me would be indicative that seeing seeing my external SD card either, and thus not seeking for a recovery image.
Assuming that I am unable to get the phone to mount a working Fat-32 formatted external SD, would this necessarily indicate a hardware failure, or are there other potential culprits? Thanks for any help on this guys.
I had this problem too I fixed it by taking out the battery for about 5minutes exactly. This let's all sensors clear out and somewhat gives your phone a fresh start...tell me...does hboot (white screen that says unlocked s-on ect)...does it scan for the ph9857xx.IMG or zip? If it does than your phone still recognizes external storage sd card...if you can load a Rom to you ext sd card then you may be able to flash a new Rom from your ext sd card...use nrg Rom or super sense...hop I helped you..
