[Q] texting app crapware - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi,
Please tell me how to get rid of the god-awful slow texting app that comes with this phone, and replace it with the stock android texting app.
Thanks!

Are you referring to the AT&T messages app? 'Cause the SMS app that comes stock works fine for me :/

Stock messages app works fine for me. If you have root you may be able to find differnt message apps, but my first suggestion is to give handcent a try as it is my go to sms app for when I'm having issues with cusom ROMs being buggy with mms. Its got a threaded look to it, much like iphone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDIxMiwiY29tLmhhbmRjZW50Lm5leHRzbXMiXQ..
It also has font packs and other stuff on the app store.

I far prefer GO SMS Pro, love the interface and features, but with all the third-party SMS apps I have an issue of double and triple texts being sent to people. I agree the Samsung SMS app is painfully slow. I hate using it, but it's my only choice because it doesn't send out duplicate texts. :/

Thats very odd, I've never got complaint of this. Have you googled the issue to see if there is a known solution or work around? As common as these apps are you can't possibly be the only one misfortunate enough to experience this. I have had issues in the past getting numerous notifications despite turning native notifications off for SMS, but thats an entirely different issue.

How do i replace the Samsung message app with the vanilla android one? The Samsung one is slow and is a failed attempt at copying iphone. The keyboard even blocks the send button!

Google is your friend to find an mms.apk. you need to be rooted. And have root explorer and a little knowledge

what i did was use LauncherPro Plus and GoSMS.... i used handscent but prefer go... you can change the launcher icons and apps in the lower row with launcherpro.

Mostly I see people on ICS complaining about this issue, but there are several people on GB complaining about it as well, for both GO SMS and Handcent and a few others on Google Play.
I had the duplicate notification issue with Handcent - even though I had disabled notifications for the stock app AND frozen it. Didn't have that problem with GO SMS. Had an odd problem when I tried Chomp SMS, where all incoming messages were anonymous and upon trying to view them, the message couldn't be found. That even happened in the stock app, so long as I had Chomp installed. Uninstalling fixed that issue immediately.
But so far as I can tell, some people just have the problem, and most don't. I have yet to see a reply from any of the devs about the issue. I've tried completely resetting the phone to factory spec but I still got the duplicate message issue.
I really, REALLY want to use GO SMS. Although something else I noticed is that some people's messages were being sent to the wrong contacts... Perhaps I'll try the vanilla Android apk...

How do you try the vanilla android apk?

This is the ics messenger app, you can try it without needing root.

Thanks but I don't really want a third party version with ads. I don't get it...isn't there a plain messaging app that comes with android (like what was on the nexus one), or is it proprietary to every device? It seems like this shouldn't be such a difficult thing to install instead of the crappy samsung one. Am I missing something?

i'm surprised. the sms app is not bad i'm the note. I've seen worse. (though i am using the rogers version)

I'm coming from a rooted Inspire 4G (cyanogen) and I've noticed that the texting on the Samsung Messaging app is a bit sluggish. And some keys don't respond to my fast fingers.. Yet the app itself runs very fast (ie open app, open threads, go back, etc).
One thing I did was uninstall Swype through Titanium and I think I've noticed a difference in the keyboard speed. It may just be my imagination though

I'm using go SMS, no issues..as long as I leave stock installed and not frozen..if I do..no mms messages

How to switch off SMS delivery notification sound?

Is there a way to turn off the SMS delivery notification sound but keep the SMS received notification sound?
Not sure on the stock app, on handcent all the sounds/notifications can be modified or removed.
I use SMS Go Pro and it allows you to turn off SMS delivery notifications. That's the beauty of Android. Don't like the SMS app? Get a different one!

I too want to know this. Perhaps its possible to edit the code for the app itself just like the camera app has been modified?
Yeah, it can be tough on some of the stock android software since development minded folks seldom want to mess with something that already has multiple fully fleshed out apps to replace it. I kinda like touch wiz once its dewizified but there is almost nothing out there that you can add on to it or use to modify it. I did think of one thing though, they added some new setting adjustments into the messaging app in CM7. You might want to consider grabbing that and seeing if it brings this to the table. I cant recall all the changes in it as I didn't use it. That would be kinda stock messaging.
*BUMP*
Has anyone come up with a solution to this, or are we forced to use another app for SMS? I really like the stock app, but are very annoyed by the fact that I cannot change this sound or remove it.
My problem is completely the opposite, I am trying to turn the notification on with no luck.
neither sms go pro or stock are responding, ticked all boxes i.e. sounds, sms options...etc with no luck.
any ideas...running ics 4.0.4 on sg3

Messaging BIG Problem (Ridiculous)

Hi, This is my first post and i need help, I was texting with my new phone (SGS3) in the stock messaging app, and i wrote an SMS (4 Pages) and suddenly the SMS was automatically converted to MMS, and there is no option to disable this horrible and ridiculous feature, and theres also no option to turn it off! So how can this be possible? Such an expenssive phone, and you cant even write freely an SMS??? Why is there a limit of 3 pages? I was wondering if someone could do a MOD to fix this! I had the same problem with the galaxy note, and there was a little mod that could fix that, so i think im not the only one that want this fixed! (i dont like custom ROMS or anything like that, and i dont like apps like GoSMS, or stuff like that, i just like the stock messaging app, but with the fix) i just want PLEASE a little mod to fix this BIG problem. (Sorry for my english)
Sms are limited to 160 characters. Otherwise it has to be sent as an Mms.

Thats not what i asked for, i mean.. im coming from an iphone 4s and that never happened, in fact it never happened to me in all the phones i have had!! So, i dont see the point of converting an SMS automatically to MMS just because i write more than 3 pages, thats just ridiculous But the thing is, that i would like to know if someone could do a MOD for the stock messaging app to fix that and make it without characters restrictions! To explain it better this is what i want for my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371755
no one texts anymore, use whatsapp or some sort of instant messaging

i'm pretty sure that's not how it works, SMS longer than 160 characters get sent as multiple SMS which then then recombined back into one sms on the recipients phone. I've had the issue before when one part of a multi SMS message was delayed causing me to have the first or second half only and when the other one arrived sometime later the phone still knew to combined them together.
MMS is only when you attach a picture, video or voice clip to the message.
I have just tested what the OP has said and its true, if you type a long SMS, after the 3rd set of 260 characters, (there is a counter just above the send icon) it then gets converted to a MMS
But to the OP, I do wonder why you would want to type such a long SMS on a regular basis? you can also just send the sms at 3 pages then send a new one.
Can't you just send after every two pages. Yeah, it cost more but it will solve your issue.

Sms are limited to 160 characters (Per Page), And when you write more than 3 Pages, it will automatically convert your SMS to MMS without asking or option to disable, it will just convert it to MMS. (it will convert it even if you dont attach ANYTHING, Even if it just based on text)
Use Go sms... But this is stupid...
S3 shouldn't do that...
Lol at the Wattsapp suggestions

Wow I just realised that there is no option to cancel this 'feature' after I read your thread.
I do hope this is resolved since for those on Payandgo networks, like me, MMS isn't always free whereas practically even mobile plan has free SMS. Defeats the objective here, you can send very long SMS texts (counts as more than 1 but still sends fine) from other phones no problem. On the galaxy nexus it was possible to disable this SMStoMMS converting problem easily, I hope the devs come up with a workaround..

Who still has data rates for SMS and MMS? I thought this stuff was free now? In Australia SMS for free is pretty much standard and most plans have at least $500 of credit included, an MMS costs max 0.50c, is this seriously an issue? Just use a different messegeing ap or use an instant messenger.

Guys, am I right in saying that this was always a problem with stock messaging app? Hence most custom ROMs have a modded 'No MMS convert' message app? I remember this limitation on my stock SGS2 back in the day - dont remember this ever happening to me after custom roms.... or maybe I never sent over 3 pages.......
I just tried Texting over 311 characters from my SGS2 to my SGS3 and them back..........No MMS converting.... One whole page too....
Therefore this is not a problem with custom ROMs...

Your Preferred SMS App?

i'm not a fan of handcent and looking to move on from GO. The stock HTC just doesn't do it for me either. Any others I should be checking out?
thanks!
Other than the ones you've mentioned, Chomp is decent. It's not the prettiest, but it's pretty quick and functional.

Better handling of large message counts, pop-up reply/compose windows, more customization features, etc. The pop-up windows are the biggest things for me...you can send, receive, and reply to messages without leaving the app you're in.

Oh, I like that... which one do you use?
I use gosms. I absolutely love it. It's way better than handcent. It has everything handcent does (emoji, pop ups, customization) and more like:
A very clean ui
Option for different running modes(i use lite mode. It has no addons and runs fast)
Emoji. I can't stress it enough. It has better encoding. On handcent my iphone friends had problems viewing it but on gosms it works great.
Private box. A locked in box where you can receive messages without people seeing them. I have all the conversations I have with girls in there.
Group chat. No need to download 15 addons or pay like handcent. All you have to do is go to send settings and turn on "mms group chat". Works flawlessly.
All around gosms is so much better. Don't bother with handcent or chomp.
Used to use Handcent then switched to GoSMS. Been using GoSMS for quite a while now.
seems like i might be sticking with GO. I don't dis-like it, but it seems even the "lite" mode is becoming bloated. I like the stock htc app except when downloading group messages or attachments it takes forever, unlike GO which would show up immediately.
Be weary of GO products. I noticed a while ago (when I stopped using them) that they seem to use a lot of data ... I wonder what they could be doing... And what data they gather... Anyway just sayin
I stick with stock aosp on cm9. I'm normally a go sms fan for all it's features but I hate how it's always running while aosp isn't. I personally think go devs implemented unnecessary services into it.

The stock version from the Ville C Sense 4.0 base.
Specifically, Nils' Business ICS 4.0...
Yea, I just use the stock messaging app. I also use SMS Popup to get the popup window with the quick reply, delete, etc. And if you really want emoji there are ways to get emoji in android with special font files. I dont care about them so its no big deal.
I'd rather have an SMS app that's not running nonstop since SMS apps with emojis have excessive services and such running. waste of battery when you aren't using it. even if go SMS is configured to not run persistently there's still unwanted crap running

Well you obvious don't know what your talking about because the reason why mine runs nonstop is to receive messages. If you uninstall stock message(which btw runs all the time ) you need to make sure gosms is the one receiving messages. Also it doesn't waste battery its like a 5mb process that runs in the background. There's no unwanted crap...

Alternative to stock messenger?

I find the stock messaging app to be abysmal to say the least. Ridiculously corny background wall papers, an input box that unnecessarily consumes a large majority of the screen, and a change in orientation defaults you back to the beginning of your thread.
Is there anything else available? I dabbled with GoSMS temporarily, but uninstalled it when I started noticing odd behavior to accompany large amounts of spam. I also tried the 4.4 Hangouts and enabled the SMS functionality. Loved it, but experienced issues receiving messages (both SMS and Hangouts) and was constantly clearing cache to resolve. Perhaps installing the stock JB messenger? But in doing so I would like to disable to stock messenger since with GoSMS I would receive double notifications from MMS.
Thoughts?
Textra us the best.
I hate the stock message too, very cartoony. But I've still kept it as default because of the non blocking popup which comes in top corner. All other apps which have the popup features, makes them come on the screen and you can continue till you interact with them.

There are things I really don't like about the look of the stock messaging app, but I really love the unobtrusive popup in the corner when you receive a message. If I were just able to customize it more, it would be a total winner. I would prefer a black theme and the ability to totally change the bubble settings rather than choose from 5 presets that all look terrible.
Not to give big red too much credit, but they make a pretty decent messenger app...
Sliding Messaging.
Very clean and very customizable, though it lags a bit here and there on my DNA. Probably better on the G2, but still my favorite!
You do realize today you can change the background to any picture including a different one for each contact. You can also change the text bubbles.

Yes. Of course, but also, the text bubbles are very limited on the D800. Not sure if the Verizon one has more customization, but the AT&T one has maybe 8 presets. Of course you can change the background on each one, but it still doesn't solve the popup being white and the bubbles being very limited in customization.
When you look at your people in the stock messaging app you can't change that to dark which is my only issue with it for the most part. I just wish all apps had a inverted option. Better on your eyes and battery life.

Favorite messaging app?

Wondering what messaging apps all of you are using.. and if you have any recommendations.
I absolutely love the stock app aside from two major faults: disappearing keyboard/lockup on each sent message, and no quick reply in notification drawer. But I really love the look and layout of it otherwise.
I've tried basically every other messaging app and didn't quite love any of them. GoSMS and Textra I like.. but don't really like how they handle notifications. I wish textra had a regular quick reply option.
Then I tried a few of the AOSP ones, which seem to have all the features down, but they're just plain ugly. Idk what it is.. they're just very big and clunky looking.
Any suggestions? Can't seem to find a simple and elegant one that also has the features down. I might give textra another shot and see if I can't come around to liking their notification system.
Chomp, GoSMS & Handcent are all great options. (I'm currently using Go)
tap'n on my S5
I used Handcent in my Evo 4g LTE. I like it better than all the other ones I tried after modifying the style to suite my needs. But the stock HTC message app on this ATT One works great for me. At this time I am running more stock than ever before. I have not even bothered to root since I ran the 4.4.3 RUU since everything works so well already...

I haven't had any such issue (disappearing keyboard/lockup) on the stock Messaging app, and quite happy with it. Although I've never really liked or used "quick reply" type features.
In the past when I didn't like the stock app, I used Chomp SMS. Chomp is very customizable (you can make it look practically however you want) and has quick reply (although this appears as a popup, not in the notification drawer).
I prefer Textra, but I had a problem with it failing to send after a while, so I ended up going back to stock. There is another thread around here where the same issue was noted in Chomp as well, so it seems that it may be an issue with the OS itself.
