[Q] Connect Xperia S to ps3 via WiFi? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

hi, my Xperia S is shipping to me and i’m wondering if i will able to connect it somehow to my ps3 to stream content to my HD tv without using the HDMI cable!
since i saw that there are only unofficial docks (and they can't connect simultaneously HDMI and USB) and i will use on of them to dock my phone near my bad, maybe it is possible to connect the phone to the ps3 via WiFi and then use all the functions on the tv like it was connected via HDMI, only using the ps3 "in the middle" and using the ps3 controller like remote.
In this way the controller would be used to play games too without rooting the phone like i saw here in the forums.
Am i only dreaming or you think it could be done and useful?
Thanks!

This is in no way possible. USB2.0 isnt fast enough to run video signals, never mind 802.11a/b/g/n(Wifi).

sorry but
my USB 2.0 (slow) external HD wich is a WD MyPassport is connected to my HD TV via USB 2.0 cable and i watch movies through it without any problem!
and i stream from my mac to my ps3 via wi-fi! (I can use "Playback" or "Ps3 Media Server"), sometime it lags a little bit but most of the time it works very well!
So i didn’t understand your answer, or i’m sorry but you are wrong mate! maybe you are speaking about full HD content... but i think that no-hd games and all the other stuff would work!

Dont contradict if you dont know what you're talking about.
Your USB2.0 connection to your HDD is transmitting DATA to the TV. The tv generates the actual video signal then displays it. Same way you stick a usb key in your PS3, the video signal goes over HDMI.
Its not possible.

USB 2.0's data rate (480Mbps) is faster than WiFi 802.11 a (54 Mbps) /b (11 Mbps) /g (54Mbps). n from 108Mbps upto 600Mbps.

ok now i understood, i asked two times "sorry" contradicting you so i think i didn’t committed treason!
Thanks for the explanation
so the streaming from Mac to Ps3 works in the same way, the mac transforms the content into data, send it, and then the Ps3 read that data and re-generate content sending it to the TV via HDMI.
So probably the Xperia S could send data instead of video signal to the Ps3 via Wi-Fi but the process of converting content to data - "inside" the phone - would take too much time and it would not be "real time"

USB2.0 can not and will never support 720p. Its just too slow. Its for that reason that apple have developed thunderbolt.

I don't know if you could use the phone as a DLNA server and the PS3 as a DLNA client for this (sort of like Apple AirPlay).
But I don't have an Xperia S to test this theory out with, so...
(I know my reciever can be streamed to using DLNA [from Android, WP7, and WMP] and AirPlay [Apple]).

From SONYmobile website: "The Exmor R™ for mobile camera sensor lightens up any gloomy day. Then share your pictures on a big screen. A single swipe of the display, and you can enjoy them on your tablet, TV or laptop via DLNA."
So the phone is capable to do this.
And PS3 of course can receive DLNA from a server.
Unfortunately i’m not a developer and this post was for knowledge and to give an idea to developers, since maybe an app that makes this (and other) phone(s) a media server would be interesting!

It's funny that you said that, considering people have been stream video/music over their 3G connection, which is way slower than USB2.0 or wifi. And I believe many people also watch 1080 video from youtube over their 3G too!
I think it's quite possible, considering PS3 can read files on PC over lan as media server, maybe we need an app to make XS acts as a media server? Just a suggestion.

Have you tried this: http://www.prosyst.com/media/MediaServer/MediaServer-Docu.html
I am not at home to test it on my PS3 but it looks like it should do the job

yes i think that it will work, and there are other 2 or 3 similar apps. The thing that would be very cool would be to develop an app, starting from apps like these, that emulate the behavior that the phone and device have when connected via HDMI. With the phone like control surface too. Maybe this is impossibile

Again, these are DATA streams, not video. The 3G connection is "transferring a file" per say, not 1280x720 pixels every 50th or 60th of a second(with a few ms delay btw, while 3g connections get around 75ms+ ping).

DNLA is a great protocol and there are many apps the both host and client, but this isnt what the OP was talking about.
You could use some form of RDP(Remote desktop) but performance sucks such cases, and I presume you'd have to hack your PS3 to put a client on it.

Hello,
Has anyone tried to connect x10 with tv? Should it be connected via usb or 3,5mm jack? Maybe there is some some app needed?
THX for answear.
I suggest you read your owners manual, especially the section covering features of the X10.
Hook up a camcorder directly to the tv, and point it at whatever is playing on your x10
LOL very funny but we prefer hd and not recorded crap
You will have to wait for the DLNA support that is coming to the X10.

Of course, you will need a DLNA compliant TV/Receiver... You can probably hook up as an external drive to a USB media player, but I haven't tried it...
Again, of course you'll need all of these to be HD capable in order to get HD...
Now, while the 3.5mm audio jack question seemed a bit silly, chek here: http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/samsung-galaxy-s-video-out-through-audio-port - so I guess, theoretically it is possible...

Actually, there will be set top boxes for DLNA. HTC announce one today. It is something that I believe will work on the XBox 360 as well.
Yes, but HTC has also an hardware chip for DLNA support.
I connected it once using my brother's n900's cable. it only gave me audio on the tv

I don't think so. (for example you don't need to have special hardware chip on PC to make it DLNA compatible player, server or controler)
the video out is different .. there is hardware support needed
does tv out really need hardware support?
i was thinking about capturing screen, and then translate the signal to something you can send over usb (usb to a/v cable) to your tv ... but i lack knowledge in dealing with hardware at programming ...

Android Tablet as PS3 Monitor?

Ok guys, I have done some hunting on the internet for a way to use my Android Tablet as a display for my PS3.
Now I am sure some of you are thinking "That's an effing great idea blorenzo, you are so awesome and wise" while others are thinking "why do you want to do that?"
To put it simply, for example say I am playing PS3 in my room (where my PS3 is located) but feel the sudden urge to defecate (take a ****) I can bring my Tablet into the bathroom with me, prop it on something and keep playing. (This is literally the event that gave me this idea)
On top of that say I want to play PS3 in the living room but am not in the mood to bring the entire unit downstairs, I can bring down my Tablet and plug it into the TV and boom! Or better yet say my girl wants me to watch a TV show with her that I am not into (Jersey Shore) then I can bring down my tablet and a PS3 controller (bluetooth reaches for me) and pretend I'm browsing the internet while I am really playing Killzone online.
You see in that situation it is a win/win, she thinks I'm spending time with her and I am actually having a blast killing people. I am sure there are many more uses for such an application and I could list them endlessly.
If it exists already someone point me in that direction if it doesn't... I think someone has ALOT of work ahead of them.
That's really a lot of work. Would the ps3 have built in drivers to transmit image through bluetooth? I think no, you'd need a modded ps3.

The WiiU plans on doing it...
Brothers if history has taught us anything its, when there is a will there is a way!
Lets think about this... (I'm not trying to be sarcastic or rude in anyway, I was simply asking these questions out loud to myself)
Are there Android Tablets that Support USB connections? Yes.
Is it possible to receive a video stream via USB? Yes.
So would it theoretically be possible utilizing some sort of USB Dongle? Or HDMI to USB Dongle?
reverse engineer the psp play functionality, does exactly this, right?

Ya that's what I was thinking, I remember checking out my PS3 stuff through my PSP (Checking messages and stuff) on any wifi network, but it was pretty slow and limited, no games or really anything other than the web browser and messsage box. Maybe there will be something better with the PS Vita.

this guy here seem to have done what you want http://ps3maven.com/portable-ps3-mod/ and to everybody who said it cant be done in your face
to do this with an android tablet you would need two things:
1. you would need a wireless HDMI bridge (they're expensive, but something like this: http://goo.gl/z53fL)
2. You would need someone to make a mod/app for the tablet to convert HDMI out port into an HDMI in port. This would be done in either via an app or a mod to the actual kernel and how it uses the HDMI port. AFAIK most android tablets have an Mini HDMI port on them.
Doing these two things would give you wireless signal to your tablet anywhere that is within range of the HDMI bridge.
Nice, thanks for the reply's guys and now we know for a fact that its not impossible. If we only had a Dev who could see that this would be an awesome application for a tablet and come up with a way to achieve it.
Or Sony could just release this app officially, I would gladly pay for it.
I guess I will continue to dream...
I think HDMI in for a android tablet would be sweet! Think of taking car trips with a xbox or ps3. Or any of the many other devices you could plug in!

i have limited background in this, but was looking for the same thing. and everyone is saying it is not possible. Bluetooth is entirely plausible... plus the bandwith is **** so the image would either look good, but have about 2 frames a minute, or look like **** and be mostly playable. however, the PSP and PS Vita can do something similar over the network. if someone can rip the "Remote Play" bit out of a vita, and toss it in some sort of emulator, it might work. but the PS3 controller would likely have to be connected to the tablet.
Tablet PS3 monitor - The easy way!
Really...
If you have a PC with a video in PCI card (maybe if you don't mind the bad quality you could use a webcam even) plug your audio, and video from your PS3 to your computer. Use VLC to stream the incoming video and audio over your LAN in a format that your tablet can play. Play the stream via the media player on your tablet. Done.
Your welcome.

I was actually thinking of a device that did the same thing (PS3 or other video source to tablet). Have you found any products like this out there yet?
I understand what AmnzeroCorrosion is saying as to how that path may work, but I think this glosses over some technical challenges. Using most video capture cards will introduce latency b/c most video capture cards encode to MPEG. While being very efficient in bandwidth usage, MPEG uses interframe comrpession so it takes a couple frames of video being input before the first frame can be sent over the network. Couple that with network delays and the latency only increases. I wouldnt see it taking much before the latency of the setup would make it unbearable for fast twitch games.
I would be extremely interested to know if this has been tackled already.
Idisplay might work
I was googling on it and found Idisplay application. Not sure if anyone tried on it, but i am planning to use it for my PS3 and LG 3D Android mobile.
If already anyone use then welcome to share experience.

How about Allshare Cast? It's a HDMI dongle for your television wich can wirelessly mirror your phone on the screen. So you can keep the phone in your hands/pocket while watching =)
It's not too cheap though with ~90$.
There are other clients for remote viewing, including homebrew-stuff based on the Raspberry Pi micro-computer.

Ive seen those, they are all very limited! If we choose wlan screen share, the samsung own solution is the best one atm.
Afaik it uses Wifi direct, so no worries for overloading your router. That would mean you sacrifice wifi connectivity though.

Most portable Android stick that can handle local 1080p

I've looked at what's out there, although the sticks themselves look really small it appears that most of them need (obviously) external power as well as some kind of remote which I'm guessing would be bulky. Is there anything that can be controlled without a keyboard/mouse? Can it be controlled with another Android device?
Unlike most people, who seem to want to use the devices at home for Netflix/cordcutting purposes, I actually want one I could keep in my bag with some kind of storage (SD or USB) full of movies so I could watch them wherever I've got an HDMI screen.
Portability is important, but so is playback of local files. I care less about streaming. Ideally the device would support playing everything up to MKV direct blu-ray rips with subtitles (really critical that subtitles work). Are these android sticks fast enough to do that kind of thing off USB smoothly, with mxplayer or something?
I purchased Minix Neo G4. It plays everything including 1080p mkv via WiFi (150N).

This is a reason I went with the MK802IIIS....I can use my smart phone to control..
Remember that (most of) these sticks won't do (as the software can't) dts/ac3 passthrough over HDMI.
So expect to be using only 2.0 stereo over hdmi.

Are you talking about having the android stick mirror what is on your phone? I don't think so. Some phones with HDMI out can plug into the HDMI port on the TV and mirror.
When people talk about controlling the android stick with their phone, it means they can use their phone as essentially a touchscreen. The stick should be able to browse to any website that you can browse to on your phone. Unless you've got some kind of restrictions on your router. In that case if your phone is rooted, tether off your phone.
neo g4 come with a remote, that makes it more portable to me

miracast and wifi

Why is it that once I connect to miracast it will disconnect from wifi? Is it hardware limitation or software bug? My Samsung note 2 can connect on both miracast and still maintain wifi connection.

I believe that Sonys implementation of Miracast is wrong.
From what I read, Miracast it self allows for up to 10 connections and as you say your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 can handle both network connection and Miracast.
There's two threads at Sony's Xperia Forum that discuss this problem.
At first the Xperia Team said it was by design, but when several users explained that Samsung phones can have a Wifi connection active at the same time and that all Nexus phones running 4.2.2 could also handle this,
then the Xperia Team said that they would escalate the issue, but after that there has been no more feedback...
Here's the threads at Sony's Xperia Forum:

This is actually a really bad thing. I also purchased the push2tv system so could stream Netflix and YouTube from my tablet. No luck with that. My HTC one does it without problems.
I am starting to think that what if the random wifi disconnections are related and is because Sony uses only one antenna while there should be two.

actually the tablet z uses MIMO and has 2 antennas. in my opinion it´s clearly a software restriction.
I had the same issue since i bought the dock and push2tv for the same reason. Unfortunately nothing so far. It is definitely a software problem as Sony seems to have fixed it with the Xperia Z Ultra. It works fine while still connected to wifi.
The Xperia Z disconnects also by the way.

No. I have to assume it's a hardware restriction then, or Sony can't or won't fix it.
I am now using MHL, which seems like a far easier solution - although even that cuts the performance of the phone considerably. Epic Citadel can benchmark at around 59fps on the phone display, but output via HDMI and it drops things to 30-40fps.

That's weird if it works on the T. I think this needs to be clarified. If it does, Sony really should be able to make it work, or else asked why they went backwards with the Z/TZ by changing the Wi-Fi specs/antennas.
I am going to go and check my Nexus 4 and see if that retains the connection. Previously I couldn't connect it to my TV but a new LG update on the TV has hopefully fixed things.
So did Sony really f*ck this up here. Unbelievable..I must say that I am so disappointed now. I was hoping to stream Netflix from the tablet.
Maybe I then have to get chromecast when available in Europe. I assume that it doesn't use miracast to do the streaming but likely it will stream on its own.

Right, just tried my Nexus 4 and it does keep the Wi-Fi connection. However, there's a lot more lag and the TV image doesn't quite keep up. What's more, the picture breaks up when it doesn't on the Xperia Z.
However, having an Internet connection does of course mean you can now stream TV and movies with Netflix or Google Play. Play crashed when playing a film though, and I have to say I didn't realise it could output a different screen. Netflix doesn't support this, and I'm not sure what else might (perhaps YouTube and other Google apps?).
Anyway, here are some photos I took;

Forget it, guys.
This concept of streaming stuff from the tablet is going to fade anyway.
For Youtube, Netflix etc. simply shell out $35 and get a Chromecast.
Or buy a Raspberry Pi and make your own Chromecast-y device.
Or buy a Satellite receiver like the Vu+ Solo2 and use Airplayer plugin.
All these solutions have in common that the streaming happens on the other device, not the tablet, and therefore is simply more stable and reliable (especially when a wired network connection is used). The tablet is only a controller, a"chooser" for media. (That's also more battery-friendly, by the way.)
Yes I know it should keep the wifi connection. I am mirrorring with my HTC One and wifi doesn't disconnect.
Only problem with HTC One is that after using for an hour or so the phone will get so hot that I get some warning message about it.
So that much for watching a movie like that.

Yes thats basically the better way to do it. I also do have WDTV Live and I can basically use Youtube so that I control with tablet and play on the big screen. Unfortunately the software on WDTV Live is buggy as hell and it crashes every now and then.
Also for some reason Netflix doesn't have this similar possibility.

I agree that the Chromecast way of doing things is the way forward for streaming services. However, I'd have liked to be able to play games without lag/dropped frames on the big-screen - and it seems that with or without the Wi-Fi connection staying open, the quality isn't quite there.
Maybe Snapdragon 800 improves this - and that could be something to sway me towards Honami - but perhaps Miracast will remain useful for showing off photo and videos stored locally (your own content) as a far better option than DLNA that rarely, if ever, works with modern video formats and resolutions.
Things like Miracast etc. are mostly used at home, where you have your TV or projector.
But at home it's not necessary to store the videos on a tablet and then stream them to the TV.
At home one has some kind of NAS from which the files are fetched.
I admit that for a long time I also thought about using the tablet as media hub / storage.
But if one thinks a bit about it and researches, it becomes obvious that much better and tried-and-tested options exist.
And for all other cases (like projecting different apps or playing a game on the big screen) the Tablet Z has a MHL/HDMI output, that's what it's for.

Even MHL slows the phone down, which must be a hardware limitation of the phone.
SlimPort is even worse. I don't know what sort of handshaking is carried out with that, but on my Nexus 4 when I was at CES I was on the stand of a company making them and we hooked my phone up to have the phone crash (even restarting on occasion) within seconds of connecting it.
I'd be interested to see if Snapdragon 800 has less problems with TV output, via Miracast or a cable - but the idea of using the smartphone as a remote to control streaming directly to a device (like a TV with a wired Internet connection) certainly makes sense. Google has once again come up with something great here, and it's probably totally the opposite of the direction Apple intends to take TV in the future.
Miracast
Hi guys, has anyone else had problems connecting their XTZ using miracast? I have the push2tv and my HTC One connects perfectly, but my Xperia tablet gives the error "Could not turn on screen mirroring. The output device does not support HDCP". It seems very strange as the tablet is listed the supported devices on Netgear's site.
I have the 312 version, and have the latest firmware on the push2tv.
this problem definitely not solved within 4.2 update. Dissapointing.

This ist what I posted in the sony forum thread under talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Tablet-Z/Can-t-do-Screen-Mirroring-miracast-and-WiFi-connection/td-p/333179/page/3[/url]
Sooo, installed Cyanogenmod 10.2 (based on Android 4.3 which supports WiDi/Miracast natively) and see there:
WIDI/Miracast and the connection to my home WiFi Network work simultaneously.....!!!
So Sony, two lessons for you here:
1. Get of your collective ***** and get Android 4.3 going without nerfing perfectly fine core features
2. If you're going the forum/community way, provide correct information (aka really ask your developers) and don't spew half informed nonsense/play the information hiding game...
To everyone else here: give them ****, or they will never learn!
PS: Who wants to try, google Cyanogenmod ("Pollux" -for LTE variant- or "Pollux_Windy" -for WiFi only variant-). Warning!: Possible Warranty void when flashing custom ROMS
