It's official - no ICS for X2 from Motorola and Verizon - Motorola Droid X2

Well, it's official now per the Motorola Android Software Upgrade page: the X2 will STAY on the GB kernel (v2.3). No ICS for us.
https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
This, coupled with Verizon's attempts to shoo me away what with killing the "New Every Two" program, charging a $30 fee for "free" upgrades, and now taking away the grandfathered unlimited data plan and you can bet once ALL the contracts are up on my Verizon plan, I'm switching to Sprint.
Verizon and Moto can flounder for all I care. I'm going either HTC or Nexus. Luckily, the Nexus is on Sprint so I can get an unlocked bootloader which will be nice.

Honestly, who saw this coming? Typical Motorola. Yet more reasons not to buy Motorola. F'em!
If Sprint would cover our area like VZW does I'd switch in a heartbeat. Living in the sticks sucks.

"Droid X2 - Will remain on Android 2.3" That is until Dragonzkiller gets done with it. lol
Thats why I feel nothing good will ever come from carriers and manufacturers. They give us the device and service and it is the GREAT DEVELOPERS that give us the good stuff.

Stay away from HTC. I have had two of their devices. never got an update beyond a minor maintenance. Locked bootloaders and all the baggage from Sense tagging along in the kernels and framework usually keeps them from getting useful updates or custom work even from 3rd party. ANd they are bleeding red ink and going down in quality as well as customer support. Notice their flagship phones no longer even have SD card slots.

Not surprised at all, I knew this phone was doomed when it took so long to get it up to 2.3.4.
Oh well, now we wait for CM9 (and I wait for another upgrade)

As I said before, it's sad that a single hobbyist can do what an entire development team cannot. They're doing this solely so that people upgrade to their new phones.
The Droid X2 isn't even a year old. This is completely ridiculous. I am never buying another Motorola phone again.

It'd be nice if they'd be honest and just put "Lazy/can't handle the bloatware."
Also, Q3 for everything except the newest phones...disgraceful.

Yep. As said, I'm just pissed that the X2 isn't getting ICS even though it's ONLY ELEVEN MONTHS OLD.
Any recommendations for a good phone company that unlocks their bootloaders and supports their phones?

I'm not too upset I suppose. This confirmation just means that this X2 is the last Motorola phone I'll ever buy.

It is now time for you guys to flip off Verizon and Motorola by showing what a single dude accomplished which several of their so called software engineers failed to accomplish or are unwilling to accomplish!!! Off to Verizon and Motorola twitter feeds!!!

A key reason for doing away with them is so as to avoid lags due to the sd card... that is what google themselves said...

Well, isnt the Atrix the sister of Bionic? I heard from VZW that it was delay due to melting issue. Over heat in situation due to the dual core it uses.
Motorola phones are pointless if you care about aosp kernels etc

I like the fascinate, I dont like samsung, the samsung charge looks a lot like the fascinate, with LTE, and front facing camera, I think is better than the thunderbolt, but again, what good is it to have an unencrypted bootloader if the source codes are not released by samsung, see how we have managed with the fascinate, just hunting for leaks, fortunately we have better releases from our devs than from samsung or verizon, and it is very true what Nitsuj17 wrote, we dont want to support a company that wants to control how you use your owned and purchased with your hard earned money phone, screw motorola.
in simple words, I think I am leaning towards samsung charge

Correct and correct. Cyanogen (of all people) has actually picked LG over HTC for his next phone because of this.
I have been with samsung since my first cellphone back in 2004, I will be getting the charge when the price drops.
I think all of them will eventually lock bootloader. Either that or suck.**** on release like samsung. Tbolt looks promising, so is charger.

Same here. I think I'm addicted to the AMOLED screens (cause it sure isn't TouchWiz, using SPB Mobile Shell on the Omnias and LauncherPro on the Fascinate).
The Charge is the new 'big brother' to the Fascinate. The same guts more or less (nothing has changed profoundly), but the 4.3" SuperAMOLED+ Screen vs the 4" SuperAMOLED screen is sexy. Then you sprinkle a little 4G in there and some new cameras, and bam, you have the Charge.

With the OTA 2.2 update tho I'm pretty damn happy with my Fascinate once again. I really think it'd take a screamin' dual core 4G phone to make me really want to jump to a new on.
Yeah I think a dual core would make me more likely to upgrade even sooner.
The charge originally was supposed to be a dual core, but alas it was not to be.
$300 is steep, but if you think about it, its the exact same price as a 32gb iphone.
Think how much better a charge will be than an iphone:
almost 1 inch larger next gen screen.
lte
not stuck on inferior os
etc etc
If you think about it that way, the price seems much more palatable.
I just hope they make the physical buttons better than the DX. Those were flimsy.
That is steep. All of my last four phones were all under 250. Charge has less ram than tbolt. So what warrant the price?

Verizon pissed at HTC?

Could this be true?
Verizon and authorized dealers are almost hiding the Rezound from customers. I have been in a number of stores where the Rez was either not on the sales floor or was over powered by other phones like the Razr or Gnex.
I always wondered why Verizon would do this considering the power of the phone and the millions that went into promoting the Rezound before launch.
Could the reason be because Verizon is pissed that HTC took the ONE series to another provider and left them high and dry? Also there is no HTC phone coming up at Verizon (I could be wrong about that so don't kill me).
What do you think?

I'm not sure its lack of advertising so much as the Rezound & the Nexus are not really what the average Joe Schmo customer is looking for.
I recently ran into a couple really smart, really rich guys I have known for years & both where using iphones. One guy lives on Cape Cod (in a 3 million dollar house) & I stay with him for a week every Summer. When I was there, him/his Wife/his son & his daughter where all using iphones.
When I asked him what the appeal was, he said "I just want it to work & the iphone has never let me down. It also has great battery life & does everything I need it to do"
Both guys could care less about customizing/unlocked bootloaders/custom ROMs etc. Heck, none of them had changed anything but the wallpaper in their phones & they LOVE them.
Users here would NEVER be happy with the restrictions of an iphone, but we ARE NOT the typical average VZ customer by any means. We are a tiny fraction of actual users.
Without a doubt VZW is forcing every sales rep to push Razr's. Everytime I had to visit a retail store in the last few months the rep would go out of their way to recommend or suggest that I look at the Razr.
Sales representatives are just manufacturer lobbyist now, most can't tell you the specs without looking at the data sheets.
you know why we're forced to push the razr? they offer a spiff. it adds more money to what we make every time we sell, and Motorola has a website where you register sales and win prizes for selling them. honestly, I'm liking the razr more and more each day. my boss got the razr maxx and loves it.. came from the Inc 2 with extended battery. the maxx is thinner than the rezound! lol.. either way, that's why we push the razr. thing is, i've got four rezounds in stock that i can not get rid of because we can't sell them at 199 because we'll be negative for each phone. verizon really screws us with these constantly changing prices

This. My wife rocks the TB and it kills me how much better the battery life is. I think there may have been some kind of hardware flaw baked into the rezound. Eating up 800+ mA just from turning on the screen is crazy! (Although, the screen is so sick!)
I still dig the phone, but I feel like its going to be a long 2 years when its all said and done. Having to be constantly plugged in is a *****. This post just cost 3% LOL!

I think you're right. I cant remember seeing any verizon smartphone commercials other than their annoying droid razr commercials every 5 seconds all day long. I dont know if its verizon or motorola footing the bill for that advertising but its got to be expensive.
It seems weird that for such a great phone, I had to walk to the back of the store to find it (after another store in town didn't carry it). Verizon also had the iPhones in the back corner, actually further back than my gem of a phone. I love the Rezound and love that HTC has made leaps and bounds past their older models (former EVO 4G owner). The battery life is much better than before, but I know it's still not perfect. I can't complain though with 20 hour battery life with listening to music 5 hours straight and using the navigation for a half hour, along with constant email/messaging/data usage.

Wish I had kept GB..

I dunno. It looks pretty. The UI is very quick and snappy. The battery life is worse, my phone has random reboots every couple of days, i lose connectivitity randomly throughout the day and I want watch flash embedded videos..
My phone fit my lifestyle quite nicely 7 days ago... Now I'm stuck with something that is no better than my Droid X2.. Oh wait, its prettier...
yah, the bug thread in particular is unsettling. i think i'm going to stay with GB for a while. I wish there was a downgrade path so could try ICS OTA out.
Are you using the full OTA update or a leak?
Full OTA .211 - didn't mess around with leaks or sideloading to try and avoid some of these issues.
I agree i get worse battery life on ics ota. I liked GB i got the maxx for the battery life all the bells and whistles are just ehhhh. On the other hand there seems to be an update that popped up tgis am maybe it will help.

What? You're going to blame people being upset with this update on Motorola not unlocking the bootloader? I know a lot of people are upset that Motorola is locking down their devices, and I am one of them, but people are throwing around the locked bootloader as the excuse for every problem on many of Motorola's devices. The problem here is NOT the bootloader. Yes, it would allow some people to not fear upgrading or downgrading unofficially as much, but just as many would be more afraid because with such a great power comes great responsibility. The bootloader unlocks more potential for the phone, but it also unlocks more potential to brick it (sure, depending on how you brick it, it may be easier to undo, but I remember on HTC devices that if you mess up your recovery partition, that's the end of your phone. Not sure if it's the same on Motorola phones, this is only my second one and both have had locked bootloaders). This has nothing to do with poor management or their decisions to put certain restrictions on their devices; it has to do with Motorola releasing ICS under pressure from the community so that they'd meet their Q2 release date, and then when there are minor issues in the ICS release (which may be major for some people, but everyone uses his/her phone differently) everyone starts complaining about them.

I bought the best hardware available for cellular voice communication available today, engineered by engineers who obviously know how to do that better than anyone else. Corporate managers purposely cripple software, no one else does. I know the pricks in upper management better than you could guess and bailed out of that world to do something real. American corporate management pricks destroyed our industry, and now they've sifting through the ashes to find the last little pieces so they can destroy them too, in hopes of banging their secretary a few more times and maybe buy one more new Porsche. Chances of Jelly Bean on Droid X2?

Forgive me if this topic has been beat to death elsewhere in the forum, but I have not found any discussion on this, here in the General forum at least.
I know we don't even have a stable ICS build yet, but...I remain hopeful.
Should I bother to even hope for Jelly Bean on my shiny new Droid X2? Yes, I am new to the X2..it was my wife's decision, it has to do with being on the Verizon network on a re-seller for half the price and twice the data and no contracts. Anyway, I'm not giving up on the X2 just yet but I might down the road if Jelly Bean is not even an option for us, which is why I am asking.
Thanks!
I doubt Jellybean is coming to the Droid X2, at least by way of an OTA update.
CM9 is in early alpha on the X2, but despite this, I highly recommend it. It's relatively stable, in my experience.
However, Jellybean depends on many more kernel modifications than ICS. It's unlikely, granted the difficulty of porting to an earlier kernel, that JB will be ported. At least until Motorola unlocks bootloaders, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Fully functional? Not until we get an unlocked bootloader, everything that will actually work on our kernal? Whenever dkz somehow finds the time... I don't see how it's possible but time and again he does the impossible. I have no doubt that we have been spoiled with the best of the best in our dev.
cm7dx2
To get JB, you have to have ICS first. There will not be an official ICS for the X2 as Motorola has already stated that.
DZK, as others have stated, has begun work on CM10 for the X2 which is JB. However, CM10 overall for everyone is in VERY early alpha stages at this point in time. Remember, JB is just Android 4.1, so it's still ICS-based which means, you're still going to have all the memory issues that ICS and CM9 is currently experiencing.
Without an unlocked bootloader, replacing the kernel is impossible (unless they can get KEXEC working correctly). Otherwise, DZK will have to program around the kernel which means it's still using GB APIs and memory management which is what is causing a whole host of issues with getting ICS to run properly on the X2. But even then, that won't solve all the issues as it comes down to the hardware architecture as well: Tegra chipset, 512MB memory, etc. Some say the 512mb isn't the issue as there are other 512mb phones running ICS, but from what I understand, they also are NOT Tegra-2 based and that is where the issue lies as well with how it was architected.
It's the main reason I left the X2. Motorola pretty much abandoned it and that's why I'm on a RAZR now. I would say getting JB on the RAZR is more likely than getting ICS on the X2 ever was since JB is ICS-based. Of course, by the time we would get JB on the RAZR, I'm sure android 4.2 or 5.0 will be coming out and I'm pretty sure THAT won't come to the RAZR (well, we MIGHT get 4.2).
Dragonzkiller just tweeted a pic of JB presumably on his dx2.

Thanks!

Man, don't beat yourself up too bad for having your X2. My bride has mine and there's still times I gotta pick it up snd tinker with it. Yea it's limited, but with devs like DZK and others, it keeps things interesting.
Tomsgt posted a pic of the lockscreen in the off topic thread of JB. Looks NICE!

Not true, at all.
I do agree with the rest of your post.
I have decided that Googarola is the most rotten POS out there. Coupled with the dinosaur Verizon, it is a lost cause.
The latest news from the dinosaur about continuing bootlocking is the giant signal from New York of a raised middle finger to its customers.
I salute then with a returned middle finger and add in an additional right handed up and down jerking motion.
Let this be a lesson to all: Verizon hopes to copy the"I know what's best for you" law breaking NYC Mayor Bloomberg's actions.
Here's a Bronx cheer to Verizon and Googarola: "See yahs, we ain't doing no more business any more!"

You clearly didn't get the message about profits. How can moto keep selling you new hardware if they always make your old phone better???
And how can Verizon charge you and exrar $10 for each and every useful feature if you get them for free from hackers. Comon buddy , get in the game. Companies have to make their obscene profits somehow.

I think he's providing some well deserved sarcasm my way.
I work in speech recognition and find US carriers to be smoking some nasty weed that makes them believe that they are Ma Bell in 1954.

okay, that made no sense at all

It was total sarcasm. Verizon has been hitting the cocaine mainstream for 10 years, but some people still pay the devil his due.

What phone will you be going to/did go to after the X2?

Thought this would be a fun thread.
I'm interested to see what phone people are going to after enduring the x2 for any amount of time.
Personally, I'm thinking about the Note 2, HTC "mystery 5" 1080p" phone, or a nexus (although there are pretty much no details on any of those yet).
I got a Nexus. I'll be getting the next nexus when it drops.

Tired of the failure of smart phone promises and over priced data plans on Verizon. Going back to the basic of communication.

i fershur went old skool, im sporting the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate
ROM: Euroskank CM10
Kernel: Devil3 1.4.1
OC'd: 1365-210
My contract isnt up until April of next year. So unless there isnt anything better out by then (which I'm sure there will be), I will get a Nexus since that is what I really want now. But honestly, the newest Motorola Phones that were just announced dont look bad. Especially if their boot loaders are unlockable and they give me 100 bucks towards it. But I just have to wait and see what comes out when my contract is up. Right now, I'm leaning towards nexus.

I feel you there. Why didn't you switch to a different carrier instead of get rid of it altogether though?

I think that if you're on Verizon you have to get a developers edition of a motorola phone in order to get an unlocked bootloader.. I do like the looks of the Razr M, but I'm not really feeling spending an extra $500 for something we should be able to do in the first place. Damn Verizon.
Im going to get whatever awesome phones will be dropping early next year. If nothing impresses me. Nexus

They were. It looks as though so far that tool works for every carrier besides the big V. This article shows only the dev editions getting the bootloader unlock as of now. I'm sure that can change, but I don't trust VZW or Moto until it happens.
Also, what would the difference be between the dev edition and regular edition if both could be unlocked..?

One thing I like about my DX2 is the feel. It's sturdy, manly. When I got the SIII, the first thing I noticed was how cheap it felt. I know it's a capable phone, but it felt like a toy phone for a kid. Anyway, sold it and still haven't found anything else I like. With that said, the HD developer edition will probably be in my hand come the winter holiday season.
I'm going for the droid razr HD. That's a sexy phone lol
I'm definitely not going back to Motorola. I like the SGS3 or Note 2, I might try the Note 2 esp if it does really come to VZW. Whatever I get has to have JB preinstalled. I like the fact that both phones have 2GB of RAM, it seems to "future-proof" whatever updates coming from Google. (I know updates are not guaranteed however)
Depends on what cspire has in an year and a half. Either the sg3 or the photon q

I went from the X2 to the incredible 2 and I love it, unlocked boot loader so I can run jelly bean and I have it over clocked to 1.6Ghz so for a single core it runs it very well. My contract isn't up for a while so I will have to wait and see what is out then.
