[Q] Daily driver with solid VLC and Skype support? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right now I have my GTab running Cyanogen 7, which is a solid daily driver. However, it locks up when I try to set the internal memory as the primary device. More importantly, the VLC I have running is quite studdery on high quality movies and refuses to play some formats.
Most importantly to the rom I want running is Skype support. Video in and out, sound as well. I see a very limited number of Froyo roms with a Skype fix. Has this been brought to any other versions of android? Obviously I would prefer ICS with VLC and Skype, but I see the roms out do not support the camera.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you will want to go with a Froyo rom for now to get what you want. I am sure they will get the camera working for ICS soon, but right now it's not working and who knows if Skype will work when it does. I like CM7 for it's stability but no HW acceleration means no HD video and poor gaming.
Since you are running CM7 are you on 1.1 or 1.2 bootloader? There is a new version of CM7 for the Gtablet, but I don't know if Skype works or not. My favorite Froyo rom for 1.2 is Beasty, very fast and stable. You can use any Froyo rom that doesn't include the Skype fix by flashing this kernel in CWM.
For better video playback in non Froyo roms, try MXPlayer. It can use software decoding that is optimized for ARM7 (Gtablet) so video playback is much better without working hardware acceleration. By the way where did you get VLC from?

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I'm going to flash Beasty when I get my hands on the tablet again. I'll apply the camera fix as well if need be. Any recommended tweaks to Beasty other than that upon a fresh install?
CM7 RC3 is out now as well, if Beasty isn't all it's cracked up to be I'll load it up. I'm kind of excited for Beasty though, looks great.
Also the VLC version I have is admittedly a little outdated, so I'll definitely be trying a new one. MXPlayer was studdery as well on my CM7 so I'll try on Beasty with overclock.

MY CM7 Tablet Tweaks Review

This is (was) a request for some feedback/review of the CM7 Tablet Tweaks rom for Harmony/Gtablet. Also which files do I install and whats the entire process that was taken to get the market working and which Gapps link did you use? I've installed a few roms so far but reading some of the CM7 forum post i've been hesitant to install CM7 due to some of the old bugs I read about.
I read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028088
but I believe there have been updates to the rom files and not sure which ones to install.
What does or doesn't work with this CM7 Rom? I know video acceleration isn't working but can you still play 720p video through software video players?
What are benchmark scores?
What bugs have been found?
Is it stable? ie. random reboots?random freezes?
EDIT:
So 71 views and I just decided to take the dive into cynogenmod... Totally easy install.
I don't know why I was scared.
Just installed CM7 nightlies 41 check cyanogenmod website for link Look for HARMONY nightlies
with Tablet Tweaks theme apk http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041588
Installed also Pershoots latest GB kernel 1400mhz
Brief install instructions-
1. Flash nightlies 41 zip via CWM
2. Flash GAPPS.zip
3. Flash Pershoot Kernel for Gingerbread.
Reboot and should boot quick.
All benchmarks run at 1400mhz max
SmartBench - 4564
Quadrant - 2225
Linpack - 51.463 mflops
Will post video showing actual Video playback and Game playability. Feels silky smooth so far guys.
I'm liking the Honeycomb theme which looks amazing.
Thanks Cyanogenmod team for such an amazing ROM.
Not working-
Video recording
HD video playback not working- fix is to use different players, sometimes this fixes the issues
Sound Playback - have to plug/unplug headphones in order to make speakers play sound
Camera takes pixelated pictures
Some games not working - Minigore (Must have)
Touch screen is jittery when playing games involving 2 virtual joysticks
Some apps just don't work with the Rom, IE.. Quickoffice
[UPDATE]
I was going to do a short video but no longer have my camera (long story)
Last minute thoughts before wiping
- without video acceleration it makes the G Tablet for me unusable, I love the HONEYCOMB theme, seriously it looks awesome but all that good paint on the outside without allowing me to use the video capabilities to their max/video performance is a deal breaker now for me. I will be back to CM7 once the video issues are fixed.
*Goodbye Honeycomb Paint Job*

CM7 and Moonsoon's Vulkano

Well I am on my third Gingerbread rom (6th overall rom) and I finally have gotten the Vulkano to stream in all situations. Last night I downloaded CM7's nightly build 58 and flashed my G-Tablet. Installation was very smooth using clockworkmod and all 128 apps were restored using Titanium back with no problems. I had wiped and formated just about everything I could before doing the installation. After that I went to the market and downloaded the Vulkano player and at last sucess. I was able to stream from the vulkano both locally and over the internet. I realize some other people have had sucess using Corwins rom (CM7 based), and that was going to be next if this did not work. I had previously tried G-Harmony with no sucess, and then Vegan Tab GB with limited succes. The strange thing with Vegan Tab was it would stream over the internet however it would not stream when I was home locally. Watching the bandwidth I was getting at home the software player seemed to choke everytime it was over 1 mb/sec. When I was out of the house and connected over the internet it worked fine at speeds anywhere from 300-900k. This leads me to believe the hardware accelleration that is now included in CM7 is working with this app allowing it to run over my local network. Another thing that I have struggled with is getting recorded shows downloaded to my G-Tab. Well I still can not get it to work with any rom and the vulkano player but I have a work around for now. By down loading the videos using UPNPdownloader (avlalable in the market for free) you can then watch the recordings using MOBOPlayer or Rockplayer. Now for even better news when Rockplayers asks if you want to use hardware decoding and you answer yes the videos run close to flawlessly. On the other two GB roms it obviously would not work using the hardware decoding. They did run on the roms using the software decoding but they would stutter even at the lowest recorded resolutons. When playing high quality recordings they would be unwatchable due to the delay in video processing in which the sound which was a full 3-5 seconds ahead of the picture. This would make all sense since the Vulkano records in the H.264 video format and if I am not mistaken that is the portion of hardware accelleration that is working. Well I hope this helps someone else.
Lastly I do miss the Vegan Tab interface, the VT Launcher was very smooth and the rom was much more tablet oriented. I can not wait until gojimi includes this in his rom since the rom is CM7 based if I am not mistaken. Please excuse any typos and good luck.

Interesting. I have a vulkano, and am running vegantab with pershoot's latest overclocked kernel - I have not gotten around to getting it set up, but under that other OS (er, iOS?) I would pull over 2Mbit/sec (more like 3) for local HD content, and 1.5+ for remote (yay for comcast HSI) - I should test it out. I'll let you know what I see tomorrow!

Sounds good I am interested to see what happens. I am currently streaming between 1.6 and 2.0 mb/secs locally using the wireless router Verizion put in when I got Fios. My iphone streams locally between 300k - 600k usually.

VeganGinger just gives me a black screen and spinning "buffering" with the Vulkano inside the home. Meh. Not so good!
For the record, Vulkano (Monsoon) refuses to support G Tab and Android 2.2 at all. I'm now in a legal war with these clowns. be careful on CM7 as you may still encounter buffering quite often and screen lockups.
Vulkano issues on CM7 for Evo
I have the Vulkano player working flawlessly on my Nook Color running CM7.1 RC1
However, I cannot for the life of me get it working CM7 and my Evo 4G. Tried the stable and testing builds. I'm still debating if I really want to move to a nighly, but I might just do it to see if it works and restore back to 7.1 RC1.
BTW, I'm so happy they finally have a root process for the Evo 4G on Gingerbread!

Hello,
I am trying to make if possible the android vulkano application to work with 4.4.2 or Lollipop and stream while the screen is off.
This was possible with my 2.3.7. But with newer devices seems impossible. I am digging up some old vulkano posts incase somebody figured this out.
Thank you very much.

[Q] CyanogenMod 7(7.0.3-Harmony) or VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1?!?!?!

This question was raised many times but as new (sable) version of mod ROM become available, I would like to ask it again which ROM has most improvements and more complete?
Is it CyanogenMod 7(7.0.3-Harmony) or VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1?!?!?!
For example:
• VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1 does not support High Definition Video Hardware Decoding. How about CyanogenMod 7 (7.0.3-Harmony), does it?
Is anything that supported by VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition STABLE RC1 but CyanogenMod 7 (7.0.3-Harmony), does not support it?
I would like to build kind of side by side comparison of 2 latest stable releases.
Ps. Personal question:
Does any of mod ROM support Bluetooth Microphone? (Original build (3588) does not!)
VEGAn-Ginger is built off the source of CM7.0. So if you are running VEGAn-Ginger you are really running CM7 base with some framework changes and a few additions/tweaks that Gojimi felt were better (some Google Apps installed, icon/graphic changes, etc..).
CM7.0 has gone to CM7.01-stable, CM7.02-Stable and now sitting at CM7.03-stable with many nightly versions in between. (Nightlies have moved to a new branch....OS 2.3.4 while the 'stable' versions are on the 2.3.3 branch).
Some of the tweaks Gojimi made in his release are now part of CM7.03 while the underlying source has also been updated by the CyanogenMod team.
Netflix works on CM7.03, it does not work on VEGAn-Ginger.
Both were nice when released, but CM7.03 has moved forward and implemented new features/code updates/bug fixes, AOSP merges etc.. while VEGAn-Ginger is still based off old CM7.0.
Thank you, tcrews.
You probably cleared a lot if newbie (like me) questions by this simple post.
so does CM7.03 support High Definition Video Hardware Decoding? (if not - does it mean I will not be able to watch 1080p videos?)
does CM7.03 support Bluetooth microphone? (I hope it still supports Bluetooth headphones)
Thanks
Partial hardware acceleration has been added to CM7.03 but not full.
The problem is that no hardware drivers for the chipset have been released that are compatible with Gingerbread.
I don't use bluetooth for anything so can't answer that question.
Also, it looks like gojimi has stopped development on the gtablet. It doesn't appear that VEGAn will be getting frequent updates anytime soon.
CM7 is being updated fairly regularly though. If you want gingerbread, also try the gharmony and vanilla aosp based roms. They have all the cm7 libraries
I used VeganGinger till last week. The installed CM7 and am loving it.
No more battery draining when idle. No waiting 20 min for it to boot up. It just works better for me.
Could you pls. confirm, CyanogenMod supports Skype video calls on G Tablet?
Thanks
Ps. I assume TNT Lite (retired) supports High Definition Video Hardware Decoding because it based on Android 2.2?
How bad it, do not have HD Video Hardware Decoding? (Presumably question to current CyanogenMod users) Can you watch movies, any limitation?
i got a new gtab with 1.2 bootloader. I would like to try this new cm7 since it is gingerbread and plays netflix... where is a link with instructions to use this rom?
Thanks!

If you get the chipmunk effect, don't give up, just do some research, for me it was an easy fix, i just had to modify the build.prop file
I have used a USB wireless 2.4Ghz Keyboard on CM7.03 Stable. It was plug and play. Not tried blutooth headphones yet.

[Q] What's the most stable Froyo ROM?

I currently have 'VEGAn-TAB ROM BETA 5.1 FINAL' installed as of yesterday and it's already crashed while I was watching a video. I know Gingerbread doesn't have video acceleration so I would like to avoid that if possible.
They're all pretty darn stable. And they're all listed at my site.

It may not be the rom that caused this...what video player was being used? what file format was the video in? when did you select if you were given the option of hard coding or soft coding? Where there are plethora of apps running in the background? What exactly was the "crash, forced reboot, lock up, video/audio distortion? Did the video file play properly on another device, ie your computer?
There are many players out there, some work well, some work kinda "eh." Some can't handle some video formats, some can play them, but not properly. Some vieo formats require decoding, hard or soft (I like hard when speaking of ice cream, but software decoding ususally works for my videos).
I'm using BC (the 1.2 version of VEGAn 5.1.1), and rockplayer to play video. I've been thinking of trying moboplayer, since it seems to have received rave reviews on this and other forums. I've been able to play .avi files with software decoding. MP4 files play fine, but the quality isn't as good..they're made for mobile devices with really tiny screens.
When I rip or download a movie, I almost ALWAYS make sure that it runs fine on my Acer netbook (same screen size) to get a general idea of what I can expect on the G-Tab.
in a nutshell, your issue may not be the rom at all...VEGAn 5.1.1 is probably one of, if not THEE most stable 1.1 based rom out there.

Any ROM based on Android 4.x with Video record working at least the same as on stock?

Hi,
Is there any ROM based on Android 4.x which has Video recording not lagging? The same level of performance as on stock will be quite enough for me... No lagging while video playback would be also nice to have. I have tried Jokersax cm9 and cm10 and both didn't have these things working. Anyway, I would like to thank Jokersax and his work done to offer community the newest fancy stuff .
Or there's a common issue with drivers which prevents having video recording working stable in any ROM on Android 4.x? Is there any other option rather than waiting for official Android ICS release for MoPho?
Thank in advance for replying.

there's no drivers available for us to use for ICS/JB. so everything is hacked to kinda work. in this case it means lots of 2d related things don't work. video recording for example. JB is quite jittery at times. all due to lack of drivers.
if you want a stable rom with everything working. use a gingerbread rom.

CM7 by JOKERSAX is definately the best option for the most stable opperating system in my eyes, no offence to other builds or devs.
the cm10 version is running great for me after doing very small mods to get it working. I DO HAVE WORKING VIDEO ON CM10!!
The video illusions is the only video camera app ive had that works well and dosnt seem to run verry slow.. i had to disable HWA on the gallery and on the camera and the video cam app to reduce jitter and FC. but CM10 or any AOKP seems to be verry solid, i love to run AOKP JB roms from time to time to switch things up, THEBILL has a great selection to offer, jump to page 1 on any build to see what is still broken (borked?)
but the issue is that the drivers are hacked up from gingerbread and this is the best it will be + a few mods to improve quality until the release of ICS comes out, big hopes now with the photon Q being out and running ics/Jb
GOOD LUCK
let me know if i helped any!!
