You can also skip adding another app entirely and just do it using Tasker. Method here. No ads, no extra app running, great solution IMO.

I'm not sure that this particular method would work if you keep those names, but who knows, there may be a workaround. I actually keep the files with descriptive names in dropbox, but when I move the ones I want to use over to the SD card, I rename them 1 through whatever. That way, I keep the names for my purposes, but they behave when they're on my phone.
Definitely worth the effort to learn how to use Tasker, it's really a revolutionary app. You can eliminate a LOT of standalone apps that just do specific tasks like this using Tasker, and make your phone behave in ways that are positively magical.

[MOD]HTCLinkifyDispatcher Fix

Running a Sense 3.6 or 4.0 ROM and tired of not having a choice what app to use?
Sick of Apple and their patent infringement lawsuits?
This script will revert the workaround HTC put in place to comply with the ITC's order to remove the patent infringement.
This script makes a backup of your current build.prop, and then EDITS IT IN PLACE.
What does this mean? It means you can flash THIS file on ANY ICS 3.6 or 4.0 ROM on this phone and it will not mess up any tweaks your specific ROM dev has put in place.
Why is this important? There are a number of build.props edited with this fix (and others)...some of them are from the stock ROM and some are from various other custom ROMs. Simply copying one over your current build.prop could lose you important optimizations, or custom fixes your dev has set up. By flashing this script you keep those customizations and still get the benefit of having your choices back.
Instructions:
To tell if this edit worked for you, check in settings. If the app associations menu option is gone, then it worked.
You will need to clear defaults for specific programs in order to have a choice pop up.
Example:
If you have selected Chrome for your default browser in app associations, you will need to go to menu/settings/apps/downloaded/Chrome/clear defaults.
The next time you tap a URL you will have a choice of which browser to use.
Credits:
Thanks to iconeo for the original thread found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1693809
Thanks to Steal25 for the actual build.prop edits.
I am including two zip files. The first one will make the build.prop change to allow you to choose your own defaults.
The second one (HTCLinkify-revert.zip) will allow you to put your build.prop back to its default.
There are other build.prop edits out there and I will be creating ROM agnostic flashable zips for those as well.
Please let me know if there are any issues with this flash.
Good idea on packaging it this way it'll make it easy for those that havent made edits to a build.prop yet.
very good!

Right, that was my thought as well. Plus this way if a dev updates the ROM but doesn't add this fix in as a default, it's the easiest way to get it back.

Thanks. That was my whole point: I could see times where people would just copy over random build.prop that already had the tweak, over a ROM with a heavily edited build.prop and mess up everything their ROM Dev was trying to do...and then I thought of the poor devs trying to cope with figuring out random glitches due to build.prop changes and I thought...hey, let's make this easy for EVERYONE.
Now the users don't have to edit it themselves and the devs don't get stuck trying to figure random bugs out without knowing a user may have changed build.prop, or overwritten it.
Win for everyone.

Nope. This mod allows you to choose what app you want to launch when clicking on say a URL. This is the functionality that Apple claimed infringed one of their patents.
It doesn't have anything to do with 3rd party apps, aside from allowing you to decide which one you want to launch, either each time, or by default.

I'm still kind of confused, so was the patent on the "Complete action using" dialog box? I thought that was present in all Androids for years now, and I thought iOS didn't even give you an option.

Yep, that's what it was about. And whether android has been using it forever or not isn't the point. Apple dusted off their patent book and found that it was infringing.

Aroma app package

Hey everyone, I have been creating a list of apks for a personal aroma app installer for myself. I'm sure most of you know about this but I haven't seen it around here. Since I have a decent list of apps already, I'm offering to share it if enough people want it. I will take app requests as well to add to it. I just wanted to get an idea if people want it before I ask permission from the creators to use it. I would like to give a little something back to the community even though it's nothing difficult or spectacular.
Let me know if it's good or a waste before someone starts flaming me lol.

I've been thinking about this question, but I think I know the answer. If people submit apps, they will need to be free apps, because most paid apps don't have advanced enough license checks to prevent users from side loading them without them having purchased the license in the play store.
So am I correct to assume that the aroma installer you publish will be with free apps only?
Right off the top of my head, titanium backup and kernel tuner come to mind and nice freebies, android tuner free is another good one if you like it better.
Absolutely, only free apps. I know some obtain paid versions without paying but I will not be doing that since I do not want to cause problems for xda, myself, or others. I would be including apps such as internet browser, sms, root tools, social apps, tools, etc. Several of the more popular options for each

It would be useful to be able to load a file manager from recovery... I use Solid Explorer (paid) but I don't know if it would work to sideload the trial and then restore the key with Titanium. Maybe you could include Solid Explorer, and ES Explorer as a nice free alternative?

Like I mentioned in the previous post, I won't include paid apps for obvious reasons but es file explorer and astro will be in there. I will add solid as well.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
Just to be clear, I did mean that you could include the trial, and then users could restore or re-download the key (although I'm not entirely sure that that will work - I know that for Fancy Widgets, I have to download both the app and the key from the store unless I restore my previous Android ID, but it works fine to restore Apex and its key, and Titanium stores its license on the SD card, so I never have to install the key at all).
Although many paid apps are readily available for free, I don't see why anyone should avoid paying an extremely modest sum to help the developers maintain their devices and services and hence their apps.
Ya I know. I will add the trial version like you mentioned. And I agree. I used to get all the paid apps for free but I guess I grew up and realized I should help support them. They are so cheap to buy anyway.

You could create an empty folder for people to put their own paid apps in. Aroma does not care if the folder is empty. Just call it paid with /data/app in it.
You could also create another folder for people to drop their apps in it that you did not include.
Just don't pre select them in the menu

I know you say you have enough, but here is a request I hope would be easy... An app that would allow a long press on the volume buttons to change tracks from the current music app in use. Example, I use power amp, the HTC music app, and doggcatcher for podcasts. But most roms I can only use long press for the HTC music app. If possible, I would be grateful.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
That isn't possible as an app, and even if it is, it would hog up a lot of battery running in the background, you would need a new rom or tweak to accomplish that
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2

I would like to see an app like Boot manager, since is no longer supported and I personally have trouble making dual boot on my phone with that app (bot loops). I heard it has something to do with jb.

No I meant without the need of root access. Titanium Backup without the root access is what I'm talking about. Not every user understands rooting. I'm talking about a simple app with a click of a button just like iCloud.
But I'm guessing save datas are stored in a rooting access required location am I right? If thats the case, then only Google can come up with something.
if you are still accepting ideas..
have you seen the google glass' video that says how it feels like to wear google glass?
try making something based on that model, like the camera viewfinder is our eye and we say to give commands. Let's say we speak "what's the weather" and it shows the weather in viewfinder just like it is shown in video. other features can also be implemented.

I need your help! I need your recommendations so I can add them in after testing, this guide is incomplete and should have more options. Also, I need more sections. If there's another set of apps that you want me to review for our phone, just let me know. I'll gladly update this guide accordingly!

Well, in the end, regardless of what some of us may think our L9’s are, they are phones. I know, surprising right? Our phone has a good looking stock dialer, but MAN IT’S SLOW. So I’ve created a list of replacements that operate perfectly on our device.
exDialer: This is my personal choice, and definitely the one I recommend the most. The UI is elegant, and it’s incorporated into an extremely efficient combination of Dialer/Contacts setup. The sheer ability to switch from Dialer to Contacts smoothly without lag is an enigma in itself. If that wasn’t enough, there’s a decent amount of themes available on the Play Store to further mix it to your liking. The ICS theme is my personal favorite.
Dialer One: This is a pretty good app for those who want a fast dialer for their phone, and don’t mind not having a Contacts app to match it. This doesn’t work for me, since I need Contacts integrated into my Dialer like exDialer does. But this app does the job for those that need a dialer app by itself.
Contacts
Contacts+: Same as the app above, it’s just a shortcut to take you straight to the Contacts portion of the app. Recommended to those who want a closely integrated feel of Messaging, Dialing, and Contact…ing.
Messaging
Textra: Download this app NOW. This is seriously, as of now, the best texting app for Android. Ever heard of ChompSMS? It supports native Emoji, Group SMS with iPhonies, doable customization, and an absolutely SICK notification feature. Seriously, download this app, next text you get, click the notification and watch the magic.
Browser
Opera Browser: Okay, so this has been updated consistently for about the last year or so, and I’m LOVING it. It has a ton of options, including cloud compression on a low connection so it speeds up YOUR browsing speeds. It has the usual problems, notably lag when loading multiple images and sometimes not registering your touches when you click links. It’s Chromium based, which means it is similar to Chrome. Obviously.
Chrome: Brought to my attention by @peoplegetpeople, it's a good browser and it is useful if using Chrome on your computer and wish to sync bookmarks/history!
Must-Have Apps
Ttorrent: This app is for torrenting and "sharing" (uh-huh...) files.

Thought I'd throw these in here.
I use Now Playing for music - it's got a cards-esque UI, plays really well, beautiful widgets. And it works with ViPERFX, which is good.
Also, I've found I really like Sliding Messaging. It was buggy, sometimes it doesn't work well with MMS, but it's themeable and the new Slideover feature is great.

I suggest everyone tries this app!

I'm all about customizing my phone with random little apps. This one I found last night is called "Hello", and it is a very simple yet extremely elegant sms app. Everything is sorted in to tabs, and the coolest feature I've found so far is when you click on a picture that was sent to you through texts, it pulls up all the other pictures in that particular thread so you can quickly save them all instead of doing it one by one.
Just thought I would let you guys in on this little gem I found! Hope you guys give it shot!
Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the heads up, that is a nice app!

I'd used it if I can scale down up or front. Everything just seems too big.

I was using Hangouts before, but this looks cleaner. I'm gonna try it for a while. Thanks for the heads up.
If you like this you should check out EvolveSMS. Some of the same type stuff and you can download themes for it. I'm been using it for a while now and I love it.

Hello is really nice but on every device i have it seems to stutter eveytime i open it. If you turn on the beta access , you can send these little gifs cut out in a speech bubble. Pretty cool haha. I got all my android friends use it now, i just wish it would launch faster

Looks like hangouts
No problem! My all doesn't seem to stutter when I launch it.... I wonder why yours does.
I think the biggest thing I like about this app is the fact that you can't bog it down with themes. Just personal preference though lol.
Thank you for telling us about the app

I like EvolveSMS but seem to have an issues sending MSM.
I didn't like this Hello app at all. I don't mind the Verizon messaging app really.

my message+ app got sent to the freezer for conspiracy to slow my phone with all my other big red apps. They are now serving a 2year+ sentence with a $360 fine if they return earlier.
I like Hello, but it would send pictures as links to recipients instead of the actual pictures. I found that several people wouldn't open them. I is probably better to send them as links that people can click on and then view them, because they would come out in higher quality. But if people don't click on them, it defeats the purpose. I also didn't like how it put an advertisement for their app on each picture it sent links for.

Haha. I don't keep message + on the phone...but will install it and backup when swapping Roms on my S4. It is handy to work across devices.....but Hangouts is my go to messenger since my ios contacts are slowly converting to it from apples proprietary junk. Switched to hangouts when they added custom ringtones.

Evolve is excellent. Made me ditch 8sms, which I never thought would happen. Straightforward, with nice enough bells and whistles that aren't obnoxious.
I am getting tired of go sms, but I need sms pop ups. What is a good alternative?
