Buy or Wait for new Sony tablet (if a new one comes out)? - Sony Tablet S

Just as title says. I'm looking to buy a tablet, preferably the S. I'm aware that the S is a fairly old tablet, but Sony hasn't announced anything new. Should I wait for a new model from Sony or get the S?
Sent from my LT15a using XDA

Sony S is a good piece of kit. Not sure about the "old" bit. It is less than a year old.
Wouldn't hold your breath on Sony making a new tablet though.

Don't bother it's a hunk of junk. you would be better off with asus transfomer prime.

Sony just upgraded S to ISC 4.0.3, so it is not old. I dout there will be new release soon. There is nothing missing from this, so just buy it. Works great for me.

Sony will be bringing s2 later tbis year with quad core processor, but I'm happy with mine.if you wee to wait then you have to wait and wait as technology is evolving at a fast pace you get new things every 6 months.so go for the s1 good machine

What a great input to the topic!
I say buy one, I love mine. It was worth every penny.
have a search round in these forums theres loads of love/hate topics to read and see what people think of it.

If you are buying new there are better tablets for the price.
Start at an Asus TF300 and go from there.

I was considering the transformer prime, or maybe wait for the infinity...
But the dilemma between that was performance vs. features. The tablet S has a few more features like IR blaster that really intrigued me.
The S is currently on sale for 329.99 for 16 GB. We'll see what happens I guess.

People must not forget the price diff on tablets. I would love a bmw x1 but cant efford it so i got a mazda 5 instead.
The prime is what, £499. Sony S is £299

Wait for the new one if you have the patience. It will probably be announced in a month or two. if you cant wait that long, the current S is not too shabby either. I still love mine. You might even get a good deal on ebay for a used model.
The transformer is not in the same price bracket, just so you know.

Woot had a killer deal on these last week. Brand new, 32GB with the cradle for $259 (plus $5 shipping). I got one for sure and can't wait to get it on Friday. It'll be replacing my HP Touchpad 32GB running Android 4.04. Too many issues with that beast although I love it dearly.

Xperia tablet is coming, better wait..

Yea I was on the fence for the Sony S, but that deal on Woot sealed it for me. Got mine yesterday and it is pretty nice. Do some price hunting. I agree, the retail price is high for a Tegra 2 tablet.
Also depends on your needs... if you do not really need cutting edge, HD screen, why pay for it.

transformer prime vs htc's new tablet

So I saw over on bgr today that htc's gonna have a quad core tablet coming out in february. I'm already very enthused about the transformer prime from asus coming out next month, and wanted a few opinions. I'm debating on whether or not I'll enjoy scribe or the dock more (the promise of 18 hours of battery life is very tempting). Could I get a few transformer and flyer/evo view owners to chime in on how happy they've been with their tablets?
Do you have specs of the new HTC tablet?
I myself am probably gonna go with the Prime because of the extended battery and better IPS screen. HTC is probably going to be just Super LCD.

I wish they had specs out. all they know is that it's gonna have the tegra 3 in it. I'm kinda leaning towards the transformer... the ips display is one thing, and I really do like the form factor of it.

$499 For the T.Prime
$99 for the Keyboard Dock
$600 total.
IMHO, I'm going for the prime. I'm not sure HTC will have a good price for their upcoming tablet given the Jetstream is a hefty $700.
The Keyboard dock adds the ports & the massive boost in battery. I'm a road warrior so I'll appreciate the T.Prime more.

that 2 gigs of ram does look tempting, but I like the fact the the prime is dockable, and if I'm thinking right, is capable of 128 gigs of storage (64 built in, 32 micro sd in tablet, 32 sd in dock)
edit: or 256 if you use a 64 gig microsd and a 128 gig sd

This is the ON CONTRACT price. What are they crazy?
The prime looks really sweet! I'm going to put some blind faith in HTC though. I've allows loved how HTC's products feel, they allows feel like a really high end device. I really liked how the flyer felt in my hands when I was checking it out at best buy. I have a horrible feeling the new one is going to be super expensive though.
Al that being said I think I'm going to pick up one of the new Nook tablets because of the price and I read today that barnes and noble basicially told Micro$oft where to shove there patent licensing fees.
i'm stuck between wanting the tprime or the lenovo tablet. i mean, 2 gigs sounds sweet, but asus likes updates, and using as a laptop was really the reason i got an ipad in the first place. the only problem is the ipad can't do much. let's see if i can save up enough before release to even have a choice...
what does everyone else think?
The BGR article said the HTC tablet will be shown in February but "will launch some time before the end of the third quarter." There will be quite a few Tegra3 tablets to choose from by that time unless they release it much quicker. Hopefully they learned from that overpriced Jetstream and try to actually price competitively this time. I will be interested in hearing more on the Lenovo, but right now it looks like I am getting the Prime.

Selling my iPad 2 to get a T-Prime; this **** looks legit.
HTC Tablets have all disappointed me thus far and I'm sure the Lenovo tablet will be thick and plastic just like the last one. They have great specs but their design department sucks balls. :3 (I own a ThinkPad).
I'm a TF101 user, and love it. If it wasn't still meeting all my needs so damned well, I'd sell if for a Prime. As it stands, while the Prime specs are sweet, as fast as Asus is putting these out, by next year when my Microcenter insurance on my TF101 is almost out, Asus will have the third gen Transformer out, and I will be able to decide then whether to go with the Prime or the 3rd Gen TF. The TF101 has not failed to disappoint me, and is my primary device right now. I still have my regular Win7 laptop, but barring a few very minor shortcomings, the Transformer meets all my needs with superior battery life and a size I rather like, and I'm a university student, working on my research disertation, so my TF sees some REALLY heavy usage and document processing.
HTC makes good phones, I have the 3VO, but I don't think that I'd want the heavy UI overlays that HTC tends to put on their products, nor the price tags that tend to go with them. One of my favourite things about my TF is that it's not heavily skinned by Asus, and the UI they do have is very pleasing to the eye, without killing battery life. I'm only just now toying with the idea of rooting, but I haven't (and still don't) feel the need to root this tablet. It's so very usable thus far, and I don't have any problems with battery life or anything else. My 3VO, for the record, was promptly rooted the day I got it. Sense is pretty for a while, but just horrid on the battery, and I really prefer the vanilla Android experience.
YMMV, just my .02 on this topic. FWIW, I think any tech user should look at what they need and want from any given device, and find the one that best matches what those ideals are, regardless of brand. HTH.

My bad... I just read the first part about the Prime being $499 and the guy talking about that being an "on contract" price.

Cheap tablet

I'm going to buy one... Thinking about the n5zero (5inch) or the nova 7 paladin (7inch), I'm buying just for playing some games, read some book, and flash a lot of roms.... I'll have any problem to flash roms or root? These things came with the boatloader locked or not? I'll have any problem with this? Or it's going to be normal and easy as a normal device? (I'm not a noob, I know how to root, flash roms... I have same experience... But just to be sure...)
Ah, if you have another idea for a nice tablet in the same price (60- 120 dollars) it will be welcome...
Thanks a lot and sorry for the bad english...

Wait until later on in the year, around April - May. nVidia and ASUS are releasing a tablet for $249 with Tegra 3 (Quad-Core, of course), 1GB of RAM, and it's got a nice resolution of 1280x800.
The idea of cheap tablet may sound tempting, but there wont be developing community backing it up. So in the end you have a device with same android version forever.
Go for big manufacturers like asus, samsung, motorola.
Refurb Nook Color can be had for $129 and makes for a nice little tablet, I'm running CM9 nightlies on one as we speak, it's got a really good dev support / following.
I'll second the nook color. If you can get a refurbished one for under $150, it will beat the pants off of anything else in that price range. The display is one of the best at any price, and the build quality is exponentially better than any of the Chinese tablets.
You mention flashing custom roms - the cheap Chinese tablets don't usually have any. If you are really lucky, the manufacturer might put out an update or two. The nook color, on the other hand, has dozens of custom roms and tweaks already and plenty of people still working on more. Check the nook color development section yourself and see what I mean.
I have a arnova 10 G2 , I brought from carphone werehouse for 135 pounds.
I have added all the google staff to it ( archos hate google ) its fab .
Is it a cheep tablet , yes.
Do i look at Emails etc only on it , yes
Does it have the same power as my Desire...a wee bit less!!
Wil I put ICS on it.. one day !!
You should consider the Kindle fire. I'd also suggest looking at the htc flyer. Its a little above your price range but I think it's a great tablet. At $120 your goIng to get what you pay for, a really lousy tablet that will be a waste of money because it sucks so much. Better to spend a few extra bucks and get a useable tablet.
You should save your money, at that price point you will get an unusable POS that no custom ROM can fix.
If you can find an BNIB HP Touchpad for $100-$200, then I would grab that sucker. It runs 1.2 ghz by default, and can be overclocked to 1.7 (1.9 works too, but its unstable), and it's dual core! It's super fast with android on it, and currently has a couple unofficial builds of cm9 running smoothly on it. If you don't want to wait, the hp touchpad is a great choice. Gotta get it brand new though, as they've been discontinued and "repaired" units often involve cracks next to the speaker.
Some no name tablets will see little to no developer support so watch out for that. For your budget I would consider a Nook Color refurb. It has pretty decent dev support.
I have a no-name tablet with nice specifications for the price (Cortex A9), but it doesn't have community support. It's a pity because you can get bored easily.
kindle fire can be rooted and use android
Yeah.. I'm getting the kindle fire... The touchpad is to big for me..

Nook Tablet, imo.
I have one. $250, double the specs of Kindle Fire.
It's fully cracked now, I'm running a fully-working CM7 on it.
Also, I think ASUS' $250 Tegra 3 tablet is a myth. They just teased it to stop people from spending money on Nook and KF.
And if it ever gets released, that price won't be awesome at that point anymore. By that time those specs won't be anything special.

[Q] Good tablet to buy still?

Looking for a tablet. 10.1 been out for 11 months now. Is it outdated? I'm looking at this tablet because I trust Samsung to deliver quality products and 10.1 has been the most popular tablet I've read about.
Screen size, and android version are the most important to me.
What do u guys think. Is there another tablet I should be looking at? And no, I'm not paying $800 for a iPad, etc lol

Depends on what price your getting it for. I got a 32gb wifi one for £270 which is about $350 I think. If ics is really important and you need it NOW without rooting then it isn't for you, depending on how much you have to spend the tf201 might be better, the tf300 I heard is good but it's not available in the UK so I can't vouch for it. You could consider the tab 2 as well but in reality it probably slightly worse than the og tab sans ics!
Since your on xda I take it you care about the development aspect which probably means that the only real manufacturers you should consider would be Samsung, Asus, Archos and Motorola. Development on the acer, Toshiba, htc tabs etc are not nearly as active as others.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1 using XDA Premium HD app
I think it all depends on what your real need/expectation. I had an ASUS Transformer Prime that was far superior in most ways to the Gtab, but did not hold onto the WiFi signal well and the promised GPS, as designed, did not function. Those were two very important factors for me and I replaced the Prime with the Galaxy Tab.
The tab is slower, no ICS (yet), poorer screen touch sensitivity, fingerprints pile up in a hurry, and the cameras are not nearly as nice. BUT, for the need I have, the Prime didn't cut it and I'm much happier with the Samsung.
Just wish ICS would get here. I'm on the AOKP releases but it sure would be nice to have a working camera. (I know, I have a smart phone for that)
Not sure where you live but, in the states the galaxy tab 2 10.1 is out and retails at $400 for the 16gb wifi only version. I am sure that deals can be found for a first generation gtab, but the 16gb wifi version starts at $450.
The new one adds an SD card slot and a universal ir remote. I think the screen is close to the same if the same and the processor is pretty close too. The speakers face forward on the new one. That does seem to make a difference. Of course, the gtab2 comes with ics. The gtab1 will eventually get ics but who knows when.
Asus does have the tf-300 out at $400. Specs on paper are better than the gtab2. Personally, I'd go with a gtab2 but that is because I watch movies on my tab. I believe the Asus does have stereo speakers but they are right next to one another. The Asus does blow away the gtab2 in benchmarks but for my uses I don't see a noticeable difference. IMHO the screens on the gtab's are nicer too.

When I was considering buying my gtab my shortlisted tabs for my pricepoint were:
Archos G9 101
Moto Xoom
Asus TF101
Samsung Gtab
Toshiba Thrive
I ignored the Archos because it looked crap, I ignored the xoom & transformer because they were too heavy, thick & bulky and I ignored the thrive because it was stuck in the legacy boards. That was my reasoning!

Anyone want to buy a spare Prime?
Traded in my 3G Vita on one Saturday. So far its been an absolute pleasure to own, exactly what I was expecting.
My Prime, not so much.
Sorry guys, but I see no need on having a tablet without a dock station like the asus transformer line. I mean, a tablet without USB OTG,SD and microSD card reader and mouse pad is just an expensive toy to sit in front of the TV and surf on internet while watching at it. I use my prime both at work and while at school instead of bringing a heavy, big, overheating laptop, not to mention the battery life in the prime is way better. I know , the N7 came with a very good price, and I will buy one as soon as they reach Swedish market, but as I said before, for me it will work just as a toy to surf in front of the TV, no way that it would replace the Prime.

The N7 doesnt seem to have these strange lags caused by the internal memory speed.
Also it scores way better in the benchmarks...
good thing: it uses the same memory as the prime! on paper the same speed ...

I think what it boils down to is, get what you want period. If you love the prime and it works for you then keep it, want the infinity or 7 then get it.
Nothing is worse than having a tablet and not want it, or you are dissatisfied with it, for whatever reason. Flip side, nothing is better than having a device and really like it.
The prime really doesn't do it for me, I thought it would (it's still is the best looking tablet out bar none) but it just doesn't. In the end I treat it like a business decision, I thought it would be good and it tuned out for me different. Now I'm trying to sell it and move on.
I started using windows 8 and I knew my next tablet device would have it 8 on it. I like everything about it. I think it's the better OS for me and my situation. I could go on an on bashing Asus, but why? I've found what works best for me. But that's just me...
I owned a Galaxy Tab 7" and a PlayBook prior to getting the Prime, and I'm considering the Nexus, but I found the 7" tabs to be too small for web browsing. Personally, I think the Galaxy Tab 8.9" is the best size.
Plus, it's another ASUS product. (My Prime's currently RMA'd to fix the rear camera issue).
I wish HTC had built the Nexus 7. The Nexus One was the best.

Would this be a good trade?

I have had my prime since early January with the dock, and while I do love it (have it unlocked with CM10 preview on it), after I got my new laptop, I haven't used it nearly at all. After seeing the new promo video for the Note 10.1, i have to say that I'm impressed, even though it is sped up. As a college student with a laptop already, I'm thinking that the Note 10.1 would be more useful/productive. My question is, would you think anyone would trade a brand new Note 10.1 for a 6-month old, unlocked prime with dock? And would that be a good trade? Thanks.

I don't think anyone would do that trade unless they themselves got the note & wasn't happy with it. Your best bet would be to sell the prime & use that money toward a note...IMO.

Also the Prime is plagued with issues.

Not a sweet deal to begin with. How would it make it sweeter?
Well, because the tab and dock were originally $650 and, even with the depreciated value of the tab, it is still quad core, unlocked, and has (most likely) double the memory, in addition to the dock coming with it, in exchange for a tab that is most likely going to be $500 or, if Samsung wants to compete with the cheaper tablets, maybe $450. That's why.

Trade a new tablet for an eight-month old tablet riddled with hardware issues?
You've got quite the sense of humor.

Ya might get a Note phone for that but Id go with the suggestion above and sell it and put the money towards the Note. I've got a LTE note with a tablet ROM on it and its great. I can do just about everything I can on my prime just ultra portable. Ya drop the DPI to 160 on the Note and its essentially a 5.3 inch tablet PC. just my opinion though

That's why.

The Note 10.1 will probably be more then that. It is also a quad-core, and has double the RAM that the Prime has. Note 10.1 has higher specs that the Prime.
Most people who want a tablet don't care about the dock.
Also the Prime has issues with it, which is almost basic knowledge. Hell, try to even sell it on Kijiji and you'll get a million questions asking about wifi etc issues with the Prime.
I guess it would be a good deal, but the question is...
Who is the one getting the good deal?
You or the person you are trading with?
Definitely not a sweet deal. I've had a hard time trying to sell my locked factory spec prime with 1 dead pixel for $300-ish (no dock).

Their price tag is $749.50 for the note 10.1 -- which may or may not be a good representation of the price when the rest of the retailers start selling it.

The real price should be announced at the Samsung conference on Aug 15th in NY.
Did you get it at Best Buy? If so, take it back under the manufacturer's warranty due to the wifi/gps issues and get a gift card towards the Note 10.1 when it comes out.
Otherwise, yeah....sell it and use the money towards the Note. I don't think anybody's gonna make that trade.
