Otter car dock mod!! - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Don’t know if this is where this goes or not but it’s about accessories..
So I have the Sprint car dock and it works great (even if it only launches the dock half the time). I went out and bought the Otterbox commuter case and I love it. The good news is YES the case does if in the dock…. The bad news is the flap that covers the UBS port does not. So I had two choices, one cut the rubber that protects the USB port off and risk all kinds of pocket lint and dust getting in there or modify the dock… SO
I modified the dock… all I did was take a Dremel (best tool ever) and cut away the plastic edge. Now you have to be careful because it would be easy to “slip” and cut into your USB port. Also the LED power light is right there so watch that too!!!
Here is what 10 minutes of work look like!!

I will sand it a little but I think it turned out great!!! Now I can use my case and dock!!! I would take a picture of the phone in the dock but the phone is all I have to take pictures at the moment lol.
Let me know what you think??

Well done, problem solved. Looks fine to me. And yes, dremels are awesome ! Dremels, 5 min epoxy, and duct tape. I can do anything!

indeed nice! I bought mine today and was thinking.. just a little more room and I could totally Dock my otter box! but, I thought I would just cut off the little flap to the Charge port. instead, You've inspired me!

Thanks guys. I did not want to hurt the case as I get way more use out of it then the dock. But with the usb cover out it actually covers up the cut on the dock so you don't see it anyways. Looks great!

You made the right decision.
When you have to mod something , you want to avoid reducing functionality if you can. Cutting the dock doesn't change its functionality (even if it didn't fit after the cutout) , while removing the USB cover removes a feature.

[Q] Dock and Cases

I wonder if I can plug my phone with case into the dock.
I have a otterbox commuter and impact.
Do they fit with the dock ? [I'm pretty sure that the commuter doesn't .. too big ]
I want to know so that i won't waste my money

not fit with otter and other case...
The only case I've heard of working is the Incipio Feather case. Maybe some relatively thin gel cases might work if you remove the "insert" from the dock.

I think the impact case will fit the dock if I remove the plastic cover on the top of the dock (but i'm not sure) ..
Did anybody try ?
Case-mate flex protection for the atrix allows splitting the lower side of the case in landscape so it fits in docking stations. Pictures follow in some minutes ...

Nice photo review sxg75, thanks for that and the link. The case looks great. I think that if they added the little stoppers that fit in the usb/hdmi and audio holes it would be perfect. Gonna get one anyway.
I have more than a few types of cases, none work that well with the docks. I can get the ones that I have to work. It isn't the best fit though...
Wow that looks great, a nice idea to get a case to work on a dock without modifying it - if you're ok with $30 price range.

Chipped price on TF. Send Back?

Wow what a great 24 hours as far as the ICS and Camera updates. Its almost a new tablet.......
My issue is the following. I received my Prime last Thursday from Best Buy. No issues really other than.....GPS. I don't know what happened but I saw that down by the dock mounts on the left side that the metal piece that lays above the connection and secures the glass is missing or broke. I have no other broken pieces or anything. I am post img a pic yes for advice if I should send it back or not. I probably should but geez it just is getting good lol.

I guess you meant chipped Piece. not Price
Omg lol send it back! Think about the resell value, dude
Yea, get it replaced.
If I'm looking at you're picture right then you are talking about the rubber pieces on either side of the dock connector?
Those need to come off to be able to use the dock.
There is a thin strip of metal right above the rubber pads and somehow that thin piece broke off. I'm getting an RMA. I was just being stupid.
Mr. Giggles: This based on many other threads I've seen you in. Why do you have to be such a jerk to everyone? Its easy to be mean but harder to be nice.
Thanks for the input.

Thin strip of plastic to be precise sir. I would be surprised if they actually replace this under RMA, it does kinda look like you were just a bit rough with it yourself.
Swear to goodness I didn't do a thing to it. I've had it since last Thursday. I guess it's form and the way things sort of roll under the bezel made me not notice it. I couldn't figure out why my screen was a little loose. Then I found this. I guess it is what it is. I got the RMA and spoke to Asus and told them about light bleed and GPS along with screen and crack. I'm just gonna hope for the best. However, no, I never dropped it.

Body Glove Drop Suit Case

Just wanted to throw out there that this case fits well and seems to be pretty high quality. I like the extra grip on the sides and it isn't bulky. It's a thin cases about like a tpu or silicone, but made from stiffer material, snaps on pretty snuggly. Anyway, with the very small selection out there, just wanted to mention that this case is decent if you want something small and it does still work on the wireless charger.
I got mine at Amazon because it was cheaper $15-$16 and had free shipping. But their picture doesn't offer much detail.

I wonder if the textured inside will leave marks on the back of the phone like the Verizon tpu

Thanks for the quick review. I just hesitantly ordered one off ebay, but after this and a quick YT video about it, I feel a little better about it.

It does leave a mark. The button on top makes it very easy press the power/lock key, but on the whole makes it easier to press all the external buttons.
This case is excellent. Makes buttons EASY and has nice lip for screen. Very good protection and doesn't add much mass . Seriously I'm very happy....and surprised

case fits and feels great. Only two gripes are as mentioned above the case does leave marks and when texting in landscape mode I tend to hit the power button accidently pretty often. May be just how I place my hands but I find myself hitting it alot

Project s view kickstand

We Since I can't find an s view cover with Kickstand that isnt bulky. I decided to mod one. Found a old seideo case with Kickstand for my evo 3d and dremmeled off the Kickstand and put in in my cheap eBay cover. Also removed the IC chip off my knock off one and put it in the eBay one for full s view with the advantage of a Kickstand.
1. Dremmel off the kick stand from evo 3d case.
2. Make sure edges are straight.
3. Lay on ebay s view battery cover and Mark with tape where to cut.
4. Dremmel the hole
5. Rough off the edges on Kickstand and hole so glue will stick better.
6. Add glue to sides of kick stand and place inside hole from back side out.
7. Wait to completely cure.

Very nice. Will it stand in portrait mode also? Looks like it might be a tad low to support that. Just curious
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
Still letting it cure but i did eye it before I cut the hole and it seems like it would stand in portrait where it's at. I'll test and post picture in about an hour
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Here's another advantage IMO as i can use the flip cover as support for the stand when i have it in something soft where normally the kickstand would dig in to my blanket
It's not as stable on portrait which is ok as I really needed it more in landscape for watching videos. A much better kick stand that would be more stable in portrait would be this one below. I had something similar on my note 2. Maybe a next project.

The Cheapest (in more ways than one), functional Qi desktop stand

A while back I got one of these really cheap desktop phone stands given to me. It's actually very sturdy, but I didn't have much use for it, so it went into a box of misc. stuff in the closet.

More recently I picked up an inexpensive wireless charging puck that works quite well
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F6SPZWO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So I wondered if I could stick the puck to the back of the stand, and make a poor man's Tylt Vu charging stand. Sadly, the answer was no. The thickness of the plexiglass stand, added to the case for the charging puck, was too great for the Qi coils to bridge. But, I thought, what if I remove the thickness of the puck's case, and put the charging coil directly on the back of the plexi stand? So I disassembled the puck, and low and behold, that worked just fine.
Not wanting to give up the puck, I decided to order another. Being cheap, I saw a bunch of similar looking circular pucks for an even lower price, and thought they're probably the same thing. So I ordered one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/MuchBuy-Wirel...638&sr=1-11&keywords=docooler+qi+charging+pad
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Well, it's not the same. It's definitely cheaper than the PowerBot, but it worked fine, so I took it apart. Combined with the freebie stand, I bring you..... FrankenCharger. Ugly as sin, but it works, and a total outlay of about $10 can't be beat. Similar looking pucks are available from ebay for $3 to $4 bucks.
The bumpers that the phone rests on are soft plastic, and are extras from kitchen cabinets, intended to keep the cabinet doors from slamming closed. I may try to figure out a better way to hold it together than electrical tape, but there's something honestly cheap about that solution that appeals to me.
Here's a shot of the back, and sitting next to my work PC. I may stick some thin cork dots, or something similar, on the bottom to keep it from sliding around, but where it's located it's atually pretty stable.
nice i did something similar, but i also use a laser cut, its good to have one
