Nexus 7 (Google Tablet) Announced - No micro sd slot - Google TV also released - HTC EVO 3D

https://www.google.com/nexus/#/7
lack of micro sd really sucks since paying $50 for 8GB of extra space could get me a 64GB microsd...

I agree - plus a regular SD-slot would make it really useful for photographers and general data upload to the cloud. Oh well, I ponied up for the 16GB version anyway (actually two of them).

I'd party that extra 50 just to make it easier to load up apps and to have the extra storage for the so many things Android that still won't work properly with a SDHC card. Then still spend that $50 for a 64 GB SDXC card. But without it I doubt I'd buy either version of the tablet.

usb adapter
I thinking of using a micro usb to flash stick adapter to put my media content on for trips, the 16gb internal memory should hopefully be sufficient for a few apps and large games.

16GB is sufficient but barely

Google must have decided that cloud storage and streaming is the future or......., they are encouraging people to root there phones and use Wifi Tether:laugh:

8 & 16 would be great if it = exactly the amount of user accessable space available.
In reality we have 5.8xGB & 12.8xGB est storage.
This really hurts the gaming & app installs big-time. Music & Photos should be ok from the Cloud.

Wow....literally just was about to hit "Complete your purchase" when I actually started to do more research on it....
$230 (after tax S&H...) for an 8GB tablet w/ no MicroSDHC or MicroSDXC?? Definitely going to have to sleep on this one first.
But, my god, that thing is made by Asus, Nvidia Quad-Core, 4.1 Android Jelly Bean!
$230 is not bad....Somebody convince me to buy it!!
EDIT: But where oh where will I put my many episodes of Star Trek? MacGyver? Stargate SG-1? I can't access that content when I have no internet available at work....

Its a mental challenge really:
Just think, $230 total is just $20 shy of the 16GB at $250 but that in reality + shipping could be $280.

No sd card slot has prevented me from owning a nexus device.... That is a deal breaker for me! Once they get that, I'm onboard

amazon with their private marketplace and semi-forked os is damaging google sales.
this tablet its intended as a replacement for the kindle fire - if you were intrested in buying a kindle fire this is better in any possible way and cost the same.
if you wanted to buy a more generic tablet, this is expressly built so the other units remain actractive even if they cost more as google dont want to cannibalize its partners sales.
basically its a "**** you, amazon" gift from google.

Hear hear , I say, class 10 32gb Samsung micro sdhc is safe if I drop my phone in a toilet, if It gets to close to a high power magnet, its er....... I can't remember but the packaging made it out to be pretty much indestructible, and memory cards break on me all the time, all types and prices , and I gotta say its been awesome never a problem, so no micro sd, is a real let down, and I think I'm gonna swing towards the s3 and keep the EVO, as the missus is happy with her iPhone

When will these manufactures learn that expandable memory is a must? We don't always have access to WiFi to use the cloud. This greatly limits when and where we can use their products. Why do they seem hell bent on pushing the cloud on us. Yes its nice to have online storage but when your not near WiFi it makes it useless.

Why get a 64gb model?

I think this is a no brainer really. a 64gb micro SD card is like what $200+, to get 96gb on a 32gb model would be quite expensive, but if you get a 64gb model and then add a 32gb card, it would work out less.
and if you have a lot of full hi-def movies on a tablet, to take full advantage of the hi-res screen, you won't fit many films on a 32gb card.
Gobs of media files - music and pdf manuals largely. While wifi coverage grows daily, I'm not in a major metropolitan area so finding coverage can be a challenge. The cloud is great - if you can get at it.

Why do people buy 32gb?
I ordered the 64GB version because I can, I say it's better with to much space then to little. And I don't want to come in that position that I don't have enough space, don't like when I get limited because of the hardware.
videos and music is the main use. I first thought on to buy the 32GB + MicroSD card, but with MicroSD you are limited to 4GB files and that is not good when most of the movies are bigger then 4GB. (can be wrong about this)
And was there something wrong with this thread?

[Q] Why 64GB?
B/C $100 for double the disk space is a good deal.... and I'm not constrained by my budget... so why wouldn't I get it?
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
If you need to have 96 gb or more its better. It depends on what your using it for. Those who are buying 32gb I think have a very specific use in mind and know how much space they need or are just going to use it as a media consumption device.
Those that are buying the 64gb version probably fit in 3 camps:
1) can afford the space so why not?
2) are using it for work and know/need/want to make sure that they have all of their materials at hand if they have no connectivity (I need geo maps, research papers, my own work, and entertainment on the device.) and don't want to lug or power a portable device.
3) Commuters who want to have access to a large selection of media on the device.
I personally would love to have a 128gb chip or a few of them and dump my bulky external drive. Though I think their price is a little high yet. 1tb would give me wet dreams. (my current ext hd)
Though I do amit that even if I didn't think I had the need for 64gb I would have bought it as you can never add more to the device itself. Say if you buy 32gb and need 128 your spending more than if you bought 64gb and 64gb chip. Barring the fact that you carry a collection of chips.
Cheers!
I'm just trying to think of whether I would be able to make use of the extra space. I don't think "why not?" or "because I can" are good reasons
I feel like maybe there are some useful/cool things I could do with the prime if I had extra space, but I'm still not sure what that is. I only have like ~8 gigs of music. I don't feel like I need a large media library on my device, since I'll know the 1 or 2 things I want to watch at any given time.
Using it as a general storage device might be interesting though.

Sounds like you might be better with a 32gb version then. Just think of all you would want to put on it get an estimated size then how close are you to 32gb if you break it I would buy the 64gb if you don't come close a 32 with an sdhc for expansion would be good I think.
I also think because I can can be a valid reason, think of it like this at the price the difference is not much for double the storage. Personally being a dink(double income no kids) the extra cost is nothing but the cost of not buying what I need can be the difference between having a useful device with no extra work to a useful device that I have to manage what sdhc cards have want info, loaded, and hope I don't loose the other cards. Just dont forget the oppurnity cost of the device.
I don't get why people think $100 extra is a fair deal for the 64GB.
An Samsung 32GB Class 10 card is €30 in Holland, while we pay €100 extra for the 64GB version.
Because I need more than 128gb I think a >=96gb chip is more than 100? And 100$ just is not that much to me.
Well future devices will have up to 128GB of flash storage. It was just released a couple weeks back or so that they finally made it possible.

Do you stream or do you store? Storing music, even if you have a large library, doesn't chew up tons of storage. Video, especially high-profile, does. Plex and PlayOn pretty much eliminate the need to store video locally. I only store stuff when I know I'm going to be on long plane flights without Wi-Fi.
I've got about 2K Rhapsody downloads on my 32GB and a couple of local MKV videos and am using less than half the storage. More is always better and once you buy it you can't go back but it's also kind of stupid to piss money away (no matter how much you claim to have) on something you're not going to use. And it looks like January for the 64GB's so that's something to consider too.
I'm the one who created the other thread. I finally decided for the 64GB for the following reasons:
-I can (i mean, it's not a real effort to pay the extra)
-Now i don't see the real need for the 64Gb, but i don't know if i will need them in the time i have it, as it's my first tablet. Having the 64Gb means if in the future i need the extra storage, i will have it. Having the 32Gb would mean the need to buy extra microSD cards.
-I travel a lot, and sometimes for long time. SD cards are fine, but internal storage means faster reads and less problems (like forgetting the sd or having it lost/broken for any reason)
-I plan on using it for a little gaming too, if the games start to need more space, i will already have it and not depend on the sd card. I hate having to watch which apps I can have or not have due to space in my Nexus One.
-I have a dSLR so i'd like to use it too for pic displaying and very basic editing if needed (with the dock + sd cards). This pics are quite huge (10mb each, ~30mb if shot in raw), so moving a few of them to the internal storage (for using without the dock) would be quite space consuming.
-Having a 32gb microsd card means 96gb instead of 64, which further expands this capabilities.
I can't depend either on music/video streaming. Most music I like isn't in cloud services and Google Music isn't available in Spain. My internet connection is pretty bad, and the router is even worse, with ocasional and random wifi disconnections.
With all this in mind, i just prefer spending a few more € on the 64gb and not fall short in some weeks.
Oh, i forgot the main reason. To stand up in the top of the mountain and laugh at the 32gb people

It's fantastic that you both have the resources. It's incredibly ostentatious that, for whatever reason, you feel the need to share it with others that may not be in your position. Between this and the post in the BB thread where someone's order got canceled because of a debit card issue and some schmuck posted "I don't need to worry, my credit card has no limit" I'd say there's a lot of people on this forum who need to validate themselves.

That's way out of the reason i posted it. The OP is asking for reasons to get a 64 gb model over a 32gb one. Pricing is one of the possible reasons so I included it in the list just because it was an issue i considered while asking myself the same question, so it might be relevant to the OP. If i were just to try to show how proud i am of the money i have, i would remove the parenthesis (where i state that if getting the 64gb is an effort the OP should consider the 32Gb instead). The last sentence was a joke that someone posted on my the thread i created for this same reason and i liked and copied it here. You can check it if you want at the link someone posted in this thread.
I would buy the 64gb version due to the fact that on Honeycomb you can not move apps to the sd card and maybe this will change with ICS so with games taking up a lot of space the extra memory would be nice.

Got mine on Amazon for a little less (real little) and free shipping ( http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-32GB-...JYCY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325739855&sr=8-1 ).
The SanDisk Class 4 was the go-to card for the NC (there's a chart floating around about r/w speed for different classes, sizes, and brands. Anything above a Class 4 is not recommended for this device (IMO) -- due to the performance-to-dollar ratio of the higher priced cards.

My comment was in reference to the cost/benefit of the steep performance vs. cost slope of investing in higher class cards.
My friend and I bought a Class 10 32 gig for only $39. I personally do not like Sandisk as a brand and was pleased to not buy their product, but that is just my taste.
Class 10 32gig that was rated well cost me about $50.

yea the one you linked to has sales tax which puts it like 20 cents below the price of newegg lol thanks for your opinion though
EDIT: oops, forgot to actually check and it doesn't have any sales tax! wow i actually just might get it from amazon then, even if it might take a bit longer... newegg(4-7 business days) vs amazon (5-8 business days) lol...
EDIT2: the link you provided, the pic of the card doesn't say what class it is and apparently there is a "newer" model here: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-micro...M-032G/dp/B004G60AD6/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
surprisingly enough, its actually cheaper than the one you provided by like 20 cents after shipping and tax are calculated... yea the "newer" one needs shipping, but still no tax which is good...

Don't you think the onboard flash controller would be a limiting factor in the performance of that card? If a Class 4/6's performance on the Nook Tablet is near equal to the performance of a Class 10 on the Nook Tablet then wouldn't you think that the top end performance of the onboard flash controller is 6MB/s?
Just saying, a faster card may not be better, no matter how fast, or how much it cost if the onboard technology simply can't keep up it'll just work like a slower card.
Look at Micro Center's prices. They are a good gauge. Be careful buying ones off ebay, there are folks selling counterfeit ones.

I like to think that I'm thinking ahead. these were designed specifically with tablets and phones in mind. Right now I'm running a class 6 8gb I bought for my G1 originally. My phone is a shift, and I have a nook tablet in the way also. Once the tablet is fully and completely rooted and running cm9, it will be my primary android device for my work. The 8gb class 6 will go back to being my phones storage. As a side note, I have a 16gb class 4 card also. I could clearly see a difference running it. My phone would choke and sometimes corrupt the images when transferring numerous pictures at once via USB cable to my PC. Never had this problem before or after with the 8gb c6 card.
And, if nothing else ... I spent 30 bucks for a cool ass blue stripe! Lol.

I'm still going for the 10.1" 1920x1080 Transformer Pad Infinity, but for people that like a 7" ( ) can go for the nexus tab.
tegra 3, fail.
an s4 silicon chipset with corresponding GPU would have been nice. exynos, not really "cutting edge" by todays performance standards.
I disagree. Tegra 3 and nvidia are way ahead it terms of developer support. That's why there are so many tegra 3 titles. And at the $200 price point this makes the kindle fire look, well, horrible. I am very pleased with the original specs. Yes krait may have been better but nvidia goes out of its way to lower price points and gets it soc in as many devices as possible. If you want something that has all the greatest hardware then u have to put out the $$$. At $200 I know the android community will flock to it and I hope consumers will to. All in all, I will get one and I hope the 7inch factor will be as useful as I think.

I can't comprehend why Google is being so stupid with their Nexus lineup, especially tablets. I would absolutely love to use one of these on vacations/business trips with an HDMI cable to take my media with me and still watch them on a TV. I want to fill this thing up with tv shows and movies (and even music if possible) but it seems like they don't give a crap. Not including a microsd card is a freaking deal breaker every damn time.
Not to change the subject, but if we do get multiple Nexus phones from the big manufacturers later this year.. and not a single one of them has a microsd card.. I'm going to pull my hair out and scream. haha

I'm going to pull my hair out and scream. haha

well then this probably isnt the tab for you. i dont think thats what they are going for. as far as the nexus devices go isnt like each major manufacturer making one? so it'll kind be up to them to include an sd card slot or not unless google requires them to exclude it.

That's what I am afraid of. They've skimped on the last two Nexus phones. The least they could do is offer 32gb standard. The GSM Galaxy Nexus has 16gb while the CDMA versions both have 32gb.
I would prefer to go Nexus with my next phone and tablet, but Google's got to get their head out of their ass first. It's way too early to rely on the cloud for all of your media needs - especially on a tablet that is wifi only. It's asinine.
Do they have a microSD slot?
If they do, I don't see what the problem with only 8GB is. They did that so you could have a nice tablet with good specs at the price of $200. If you want more storage, just pay the $50 for a 64GB micro sd card. A 64GB variant of the tablet would probably cost $300 anyway so you'd be getting a better deal than if it was already 64GB.
As for relying on cloud storage, I hate how we're being forced to do that. I ****ing hate cloud storage since streaming with sprint's 3G is slow as hell and it wouldn't be adequate for a tablet. Cloud storage should only become a norm when we have mobile satellite internet or some sort of internet that's fast and everywhere.

I disagree. Tegra 3 and nvidia are way behind it terms of developer support. That's why there are so few ics tegra 2 roms and all of them suck. Pumping funds in game developers to make titles exclusive is not what I would call dev support. But withholding drivers and disclosing specs is exactly what I would call neglect the devs.
The guys over at Linux aren't very fond of Nvidia. Linus Trovalds (creator of Linux) says "NVIDIA has been the single worst company we've ever dealt with!" and gives a big middle finger to the company on camera.
Basically, Nvidia is making tons of money off of multiple open source linux platforms without giving anything back to the open source community.

I know its already been replied to, but I wanted to reiterate this. I already did buy the 64GB card and I LOVE it. I can store as much crap as I want. I've watched an entire season of Archer on planes to/from Denver and in a hotel there while on business. I basically want to be able to load a tablet up and not have to worry about running out of new stuff to watch or listen to. I was able to do that with my old Nook Color that ran CM7 before I sold it on ebay. To not be able to do something so simple on the pure Google tablet (which will run circles around any Nook or Kindle) is just not right. Hopefully the leaked information is incomplete or inaccurate and it does have a microsd slot.
If they botch this then I will probably look to get an Asus tablet since it only took them about a month to bump the Transformer Prime up to ICS and the OG Transformer wasn't very far along after that. Google better do something amazing tomorrow if they want my $ -- and trust me I've been dying to give it to them for a while now. haha
So, what about USB otg support? Maybe that will solve storage problems.
Anyone got information bout that?

OK so I got around to thinking about this "problem" of not having microsd slots on new devices, and I was wondering if anyone out there makes an accessory that attaches to the charger and has a card reader on it. Basically an external card reader. It wouldn't be the fastest for transferring files I'm sure, but it's better than giving up all the microsd cards my family has acquired.
I did some Googling and found this thing on Amazon -- does anyone know if it does what I described above? I can't tell if its meant for use with actual phones/tablets or just the computer.
Or if anyone knows of a product that does exist and can provide a link (or even a name) that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

[Q] Will you buy the Nexus 10 {POLL}

Will you buy the nexus 10? Vote in the poll!
At this point in time I really have no use for a device like this, considering that I already have a Nexus 7. When I do buy a tablet it will most likely be a Windows 8 Pro laptop/tablet hybrid. Something that I can get work done on when I need to work, and consume media on when I want to consume media. It is an attractive option though.

I agree! I have a nexus 7 Rocking AOKP rom and am happy, I use it for college and on the go work, So the downfall with the nexus is its sometimes cramped keyboard

Been waiting on this since I returned my TF700 (and the Prime before that). IMO the only missing thing is a microSD port, but I can live with that.
I'm going to wait a little bit, make sure Samsung are releasing proper sources for the Exynos, and that CyanogenMod will work on it.

Is is going to be $399 for the 16 GB Wifi Model and $499 for the 32 GB Wifi Model.
Absolutely. After spending some time with a loaner N7 a few months ago, the N10 is exactly what I've been holding out for.
My enthusiasm is almost Apple-esque.
I don't like the look of it so no.
take my money nao!!!
I was excited to see the specs or the Nexus 10, but the price for me is hard to justify. I know the 300ppi screen would be beautiful, but I would only really use that for movies and I am usually watching movies on my pc anyway. I have a tf201 right now and I only use it for movies and reading(which is a bear sometimes). Personally I think I will pick up a new nexus 7 32gb model. Just my opinion.
on the fence. On the one hand the specs are great. On the other, I think they totally missed the mark on design on both the tablet and the official cover. I am no apple fan boy at all, and constantly belittle many of their practices. Their hardware design is king though, in the tiny details. This cover with the back attachment looking bit is not clean looking, and the slightly rounded off sides to the tablet are a bad choice :imo:
The nexus 7 on the other hand is a beautiful design. Will have to play with both side by side and see which is for me. hdmi out is nice too...

i wonder how much they would of increase the price if it did have a sd card reader ...
still new to android pure google but have they made them with sd cards before or goolge likes to roll like iphone/ipad/ipod with no sd slots ?

Edit.
Never mind I don't think it's micro usb.

Is an extra $100 worth 16gb

About to order the N9. And I am getting pretty sick of shelling out a ton of extra cash for a little extra storage. I can get a 16gb SD card for like $10 from amazon. For $100 I can get a 160gb ssd for my computer. What makes these manufacturers think that it justified to add $100 to the price of a device for such little extra storage.
Now I will probably just go with the 16gb model as I only really plan on using it at home. I can smb or WiFi transfer anything I need. Also there are OTG solutions out there now that are very reason ably priced.
What are your thoughts?
I had a lot of similiar thoughts but ended up pre ordering the 16gb.. And im just going to buy the corsair voyager go 64gb for media.

I ended up getting the 32GB. But I thought the price is not bad due to the build quality and the specs of the device. Yes the storage is a bit disappointing but I believe this is a premium tablet. I ended up also getting this OTG USB Drive to expand the storage and thought would be great to transfer files from the phone to the tablet.

Apple set this standard on the original iPad and people bought it. Stupid fanboys are to blame, I guess. Since you can't upgrade the storage, you're more likely to go with the higher storage model, and OEMs will gouge you.
Notice that devices with external SD storage, the models with higher internal storage are a seriously tough sell. Ask any rep. I know for a fact that Samsung doesn't even releases its high storage models in all markets.

That does make sense. If it had an SD card slot I wouldn't even consider the 32gb model.
And I went ahead and ordered the 16gb model. $100 at this time is worth it for the minor inconvenience of having to use external storage every once in a while.
Considering both my N7s were running at 20+gb used it's worth the extra money to me.. A lot of people rely on cloud storage and don't need the extra space. If they would have offered a 64gb for $200 more I would have ordered that one but instead went with 32gb.

Have you ever used a tablet with one of those things protruding a few cm from it? Not worried the extended leverage could kill your charging port (no wifi charging!) if the microsd gets bumped?

I am not worried. One thing is it will only be in to copy stuff over, not keeping it in the whole time, two there is not much else options besides getting the otg cable but I like this way better

Its actually an extra $80 for another 16gb, not $100.
That makes the Nexus 9 32gb cheaper than the Nexus 10 32gb.

I had ordered the 16gb from amazon but canceled due to possible supply issues. Then as I was reading xda someone mentioned roms and backups and I remembered having to move backups to pc before flashing a new rom with my phone...
I'm not much of a media person but roms/browsing/ingress primarily. Plus since I probably won't buy a new tablet in 2015 my Google play order is for the 32gb.
Consering convenience factors (doesn't take up external space/more software friendly/better IO/ doesn't use your usb port) I think it is worth it.
