[How-To] How to install custom roms/TWRP without root on 1.22.651.3 - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Ok so I could not wait for the root to come out and I could not for the life of me figure out how to install a custom rom without first rooting your EVO LTE first. But I was randomly doing stuff and I figured out how to install a custom recovery onto a phone that has 1.22.651.3.
Edit: This method seems to get rid of the "This build is for development purposes only.
Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's written permission.
Failure to comply may lead to legal action." text. I am looking into this. my device is S-ON not S-OFF so this might be something.
Before you can do this you need to have an unlocked bootloader.
1. Download this file http://www.mediafire.com/?h0qfd9idc6h3c03
2. Place the file into where your android sdk folder is.
3. Put your phone into bootloader mode.
4. Click Fastboot and make sure your device is in FastUSB mode.
5. Open command prompt on your computer.
6. In command prompt locate the folder where you put the image in for me its "cd c:\android-sdk-windows
7. Type in "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.1-jewel.img"
8. Hit enter.
The image should be pushed onto your device and TWRP should now be installed.

You should mention that you need to be at least HTC DEV Unlocked in order to install a custom recovery, a working Link, and proper way to push a file.

Good Idea! I will edit my post. Thanks!

Root will always be possible thanks to HTCdev. Just unlock and flash recovery.

I will post a link to the file. Can you give me a little more detail? Were you able to push the image to the phone? Did it get pushed to the device and nothing happened?
Also I have noticed that doing this gets rid of the "This build is for development purposes only.
Do not distribute outside of HTC without HTC's written permission.
Failure to comply may lead to legal action."
It could be the rom I am using that did it. Not sure.... I will look into it.....

I honestly had no idea that even existed. I only go on XDA xD. I guess Iwill just get my posted deleted then. But what was not mentioned in that post was about that HTC DEV text that appears when you unlock the bootloader. From what I understand the only way to get rid of that is through S-OFF but I never did S-OFF and the text is not appearing on my phone. This is very mystifying.

Honestly the text doesn't bother me and don't delete the post just update it to correct information some people are lazy and don't read the thread and post or even do a simple search I admit I've done that but it's also been clear to me people just take it as is so just update with simpler instructions dude like go here and after update here after flashing a rom for some reason it would only update after I flashed a rom fyi

[Recovery]HoneyComb Recovery For HTC View 4G

Just for New Hboot and you must go htcdev.com to unlock your Hboot
enjoy!
thanks for sharing. I did it on my view , really great
Does this specifically unlock the updated HTC View on Honeycomb?
Thanks
I just did this process on my View. I had not previously rooted and took the Honeycomb OTA update, after I was done unlocking the bootloader it reset my whole system to stock(with HC) I wasn't expecting it to do that, but I guess I am now unlocked and ready to root.
Sort of, you have to remember that you won't able to flash radios at all or flash kernels from recovery this way. You'll have to flash kernels over fastboot or from a booted android system.
Also unless the OP can come back with complete details of this recovery I recommened not flashing it, but extracting the one in the mini-ruu in the S-OFF thread. I see a couple of options in there which either won't work or could be incredibly destructive and I don't know if this recovery will support off-mode charging. I don't want people to get stuck in "battery brick" status, that is not fun.
Anyone get this when trying to unlock?? It doesn't give me an error code so I don't know exactly what went wrong.
We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary.

nearly every time I've seen someone get that it's because they pasted the wrong information into the webpage, either too much or too little text,it has to be exactly what the instructions say to copy and paste.

Put the file in the root of your SD card
connect via usb
command > adb reboot bootloader
select fastboot
it will ask if you want to upgrade, select yes.
done.
I couldnt get the key combo to work to force the bootloader so I had to go via adb.

You need to flash the kernel separately. Grab boot.img installer or use fastboot. Reboot the phone and hold power+volume down to get into the bootloader, then select recovery. I'm not familiar with boot.img installer but with fastboot you extract the boot.img from the rom and place it in the adb folder and with the phone in fastboot and in the terminal type fastboot flash boot boot.img

You were trying to run android debug commands in hboot and you fixed it with a stock kernel? Because that's what my post is referring to
If fastboot and adb don't see your device, make sure you have JAVA installed. That's what confounded me, initially.

Come to think of it, probably. I might have been in HBoot, and not in Fastboot... Good call.

That's because you have to change the path of where your cmd prompt is looking. If you haven't changed it then it wont find adb inside of sdk. change the pathway so it looks inside SDK then looks inside the tools folder or whatever folder contains the adb.exe. After its changed correctly it will find adb

[Q] need help! 1.19 unlocked and rooted, still cant install anything

This is my first post so sorry if what I ask is stupid or something. I have searched everywhere and cannot find anything that is current enough to help me. I have hboot 1.19 and my software version is 2.13.651.1 710RD. I'm unlocked, rooted and also have TWRP recovery and I'm s-on. When I rooted my phone it also gave me SuperSU. I'm super lost now because I can't flash any ROMs to my phone. I've tried the charmeleon ROM and also the tranquility ROM but when TWRP is at the end of the Installing process it says that it failed and that there is no md5 or something like that.
what am I doing wrong?

Just disable MD5 check in TWRP, that should fix it. You do want to verify your MD5 matches in something like ES File Explorer. If you don't that will cause many other problems.

Well yes but the Rom will still install without errors. Go to the TeamWin website and download it from there. Grab the zip and rename it and place it on your external sd and boot to bootloader. It will install and then reboot but if you don't have a working Rom remove the sd afterward otherwise you can get stuck in a loop. Do not place it on internal if you don't have a working Rom. The other ways to install would be to use goo manager to install or flash the recovery in fastboot

Alright i'll give this a try, but what zip am i supposed to download and rename? I already have the latest version of TWRP on my phone.
You can check the md5 using a file explorer. Longpress on file and select properties, then compare to where you downloaded the ROM from. If s-on, you'll have to pull the boot.IMG from the ROM zip and fastboot flash from cmd or use flash image GUI app from your phone if you can boot.
Also, I think the disable md5 check in TWRP is under settings.

Internal storage on my phone is fried - can't mount anything. PC doesn't find it. RUU is out of date or would possibly work. I'm using windows 7 and having a very scary ride because the phone won't show up with anything except the SD card - which would be awesome and let me flash the new CM10 - but unfortunately when I go to install it, I get "unable to mount SD card" as a perpetual error message. Even the 3.15 RUU is out of date, also, and though I went through the rooting process and unlocked the device thru HTC's website, I have version 3.16 and the RUU tells me to get the correct RUU and try again. I have to go to work now, if anybody else has been through the special hell I'm trying to deal with please post something, anything, to get my windows able to find my phone, or my drive (internal) to mount to the pc or anything! This looks like a brick (and I've never screwed anything up this bad before )
Boot to twrp and mount storage, then plug into computer. Windows will recognize that it's corrupt and give you the choice to format it.
I still have S-ON. *facepalm*
How can I achieve S-OFF status so that the ROM, which I more or less WAS able to flash using your advice, will be able to quit boot looping and actually work?
So much fail yesterday! that's what I get for trying to quit smoking.... :cyclops:

I have Ubuntu 64 bit lol. ****ing trolls killed my windows dreams. Got it about 40% booted earlier - said Android is Upgrading and ran through the apps, then died on me and never got that far again. I'm not 100% sure that S-ON is my only issue - this phone has had problems since day 1 power cycling and a few other strange issues, I'm probably going to just get a warranty replacement.

I'm not 100% sure that S-ON is my only issue - this phone has had problems since day 1 power cycling and a few other strange issues, I'm probably going to just get a warranty replacement.

Definitely sounds like you might have issues. Won't hurt to take it in-just make sure you take it to a reputable Sprint repair center.

Got it done. Waited about a week or so to clear my head - then, starting with the unlock bootloader, I used dirtyracun to basically complete the whole process. Was missing a step on babyracun and it wasn't working because of that.

[RECOVERY] TWRP touch recovery v2.6.3.3

Key Features:
Ability to save custom recovery settings
Default partitions to back up
Default zip folder location
Default color theme (lots to choose from) (Thanks to ffolkes!)
Default Time Zone (for more accurate time stamps)
Zip Signature Verification
Zip md5 Verification (looks for file with zipname.zip.md5)
Ability to flash multiple zips in one go
Ability to select which individual partitions to backup, and restore.
Ability to choose compression or no compression backups.
Compression takes longer of course, but you save roughly half the space. EVO3D's stock system uncompressed is ~800mb, 380mb compressed. You choose.
Ability to auto restore GAPPS on zip flash (for CM based ROMS)
Ability to auto reboot after successful flashes (for the lazy)
Some devices utilize their capacitive buttons in recovery.
Home - Main Menu
Menu - Advanced Menu
Back - Up a Menu Level
Search - Select Current Selection
Battery Level and Timestamp (Better safe than sorry)
HTC Dumlock Instructions:
Install the build of TWRP using your method of choice, but you must actually flash TWRP to recovery. No fastboot booting it. We need it in recovery so that this build of TWRP will be flashed to your boot. This new build of TWRP has features in it to easily restore your original boot.
Reboot into recovery.
Make a backup of your phone.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock. (If you don't see HTC Dumlock then you need to remove any custom TWRP theme that you might be using.)
Tap Install HTC Dumlock. This will install the app and binaries needed to make everything work nicely.
Reboot your device.
Find and open the HTC Dumlock app.
If/when prompted, give the app root (SuperUser) permissions.
Tap the Execute HTC Dumlock button.
Wait patiently for a couple of minutes. It takes a little while.
If your device doesn't reboot automatically, reboot it manually. Reboot it normally. DO NOT reboot it to recovery.
You should now be in your recovery, but your recovery is flashed into boot.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock.
Tap Restore Original Boot.
Use your recovery like normal. Flash a new kernel. Restore a backup with a different kernel. Do whatever you please!
Consider donating!
Note, you must repeat steps 8 through 17 EVERY TIME you need to flash boot.
Installation:
Unlock bootloader at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
Make sure fastboot is unchecked in power options and turn phone completely off
Boot into HBOOT then Fastboot
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot erase cache"
From fastboot. Use command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"

Go unlock your bootloader. Then inside of TWRP it should detect that your not rooted and automatically root . If it doesn't prompt you. There are two links in the OP that you flash in recovery that will give you root.

Ok to make sure I understand you install the twrp attached and install the Dumlock and this will allow us to flash the boot.img in twrp and not through fastboot?

Coming from samsung devices, all this fastboot stuff and HTC Dumlock is super confusing.. I'm rooted and running TWRP, but I'm certainly not comfortable with flashing another ROM and kernel yet. Thanks for the thread though, I extremely appreciate you work and time!:good:
Edit: Do I follow these exact steps to flash a full ROM zip with a non-stock kernel as part of it, or are there extra steps.. Really hate sounding like a noob, just do not want to do something dumb..

The international roms have a script in them that flashes the kernel with the Rom. No need to fastboot or anything like that.

Make sure your phone is on Fastboot and not HBOOT and it's plugged in good.
Nice job! This is really tempting me as I try to hold out for the Galaxy S4. Your making it very hard for me not to go buy this

Problem with TWRP. PLEASE HELP!

So i bought this HTC EVO 4G LTE off ebay, well it has a huge problem that the seller did not tell me about. It has somehing called TWRP installed and I cannot do anything with this phone.

You're rooted. Run RUU tool to unroot and go back to complete stock. TWRP is the recovery menu and the gateway to flashing new roms and kernels etc.

Okay so i downloaded and unzipped, The instructions on the thread are very vague
So I think i need to use a backdoor or something cause I can't get my phone to boot into android
Quote:
Q: But what if I can't get into Android?? Surely there is something I can do!?
A: Yes, I designed a "backdoor" to allow you into VipeRUU. However, BE CAREFUL! This skips important checks that VipeRUU does when it start (most importantly, if your phone really is an EVO 4G LTE!) but it will allow you to do this procedure from the bootloader. All you have to do is create a text file in the "files" folder called "bypass.txt" and then start the program. You'll be alerted with a few warnings when doing this.
Also do I need to have the phone plugged into the computer or something. I am so sorry but I am very lost

I've never done this process myself, but I'll do my best to help you.
First: reboot into your bootloader, Hold down power key with volume down key until it reboots into the screen where you listed all that information. It should have a white bacground.
Second: Naviagte to fastboot and hit the pwoerkey
Third: Connect computer to phone with usb
Fourth: create a blank bypass.txt file and place into the file named "file" from the zip you downloaded.
Fifth: Run ViperRUU and select whichever option you need.

Are you running windows? Open up a command prompt and try to get su access through fastboot. You may not have high enough privleges. Also, do you have HTC drivers installed? Once you're inside the fastboot menu, don't touch anything. The reading on the top should say "Fastboot USB"

Here is the link to the latest RUU I wouldn't mess with VipeRUU if you are not sure what you are doing.

Do what BD619 says. I had hoped ViperRUU would work, but the stock HTC one is much easier to use and operate. Also I usually use Ubuntu in these situations due to how much easier it is to work things in Terminal than it is to use Window's command prompt. Just a thought in case you ever need to do something fastboot related in the future.

VipeRUU will work fine but he's still new this kind of stuff it can be confusing. It took me a couple tries to get it to work the first time I used it.
