Refurb Quality Control Issues - HTC Rezound

Hello all, sorry for the long post, but looking for thoughts, opinions and suggestions on this.
Issue:
My wife and I upgraded to Rezounds last November and since then we've been through a total of 16 refurbs. Anything from bad LEDs, to overheating, to dead pixels, to light leakage, to continuous reboots... You name it, we've had it. In each case we contacted Verizon, explained the issue, and Verizon then sends us a refurb. We've had several cases where the refurb would be DOA right out of the box and, in fact, have had replacements sent out on 4 consecutive days. I've finally gotten sick of it and have escalated to managers at Verizon, HTC and PCD (supposedly the company that is actually fixing the devices that are marked as refurb). In each case I've remained calm, courteous and professional since I know that getting rude and abrasive won't get me anywhere. Here's a summary of the conversations from each company.
Verizon:
I was escalated from the first line CSR to a tech support rep and then to what I'll refer to as a customer relations rep. I was given the option of going with the Galaxy Nexus or the Razr as comparable devices which Verizon actually considers an "upgrade"; however, in my opinion, neither of these are comparable. I use the camera ALOT so that's an important feature to me so the Nexus was out and the non-removable battery/storage is an issue for me with the Razr. I explained that my preference would be to either get a NEW rezound vs a refurb or be upgraded to the GS3 as that's really the only device that is "as good or better" than the rezound. Of course, that option was out being that this is a newer phone despite the fact that I offered to pay the difference. Against my better judgment, Verizon actually sent me a Nexus to try out. I did some photo/video comparisons between the Rezound/Nexus and the differences were pretty stark. The Rezound blew the Nexus away so I sent it back. I then explained my preference again of either getting a new rezound or a SG3 and was told that, since I tried the nexus, it was considered an "upgrade" and that because of this the GS3 was not an option. I said that this conflicted with what I was told earlier, but the manager fell back to the stance that this was a newer phone and not an option here. The manager basically gave me 2 options: 1. Continue requesting refurbs or 2. Purchase another phone off of Amazon/Craigslist since I'm not eligible for an upgrade right now. I calmly explained that I might come out cheaper if I paid the ETF and subsidized another phone with another carrier, but that didn’t get me anywhere. It was at that point that Verizon suggested that I contact HTC to see if there was something they could do.
HTC:
I was escalated in a simlar matter with HTC to a manager. The manager explained to me that they have nothing to do with the repairs of refurbs and that Verizon contracts to PCD to do the repairs on these devices. I was then directed to call PCD or go back to Verizon. I explained the quality control issues on these refurbs and that I'd be concerned if I were them that this is giving HTC a bad rep since most people probably assume that they come from HTC. I asked if there was anything that HTC could do and the manager took my name/number and said she would call me back within 24 hours; however, that was 3 days ago so I decided to call PCD.
PCD:
I was escalated to a manager here as well. The manager took the IMEI number from my recent refurb that I just returned back to Verizon. He confirmed that PCD did "certify" this phone; however, it was done by another company that PCD contracts to. I wasn't given the info on this company. I was told that PCD only repairs the devices and that my only option with them was to send in my refurb to them for repair or go back to Verizon and request another refurb. Two issues here is that I'd have to pay for shipping and be without a phone for an undetermined amount of time while they worked on it and, to be frank, I don't trust that they would fix the problem anyway given all of the bad refurbs I've gotten. I basically ended the call alerting the manager that they have quality control issues with their refurbs. He said he made a note of it and would look into it.
All of the managers that I've spoken with have been very understanding and courteous; however, no one has provided an acceptable solution to the issue. All of these companies seem to be "caught in the middle" with no one really accepting any responsibility for customer satisfaction or standing by what they are selling. But basically, after all this time and effort, I’m right back where I started with running through refurbs until I get one that finally works. Of course, come November when the 1 year warranty runs out I’ll be in trouble…
Again, just looking for thoughts, opinions and suggestions as well as if anyone else has experienced issues with refurbs.

It's hard to suggest anything at this point - it appears you've done everything possible. I also can't believe you've gone through sixteen refurbs! I've been using smartphones for a while now - some amazing and some not so amazing - but the Rezound has so far been my most reliable one. So I find it hard you've had so many issues with so many different phones. Is your house built on an Indian burial ground?
What I guess I will say, is if I were you I would definitely send it to them to get repaired as opposed to them just sending you another refurb. It sounds like you haven't really had a dedicated line of communication anyway with all the issues you've had, so just go ahead and bit the bullet and send it off.
Once they get it, "repair" it, and you get it back - if you have ANY more issues I would suggest you, not necessarily get angry, but get stern and let them know your frustrations and I personally would demand a newer model at no cost to you. With as many problems as you've had, and documented troubles of yours that they have on their end, you have every right. And if they still push back, go to the FCC. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. And let them know you are going to get the FCC involved. Before I was a network engineer, I was a lowly Tech Support Rep and whenever a customer mentioned FCC to us we immediately had to escalate the situation.
Whatever happens, sorry about your frustrations and hope everything works out for you.

You have had amazing patience and a profound amount of bad luck. I feel your pain. 4 thunderbolts for me. Now on the rezound refurb. Only issue I noticed so far is the little plastic frame surrounding the charge port is loose when the back case is not on. I hope that's all that's loose!

I didn't read a lot of your post cuz I have a migraine but dang that's a lot of phones to go through. If I had that many problems with anything I'd probably switch carriers or make them give me a new phone. It would be kind of funny if they have been sending you like the same phones over and over again. You could possibly request one from a different area but im not sure if they stock refurbs in different areas... Also have you been checking the revision numbers?
I also think its bs how grown people play the blame game with other companies. I'm sure someone is cutting corners somewhere to save or make more money and it really is pathetic that a multi billion or trillion dollar corporation can't fix an issue. 16 phones? Good lord lol. Best of luck, seriously that's a little ridiculous to have to deal with. I'm sure it's already cost you a lot of time/money dealing with all of that bs.

Welcome to the business model of our world nowadays. It's awful, everyone points the finger at someone else... Things used to be different. One thing that stuck with me was when I had a boss that said (paraphrased): "In companies employees towards the bottom of the chain are paid to say 'no' and the ones towards the top are paid to say 'yes'." I guess this ended up being more of a sympathetic rant. I'm still learning the benefits of assertion (the squeaky wheel gets the grease!). Good luck, give'em hell!
tl;dr companies suck now.

Wow.. Someone that has gone for more refubs than I have.. But yeah I went through like 8 T-bolts and 6 Rezounds for pretty much the same issue you had. That + physical damage on the screen like big ass scratches. Plus the screen was popping out on the T-bolt too.. Pretty sad quality control and "100 point inspection" my ass. You could try getting another refurb and selling it for a gs3. Or you can keep calling and try to get one of the sups to give you an upgrade. But if you do have unlimited data you can kiss it goodbye if they give you a subsidized upgrade. Your best bet would be to keep contacting Verizon.

Thanks for all the responses.

I'm a bit leary of going the repair route with PCD because I'd be without a phone for who knows how long plus I don't think they'll do it right based on the number of phones I've been through that they've supposedly repaired. I guess it would show that I tried all possible options though... Maybe Verizon would give me a credit on my bill for the amount of time I'd be without a phone! The FCC route might be worth a try.

I had actually asked Verizon about this and, from their perspective, all of them come from PCD. I suppose I could see if PCD could work this for me, but when I had contacted them I was told that I'd have to go back to Verizon. I didn't specifically ask if they could do this though so maybe it's worth a shot.
I haven't been fully documenting the revision numbers, but the ones I've checked have either ended with 00 or XA.
It's cost me time (and just a bit of frustration) more than anything else, but I'm sure that, while Verizon may not pay for the refurbs, they pay for the overnight shipping.

And I thought I had it bad, here I go again bringing up for $7.00 priceless dollars a month always get the extended warranty by now they might have worked you in a different phone with the long list of phone foo going on.
I'm on my 4th tbolt ,wife 2nd between 4g dropping off and loose charge ports, sim card changes network trouble tickets and proving out phone is a p.o.s. I'm slowing trying to work us into a different phone for $0.
Which is a major p.I.t.a. takes time
GOOD LUCK sounds like u are in for a fight once remans are out of stock they start pulling from new stock, which who knows how long that will take
Once I called and told them before I had phone just send me another one ,because I found a flaw in the device they could not fix, in the owners it stated it could do something which it did not that something was back in 2003 I ended up getting a different device
So find a flaw and work it to your advantage
My -2 cents

I've been through 10 refurbs myself and am about to go with #11 because the one I have now has light leak on the bottom half of the screen. Below is a pic of what I'm seeing. Maybe I should just deal with this issue as it's the only thing wrong with it, but because of all that I've been through I've become very picky.
My wife is about to get #7 and she's been through 4 refurbs in 4 consecutive days!
8/9 - Called Verizon tech support to report static to Verizon during phone calls; after troubleshooting they admitted that it's most likely a bad speaker so they sent us a refurb.
8/10 - Refurb received, but had bad LED; the search LED was noticeably dimmer than the others. Verizon contacted and another refurb shipped.
8/13 - Refurb received, but phone got noticeably hot and continually rebooted. Verizon contacted and another refurb shipped.
8/14 - Refurb received, but had light leakage similar to the pic below. Verizon contacted and another refurb shipped.
8/15 - Hoping this one is a good one, but not holding my breath...
So that's a total of 16 and counting!!

Are you referring to the Asurion insurance coverage? If so, I have that on my line, but not my wife's. My understanding though is that you have to pay $100 in order to actually use it and I don't feel that I should have to pay that while I'm still in the standard warranty window and the fact that it's not my fault that they're sending me junk devices.

I had no idea so many of you have had to go through so many refurbs. After reading this thread, I feel very lucky, hah.

OK if you have tec/ tep it extends your one year warranty until you get another phone.asurion only comes into play if you drown, murder, scratch,Rom lock it (hard brick it).
Under manufacture's warranty which Verizon just plays switch'um for u so you still have a device so your stuck unless u can show a track record of junk devices
Verizon changes the rules daily
It used to be after 3 like devices they would switch u out to a different device for no $$
I sent this to Verizon
NBR:000005506433
Recently got replacement phones for 0190 thunderbolt still drops 4g no 3g or 1x showing its all or nothing.
8190 doing samething as above
0190 x 4 phones
8190 x 2 phones
No non Google apps installed
3+ hours setting phones up to user liking timeless
Keep getting defective phones priceless
what are my next steps as in getting a phone that works

Thanks for the clarification. I have TEC/Asurion on my line so it looks like I'm good past the 1 year. My wife's line on the otherhand doesn't have it so after November of this year we'll be out of luck.
Regarding the number of replacements, I was told by Verizon that the rule use to be 3, but, because of the rising prices of smartphones, that rule has been removed. So I guess I could go through 30 of these and nothing would be done so I asked if there was a new limit and was told there is no limit.

The light leakage thing you have is pretty common, I have had it on a couple of my Rezounds before I got my Nexus, I wouldn't return it unless it has something else wrong with it

That.......... Really.............. Sucks.

My kids rezound was killing the extended battery in 4g and charge port was loose
Got a replacement so far so good
Have Verizon pull from diff location next time

It's a vicious circle...
Verizon has been pointing me to HTC even though Verizon contracts to PCD for these repairs, bypassing HTC. HTC points me back to Verizon saying that Verizon is contracting to PCD for repairs not realizing that PCD is sending horrible refurbs giving them a bad name. PCD points me back to Verizon/HTC saying all they do is repairs
Got back on the phone with Verizon this morning and, because PCD is doing such a horrible job, they recommended that I just send the device to HTC and have HTC repair it instead. So basically I'd be without a phone for who knows how long plus I'd be on the hook for shipping ... I did convince Verizon to give me a credit for the number of days I'd be without a phone so, sadly, I will probably go down this road if these next refurbs don't do the trick.
It's either that or settle for what in my opinion is a lower quality device in the Nexus/Razr or continue to do the refurb switcheroo...

16, or 10 or even 6 refurbs that fail is probably a violation of your state's Consumer Protection Statute. The problem is that FCC may preempt state laws as concerns claims against telecommunications companies, and nearly all agreements include arbitration cram-downs.
However, you *do* retain the right under such agreements to file a claim and insist upon arbitration of the claim, where the prevailing party recovers costs/fees (and I can't imagine after 16 refurbs you wouldn't prevail). You also may have the right to walk away from the provider altogether under the circumstances, although you may not find Sprint or AT&T a real "option." At least for me it wouldn't be acceptable as AT&T service locally is terrible and Sprint is, well, Sprint.
My daughter went through 4 Incredibles and I was about ready to tear someone's head off, and she's never been genuinely happy with the last Incredible, and as a result, will probably migrate to iPhone next month, never to look back at Android again. I think that's her loss, but I understand her frustration. I went through 3 Palm Treo 755p's, which had near legendary issues (and early Palms were manufactured by, ahem, HTC).
The other problem is that you probably won't be able to get legal counsel to handle the matter because the amount in dispute is less than what most lawyers would cost, and, finally, the Agreement with Verizon probably also prohibits a class action via its arbitration clause (which the U.S. Supreme Court held last year is perfectly valid even though it happened to violate California state law).
I'm quite certain that I would never have had the patience which you have exhibited through 16 refurbs. If money weren't an object and I felt like exploring things, I might study the viability of a direct action against the refurb source, claiming to be a third party beneficiary, and since they're not a provider subject to the FCC, bringing claims under consumer fraud statutes, or the Magnuson Moss warranty act. Bottom line, though, is that the ultimate "cost" doesn't warrant the trouble.
As for me, my 2nd refurb seems to be functioning and unless it does something that completely impairs my ability to use it (I soldiered on for about 4 months without a USB connection because the unit woudl still charge), I'm sticking with it rather than going with what's behind door #3.
Just one lawyer's take on this sad story.

T-Mobile & Asurion

Don't know if this is the correct forum or not, but I am certain I will be informed by somebody else should this be misplaced.
So.... I lost my phone last weekend and I subsequently filed a claim with Asurion, T-Mobile's insurance provider. However, I have a strange circumstance that did not require me to suspend my service. I was at the T-Mobile store getting a micro SIM card for use with another phone I was planning on flashing over to T-Mobile. Anyhow as it turns out, I could not get a micro SIM as it would render my service useless on my phone (unless of course I possessed a SIM card adapter, which I found existed after this incident). So the rep had to issue me a new SIM card.
After I all of that excitement I noticed I was running late picking-up my kids. So I rushed from the store, and I swear that I had all of my phones & SIM cards with me. However, upon returning home I could not locate my phone. I thought to myself that it must have fallen between the seats and that I would search for it after the kids leave. So I broke out the new SIM card and an old MyTouch 3G Slide to use during the interim. After the kids left I searched for my phone with no success. I even called the T-Mobile store and there too was informed they were not in possession of my Amaze.
I waited to file my claim anyways as I really believed my phone must be in my vehicle, especially as my truck is notorious for consuming cell phone, wallets, etc.! Sunday comes around and I still haven't found my Amaze. So I file a claim with Asurion, and I wait to hear back from them. Six hours later I get an e-mail response saying they have news about my claim. So I call the 866# and I am informed by a rep that my claim is denied because my line has been in use. I of course explain my story, and the rep claims to understand. They check with T-Mobile to see when the last use of my phone occurred and according to them it was the following day. This is odd, but my thought is that I had not used my phone the entire day prior to filing my claim thus the report of the last use of my phone.
After all is said and done, the rep at Asurion files another claim assuring me that this claim would not be rejected & that she would call me within 24 hours. I never heard from the rep so I called again only to be informed that my claim again is denied with no reason given. So again I tell the rep what happened, and again the rep says the understand, calls T-Mobile, and files another claim with all the same promises as before. Next day I get the same e-mail as I received prior which by now indicates to me that my claim is denied. This time when I call I decided to escalate the situation. Well, this only further confused the rep I spoke with as they also refused to allow me to speak to a supervisor while claiming they could solve the issue. I get placed on hold by this rep with the excuse that HE needed to contact T-Mobile. He comes back on the line, and right away starts to tell me that my line is insured not my phone! I of course already have the literature from Asurion pulled up. I very firmly explain to him that every single reason he has given me for not honoring my claim is complete BS.
This representative continued to hold his ground that my phone line is insured, that if they cannot detect the phone on the network the claim is no good and some other idiotic excuse that I rebutted. By now he can tell that I am not very satisfied with their tactics, nor his level of service. So he again places me on hold telling me that HE will speak with T-Mobile. Well... I got blind transferred to T-Mobile, and of course I am informed that they cannot process the insurance claim. I immediately ask to speak with a supervisor. So I get placed on hold, rep returns telling me that I need to wait and she asks me if she could place me on hold again, then she hangs-up on me. Great! An hour on the phone & I get nowhere.
So I decided to try the online support people. Which when I am chatting online sometimes with "customer support" I 100% feel that I am speaking with a chat-bot! This 'person' also tells me that they cannot do anything. However, he offers me phone upgrades on all 4 lines of service. So while I am waiting for this 'person' to type their next reply I began to search for an upgrade. Some upgrade it turns out to be as they are basically offering me to purchase phones at the full retail price. I let the rep know that this is such a bogus benefit and that I could purchase a phone at the full retail price anytime I wished. Enough of this; I'll just call T-Mobile one last time and inform them straight away that this is the last opportunity for them to get this right, and that after dealing with Asurion & their less than stellar service, I will not be calling them. This time I actually get a person that really understands the words coming from my mouth. He ends up filing the claim with Asurion for me, and after speaking to 10 people by now informs me that my claim will continue to be denied unless I suspend my service!
I had figured by now that no human is involved in the processing of claims. Looks like I am correct in my assessment. Sigh.... So again I get a notice this morning that my claim is ready and to call again, which is code for your claim is denied. Yup, my 5th claim is denied. So I am typing out this story of frustration while I await a reply to my 6th claim. A claim which I have finally adapted all of my responses for their automated system to understand.
I realize this is very long winded, but I appreciate your understanding of my frustration with what I now view as some sort of scheme. A scheme that is meant to bilk consumers out of their hard earned dollars, and never provide the service for which they have paid.
Am I the only person that has had this issue with Asurion/T-Mobile or any other carrier as it seams Asurion has the market cornered on providing Phone Replacement Insurance for every major carrier?!
Sadly Sent from my A500 while I feel lonely without my Amaze 4G
sorry to hear..
This is why Ive NEVER gotten insurance on ANY phone i've ever owned (be it on t-mobile, or verizon, or sprint). Because of the fact I know they all insure through asurion and I know for a fact Asurion sucks balls. Ive heard and read so many horror stories about asurion...not to mention the replacement phones they send out are usually garbage. theyre usually refurbished phones..and by refurbished phones they clean the screen, make sure it turns on, and then call it good. the same phone that went in for signal problems will 99% come out with signal problems. Eff asurion in the a, seriously. dont ever get asurion insurance again. if you ever do get insurance on the phone make sure its carrier insurance, not insurance via 3rd party (aka asurion)
i hope everything works out well for you.
Update:
Just as I planned I received an email finally approving my claim! This is what happens when an f-ing computer decides what to do. There quite literally has been no human involvement with my claim. Yet these ya'hoo's talk about fraud & all this other crap.
I got news for you idiots: when a system is finally figured out by people, then it is ripe for being manipulated.
I do agree very much with the post above me though. Stay away from the insurance for more reasons then the fact that you will be ripped off by this company. My opinion is that you save the $8/month you would pay towards the insurance & save it specifically for a fund for your phone.
Another note: I have been reading a whole lot of posts about stolen or lost devices. I highly suggest installing some program such as Lookout. I am still checking on my phone every day to see if it has been turned back on/found by somebody.
Other security ideas to consider: encrypting the data on your phone & SD card, locking the phone, password protecting the SIM card and with ICS entering owner info that is displayed on the lock screen (there are still some honest persons out there, they just don't always think to call the carrier to let them know they found a phone).
About the above security suggestions... I know that people complain about how unlocking the phone takes too much time. My sister is the biggest complainer I know. I did her a favor by installing Lookout on her brand new Amaze. Anyways, the 3 seconds it takes to unlock your phone can save you the headache later.
Just saying!

I've been shelling out money to these folks for the past 3yrs now.
What I want to know is did you call and tell T-Mobile that you lost the phone? Because they should be able to IMEI block it. Then I would go as far as to get a police report and then send in the claim again. Once that they see your phone is IMEI blocked then it should qualify your claim. Don't quote me on this but its worth a shot.
Good Luck.
If they don't ever wanna cooperate, always file a complaint with the BBB. Works with me

Received replacement late yesterday. Upon plugging in for initial charge noticed that the usb connector is loose, and yes I am using the charger sent with the phone.
I have to say my loyalty to this underrated phone is waning, and the thought of jumping over to Samsung is worrisome. I cannot and will not use a phone that I cannot replace the battery or add memory! Sorry HTC, but the One line lacks a whole lot of thought.
If my Acer tablet had cellular capability, I would just use it. The A500 has the best battery life I've ever had in an electronic product, and is well designed & constructed. Only problem is the optics, they suck.

you have to realize you recieved a refurbished product, not a new one. furthemore it was refurbished by ASURION not HTC. so factor both of those in and be happy it even works. Asurion's QC is horrible most of the time it seems they make sure it turns on and then say ''okay its fine''

Yeah. I know now that this is a newly refurbished P.O.S.! I am not pleased at all. Just got off the phone with Asurion. They are sending me an One S. I really don't know what to do here. I want my Amaze. I'm not willing to get a product that I cannot change the battery out of or add memory to. If that were the case, I'd get an iPhone.
May send back the One S.

if you know its a refurbished phone, then dont be mad at HTC =)
I say give the OneS a good try. You may find that the removeable battery isnt all its cracked out to be. yeah no sd slot is a bummer but seriously give it a shot. Personally I would have asked for another amaze. =)
I cancelled my insurance a few days ago because of this post! I'll never send another penny to Asurion.

Blame people that scam for all of this non sense, by all means I don't fully agree with all of asurions practices but working for tmobile I get to see the side you guys dont. People call in for claims by using there friends phones to try and get better phones, people that "lost" it and we check there call history and someone they know is using it, etc..... its easy to be upset I would if I was in ops shoes but if you understand the system insurance is great to have, I always tell people if you lose your phone first things first file your claim get it started even if u don't complete it you can get the proper direction on what steps to do once its lost to get your service up and running till you get a new one.

Cant really say I have any complains with Asurion other than the T Mobile store I went to was out of Amazes so I got stuck with a SGS2. Although technacly two SGS2s ebcause the first one had a problem where when making a call nothing would be heard, so luckilly I was in the parking lot still and went back in and got a replacement. I tried talking to the lady into letting me pay a difference for a OneS but she said not :/ I love HTCs so its kind of a bummer to have a Samsung but I cant complain too much either.
Also off topic: Glad to see the Amaze finally got CM9 working, well GSM atleast

ONE S is probably the best phone i've ever used from T-Mboile. (after flashing a new rom with the 3dots menu removed) nice battery life, thin, slick, fast, feels great in my hand, awesome bright screen that's just the right size for one hand use. I like it much better than my S3, except the no microSD card slot part. non removable battery doesnt really matter if you have have the 3.99 warranty replacement.
I just cracked my my amaze screen the other day, even had the d30 case. It just landed on its face sadly.. but what kind of deductible does assurion charge ? I'm debating on just keeping the phone cause its just a hairline crack straight up the middle of the screen.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
They deductible is around 125-130$ also if you decide to go that route, PRAY or call a Tmo store ahead to see if they even have any Amaze's left. There were none at the store I filed my claim so I got stuck with a SGS2
Dang, I didn't even pay that much for the phone. I convinced tmobile to fork it over for 50... No way I'm paying twice as much for a refurb. Thanks though.

I cracked my screen a few weeks ago. I also had the D3O case but it didn't help at all. the deductible was $130 and Asurion set my replacement right away (called about 23:00 Saturday night and had new phone Tuesday morning). the one they sent me was a brand new phone in a sealed unopened box, so now I have a spare battery, battery cover and SIM card.
That makes it sound much better. New phone and an extra battery will be sweet. I'll go for it. Thanks

I would trade my Amaze for a One S in a heartbeat. Going to the S4 processor and be able to run Cyanogenmod. Heck, the One S has a much more stable CM10 than the Amaze does for CM9. I hate that I can't get a stable Cyanogenmod ROM on my phone.

Sprint and LTE tirade

Thought I would try and give back a little to the boards with a short rant about sprint, maybe someone will find a useful bit of info from my crazy month of wtf.
So I got an Evo LTE, and im a OG evo guy since the release day so I expected a great deal from the brand. Im a 10+year guy with sprint, 2 lines, equipment protection plan, yada yada... When I got the phone charged up for the first time I tried making a call right away and couldnt get a signal; same house my OG evo works ok in. I was sent an air rave tower right away, which is both a curse and a blessing. I have my LTE (stock) for about a week and I start getting random reboots, I wait a day to make sure there wasn't something I was overlooking. My conclusion was I'm having the common random reboot problem. In addition I was also getting about 5 hours max battery life, and intermittent wifi, and strange overheating of the metal part of the cover. I called sprint and asked them what I should do, and they set me up with an appointment at the local store.
I bought the phone on a Thursday, and tried to return it two Thursdays later 14 days from the date on my receipt, at which point I was told they would not give me a phone out of inventory because my "14 day" return period expired. I argued all the way up to the store manager, with whom I shared words with. I was left with one alternative which was a "45min" wait for a tech to tell me my phone is broken, and 3 days from then I would get a replacement mailed to that store where I would have to return and exchange my old device, which they rudely handed back to me and said I should keep so "they don't loose it." I was leaving on a plane the next day and there was a hurricane coming so I told them I will keep the phone a few more days and they should f-%# themselves. Their 14 day return period starts the day BEFORE you buy the phone. returning two weeks from the day is 15 days on Sprint clocks, even when the Sprint rep on the phone makes your appointment for you. needless to say I was asked to leave the store.
The hurricane (more like tropical storm) shows up and my flight gets canceled, and the intermittent power outages basically disabled my airrave tower, so I was going on my third week with no working phone. I finally give up on all the crap and got a hold of the retention department or whatever they are called. I told them that if I can't get a phone out of inventory at the store the same day, im pretty sure Verizon would. They coughed up a $50 service credit and told me I had to go through the process. I re-activated my og evo so I would have somewhat of a reliable situation.
I went back to a different sprint store this week with an appointment and got lectured by a flunky girl who quoted the company line and tried telling me I clearly had a bad battery, and software issues. After I received my lecture from her I assured her I read all about many different people with my specific problems and I know she does too so lets get down to business ( I had waited 45 min with on time arrival for the appointment ). She started poking around my account (after having me read her my pin number aloud in public) and told me I canceled my equipment protection on the LTE and there was nothing she could do. I invited her to think about that for a minute, and she realized the person on the sprint *2 call that activated my OG Evo decided to remove my equipment plan without authorization. then I get the manager again, and 30-40 min later they hashed it out and told me keep my LTE and comeback tuesday (today) to pick up my replacement. I should also note that my google voice number was completely disabled from my account, (confirmed after an hour of trying to renew it via phone and computer.)
I go in today at 8pm, wait 30 min before anyone would talk to me about why I was there and encounter a soft spoken kid who couldn't figure out what I was asking for. He disappears in the back for a while then comes out with a refurbished OG Evo! They ordered the wrong Darn phone! I was not really surprised by this in retrospect... I then sat there with the manager while he tried to resolve the problem. His solution? I was told the order ticket was canceled (lies, we all know the first girl ordered me an OG Evo even though she held my LTE in her hand and solicited that I rate her well in my followup survey call); He then deactivated my OG evo, reactivated my LTE so he could order one, then tried and failed to re-activate my OG evo to no avail. After 20 min, I told him i knew how to update my profile and to fix it after I get home.
Needless to say, my OG evo is still not activated (he went home leaving me with no phone for yet another day), and my current status is I'm waiting for my factory (s on) new-ish LTE which may or may not be in by friday afternoon. The whole time there was a drawer full of inventory LTE's that they explicitly would not give me despite my hassle. I invited them to let me out of my contract and take their lemon LTE back and was again told no.
At some point in there I tried a few new ROMS and TWRP. I got stuck in a softbrick after an update to one of them ( I believe it was the meanROM ICS v39) which may have been my fault, not sure so no insult is intended. I believe it was a TWRP problem a few people seem to have had I've read. I was able to break the softbrick by getting into to recovery
(vol down and power pressed for 20 seconds then release > then vol down + power for 2 seconds each, 3 times > re-lock > then running the RUU jewel back to stock. Tamper message goes away after that and I was left with ReLocked message. The phone still has ALL of the aforementioned problems (as it did with any ROM I tried). Sorry I can't be much more helpful to the dev's with my descriptions, but it probably wont serve any of you to troubleshoot based off my results with a defective unit. One last thing- I have a wifi issue since day one with the LTE, it takes about 5 seconds to connect to any website the first time, after that everything loads in a snap, but browsing brings back the 5 second problem about every 3rd link I click.
tl;dr
What you should learn:
-Sprint 14 day return policy is no questions asked replacement from inventory provided you return within 13 days.
-Activating a legacy will probably nuke your google voice integration as well as complicate your replacement order.
-my random reboot problem didn't start until after about 1 week and minimum changes to the phone ( I have been doing most of my android stuff with my Nexus 7 tab.)
-Airrave towers die from fluctuating power for a couple hours (like during a tropical storm). Towers in S. Fla. worked for my girls Metro PCS device the whole time, as well as my OG Evo (not connected to service at that point).
-Sprint will NOT send you a replacement phone via post any longer.
-You must return to a Corporate store to get a replacement, and you have to drive back over there once it comes in (make an appointment!)
-You can probably snag a $50 service credit if you threaten to cancel (I've read people getting more).
On an unrelated note:
-(class 10) 32 GB micro sd card on newegg goes for about $20 with shipping, they are $100 at the Sprint outlet.
-$50 otterbox cases are clunky and not my taste, my 'greatshield' case from the egg was < $10 and I like it.
-Screen protectors at sprint are 10x as much dough as online.
If anyone is interested I will try and update this post after I get my new phone (if I get a new phone.) Sprint has gone a long way down, but the competitors are no better so don't be insulted if your one of their good employees. My total estimated lost time over this debacle has been about 4 weeks without a new working phone I already paid for, and 8 hours of driving, and waiting in the store or on the phone. I got kicked out of the store for cursing out the manager who was talking to me like im an imbecilic drone like he is, other than that almost every one else was dumb but well mannered. He actually called me out when I told him I was flying out of town, and work 7 days a week. He actually told me that there are laws that I must be given days off ( insinuating I was lying ). This is pretty ironic considering im a lawyer in this state; I know more than a few of the lurkers here are lawyers too, i'm sure you understand the long hours). His condescension pushed me over the edge, and hes lucky he didn't meet the old me.
Thx to all the Devs on xda for your superb work.

yeah i had a snafu with sprint and thats when I gave them the middle finger. got out of my contract ETF free despite the fact i was 22 days in.
Well, after 3 weeks of phone calls sprint finally decided to send me a replacement evo,i mean its really bad when you have to go throught all this just to get a working phone,it shows that sprint has no interest in keeping customers happy,i came from verizon and they offer you a replacement without hassle,i dont know if its because verizon is doing way better financially or what, but they need to get their stuff together

Now I have a issue with best buy black tie plans and getting a phone but that's a story for another day.

I think the stores in your area dropped the ball. Only in the case of ordering you the wrong phone and making you wait again while the correct one came in. The other things technically were Sprint policy.
My location would have worked with you on the point of ordering the wrong phone. That is of course assuming you were polite. Individuals who are condescending jerks don't get far. Not saying that's what you are or were.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
So from what I gathered from the wrong phone being ordered is that sprint has to order the device that is currently active on the account. That explains why u got an Og evo and not the lte. I'm a tech at sprint and that's how the system works.

Full of thoughts...
Thanks for all of the sophisticated replies, glad to finally be posting here after a few years of lurking.
Something is very broken at Sprint and I suspect it has everything to do with a bunch of gone by night,
corporate exec's that fire people in hallways and use phrases like "corporate efficiency"...
I estimate my lifetime sprint spending at a modest $25,000. Its a severe kick to the gentleman region
that the moment my phone stopped working It was not replaced.
Honestly, I know how corporate employees feel, but the beauracratic, non-sense policies that ignore what I
need ( a working phone ) and sanction customers like me (my time and patients) are a disaster for many
companies. I was in sever need of my working phone connection, and I got screwed by sprint policy that
keeps them from loosing money from customers that can't be compared to me.
I'm a super nice guy most of the time, it was always served me well to try and give people what they want.
I may be highly educated and blessed for my financial situation (im not rich, but am thankful), however
I grew up in Detroit, a city with a 50% literacy rate, 25% highschool graduation rate, and crippling
unemployment (possibly as high as 30-40% un-adjusted). For lack of a better way of saying it, I talk like
a common man. I am also from a very violent place, so I have learned to respect people who I don't know
much about, but to strike back when they cross the line with me. So i probably sounded like a jerk bag getting
kicked out of a Sprint store, but believe me ... come visit south Florida sometime, you will honestly wonder
how some people here made it to adult-hood.
As a side note; if you work in customer service don't talk about customers in a different language. My girl and
I combined understand 6-7 languages (most fluent). We normally dress down, I like wearing jersies and sandals.
We both look 5-10 years younger than we are, and could easily be stereo-typed as no one important- in
fact we both like it that way. I've never asked Sprint for any special favors.
That being said, I have some valuable business advice for Sprint, and would go into MUCH more detail with
someone who was in charge at their higher levels: basically Sprint needs a way to tell the difference between
customers that are a money suck, and ones who are the bread and butter. Then that system needs to be easily
applied by the worker bees.
All that the store manager had to do on my first trip to sprint was to get me a working phone line and make it
easy for me to exchange, even if I had to come back. Its the MOST BASIC reason anyone walks in a sprint store,
and their relative inability to deal with a hardware issue without insulting me and wasting my time is a
malignant corporate problem, not an employee problem.
Make up your own minds about how I sound, it is what it is. If you work for Sprint I encourage you to
not take offense to my comments, Im really trying to use broad strokes with these points.
XDA members are so, so close to a new watershed in tele-com; It wont be long now untill none of us will be
willing to sign contracts and/or purchase hardware from our cellular providers. The rest of the world isn't
going to take to long to catch on either. With companies like metro pcs doing the kind of numbers they are,
Sprint as we now know it is going to be a relic.
My Sprint experiences have been positive 80% of the time, but when it goes bad it goes really bad.
@David: BestBuy is going to die a slow, painful corporate death before 2022 I surmise. Their problems
are very similar to sprint, sorry for your bad luck with them; I think I already know what you would say.
I'm confident people like on this forum will bring the industry back up to speed on their own terms. Its really
quite an amazing community, a real credit to humanity. I dont just say that, the existence of a dev community
like this is quite a unique human event (a sort of enlightenment.) There are not enought nice things to say about
how people here help others with something they genuinely do for fun.
Cell companies on a whole are intellectually dishonest with the people, and have adopted the economic principals
of companies that are the college examples of myopic, unethical, poorly directed, abusers. Much like the mortgage
industry, lack of consumer oriented management has created a culture of abuse and if my readers don't agree, they
can at least understand why I make the argument.
I have gotten pretty far away from what I started talking about, so Ill leave it here: invest in google, they are
sending a pretty clear message to sprint by rolling out google Fiber in Kansas...IMO

You must be a Republican. You've got to be right? Sure that holds no relevance but your post screams Republican. Lol.
No offense but this post is drenched in the very condescending tone that I was under the impression you communicated in. All customers should be viewed as equal. It's unfair to believe otherwise. I understand you feel as though your needs and requests hold priority over that of the majority but policies are policies and they are in place for a reason. There is no excuse it took so long for your replacement device to arrive, but let's be honest. You did have a functional phone in the meantime, right? Sprint should have taken responsibility for their mistake though. I definitely empathize with you on that point.
I'm sorry, the entitlement argument always rubs me the wrong way.

Try again, the way the planet Earth works is that you turn one year old on the anniversary of your birth.
I returned to the store 13 days and 18 hours prior to my previous visit.
When considering some potential for illogical ambiguity such as yours,
Sprint should confer benefit of the doubt upon the disadvantaged party (me).
Sprint sold me a lemon, and a monthly plan for equipment guarantee, which makes me a disadvantaged party.
I was also given a receipt with terms of adhesion incorporated into it mentioning 14 days with no clarification of
the intent that the moment the transaction occurred a full day is presumed as having past.
Turns out the Florida Supreme Court agrees with my logic: the day the transaction takes place is not included.
For instance, If I serve you with a lawsuit today, you have 30 days (starting at zero) to respond.
If it had said "return the phone within 30 days of the purchase date", you might have yourself an argument.
"14 days" is a measurement of time that appeared on my contract.
Lets review:
-if I agree to give you one apple a day for 14 days starting on a Thursday you will get your last apple on Wednesday.
-if I agree to give you an apple in 14 days, you will get an apple two Thursdays from now.
Now lets have fun:
suppose today is Thursday
-If I tell you to meet me in Vegas in 7 days, you will expect me next thursday
-if i tell you meet me at my office before I go home in 8 hours, you can add 8 hours to the current time and rely on me leaving at the sum.
suppose its 5pm-
-If you ask me (on a Thursday) to meet you at your office within 336 hours I have until next Thursday at 5pm to comply.
336 hours = 14 days
Now try substituting '336 hours' for the words 'two weeks' or '14 days'; Rational minds work in mysterious ways.

They even messed it up there!
Day 1 starts when the phone is activated?
That clearly means two different things...
Day one starts and ends when exactly?
Why should a customer have to guess, especially in the 24 hour world of web shopping?
Why not simply state the date which will be the last of the period? I know my library does.
I wonder if anyone else has pondered this problem, oh say 3 years ago on yahoo! answers...

in the future you can bypass the whole store visit by calling them and stating the problem and they will drop ship you another device right then if within the time period. I've done it before a few times no problems at all.

I tired, I know what you mean too. I had a treo drop dead after a few days and it was about as painless as a phone call and dealing with the return packaging. Unless I seriously missed something, I tried talking to many different people, supervisors, etc.
I called on the 10th day (or if your a sprint employee the 11th) and talked to a rep who told me there is no way for them to send me a phone AT ALL. I argued up to the supervisor, and was told that Sprint has changed its policies quite drastically since the iphone was brought over
Anyway, I believe the new policy is that you HAVE TO take your exchange back to a Sprint corporate store, and have exchanges made there within the 13 days time frame.
Another guy also informed me that if I did a straight up insurance claim on the phone I would have to pay a $200 deductible.
hopeless..... Im calling the store tonight, Im pondering how to stay calm. If the new phone is flawed in any more than minor way and not fixed with an inventory phone, im giving up and will be trying to get out of the ETF and finding a new carrier. Im sure I can get my $200 back out of the virgin hardware. I give them 3 to 1 odds of not screwing something else up.

I know you probably don't think you are being condescending, but the fact that you had to argue on your call with customer service makes me think you come across as such.
And while you think Sprint should see you as better than the riff-raff, truth is, your individual account is no different than the millions of other individual Sprint customers. I also have issues with my local Sprint corporate store service techs, but I have nothing but positives for the business customer care department.

Yeah I called Sprint one morning because I had no data after updating PRL. Within 10 minutes they were ready to send me a new phone.
I was able to fix it by connecting to a WiFi connection to update and it was fine so I kept my phone. I thought they were more than helpful.

Well, I have some experience with Wisconsin's .. err wisconsinites?... wisconsonians?
Anyway, based on my experience you are making your point because I used the word 'argued'.
Arguing is not mutually exclusive of being a gentleman during the conflict.
I was very nice to the people, I just did not accept their answers. The first girl I talked to, although dim witted, told
me that she did her best and asked me if there was anything else I needed, I told her her answer was unacceptable
to me, and while although not her fault in any way, I would like to talk to the supervisor.
I am a mover, but my main advantage is I can easily relate to all sorts of people, I walk around smiling,
except when people break my stones. If you go out of your way to disrespect me I will shame you publicly.
I don't live in the midwest, but I grew up there. we probably share the same values / character traits.
Just realize that there are other cultures in different parts of the country, and S. Florida is a place where you
can pull over and help a lady change her tire (just because you're a good guy) and she will complain you are
taking to long to do it. (happened to a friend of mine). Down here its 'too good, too stupid". I'm not intimidated
by the Latin bravado, and have found most these boys down here don't know why its a bad Idea to try and
back a hockey player into a corner. The store manager talked trash about me in Spanish while I was standing right there
I knew what he was saying and was not wrong for reacting a certain way. I was definitely not the one being smug there.

I'm oddly uncomfortable with discussing my political leanings here, but I will say I think for myself.
Anyway, there are many problems with your points-
I have been through this process with Sprint and exchanged one a few years back (a new Treo) the 'policies' were
much different then, and I expected the same pleasant results this time around. No Dice.
I was treated well when making a visit to buy a phone, and crapped on once the payment cleared.
Ill remind you that I called sprint within 10 days and they set my appointment up for me!
Nether the phone rep or the store told me there would be any problem until I showed up on day 14
and was forced to sit in the store for about 90 min. and not offered an inventory phone because of 'policy'.
I had the other line hooked up to my dying og evo, and its pretty bad. Ive been using my nexus 7 and
google voice to make calls, since no one could get my google number to ring through to the og.
The policies would have been fine if 3-4 people i met along the way hadn't dropped the ball.
reassuring me on the phone then not coming through after I drive to the store is unacceptable.
You use the word entitlement in a somewhat laughable way-
Why should customers all be treated equally, there are many that need way more than me; picture
my grandmother sitting there asking what an app is. Once a guy goes through the process like I did
There is no reason to consider my problems as the same priority as others. Facts and circumstances
should define policies, not bureaucratic nonsense that ignores the needs of one paying customer.
Sprint has lacked integrity in this respect because I paid fair and square and didn't get what others get. -That's my fault somehow?
That brings me to my second point about 'entitlement' ... I paid and got a bad device, my theory of
entitlement is based on the money I paid. When you pay for a movie ticket you are then entitled to
go in and watch that movie. I ran around for hours based on bad advice and policies. I never asked for
something other customers don't get. All I asked for is what the average customer gets: I pay money
and they give a working phone. If Sprint is going to operate on a buyer beware ethos, judge them
not me.
I understand my words read as condescending, but im not here to make myself sound pleasant.
I tried to lay out the relevant facts in a tone that reflects feelings after a month of not having my new toy, or a working line half that time.
Put yourself in my shoes, and tell yourself this because of bad karma or something.
I wrote all of this in hopes someone will find it personally helpful, I've lurked here for years and wanted to give something useful back to the community.
I was on this board for several hours trying to break my soft-brick and read at least three unanswered threads that were related to my problem.
I figured it was time to be a noob and give a few people a heads up. Im sure a few of you read all this and were surprised about something.

I was in a similar situation years ago. They refused to send me a phone this time, I asked each person why I was treated differently last time and at lease one Sprint phone manager thinks its because "sprint stopped doing that after the Iphone [got ported over.]"

Sprint $35 RMA for power issue

Hello,
Just wanted to share my experience with my Evo. First I love this phone. I sit next to an apple guy all day and just laugh and laugh and laugh. But the phone is only amazing when it actually turns on. Starting last Saturday - I experienced power issues, where my phone would just turn off - and would only turn back on if I introduced a power source, AC or USB didn't matter. Then after about 4 of these episodes, my phone just stopped wanting to turn on at all, with our without a power source. Walked into a Sprint retail shop - basically was called a retard for not buying insurance, and was told I was out of luck. I told them that's crap - I've been a sprint customer for 10 years, blabalabla do something or I walk next door to Verizon. So he called his buddy at a Sprint service store. I was informed of a known issue that involved our phones - but no details on what that issue was, either they didn't know or didn't want to say. Anyway, I was told I could RMA my phone for $35 and then add insurance afterwards. Next day - new phone - done. No one knew at sprint, or was willing to admit what the issue actually was.
1. Anyone know what the issue actually is? Sprint claimed "Software", not accepting updates, basically all software. IMO, you need power before your software loads, so how could it be a software issue?
2. If it is indeed a battery discharge issue - I would imagine stripping the phone and replacing the battery should fix it? Is it solved in certain hardware versions?
Never heard of this issue. My EVO 3D was replaced within the first week I had it because the battery died and wouldn't turn back on again being charged or anything. Turned out to be an issue with all of them. Took it into a Sprint store (mind you I have TEP and it was a week old phone) and they just gave me a new one.
I call all my customers retards regardless if they have TEP or not.

I call the representatives in the stores retards. For whatever reason, every store that I've been to in Central Florida have people working there that know absolutely nothing about their phones. I made a sale for a representative one time while I was killing some time looking at the phones that were out. All I had to do was amaze the customer with the features of the phone, that's all.

That is true. I have to say that most sales representatives don't know squat about phones.

I also just RMA'ed my first day release EVO 4G LTE due to light leakage from the home button. When I originally brought the phone in to a service store on July 18, the Sprint service tech said it was clearly defective, but I would still have to pay the $35 admin fee for Sprint to process the RMA. I wouldn't have to pay anything if I did it directly through HTC, but it would take up to 2 weeks to get a replacement. So last week I decided to just pay the $35 and have Sprint send me a replacement with the return envelope. However, this time, the tech said that the light leakage was a "cosmetic defect" that doesn't affect the phone performance and he refused to create an rma. I said that was retarded and asked for the manager, who promptly approved the e-ticket to rma the device.
The Sprint store customer service experience at the Greenfield, WI location can be so frustrating. We've been with Sprint forever, so I don't know if it is any better at AT&T or Verizon. But it makes me consider switching.
One of the Evo's in my family was defective upon opening the brand new phone (dead line in the digitizer grid) and they wanted $35 to replace it--absolutely absurd! Sprint's customer service is going down the drain, fast.

Sprint shouldn't be charging for hardware defects. If you bought it through sprint, you should inform the rep that it is sprints responsibility to replace hardware components that fail. Rep's at stores are night the brightest, they just have to meet their quota per week. I wouldn't go through them. I almost always go through retentions. They are the ones who know what they are doing, and have the power to credit money or perks to your account.
Whenever you have a problem with your phone, be it hardware failure, loss in service, want to upgrade early, replace with a similar model, call retentions first. The number can be found be looking online.
For those who have already paid the $35, you could call retentions and be credited that amount towards your next bill. Just tell them what happened, what you want, and they most likely will be able to help you.
p.s, retentions may ask you to take your phone to a store to have a sales rep look at it and determine if it's damaged from a hardware defect. This usually happens for claims like "my phone is bending" (happened to me). Theyre reasoning is that they want to make sure it's a defect before offering a free replacement. If the sales rep tries to tell you that you have to pay the $35, just tell explain the situation, "retentions just needs someone to determine if its defective, and then they'll replace it for free", and be on your way.
Hope this helps
Cheers

That sounds a lot like what happened to my phone. I plugged it into my computer via USB and it basically went totally dead. Difference is, when I took it to a Sprint store, they told me it was a known issue and gave me a new phone.
Wait why the hell is sprint charging for hardware defects? I thought without TEP all hardware defects are supposed to be a free replacement for the first year? This is how it was done for me for the first year without insurance on my OG EVO and touch pro 1.

I had to pay 35 without insurance also for a screen defect , had the month for 2 months
I love this. The phone has a one year warranty with sprint. End of story. I'm on EVO number 5 since June and each time I walk in, the sprint nerd says they hope I bought the insurance..I did but quickly remind them there warranty is free and is for one year. After that they talk to there manager , they order me a replacment phone. The last time the manager gave me a new one. Never paid a penny.

The amount of incorrect information in this thread makes it pitiful to call my self a Sprint customer. Without insurance you have to pay the $35 fee to get a phone replaced and fixed if it uses a part. It's not "RMA"ing it either, Sprint has their own in house service and repair program. If you have a hardware defect and you don't want to pay, send it to HTC because that is where your one year warranty is. With HTC. Not Sprint. They are a business, not a soup kitchen. And no, they won't replace your phone for cosmetic defects. Not a soup kitchen. If you have any issues with your phone out of the box, you have that 14 day return and exchange period to get it resolved without cost.
This thread is mostly about people taking responsibility for their own products and realizing everything isn't a handout. $35 for an entire replacement phone, which retails at over $500 is a hell of a deal. In fact, its usually cheaper than actually having the insurance, which is now $11 a month.
The way it has always been done for me with hardware defects with no damage caused by me in the first year (e.g. touch pro slide out keyboard flimsy keyboard ribbon cable, faulty screen on OG EVO) was that I walk into a sprint repair center, they see the problem, request a replacement device, no charge. They always tell me not to worry about fees since they just send it back to manufacturer and it's neither my problem nor Sprint's. I've been doing it like since 07 up until my last case in early 2011. Other folks around xda have been doing it the same exact way, so I'm guessing something has changed recently... which sucks.

For what its worth, I'm on my 4th EVO lte... I do pay the very cheap like 7 or 8 bucks for tep.
First LTE, was bent after a week, called 611, they said go to store, I said no (i repair phones and laptops and TVs) the techs are idiots, and you guys don't have any parts yet.. got new phone via mail 2 days later.
2nd lte, had bleeding light on bottom near home button, same deal when I called 611, same deal, got new phone in 3days.
3rd LTE, bottom left of screen rippled with slight movement, also speaker phone was borked. Again, told 611 their guys were morons and even called to see if they stocked replacement screen and speaker, so same thing, called 611, got new one, this time they on back order.. got sprint replacement in about week and half..
4th is ok, no issues, cept for hboot 1.19 which unless ur incompetent, is no biggie, wow, one simple command line to flash what ever..
Now I did have to argue a bit with phone support , they advised me to call asurion, I said no, its a hardware defect yada yada.. when ever they wernt working with me on phone, I asked what my early termination fee was, then I was shipped a phone..
U just gotta be Stern, not unreasonable with those guys

Well - in defense of Sprint - I did not buy the phone there. But regardless any retailer should be able to RMA something with a defect - sort of like how car dealerships work. At least they offered the add on insurance since I "activated" a new phone. Now that I think about it - whats the activation cost of new phones lol ... like something around 35...

Another Horrible Experience at a Verizon Store with the DNA

My friend bought a Droid DNA with a dead pixel in the screen. I told her that she should exchange it because that it is not normal. She went to the Verizon store and they said that it was not a big enough of a deal so they would not exchange it for the same phone but only exchange it for a different phone with a 35 dollar restocking fee. So she ended up getting a Samsung Note 2 which costs more, she does not really like, and has a yellow screen tint issue. Any suggestions?
Yeah, call Verizon and tell them how awful the experience was, and that you bought a cutting edge device that is not 100% functional. You aren't dissatisfied with the phone - you're dissatisfied with this model's bad screen.
They couldn't restock the one you have now anyway, because it's faulty.
Not to argue, but most companies have an "exceptable tolerance" for dead pixels on a screen, i.e. there has to x amount dead within a given space ( size of a dime for instance).
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Could you actually see one dead pixel on this screen? Not being sarcastic, just curious.
Best bet is to call customer service. Since she accepted the Note for a replacement it might be a little difficult to get a new DNA back. It could take talking with a supervisor because she is on her second phone but I think if she explains the situation they'll work with her. It just depends on who you get on the line.
Agreed. Call customer service and express how ANGRY and Disappointed she is that she didn't get a phone she REALLY wanted in perfect working order. And that she didn't really want the Note2 that was pushed on her by the (unscrupulous) salesperson. If the initial contact doesn't do what you want, escalate it to a supervisor. Can't hurt!
Do exactly what rfarrarh said. I have several VZW employees that are my friends (including my best friend and daughters god father) and they are floored at this experience of yours. Make sure to say that the salesman pushed her to the Note 2. And, as always, threaten to leave VZW for another carrier. One dead pixel is enough to return the phone as a faulty device covered by the warranty (not to be confused with the insurance). Just complaining about poor customer service as well should be enough to get this situation resolved.

Verizon is one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with. Keep calling CS until you get a rep that helps you. I have had to call in three or four times before getting someone to actually help me.
why all the verizon hate I work at verizon wireless and I did a exchange today for a customer with a dead pixel on the dna and I had to use a magnifying glass to really see it in the store. So much hatred towards verizon do people realize if you going in all pissed it doesn't help be nice and tell us the issue and most reps would be happy to help.

Nothing from this story makes it sound like she did that - if she had to be convinced she should exchange it, I doubt she was both upset and outgoing enough to walk in being *****y toward them. Not that it isn't possible, I just wouldn't jump to that conclusion.
Don't you get 14 days to return and call off the upgrade? If so she should do that and get the dna at another verizon or a retailer.

yes you get 14 day return policy with a 35 dollar restock fee and only 1 exchange is technically allowed. If I were her I would call CS *611 and talk to them at this point most stores cannot and will not help unless you go to a manager and get an exception and that depends on the manager. sucks people have bad experiences in stores I mean I am sure it happens just hate to hear people say verizon is the worst when I know that is not true. anyway that is my 2 cents.
Also I want my DNA but I have to wait so at least you guys could all get one and experience it I can only play with one in my store.

This thread doesn't seem to have much Verizon hate in it in my opinion. I'm lucky to have a Verizon store where are all the employees are nice. And if I'm correct I believe that was AT&T who was just rated as having the worst customer service for phone carriers for the second year in a row.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
Try going into a sprint store and see how well that goes for you... You'll be running back to Verizon. Most of sprints in store employees are dumber then a bag of rocks and too arrogant to bother trying to understand an issue or actually help you. I would suggest going to another Verizon store or calling cs. My limited experience with Verizon has been nothing but positive thus far.
I believe the standard procedure at a Verizon store is to first try to talk you out of your request. In your example by claiming that a dead pixel is not a big deal. All you have to do is simply insist that for you it is a big deal and you want the phone exchanged. After that they say that although they still disagree about the dead pixel, they will exchange the phone anyway because of their satisfaction guaranteed type policy.
I went through this four times (yes, it was somewhat painful) last week. Basically went to one store to exchange my wife's phone, they did not have the DNA, went to the store where I bought it, they just ran out of DNA's, finally got it done at the third store. The next day I exchanged my own phone also at that same store (with the same clerk). So maybe it counts as three times.
My wife's phone made a popping sound with the back cover if you pressed it, that bothered me. Did not bother any of the Verizon reps, some even claimed they could not hear it. After some pondering, and my insistence that regardless of what they thought or heard, I was not happy with the phone, all agreed to exchange it (and in two cases sent me to the next store to get that new phone).
My phone had a *really* recessed power button. I almost had to use a finger nail to press it. My wife's, as a point of reference, was much better. Same story with the VZ rep. He thought the button was fine, but I told him that it definitely was not fine for me. Got it exchanged. He looked almost offended the entire time he was swapping the phones, the second time now, but got it done nevertheless. After I thanked him he even made the point that this was not a big deal, as long as it makes me, the customer, happy.
Given the number of tries here, a trend has clearly developed. Hope this helps people deal with the exchanges.

isn't verizon policy that you can just take back the note 2? Tell them you are not happy and you are going to go back to your old device. Then call customer care and tell them that you are leaving as soon as your contract is up unless they get you the DNA.
I would not try at the store since they get commision for the device.

You can only do that once. Technically, the DNA to Note was that one shot. That is how they look at it in the stores anyway.
If your friend was within the 14 day period, the employees at the store can't tell her ****. Your friend got screwed, and I would file a complaint right away!
I too found a dead pixel, but honestly its not that big of a deal, and nobody other than me would ever notice it and I only notice it when I look for it. Think about it, its literally 1 in 2,073,600 pixels, I think ill get over it.

That's why she has to say that she was pushed into the Note 2 by the sales Rep (which is what sounds like happened). The Note 2 is $100 more, which looks really bad on the reps part. My VZW friends tell me that if she talks to a supervisor it will be fixed. Especially if she files a complaint. I mean you buy this new product that's top of the line and you find a defect in it and they won't replace it. By pushing the higher price device taking advantage of a persons desperation.

I think that might be more regional than anything else. Where I'm at, it's the complete opposite. It's the Verizon guys that give you attitude while the Sprint guys are polite and understanding.

Verizon = shady employees

I'm about send a six page letter to the Verizon VP of retail operations and customer service. I have never experienced more improper behavior by the hourly employees of any company. Before the V10 release I called to confirm that unlimited data customers could buy the phone on the device payment plan on Nov. 15th. I received numerous confirmations over the phone. When I entered the store they had no idea what I was talking about. Fine, put that on Verizon corporate for not properly informing all the stores of what was going on. After many calls a customer service supervisor indicated that I was correct but that Verizon had not updated its own software to make the change in time. I placed the order online that night as the stores had already closed. When I called the next day with another supervisor they again told me I was correct and would make arrangement to ensure that I was given the device payment plan without losing my unlimited data. I arranged to pick up the phone at an official Verizon store. The supervisor assured me that she would follow up after I picked up the phone to make sure everything was correct.
SHADY BEHAVIOR #1 - that same supervisor went into the notes after the call the next day and left an outright lie indicating that she informed the customer (me) that I would NOT be able to buy on the device payment plan until December. The order was canceled and NO ONE notified until AFTER I walked into the store to pick up the phone. My order was canceled without any notification via email or text, so I basically wasted my time going to the store and making all these calls with the supervisor.
SHADY BEHAVIOR #2 - When I called customer service from wihin the store, another supervisor, who said she knew the first supervisor personally, began telling me that I had no order. I emailed it to her and she began refuting the validity of it and when I asked her to give me the status of the order she admitted she had no way of knowing because she had no access to internet orders, which was not her department. Clearly she was just trying to cover for her supervisor friend. I immediately told her to stop wasting my time, now some 30 minutes after first calling, and connect me with a supervisor in the internet orders department ASAP, what she should have done from the beginning. Unbelievable... they see that you are clearly angered and yet they try to blame you the customer for their mistakes.
I returned the phone after I was told that device payment plan would start exactly one week later. On the day I was eligible for the DPP I purchased a new phone. After spending nearly 10 hours and speaking to over a dozen different Verizon employees I wasn't about to come away from the ordeal without the device payment play as I was assured I would.
SHADY BEHAVIOR #3 - In the store the new phone (#2) was handed to me without a screen protector and a receipt was not given to me.
SHADY BEHAVIOR #4 - when I went back into the store to ask for a receipt, and point out that the phone was not working, a employee passed himself off as being "THE" manager. I asked him if he was the store manager and he admitted he was not. He would not provide me with receipt because the store was now closed although many employees were still inside with some customers. He said my receipt information would be available online, which was false. Even the confirmation email sent did not make reference to the model of the phone that was purchased it only made reference to my old phone.
SHADY BEHAVIOR #5 - The next day I returned the phone and was finally given a receipt. This phone also stopped working properly after a few hours! I called a store near my work to confirm if they had a replacement phone in stock and they said they did. I walked over to the store and they said, after finding out it was for an exchange, that they did not have the phone in stock after all. Huh? I drove over to another Verizon store as no one was picking up the phone (??) and as soon as I walked in I asked if they had my phone in stock. They said sure we have it. I asked them to confirm but they would not tell me unless I gave them my phone number, presumably to see if I was there for an exchange or for a new line activation. I told the guy it was for an exchange and he went in the back stock room and, when he came out surprise, surprise they didn't have the phone in stock. I'm tenacious so I walked over to the third Verizon store of the night. On the way over I called and asked if they had the phone in stock, they confirmed that they did and that they had more than one in stock. When I walked in they tried to do the same thing, as soon as I asked if they had it in stock they wouldn't answer unless I gave them my phone number. But this time I had them on the hook because the guy told me over the phone that they the phone in stock and "PLENTY". The employee that took care of me tried to give me the run around too once they saw it was an exchange. She took my phone to the back room to show it to her manager and confirm the equipment problem. I asked her to tell him to come out as I did not want my phone leaving my sight for long. She said he could not come out..... shady. She comes out with a new phone and I ask her to turn it on before she switches over the service as I want to make sure the screen is 100% operational before I have to go through a third exchange. She says she can't take it out of the box without switching over the service. I asked her if they had more than one of the phone in stock in case there was a problem, and without making eye contact she responds with an incoherent "nu uhh" and head shake. I did not tell her that her own co-worker confirmed that they IN FACT did have more than one phone in stock nor did I ask why they were now singing a different tune. Seriously... this is how a publicly traded company runs its retail operations?
To summarize, I was LIED to repeatedly by Verizon employees. Supervisors lied in their notes to cover up their giving out incorrect information. Verizon retail stores make it deliberately hard for your to exchange a phone. I plan to send this letter to the consumer protection agency run by the federal government.
Somehow I find it hard to believe you where treated this badly by VZ. You had 3 brand new defective phones in a row??
I have dealt with 3 different VZ stores in my area & have had excellent/courteous service from all 3. Sure, we where all upset when VZ raised the price of the unlimited data service by $20 a month (I cancelled 3 lines because of that) but that was not their employees fault.
I owned a retail store for over 20 years & your whole attitude seems to me as being one of those customers that is never satisfied no matter how hard they try.
~John
^ Yes I can tell you were a retail owner. To make a blanket statement like "your whole attitude" is indicative of that.
You made not a single mention of the outright lies that were told by the Verizon employees but instead opted to put it on the customer or impugned the customer's integrity by voicing skepticism of faulty equipment without any solid basis for that skepticism. You don't know me, and you don't know the track record of an entirely new phone. Have you visited the LG forums to see those who have had to make multiple returns? Of course not. Yours is the typical management response of Fortune 500 companies that are loathed by the public.
Also, there were two returns for faulty equipment, each confirmed at the Verizon store before a new phone was given. The first return was simply my prerogative to take advantage of the device payment plan, as I was initially told by numerous Verizon employees prior to the initial sale. And secondly you fail to address the point that the stores apparently have unethical motivation to make an exchange of their inventory for another location's sale of hotly sought after phones deliberately more difficult.
And by the way, I worked for a five star hotel, deemed the best in the metropolitan area, all through college where we bent over backwards to ensure customer loyalty and to deliver value for premium services. I had to take written tests for AAA certification to verify that I knew all the latest information required of my job and had frequent training seminars to ensure that we were all worthy of the "best in class" title. Verizon like trumpet that they're the best, evidently they don't visit their own stores very often. You know how well your operation is doing when the customer has a problem, and not just for how well they handle mundane transactions. Can your staff rectify the problem as quickly as possible without further aggravation to customer? But ultimately we're not talking about just dropped balls and incompetence here, we're talking of employees repeatedly making deliberately false statements to customers. That's beyond acceptable.
Sucks to be PorscheOscar.
Is there any chance that the humanity of at least ONE employee would have come forth and done at least half-of-the-right-thing by you if you were presenting a good persona?
But I feel for you ... because of course ... ALL the employee's in the store wouldn't have the same negative attitude and manipulate a computer system because the person in front of them was completely rational, respectful and courteous. It has to be some corporate level decision that was sent through the regional representatives and programmed into the one store to single YOU out and destroy your integrity.
I've been disappointed by some of Verizon's products and also their staff before - but instead of finding a manager within the store that supported someone I couldn't get a positive interaction with, I just drove 5 to 10 miles in any direction and went to a different Verizon store.
Good luck trying to get good service from a Verizon Rep based on the computer notes now!
I've been with Verizon for 10+ years (also have unlimited data). I've been pretty happy with their service. I typically call 611 when I have issues rather than visiting a call. The stores #1 (and seemingly only) objective is to sell devices. They have no interest in handling returns/defects/etc. I've actually called 611 from within a store when a sales rep told me something wasn't covered.
The information they told you could have been true and false at the same time. Did they have several brand new V10's in inventory? Yes. Did they have refurbed V10's in inventory to issue as replacements? No. Most companies will not give you a brand new phone as a replacement. A manager can choose to give you one but that's few and far between. Though Verizon (in terms of the big 4 carriers) is your best bet at getting such replacement.
Next time try calling 611. They'll ship you a replacement and give you a return label for the defective one.
All in all, your experience is still better than you'd expect from AT&T. Wanna test that? Ask a Verizon rep to send you a text or e-mail (written confirmation) of something. They will. I've been fighting AT&T U-Verse since July for a bill that I don't owe. Every month they bill me, every month I call and explain, and every month some rep (or manager) has said not to worry and they've removed it from my account. EVERY SINGLE REP has told me they're not allowed to send any e-mails, texts, faxes, or mail...no written confirmation. I got my first collection letter last week. It's my word against theirs. Sorry POS company!

1. I'm glad you pointed out the issue about exchanges vs. Refunds. Note to all: if you are still in your two week return window and have an issue DO NOT EXCHANGE. RETURN FOR REDUND ONLY. They will not tell you if you are receiving a refurbished phone. Demand a new phone. I can't believe I made this mistake because I had exactly this same experience 6 years ago with Droid X. They kept giving me refurbished phones one after the other until I was in my 9th return. Verizon have very poor if nonexistent quality control testing of refurbished phones. I'm going to have to give hard thought to returning this phone if they confirm that it's a refurb, even if I have to eat the $35 restocking fee. Given how the manager of the store couldn't be bothered to leave the back room I have no issue with giving him a return.
2. Yes AT&T is bad, Sprint is Worse and Tmobil I once caught red handed doing something shady on international calls which I reported to the State Attorneys and FCC. But Verizon leads them all for expensive service. The expectation of competent and non-shady service goes up. This all unfortunate because I reward straight shooters with long term loyalty. I would expect this from a fly by night Cell phone company but not an established company with millions of shareholders.
Was the Droid X that long ago? I loved that phone.

I've never had issues with Verizon by phone conversation. but going to a Verizon retail store is a different story. stay away
I called LG to verify I had a new phone and They said it was. Also, while I was in the phone with them I asked about an issue I was having with a set of refurbished LG 900 Infinium headphones purchased on Amazon. I was told that if you buy LG Bluetooth headphones and have an issue they will send you new unit not a refurbished even though they were refurbs to begin with.
I also called Verizon tech support and they claim that if you go in store for an exchange they can only give you new phones as they don't stock refurbs. If however you make a claim over the phone They will send you refurbished units. Avoid that at all costs if you are in your 14 day return window.

I keep every phone I ever had in my desk as a little museum. I still have my BlackBerry Pearl..the first must have phone all my friends ran out and switched too, the iphone wasn't the first. But the Droid X was the phone I got when I left T-Mobile just to secure unlimited data. When the iPhone 4 was announced still without 4G, I was Android do good.

I sell mine as soon as a better phone is released. That's how I get to try every new phone that will work on Verizon.

i'm not sure how you got so far as to preorder on the phone then schedule an in store pick up. I called about 3 times before actually going through with a purchase on my UDP line and making sure every questions was answered. I then proceeded to get the phone picked the phone and color then the person couldn't proceed. I was then transferred and they clearly explained to me the deal after again trying and not being able to proceed while keeping the UDP line. I then had to wait til my pay period ended. 3 days later I went to the store and did the actual DPP on my UDP line.
Sorry you had a bad experience. I usually avoid the stores at all costs.
I've had generally good experiences with Verizon stores, but tend to do my business online, simply because I don't have to worry about being pushed or "pitched" anything. Recently, my wife's LG G4 was caught in a bootloop (showed LG logo, then went black). After 3 store reps fiddled around with it trying to factory reset it (BTW, it said "Modified" on the menu, but none noticed that fact!) As one of them was processing the warranty replacement, another guy walked into the store with a G4 and it was doing the exact same thing! Anyway, I asked them if there was anything else I could do since my wife wanted to take photos for Christmas (this was on the 23rd) and the replacement was shipping 2-day. They did offer for me to buy a new phone, but her G4 is 6 months old. Anyway, they seemed very helpful to me and I've never experienced what the OP did--doesn't mean it can't happen, but I would say it's rare.
As a small side-note to my story, I happened to be shopping at BJ's Wholesale during the day on Christmas Eve. In the store, there's a Verizon Kiosk, which is actually run by Diamond Wireless. EVERY SINGLE TIME I've done anything through them, they've been amazing. I guess it actually helps to have some degrees of separation from VZW! I told the guy what happened to my wife's phone. I asked him if I could buy a phone, then return it within 14 days without being worse for the wear--which he confirmed. He then suggested I "buy" the V10 as it has a better camera, etc. Since VZW had already issued a warranty replacement G4, he said they couldn't cancel it, but he suggested that I do a "buddy upgrade" (I have 3 total lines eligible), which I did. Unfortunately, my employee discount doesn't allow payment plan, so I was out $300 temporarily. HOWEVER, LG is giving a $100 rebate (Visa Gift Card). Then on top of that, the replacement G4 that will arrive shortly will be all mine--I'm hoping to sell it for at least $200, so I will break even in the long run. The Diamond Wireless guy walked me through everything, answering all my pesky questions and ensuring everything was done properly. The best part is that my wife has an amazing new phone and took many great Christmas photos with it. I like the phone so much, I'm thinking of switching to a V10 myself... I may wait to see if/what HTC releases next (usually March) and if it doesn't suit my fancy, I'm a new LG V10 owner.
Hell yeah the VZW stores are shady! I had to call CS for 3 months to get a 50 dollar credit I was assured was coming to me. I've jumped from Verizon since then, same bull**** just different source at this point
My experiences have been just the opposite. The instore folks have been so helpful. The telehelp people were clueless about all the discounts on my account and completely jacked everything up. The store manager did some creative genius and my account got fixed. His creativity cost me $35 but it saved me over $1,000 in the end. Everytime I've been in to the store I've had great experiences. I've been in so much recently that I practically know all the employees by first name. (Lots of $300 trade-ins of $10 phones. Thank Vzw!)
I'm not trying to negate your negative experiences as I've seen upset people in the Vzw store every time I've gone in. I understand your frustration and writing the letter was probably very therapuetic. However, sending it probably won't make one bit of difference. The stores are meant for one purpose and only one purpose, sign up new accounts and do phone upgrades. They aren't there to do exchanges like Walmart. If they give you a new phone then that means there's one less new phone in the store to sell. Verizon is a business in business to make money. Exchanging a phone doesn't bring them any new money. Like it or not, that's the facts jack.
If you haven't sent the letter yet then don't bother. You'll probably get a nasty note added to your file.
Op.

You can stop right there. Your post here is already tl;dr.
Time to do some serious editing. Ideally, you'll parse it down to a single page. Two pages is the max.
Beyond that, you're into serial killer manifesto territory. The only reason anybody will read beyond the second page is to see if you're just a kook, or if you're actually a threat and they need to report you to law enforcement.
Itt: people who don't know what a sales quota is,so they're surprised a corporate verizon rep is only concerned with a sale. Their quotas are so high their jobs are quite frequently on the chopping block if they take time to actually help customers with issues like this.
It sucks, but that's why I usually go to authorized retailers instead.
There's always two sides. Funny thing is 97% of the shadiness I've seen from T-Mobile AND Verizon was to benefit me. You probably come off as pretentious and entitled over the phone, same as in text.
Sorry you had to go through all that nonsense but its true if its a Corporate store they do not care about customer service I have experienced myself and have been lied to also , its much better to go thru a 3rd party where they will treat you better or customer service and since all the nonsense with corp stores I always avoid them would rather get the phone on ebay or amazon or even craigslist before I go to a corp store cuz all they are interested in is sales vs customer sevices and I have many friends and family memebers with Verizon that have had bad experiences so I beleive you sir and its a shame that it happens cuz they are a huge corp that should not be acting like that and should try to make the customer happy even though there are some customers out there that are worse than the employees cuz they expect to get their way cuz of that stupid saying "The Customer is always RIGHT" which is also aload of bs,Anyways it works both ways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
