[Q] Factory Unlocked S2 and official jelly bean update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to everyone. Sorry if the post does not go here.
I have a factory unlocked Galaxy S2 and wanted to know if there is a way to update it with the official jelly bean update, since the roll out started for some countries i thought maybe i could do the update too. My country didn't recieve the update yet, and when i search for updates, it obviously says theres none. But wanted to know if theres a method, that does not involve rooting or something like that.
Thanks in advanced

Just flash some other countries rom
I.e Spain

Yeah i heard that, but i wanted to know if there was a way to updating it without flashing some rom. Because i cant understand why i can update since my phone is unlocked. I even tried to search for updates without a sim but with no luck.

No.
If you want JB now then you will need to flash Spains or some other countries stock rom via ODIN or flash a custom rom via cwm recovery.

It's about the firmware, not about network status (locked - unlock).
Judging by your nick you are from Argentina-Uruguay. You'll get the update in march.

hahah gastonw you are correct about the country! My phone is from eeuu, but it was updated with ICS from my country, so I suppose I´ll have to wait till march.
Thanks to all for the help

Just flash it via Odin / mobile odin so you can show off running JB while your friends run gingerbread or ICS (or iOS, they always look away going like "argh...I got nothing to show against that spaceship", luv it )

[Q] galaxy s2 wont update

Hi i bought a new samsung galaxy s2 the other day and immediately checked for updates ota. it said an update was available, so i downloaded it and clicked install. the phone rebooted and began updating but once it got to 14 percent it stopped, rebooted then said update was unsuccessful. So i connected to kies and it told me my phone wasnt compatible for updates via kies. any ideas?
Kies is useless, if you really want to update you can use odin yourself... up to you and voids warranty
Try uninstalling and reinstalling but too be honest, forget kies...
hmm. ok. any ideas on why the ota update stops at 14 percent? im on stock 2.3.4 and not rooted.
yes, because kies is rubbish....
settings - about phone - update... Over The Air update is probably not available lol ...
With odin you can flash stock updates... really simple, but get used to the phone and if you want to take the leap, its not difficult but do plenty of reading, it can a bit daunting initially...
Is there anything wrong with your phone or just hungry for the latest version?
OTA is not in use/working for many yet but is supposed to be working when ICS is released .

i9100 stock roms in the stock rom thread al you need is to match modem and csc to location and network .
Rooting has nothing to do with updates or making the phone faster .

You said you're in the US? Then there isn't a stock ROM for the i9100 for your region. I'm in the US too. You should be able to use any from Intratech's official firmware thread just fine. I flashed from XWKE7 for the UK (2.3.3), that came with the phone, to XXKI3 for Poland (2.3.5). Haven't found a need to upgrade beyond that yet, but there are newer versions available.

OTA and Kies won't work for us dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. We'll have to rely on ICS being posted somewhere here.

ahh of course :/ well thanks for the info!

A couple of questions.

got my s3 yesterday and I thought I would try to upgrade officially rather than root straight away. tried kies first but wouldn't work and then I thought I would try the update through the phone but my phone doesn't have that in the about device bit.
so my questions are is there something wrong with my phone? and should I just use odin and flash the latest stock firmware? or which is the best custom firmware that keeps all the stock functions?
my apologies of this has all been covered before.
thanks
First we need to know what firmware have your phone preinstalled.
Type *#1234# in dialer.

Your phone should be able to receive OTA updates, Kies is for most users a pain in the xxx. Best way to update is to flash the updated rom through Odin (see item 2 and 3 in my signature). For custom roms see the developers thread, there are many good rom`s with all the stock features. My preference is what you see in my banner. First read up about rooting, flashing, CWM and stuff to avoid problems
Well, since you are asking in XDA, YES don't wait for OTA or Kies. Use odin to flash original firmware.
Root it as fast as you can
Try every custom roms until you found the one you like the most.
Happy flashing

I appreciate all your answers. I'm not new to to flashing as my last phone was an S2 running wajk miui, just curious as to whether there was something wrong with my phone as it doesn't have the update in about device.
didn't want to root straight away as I'm not convinced I want to keep this phone yet, not impressed with it as I thought I'd be.

You say Kies does not work ???
No update well that begs the question is their an update for your phone .
No OTA in settings About Phone System Update that suggestions that the vendor has removed OTA updates .If so firmware updates are via Kies when the vendor decides to push them out .

[Q] {Q} Official Updates in the uk?

Hi,
My gf has the same phone as me, but I've rooted mine and got Ultimarom 10.1. However she only has ICS. I would like to avoid rooting it, and I'd also like to keep it all official so her insurance will pay out. she does drop it every now and again,
anyway the main thing im concerned with is she keeps having random reboots and she is most likely vulnerable to sds, and less serious problems like media server draining battery. (EDIT:all fixed in my rom lol)
I want to know what is the latest OFFICIAL update for the UK, i9300, using only kies or ota or any other official channels? I would prefer not to use sam mobile.... anyway before i tell her i need her phone for several hours (update restore tidy n setup) I'd like to know if there is a jb update for her available on kies or ota
She's 100% stock.

which carrier is the phone on or is it unlocked? emb5 is the latest unbranded fw im not overly sure in terms of carrier branded fws the only way to check that would be the carriers forums, other people on here with the same carrier or check on sam mobile, but im sure there will be an update to jelly bean if you plug the device in through kies i would have thought because everyone in the uk should have jelly bean by now
Not being funny, but I would trust the Odin flash method far far more than I would trust Kies or OTA
Simple connect to Kies update for that phone is a yes or no .
No then flash latest UK stock from General Firmware thread .Or wait and wait and wait for Kies to get the update for that phone .##
Stock Samsung firmwares via Odin do not invalidate warranty .

She's on O2 and i suspect it's locked. Not checked...
Like I said I don't really want to set her laptop up with kies n everything unless I know there is one... However it's good to know that it won't void the warranty, would her insurance still pay out presuming that I don't break it in the update process?

Massive battery drain and JB update.

Hi,
I'm very sorry if the problem was in other topic, but I looked first 10-12 pages of topics and couldn't find anything. My wive's Motorola RAZR MAXX (european, retail,non-carrier) is still on ICS, newest software availible, but from time to time get massive battery drain from process called Multimedia. Fully charged phone can run out of battery in few hours, get hot like from the furnace and finally turn off out of "juice". We are aware of the problem, that this single process is draining the battery, since we've looked at battery manager and this process is beeing constantly restarting, causing 100% CPU usage and draining battery. Forced-close helps, but this process manage to restart in background and it's stupid to constantly closing it in task manager every time after finishing some tasks that trigger him to start again. So, are there any temporary solutions for this? Is Motorola aware of the problem and will fix this in upcoming JB update? And finally, when EU versions of RAZR/MAXX get official JB update?
Regards, Jacek

I'm really aprreciate the help, but this firmware seems to be a leak, not the official one, so I won't risk bricking phone (wife's), especially, we've got iMac, so no windows program work on it (I presume it's needed for forced flashing via recovery) and I've never done any rooting/flashing myself. I'll have to wait for official update via OTA.
But you've mentioned, that you're familiar with the problem - was it fixed with the JB update in your case?

This may not come.
Only few ROM are updated via OTA: Retail.en.FR, Retail.en.EU, Retail.en.AU, Vodafone.en.EU.
And I think your ROM version is not one of them :/
You need to change ICS to one of upper ROM, and then you can take JB update.

Now wife has rom 672.180.41.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU - why do You think this Rom won't be updated any time soon? I bought this phone from normal store, it has motorola warranty (non-carrier, it's not imported from foreign country), I live in Poland. If you're right how can I make the update SAFELY on on iMac? Is it possible? The problem is getting stronger everyday - process activating himself randomly and sometimes it's too late to switch it off before it do some damage to battery. It's bloody anoying!
I'm sure that ROM 672.180.41.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU won't be updated to JB - This device will remain on Android 4.0.4 (ICS)
You can confirm that at Motorola website (Select Poland and Retail, then Motorola Razr phone):

You need to change ICS to one of updated ROM(Retail.en.FR, Retail.en.EU, Retail.en.AU, Vodafone.en.EU), and then you can take JB update.

As I know you must root your ICS, install Safestrap, install new ICS(one of Retail.en.FR, Retail.en.EU, Retail.en.AU, Vodafone.en.EU), root new ICS, install voodoo ota root keeper and buckup root, install JB update, I think this would look something like this.

I don't think you can just install other version of ICS without rooting.
Well, it’s looks like I’m ****ed up #$% I can’t update without rooting, I can’t root and update because there is no Mac tools for doing this, Motorola won’t plan to update RAZR/MAXX in my third world country to JB (get confirmation from support), and even if I’ll ask someone to make an update for me (if I found someone from near my location who know how to do this without bricking the phone) I still loose warranty because rooting void warranty. If I know all of this earlier I wold have never buy moto phone. Support guy told me that the only thing I can do is to make a factory reset, and if it won’t solve the problem give the phone to warranty. Either way I don’t have many options here – will try to reset phone first, it doesn’t take much time and doesn’t hurt.
But have one more question (maybe lame, but I’ve never done rooting) – since the rooting void warranty, is it possible to make an update to retail.UK JB and then COMPLETELY remove root with any trails it was on phone? So I won’t lost warranty and have newest software? If yes, then it will make sense to look for someone to help me with the whole update process.

Take alook in the dev section and search rsdlite with this tool you can flash 672.180.41.en.eu (fastboot file has a different name)
There are many threads on how to
Then you upgrade to JB
Root is not needed for any of this
dude there will be some big media file on ur SD card which would be not able to read like in my case there was 1.4gb mkv video file which was not readable by mediaproces so it was constantly trying to update the gallery so becuase of such files which are unreadble causes media process to constantly run.....so check ur SD card whether u have any such file...if no then search for dev section for root and flash JB rom....

To be honest it depends on how he unlocked it. It may buy you would have to be complete factory with an unmodified state to get the official updates. Take my carrier for example. They flash a custom rom on it without fixing the modified state so OTA or Keis updates dont work.
why ask in General, and not the help section?

When i try to update via settings i am told "unable to update modified hardware" and kies tells me the device cant by updated. When i get back to oz i was going to flash the telstra stock rom but scared it will carrier lock which is not a biggie because i am with telstra. I would like have phone stock and upgradable . My s2 was always flashed with westgrips ics but i am done with continually updating to keep getting the latest.
It depends exactly how he unlocked it, but I have never seen it saying it can't update modified hardware, normally if you are rooted it would say "unable to upgrade as the system has been modified" (or something very similar) also if you are rooted and have CWM but on a stock rom you should be able to update via Kies.
I would think something dodgy is going on, I would go back to the dealer and show them the OTA update message you got and see what they say

Yes, the error message was similar to the one you said, this has been going on for 3 days, the first one supplied had been rooted and coud not be updated and as soon as I saw CMW I ook it back and asked for one hat had not been tampered with. They exchanged with another new unit which could be updated but when I finally started using it the radio was locked. I then took it back and said it was fixed only to find that they unlocked it using CMW but NO Busy Box (unless they uninstalled it).
Now I have a phone that is the same as the first one but has been updated to 4.1.2, at the same time I bought an S3 for my wife which updated to 4.1.2 and was unlocked from the same dealer. Unfortunately we go into the country in the morning for 2 weeks and cant return to the dealer till I get back to Bangkok.
That is why I asked if I can restore the phone to stock and still be unlocked and unrooted as I dont want ato go down the path of my old S2 and get into a ROM cooking frenzy. I am happy with stock and want to get update as if released look forward to 5.x.x

Well if your looking forward to 5.0 then you will end up flashing a custom rom anyway as this device may see a 4.2 official but doubt it will see an official 5.0
