[Q] POP3 mail won't work on mobile data - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a strange problem I can't resolve.
I have a SGS3, stock ROM (but rooted) and using K9 mail (although I've tried using the native email app and having the same issue, so I don't think it's a K9 problem).
Basically, I can't send or receive mail while on mobile data, but when I'm connected to a wifi network I can send and receive fine.
It only seems to be a problem with POP3 mail. Browsing works fine on either. My exchange email (I use Touchdown) works fine on both. Other connected apps work fine on both.
It's just POP3.
I've double checked the settings in case they somehow changed themselves or were changed by something else. As I said, I setup the same account using the native email app, same issue. It just doesn't connect to the POP3 server, it just sits there and times out. I don't even get a message.
I'm pretty tech savvy but this one has me stumped. I'd really appreciate some advice on how to troubleshoot and resolve this problem please.
Cheers,
Pete

Check with your networks email settings especially the Ports .

That's what's called "****ty provider"; The most probable reason is that your provider blocks access to SMTP/POP3/IMAP except maybe to their own servers.
That is what Telekom Germany does or at least did for a long time.
A not-so-easy but highly workable fix is to use Exchange accounts. Not only will you get (nearly) realtime delivery of your emails but since it leverages the HTTP protocol you bypass port-based restrictions. A PHP-Script e.g. is Z-Push
Easier is to open a VPN connection.

Some also just use a non standard port .
BE UK block port 25 for example .
Worth checking your networks forums .

Thanks everyone so far. I should have mentioned that my wife, an iphone user, isn't having this problem and she's using the same ISP. Therefore if it were a port issue I'd expect her to be having the same problems.

It seems to also be impacting instagram. It won't refresh or upload on 3G but works fine on wifi

Can you get other email accounts using your data connection? Does internet browsing work?

Yes everythings works fine its just mailing through the internet (ive gotten the exact same problem)
i cannot seem to send a mail with my phone :S
(Offtopic maybe related though)
Unfortunate the Internet problem where you auto update stuff like twitter and youtube of facebook. When you set the interval, after it tries updating my internet doesn't work either.

Email not sending (Fixed)

So I have a bell atrix and I have tried to put my Shaw email on it and i'm 100% sure all the settings are correct yet I can not send emails. I can receive them fine. But when I go to send it says authentication error sending.
Settings are as followed:
Incoming is: pop.shaw.ca and the corresponding port.
Outgoing is: mail.1xbell.ca and the corresponding port with neither box checked.
I spent an hour at bell with a lady who was on the phone with tech support and they couldn't fix it.
PS: THIS HAS BEEN FIXED. LEFT THE USERNAME AND PW BLANK
Still need help
Bumping this.
E-mail
To help we need more information.
Please post your current e-mail settings (no passwords)
Hope this helps

Im using shaws pop settings for incoming which work. And bells outgoing which doesn't work.
Outgoing is mail.1xbell.ca
Port 25
neither box checked
Are you connected to Wi-Fi? I believe that if you're using Wi-Fi the bell settings won't work, because you should be using your ISP outgoing credentials.
What outgoing credentials did you try with Shaw?

I tried all the shaw outgoing as well. I have wifi turned off and haven't used it once
I updated the OP.
I've heard of a few people having problems with sending shaw email if they're using a TELUS or Bell device, basically a non-shaw mobile device.
technically, mail.1xbell.ca should work, but you'll have to make sure you don't have the authentication option on the outgoing mail server turned on. (ie. don't use a user/name password).
What outgoing did you use for shaw shawmail.cg.shawcable.net ?
Shaw does not have a dedicated outgoing server. Have you tried setting outgoing server as smtphm.sympatico.ca ? Try and report back.
Please not by using the bell outgoing mail settings u will not be able to send email while connected to wifi. If u use Shaw in and out setting then while connected to wifi which uses shaw as the isp it will work then.
*edit
Port 587 if 25 doesn't work and try with and without authentication.

I tried that server and it didn't work either.
I tried it without my username and pw and I tried it with as well.
To no avail.
Bell and shaw email
Called Bell known issue they are working with Motorola for a fix, I am pissed to as my Milestone and Samsung Galaxy i9000m all worked fine, so I see it as Motorola has altered the Adroid mail app for their liking and screwed it up.
third party apps work fine
I downloaded K9 and it works fine with the Atrix and Shaw, so until Motorola fixes the stock Android app, guess I have to use K9

Are you using shaws outgoing or bells?
Shaw does not support an outgoing, you have to use mail.1xbell.ca and it won't work I called Bell and there are aware of the problem. But K9 does work fine for sending, the stock app works for receiving just not sending.
This is a necro bump. I was wondering if anyone here got it working?
removing outgoing mail server user name and password worked for me. Need Bell tech support to remove from sympatico account as Bell uses a template to set up an account.
morp2
new Atrix, Bell upgrade to 2.2.2
Atrix vs Shaw - fixed
Woo Hoo!! I finally have my Atrix/Shaw thing figured out.
First I had to enable Mobile Access:
shaw.ca - Accessing Shaw email from your Android
1. Go to the "Webmail Beta site" and sign in with your Shaw email and password.
2. Select Preferences then the Mobile Access tab.
3. Select Enabled, enter your existing Shaw password and click Save. If your password does not meet the security requirements, you must change it before Mobile Access can be enabled.
Step three was what was killing me....
After that the Set-up was;
Incoming:
- pop.shaw.ca
- 110
- full email address
- password
-- Left both checks un-checked
Outgoing:
- mail.shaw.ca
- 587
- full email address
- password
-- Left both checks un-checked

Errors connecting to corp exchange server

Hi Guys,
I am connected to the corp Exchange server and most of the times, email works fine. However, there are many times email does not update. And if I try to manually refresh, I get one of the following errors.
- Unable to connect to server
- Unable to open connection to server due to security error
I know my settings are correct and there is no problems with the company Exchange enviornment. Any suggestions?
Thanks
if your settings are fine and no corp network issue, then there's only a couple more options left as the cause. The way I see it, its gotta be either:
1) AT&T network
2) corporate network
3) problem with the phone / incorrect settings
are you stock?
Hi
Good points.I am on serendipity 8. It's strange that it works great at times but then nothing. For example I am up in pa this weekend
And no corp email since last night. I can't even send. But gmail and internet is working fine.

I suppose the obvious of a password expiration or similar? I use both CM7 (Captivate) and Unnamed (Galaxy S2) with two different exchange accounts, plus I use corporate Address book with one, and everything works great. I know that's not terribly helpful, but for what it is worth. Maybe try the corporate address book, see if that works -- might at least validate the overall path and credentials (though you do need to re-enter the credentials).

[Q] GS3 emails wont work over 3G on o2

I am on O2 PAYG on my Galaxy S3, for ages now my emails just will not work over 3G but will work over wifi. This is driving me mad and I cant work out why.
I am using my own personal email address,
When I try and sync emails it comes up with sign-in failed . Wrong username/password but they are correct.
If anyone can help that would be great.
I have tried the stock email app and also the K-9 email app and neither will work. I have also tried resetting APN but that has made no difference.
Does anyone have a solution?

Android OpenVPN connected no MMS

I am using the Google Play Nexus 5 on T-Mobile US.
I am running CyanogenMOD 11 Snapshot M9 hammerhead
Android 4.4.4
OpenVPN for Android
DD-WRT Router using the OpenVPN server
I currently have a phone and VPN connection as described above. It connects and works great. The issue I am having, and have searched xda and google for the answer, is that when the VPN is connected everything works fine, except MMS. The APN is correct, per T-Mobile's website. I can send and receive MMS without the VPN connected. The moment I connect to the VPN my MMS in and out fail. I have read on Cisco's website that android has something blocking MMS when connected to VPN.
So, my question is: Is there any way to remove this block or reroute only MMS traffic outside of the VPN? I do have Android Firewall installed, so iptables is usable to do this.
No one has anything for this?
Having the same issue here.
Sony Xperia Z3 on AT&T
Android 4.4.4
Has anyone ever found a solution/workaround for this? I had this problem on my Galaxy S4 on 5.0.1 and now I'm having the same issue on my S7 on Marshmallow. Thanks!

The only "solution" I found, but did not feel it was the true answer, was just a workaround. I noticed that when I am hooked to wifi as well MMS fail to send and to receive. I just have to turn it off and wait for the message than turn it back on. Sucks I know, but it works.

That's a bummer! My biggest problem is receiving messages. I don't get any notification that it's trying to receive a message so I don't even know one is trying to come in.

I do get these messages, but I am using a third party MMS/SMS client (ChompSMS) that tells me when it is trying to receive something.

I may have found a solution but I still need to do more testing. When looking through the settings of some messaging apps I've noticed some give you a "MMS Behavior" option. In Textra it says:
Code:
Try 'System' if legacy MMS isn't work (for example with Project Fi, VPNs, WiFi MMS, etc).
So I set it to System and so far it seems to be working fine while being connected to my VPN. If I change back to "Legacy" or to a different default messaging app without that option it seems like they stop coming through again.
So far I've only tested this with pictures messages and haven't had a chance to try group texts yet. ChompSMS has the option in there but I've only tested it with Textra. I'm using a Galaxy S7 on Verizon so I'm not sure if that affects anything either.
Well, I tested it in ChompSMS, but no luck.

I would bet this is because the MMS server only allows the carrier IP Range. If it's blocking over Wifi as well that would prove that it's not just VPN that is causing it. I would imagine you could receive MMS from anywhere if you have a way of getting your mobile/carrier IP address. (Some sort of proxy(?))

I haven't used these in a while, but when I did they both worked over wifi. Textra and 8SMS. See if installing either one helps, if not uninstall.
But beware, if your provider doesn't support MMS over wifi you won't be able to use it, here is the warning from 8sms on MMS settings:
MMS over Wifi
If your cellular network (ie. Sprint) supports mms over wifi, you can enable Settings » MMS Settings » MMS over Wifi.
If your cellular network does not support mms over wifi (or you are not sure), then DO NOT enable MMS over Wifi or mms will stop working.

I believe T-Mobile USA does support MMS over wifi

I had issues with having my VPN active and not getting SMS/MMS messages while connected. Went looking for an answer and found that there wasn't any one single solution for it so I thought I'd post what worked for me. FWIW I'm on T-Mobile USA with Android 6.0.1.
Within my VPN configuration I went to the 'Allowed Apps' tab and excluded my SMS/MMS programs and processes. Namely I made sure Textra, Messenger, and MmsService were all excluded from the VPN and this resolved my issue. After disconnecting and reconnecting the VPN my text messages are sent and received without issue.
Was a pain in the butt for me as I have tasker setup to bring my VPN to life whenever it's not connected to my home wifi network. Took me a day or two to notice that text messages weren't going anywhere while the VPN was active. Oddly enough being on my home wifi network along with wifi calling being active has never caused an issue with SMS/MMS not working, but having a VPN active did.
I have switched to the Nexus 6P and am running rooted stock 7.1.1 (beta). Still with T-Mobile. I still have issues with MMS on wifi and on VPN, but no issue with SMS. It is strange. Maybe it is time to ask T-Mobile.
