Also interested in knowing this since If you unlock bootloader you can't undo it and your warranty is basically gone forever?
So even if it's now possible to unlock the bootloader it's still not a very customer friendly version like it is on most other android phones? Didn't HTC get a lot of grief for basically the same thing and it ended with them making it possible and if I don't remember wrongly here they even provided a tool themselves so you could do it "legally"? Had a Wildfire before but it's been a while so I can be remembering this wrong. Isn't android supposed to be open source, seems kind of wrong to then use hardware locks that prevent you from actually modifying the software. But I guess that's a completely other discussion.

i had a wildfire s too. i was able to re-lock bootloader it was great. now i unlocked the L9. thought that icould revert it back. and if something happens, no warranty great

Cool Cool. Great.
But I still think unlocking opens new horizons for flawless use of custom rooms, recoveries, kernel experiments , etc. There is a thread saying Relocking is possible. Then why not unlock now?

No jelly bean rom for locked mini pro yet??

I keep searching and asking for jb rom on locked mini pro, but what I see we have several jb rom but only for unlocked bootloader..I hope our dev will consider to release a jb for locked bootloader mini pro..I really want to taste jelly bean and feel the 'project butter', I know some of you will said just unlocked the bootloader but I cannot, cause my fastboot is disable and I do not have access to pay to enable it..

But they said they are working on. You can only keep waiting!
Btw why can't you unlock bootloader? Service Menu bootloader unlock:no or branded rom?

I think this one seems complicated, but if you'll focus and read carefully, it'll turn out to be more friendly than on the beginning http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1730874

3. Go to Service Info... Configuration... And see whats there in Rooting Status. If it reads like:
Code:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Rooting Status:
Bootloader unlock Status: No
so it turns out you can't unlock it by any method.
There won't be any JB ROM for locked bootloaders because Sony hasn't (and won't) release an official JB upgrade.
ROMs marked as "for locked bootloader" are always based on official releases (this includes Ice Cream Pureness).
Your phone seems to be carrier-locked, and unlocking that thing will cost you.

Warning: The New Verizon OTA has a bootloader in it.

Don't be shocked if you end up with a locked device.
If you care about an unlocked bootloader, you may want to pass on it.

It means Verizon made a patch so you can't use the unlock bootloader method from the last software version.
I wonder if this was to patch that exploit for the exynos processor reported a few weeks back. The side effect of course is a relocked bootloader. That's why I didn't understand why everyone was bringing so much attention to it. Let's pray that Adam can unlock this new bootloader.
The OTA is a side effect of a relocked bootloader, not the fix itself. The original exploit didn't use the Exynos exploit, so I doubt it matters, UNLESS the new bootloader in the OTA has closed the original unlock method.
The exploit needed to be patched. Wayyy too easy for malware to exploit it and screw you.

What if we use insurance to replace our phones and we get one with this locked bootloader? Or what about people buying new phones? My wife's iPhone 4 was actually more valuable with iOS 5 than iOS 6. The iSheep still do not have a jailbreak for iOS 6.

Thanks for this information. I already learned the hard way on my Transformer Infinity to never update before unlocking. This will give me a reason to unlock my Note 2, root it, and install CleanROM, which is also what I have on my Infinity.

Reverting back to stock is so easy....all you need to do is odin flashing stock tar file....which will relock and unroot your phone with working OTA update. And I was referred to current rooted rom users. I don't think they need to be re-unlocked nor re-rooted. Flashing another updated rom and kernel will pretty much take care of everything. Besides, adrenalyne already has bootloader safe OTA update working......so there is no point of worrying. However, if someone is planning to buy a new phone and needs his or her phone updated, then yes.
just unlock it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36895425#post36895425

if I used Odin to flash a completely stock tar image with just a root injected into it and then did the ota would I still be rooted? and what does the ota add anyways

Fixes the exynos exploit, locks the bootloader, and updates the radio. Possibly some other minor patches looking at the patch file sizes.
Stay away from the ota unless you use the safe one I created in another thread. Ignore AdamOutler's comment in this thread as it turned out to be wrong and people got locked up in the process.

Depends on the kernel. I couldn't tell you with third party kernels, but the latest stock one from the ota closes the exploit and is safe to flash.
Ok thank you, I have that perseus kernal or something like that with the overclock feature. Learn something new everyday lol

[Q] About Unlocked and Roms

Well my case is like this!
I'm looking to buy a motorola photon online,it was on spring and it suposed to be unlocked for every carrier. i'm from mexico, we use telcel.
The motorola photon only comes with GB android, and i've always like to modify my phones with roms, root, etcs.
Before i do any transaction i'd like to know if i can instal ICS roms or any other cooked roms without loosing the unlocked carrier?.
I know that theres a lot of ways on unlocking carriers like imei and other programs, but if i loose it, the unlocking is gonna cost me something?
Unlocking the bootloader is only to install roms? or i can do an unlocking carrier by unlocking the bootloader? it cost me anything?
This method by Lokifish Marz is to unlock bootloader or carrier???
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20331623&postcount=6
I had been investigating about that but i dont find an straight anwser! im sorry if this looks to newbish, i know if i open the bootloader i can install another kernels and roms, but i loose the 4G :crying::crying: and if the cel is 2.3.5 it can´t be unlocked! it has to be downgrade!
i hope you can helpme! thanks a lot!

unlocking bootloader and installing a custom rom will not make you lose sim unlock

sim unlocking is usually only possible via SOLD sim unlock codes so yes, if you need to sim unlock you have to pay

unlocking the bootloader is done to be able to flash custom recovery, custom ROMs and custom Kernels, improving the performance and usability of your device

bootloader unlocking and carrier unlocking are not related. bootloader unlocking can be done for free by yourself with the help of the info here in XDA. SIM unlocking requires a code you usually have to buy.

losing 4G shouldn't be of much concern to you. Telcel doesn't use WIMAX 4G so you wouldn't have had any use to it anyway.

if the cell is 2.3.5 already it cannot be unlocked and you CANNOT downgrade it because you risk HARD brick
The sim is only locked in US.
All other sims work.
But stuck on GB. Even if you could flash ICS the photons kernel is so old the video doesn't work well.

No, there is no way to root without unlocking the bootloader. You must unlock the bootloader to root the phone.
Of course, unless you find and build a functional exploit which will allow you getting elevated priviledges with locked bootloader NSO Group probably has something at hand, but not sure that you'll be able to afford it.

You will never be able to root without unlocking the BL. Just forget this idea.
