It is not possible to root without pushing root . zip files via recovery.

Rooting this beast i have to install the custom recovery then push root.zip like superuser. Then when update OTA come out just update that or using RUU.zip to flash it in recovery?

OTA may or may not work on a rooted One, we haven't had one, so we don't know. That said, I never depend on my carrier to push out an update, I run custom roms so don't care at all about an OTA

[Q] How to update to android 4.3 with a custom recovery installed?

So I finally got the official 4.3 T-mobile update for my HTC One, and if I download the update, it just brings me to my custom recovery which is TWRP, is there a way that I can just install from my recovery? Or will I have to find my stock recovery and do it that way, please be very descriptive thanks!
Have to be stock recovery and unrooted to update via the OTA.
Any luck updating with twrp

Safest way to root S4 MDK build running 4.2.2?

Im asking if there's any fool proof ways to root this configuration because i just bought the phone and dont wont to brick it like my s3 hard bricked. Any help or comments appreciated, thinking about just updating to 4.3 and waiting for a root method with that.

Don't update. You'll lose your ability to have a real custom recovery. Just stay on MDK and root. Then you can go ahead and flash a 4.3 ROM.

Should i factory reset and root before activating the phone with verizon?
I personally would just root, install custom recovery then wipe. After that pick a rom as most have ota updates disabled. Or install titanium backup pro and freeze the update apk's (I forget the file names)

Ok, is it safe to activate and root as long as i stop the OTA update?or just root and then activate? thanks for the replies by the way
Either way you do it just do not take the ota. I always root first and install custom recovery

Root now or wait for kitkat update

Hey all. Finally decided to root my one. Does it make sense to wait for it's kitkat ota update and then root ? Would this change any of the steps in the root process?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
You should wait, if you root you can download a Rom that is 4.4.2. But things like WiFi calling doesn't work.
Go ahead and root. After a official 4.4.2 is released someone will put out a custom ROM that will already have root as well so why wait

I just s-offed using firewater now, as it's possible the exploit could be patched in the next update...

Yes s-off that might be patched until a new exploit like gustav said and also imo a custom recovery to have some fun and trying out a few custom roms while you wait for an update just remember to use the update you need a locked bootloader and IIRC you need a stock recovery both not hard to get (someone plz correct me if im wrong about recovery)
Thanks guys I rooted but have been having trouble getting some tethering apps to work I think my kernel is write protected? Can anyone recommend a rom that has cool customization stuff and is also good with tethering?

Edit - I flashed insertcoin and the tethering works great.

Request: Root-Free Stock Rom?

Does anyone have a stock rom that is root-free or unrooted? I firgured I would ask while the phone is still fresh. Can we have it as a twrp backup or flashable zip. I see we have a couple rooted stock roms. But I'd like to have a backup that has never been rooted. Thanks
Edited , read your posting wrong. No there isn't a ruu or ota released to us yet.

I'm aware. Not quite what I'm asking for. Maybe someone is still on stock after Twrp installed before rooting. Also, the devs have stock roms up that are rooted. Just requesting one that is not rooted

Anyone to run the Vzw 4.4.2 update on TWRP?

Is there anyway to run the update from Verizon on TWRP? Every time it tries to update it reboots into the custom recovery. I know the file for the update is on the phone. Does anybody have the name of it or how to run it?

If you want to take the OTA you need to revert back to stock recovery.
There is a ROM that is pretty much the same as the 4.4.2 OTA in the development section that can be flashed via TWRP
Hey if you want PM me and I'll help you revert back to stock with keeping your root and updating to KitKat and getting your recovery back. There is no way at all to use the Verizon OTA with a custom recovery.. It is rebooting to TWRP because by default when flashing the OTA it is meant to boot to your stock recovery which is designed to flash carrier updates. When it hits TWRP it fails because it sees that its not the stock recovery. You need to either fastboot back the stock recovery which is in Flyhalfs recovery thread or you need to RUU.. But in any event I'm here if you want some solid help and I can get it done quickly for you...
