Need help finding insecure kernel please - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, My names Drew, and I just recently joined xda to tinker around with my phone and explore the possibilities that the manufacturers apparently didn't want us to have. I have had my phone for quite a while and I felt it was time to play with it some more. I am have the Samsung Galaxy S2, it is StraightTalks version of it, here are the details on it found through the about-phone.
Firmware: 2.3.6
BasebandVersion: S720C.01 VLI02
Kernel Version: [email protected] -55 #2 PREEMPT Wed Sep 12 10:20:26 KST 2012
I was not sure of which information was needed to get a insecure kernel version, as I could not find anything specifically geared to my phone on these forums. I was unable to directly post on the developers thread due to my low post count (which I would hope should soon get higher as time moves on). So basically, to the point, what insecure kernel should I use since I am a first time rooter? I understand everything here in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414 except for step two when it's talking about kernal versions.

I moved your question to a new thread in the proper forum where someone can help you out.

Ah ok sorry about that, I just saw the Feel free to ask questions here thread and thought it was ok to post in that one for this specific question. Thanks for moving it though, I might get some help if it is in the right forum.

I am not sure(gb is old school) but your kernel version isn't exactly shown, and your current kernel already kinda looks like a insecure kernel, I suggest that you dial *#1234# check the pda info and since the kernel usually matches the firmware(pda) version get one kernel according to that.
Edit: Safer thing to do would be to upgrade to JB and rooting it(which is fairly easier I think).

Ok I dialed *#1234# and I get a verizon operator saying this. "Welcome to Verizon wireless. Your future/feature? update could not be completed. Please try your call again". JB = Jellybean? How do I update my phone to that, I tried to do a system update and it says my phone's already up to date.

Just get a stock jb operating system from sammobile and flash via Odin, there are a lot of threads that cover those matters, read stickied threads, it's a really easy and simple procedure, just be careful not to make mistakes (like suddenly flashing pit files).

I went on sammobile, and looked through their firmware list and mine was not even on there. So that brings me to my next question, since mine is a straight talk phone, and is NOT on the list, is there a possibility that my phone will be bricked flashing a stocked jb operating system to it?

What do you mean by "straight talk" is it some kind of network operator, and are you using some kind of network unlocked device (I am asking because you mentioned Verizon), I will tell you one simple thing though if your device model( as given in the about phone - >model number) is GT-I9100 then it's safe to flash any i9100 JB firmware (especially since you're on GB) if the phone gets sim locked or something you can use the unlock apps available here or in the playstore to unlock it.

When people mention US carriers the first question you ask is:-
'The sticker on the phone chassis, under the battery; what does it say ?'

It was actually SCH-S720C, sorry I was being a busybody on android area51, I managed to solve my own issue and root my phone. With all the trouble of trying to figure out which insecure kernel I needed to flash, I found out that my phone is actually the Samsung Proclaim, even though I have never heard my phone be called that before. And yes it was Straighttalk, its like Net10. Sorry to leave everyone who replied since my last reply hanging, I have been very busy lately. Thanks for replying on my thread to help me out.

[Q] How to Root Samsung Galaxy S2 SGS2 with version 2.3.6 KK6?

I apologize if I did not find the answer I needed on your forum threads I did do a little searching but I cant seem to find an easy way to Root my SGS2 version 2.3.6 KK6. Can someone direct me to the right page and or tell me how if their is no current post. Also what guide should I follow if I want to install APK files on my phone like Modern Combat 3, and so on. Please help me and again I apologize for being a total NOOB! tnx!
Also is there any general driver or anything I should download to my computer I was using ADB commands with my samsung captivate but now I upgrade to the SGS2. Also my battery dies in about 4 hours of constant use and I usually have no apps running unless im on the phone and i was wondering if any roms your might recommend or market place apps to help with my battery life. The phone is pretty much still stock besides the update to 2.3.6 thanks for any help or insight...Tnx Again!

You are in the US? Are you an AT&T? Did you get your Galaxy SII directly from AT&T?
If you answered yes to all these questions, you are in the wrong forum. You either have an SGH-I777, or an SGH-I727 (Skyrocket).
Do NOT follow the directions or flash anything in those links above posted by golcheck. (no offense, golcheck)
If you have an I777, the damage would have been minimal. Things just would have been weird, capacitive keys may have been mapped wrong, etc.
If you have an I727, the damage would have been severe. That phone has a completely different CPU/GPU combo.
EDIT: check the label under your battery. That will have a definitive model number there.
I have a phone directly from att with the latest update from them. Which is 2.6.35.7 i just now seen. I just want to be able to install apks thats all, will these threads help? Also thank you so much for your heads up, and its a samsung i777

Yup, you're in the wrong place. Go to the I777 forum. I linked it in my post above.
Thanks for replies. I'm not from States and I'm not using AT&T. It's pure Samsung version.

can you guide me to the right file i need to root it
using gingerbread

[Q] I give up....Help ??

Not exactly a newb. I have flashed custom roms rooted phones and other advanced things but there seems to be an awful lot of different ways to do what i want to do. This is literally my first time asking for help i can always find the answers i need maybe im just getting old
Phone information
Bell Canada
Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000M
3.0.15-19100MUGLD3-CL377577
IM74K.UGLD3
Ok i want to root it that's it nothing fancy some apps i use need superuser to run so .... ya. Really im looking for the easiest least painful way to do this i looked at the Siyah kernel that looks like a winner but is it really necessary to change the whole kernel ? I have no intention for the foreseeable future of using custom roms or anything like that quite pleased with the stock one for now plus it's a brand new phone really am not in the mood to brick it or do something silly yet maybe in another year lol . Anyone got a step by step process to root it even it it requires a kernel change then so be it i would also like recommendations on what kernel to use in that case software to use etc etc.... I would appreciate anyone who can take a few minutes to help out .
Thanks !

I understand your concerns but Siyah is really what you need. For daily usage you will not see a difference to a stock rom other than some speed increase and better battery life so it’s winner at all fronts I think Also simple flashing odin version of Siyah is a lot safer than messing with stock rom’s and rooting programs. Not mentioning a lot easier and faster. For your consideration.

For the firmware you quoted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/GT-I9000M
Best to check your actual product code and model number on the device. BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING.

Ok so just want to make sure i get this right. I read there was no specific kernel for our phones (bell) so if i want to stay close to stock it looks like i would use CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5.zip and odin . Or i can use Siyah looking at Siyah-v3.3.1 already have it downloaded any problems with that version are there better more stable ones i should use instead ?
I guess i can use Odin for either ?
Enter download mode
click pda select file
click start
done ?
No need to wipe anything is there ?
Yep. Go for it. Any will do it .
I've used SiyahKernel allot and it's been great. It will install touch CWM recovery as well so you can nandroId backup your while ROM. Lots of other bells and whistles too, but no one forces anyone to use or tweak them off you don't want.
Flashing these kernels (via Odin) increase your flash counter and warning triangle on boot.
For ICS firmware use Chainfire Triangle Away app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22463153#post22463153
For GB use USB jig (depending on bootloader version) or follow Chainfire method in his CF-root thread.
You could also use zergrush root method and no CWM recovery.
**Most important; backup your EFS folder. If this ever gets corrupted , it is difficult to repair, mostly cannot and phone will not be able to make cellular connection.** Edit: EFS file its where your IMEI is located, without it any Carrier won't recognise the SIM.
Just search here in XDA and there are also a number of root app In Google Play.

You can upgrade it and there is plenty of threads here about it. I suggest you to read more before doing anything.
Basically if your phone is rooted, get Odin, download ROM you want and flash it according to instructions.

No.
If you have all the tutorials you need then follow them.
End of topic.
PS: if you have a clear question then ask it first but dont reply to someone helping you by "I have all the tuto I need" but I have X or Y question.
It works like this here: you ask a clear question nicely, you will probably get a clear answer.
Anyway your topic sucks because that's a lack of respect for all those who bothered putting a tutorial to explain how to do.
You can not use a basic search and yet want to "upgrade your phone"??

You can flash any ROM designed for your phone model. You might want to use one which is released for your region so your modem works well.

The M250K in your baseband version makes me think this is a Korean variant? Personally I'd probably ask a question in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097347 before flashing anything.

U might try downloading the ROM for ur device, then follow this steps:
1. Copy the ROM to Ur memory
2. Put in into Recovery Mode (when the phone is booting press (VOLUME UP + HOME)
3. Depending of the ROM u gonna flash u ll follow the steps for the installation, but remember before flashing any ROM different to the one u already have always WIPE DATA TO FACTORY.
4. Flash the ROM
5. Restart
Note: Ur phone doesn't need to be rooted to change the ROM

The website is called xda developers, not xda beginners. Pretty much everybody is writing tutorials and ROMs etc is doing it on their own time, for free. That time they have spent is a lot longer than the time it would take you to read a little and understand exactly what you need. So many people manage to change their firmware every day thanks to this site, without clogging up the message board with the same question that god knows how many people have already pointlessly posted this week alone.

THANK YOU SO MUCH it worked fine for reading the arabic text and I installed the GO keyboard for writing, I was afraid that it will corrupt my firmware but you encouraged me, and it runs good ... only sometimes brings application not responding -force close- but I'm OK with it, but will be nice if there are some ways to get rid of it??
The instructions in the firmware were probably written before AT&T put out the first Gingerbread update. I remember that thread about arabic in the development section when the phone was first released.

I was making an assumption without really knowing. Assumptions can get you into trouble sometimes, because they are often wrong.
I was assuming that the installation instructions were written before UCKK6 was released. But it may be that it is not fully compatible with UCKK6, and that is why the FC's. But on the other hand, maybe it caused FC's on UCKH7, and the version is not an issue. Or maybe you just need to reinstall it, or wipe and reinstall it... or...
I shouldn't really be posting or talking about this because I have absolutely zero experience with it.

[Q] What are consequences of using wrong CSC & more?

Hey,
Please forgive me if this and following questions have been answered already. I'm casual reader of XDA Forums. Before posting this thread I've done a lot of searching and reading (it took me past 2 hours) and still I'm unsure as to the answer.
I hope it's perfectly fine to have more questions in the thread than one.
All I could find about my current phone and rom running on it:

So to the point. I'm curious if there are any consequences of flashing ROM and not using the correct CSC,
I wanted to flash latest JB on my phone - the official stock ROM from Spain. I'm afraid of doing it because I'm not sure what will happen.
Will my phone be debranded?
Some background info: I bought the phone in Poland. Flashed stock ICS ROM with multiCSC and chose XEO as you can see in the screenshot above. Now I'm living in Denmark. I'd like to get the latest JB on my phone, debranded. What should I do?
Another small question - where can I get the latest version of Odin? I've been looking for some official site for it but to no avail. It seems that I'm too stupid for that.
Thanks in advance for your time and hopefully an answer to my questions (also if any further arise).
NB Sorry for using wrong terms throughout the post - I'm kinda newbie to all of these.

After running the "Got brickbug?" app it appears that mine phone is affected by it. Should I wait for the official OTA then?
Also there are still few questions unanswered from the OP. I'd like to know that stuff.
Brickbug is a hardware problem but only matters if you have a kernel that is not patched for it. Just don't wipe or format the phone till you are sure you have a kernel that is safe.

Brick bug was a start, I assume you've done more reading about all those answers you were looking for.
CSC will work for every I9100, you were reffering to MODEM.
Go ahead and flash jb from spain, if your network doesn't work (unlikely but possible) you'll have to flash another modem.
And yes, your device will be fully unbranded.
