[Q] Update firmware on stock Rom but rooted phone - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm still running stock 4.1.1 but my phone is rooted. It won't accept the 4.2 update and 4.3 will be available soon (already got 4.3 for my Nexus). How do I update without losing the root?

use mobile odin pro it is in the play store. $5 or $6 . there is an option called everoot. it will inject supersu directly into the rom. you can download any 4.12 stock rom from sammobile.com put it on your external sd card then flash with mobile odin .

Will I be able to flash 4.2 and also 4.3 when it's released?

all firmwares from sammobile can be flashed with odin. including the leaked 4.2 which has been available since june. Being rooted may prevent you from upgrading ota but not with odin

Read the "read before rooting" link in my signature.
Btw, there is no 4.2 update and 4.3 is MILES off

just noticed you are with sprint. it is my understanding that sprint devices are cdma . the GT-I9300 is an international gsm phone. it is different in its hardware than the us variants . if the model number of you phone is not GT-I9300 than you are in the wrong forum. Be very careful and do not flash any firmware that is not specific to your device. you can BRICK YOUR PHONE.

When I went to Sammobile, I typed in SPH-L710 in the firmware section and it pulled up the cdma file for 4.1.2. However, I was unable to download it. Each time, it failed after 1-12K and the file is 833 MB. Do you have a link for better download site?

This is the wrong forum you do not have I9300/I9305 .
You are presumably from USA then read the USA sticky at the top of every page .

My phone has been rooted for 6 months. If it weren't, then I would have been able to use the OTA update.

no I do not. another option is to upgrade through kies. you will lose root. but you probably can root again after updating, you might find a torrent copy of the file to download if you prefer odin. good luck. also please post in the sprint forum . It is assumed if you are posting in this forum that you have the GT-I9300 . any help or advice you get here may not be applicable to your device and may even cause you to damage it.

So true. They should probably skip 4.2.2 and directly get on with 4.3 (q3/q4 maybe)

It wasn't relevant that you're already rooted. My point is, this is something you should have known before rooting, which is why the thread "read before rooting" has the answer to your question.
Although since you don't even have this phone, all bets are off.

[Q] I need help returning to stock GB 2.3.5 ROM

I was on Samsung GT-I9100 / I9100XXK14 / 2.635.7-I9100XXK14 before rooting and flashing custom roms. On 2nd flash I lost all sms and call logs (nothing else) while using Titanium Backup Pro. I also had backed up in Kies. But found out I can't restore from Kies becuz it doesn't recognize custom rom. Purchased TB after I lost original XXK14 firmware due to a botched backup on my part. Can anyone help me get back to my XXK14 firmware temorarily so I cans restore sms and call logs?

Hey search the forums lots of helpful threads to use odin to flash back a stock rom.
Heres a link to a specific stock rom, KI4 is in the list.

Saw this link earlier but the XXK14 download link is broken and I'm not knowledgable as to what other stock roms I can use here in the U.S. on AT&T (not sure that carrier is an issue other than the fact ATT is GSM / HSPA+ 21 Mbps). I'd really appreciate directions to an alternate XXK14 link and/or another compatible GB 2.3.5 stock firmware.

Here is what you need to do
1. Get Check FUS downloader: LINK
2. Run FUS Select you Carrier / Region / Model and Download the Stock firmware for your phone.
3. Backup anything you need. You will need to wipe the data and the cache from Recovery mode before you flash the downloaded Fware..
4. Use ODIN and Flash the Downloaded Stock Firmware to your phone. You will loose the root access and you should have your stock back. Yeah before Install Wipe data and cache.
Lemme know if that works. If any doubt... just ask. Dont do anything wrong i'll try to help if i know the answer.

Did you try the "firmwares" link??
I have concerns about you flashing your phone if you can't navigate a website... No offense. I'm not trying to be insulting, but it's really easy to find.
Hi guys,
I'm a newbie so please bare with me. I have a Virgin Mobile UK Samsung Galaxy S2 which was on Gingerbread 2.3.4 or 5. I foolishly flashed it yesterday to yes you guessed it, ICS 4.0.3. Now as far as the phone itself is concerned, everything is working pefectly fine. No issues whatsoever except now I've noticed that my carrier has changed to T-Mobile UK even though the phone has full functionality on the Virgin network still? Also I get the "This device cannot download firmware" message now when connected to Kies.
Have I totally ruined my phones chances of downloading any official firmware in the furture now? And how can I correct the display of my carrier? I'm guessing I will have to find a stock ROM from somewhere and re-install. But doesn't that do something to a ROM install counter someware on the phone?
Thank you in advance.

You are fine. Nothing has gone wrong. Use the FUS and get the stock firmware for you phone. Flash it via ODIN... Read the above few posts.
For your Flash counter and Bin counter, You can reset it back to zero. Look for Triangle.apk . TO use that you need to have a rooted device. Super user permissions... so run Triangle while you have rooted device? If not then root it to reset the bin or flash counter ( If you want) or just flash back the stock Fware..
No you havent ruined you phone. You can download all official firmwares. Just wait for the offical ICS for your region.
Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. So just to clarify... If I re-install the stock firmware there will be no need to root the device and install the program that resets the counters?
Also, I've noticed that Virgin Mobile UK isn't listed under my territory?
Thanks again.

It seems you are confused. Or are you just struggling to read english? What one do you see that is rooted?
The ones you have been directed to (stickied at the top of the General section, linked above by pier10) are the same one, (but are hosted on different download sites) and it is NOT rooted, but both pages have instructions on how to root if you want. If you don't want root, just ignore the rooting instructions.
As far as Kies, it will update only if you are still on an official stock Samsung firmware, with the correct CSC for your country. If you haven't flashed any firmwares yourself yet, this is a good bet. But you will have to wait until Samsung updates their servers for your region to say your phone is eligible for an update.

New Rom, No Back UP, What now?

So, I installed a Rom without a backup and I'd like to go back on the factory stock ROM.
I'm in Canada on Telus S3 SGH-i747 factory rom…can anyone help??
I did go on the samsung site but the feature to find the proper version based on the country doesn't seem to work on my phone (To obtain them simply open dialpad and type: for PCode *2767*4387264636# and for PDA/PHONE/CSC *#1234#.)
Now, I'm stuck with this ROM that isn't working too well, I don't have a backup, KiES won't recognize my phone in windows, what to do?
Anyone have a factory ROM for the above model? What are my options?
(PS: I learn my leason - back up!)
1. Search for checkfus
2. Download it
3. Use checkfus to download stock rom (use google and xda to find out how)
4. Reflash stock using odin
No worries and good luck

[Q] Update to Jellybean

Hello,
I want this to be a personal question about how to update my phone to Jellybean 4.1
First of all, as u can all see in the screenshot, I don't have software update in my phone,it's a branded Orange phone.
Over Kies my phone is not connecting to it. I have done a ton of solutions, no succes.
So I came here to ask you how can I update my Samsung Galaxy S3 to Jellybean with Odin starting from my screenshot, I mean from baseband i9300bvle4 w/o damaging my phone.
Please, give me some steps like you make for newbies.
Best Regards,
Go grab the latest stock JB from

[Q] Problem in upgrade OS from Ginger bread to JB

HI,
I have recently bought Samsung galaxy S2 from Ebay. It is original Samsung galaxy S2. Surprisingly i got a note from the seller that i cannot upgrade the OS.
The current version info :
==================
Modul No: GT-I9100
Android version : 2.3.4
Baseband version : 9100XXKG1
Kernal Version :2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526 [email protected]#2
Build Number : GINGERBREAD.XXKG1
I tried using Kies software to upgrade my OS. But this software does not list any new firmware for upgrade.
So i don't know how to upgrade to the latest OS.
Also if there are any problem during up-gradation will i be able to revert back to old firmware.
Sincere thanks
Hey bro! Did u try to install it via odin?
