HTC Refuses warranty S on/Locked - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

I recently sent my HTC one to HTC for resetting issues, I was issued an out of warranty fee. How did they find out my device had been unlocked at one point? I used revone to lock my device and I s on.. I'm running the new tmobile 1.44 patched firmware. Im wondering if HTC has created some sort of flash counter like Samsung??

That's actually pretty interesting. Why did you send it to HTC rather than T-Mobile though?

Maybe the unlock code being used and associating itself with the phone?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

Was it a hardware issue? You should be able to call them and have that waived. They cannot legally refuse to honor the hardware warranty because an unlock code was issued... even if they could prove you actually used it.

Because my device was SIM unlocked and didn't want some crappy refurb..tmobile is hell to get a SIM unlocked pin

HTC is claiming it was overheating that caused the issue which is directly the cause of unlocking my device. I still deny the device was ever locked. HTC said there engineers have a way to detect if the bootloader has ever been tampered with..maybe revone leave traces?

yea i immediately call BS on HTC for that. even before i unlocked my phone it got REALLY hot. kinda an ass move though saying that because you unlocked it immediately made your phone overheat and magicly cause damage.

Somebody should sue them for being misleading. The website should say " it will void your warranty" not this may or maynot crap.

i wish manufactures would let users modify the $670 device theyve purchased. i mean its like buying a laptop but being told you cannot use the backspace key or you void your warranty....
but yes i noticed that too. it says "may void your warranty" instead of "will void your warranty"

I agree an unlocked device is almost impossible to hard brick...with the RUU it's impossible. So yea so long as you don't s off..but flashing roms takes money out of the carriers pocket and they can't persuaid you to purchase a new device to get that fancy upgrade.

yup cant really do much about it i suppose. and well i know a few ways you could brick the One but youd have to be intentionally trying to do so.

call BS on this and get your phone back from HTC.
what you should have done was go to T-mobile first, they have a one year software warranty, regardless of what you do to your phone (or so i was told). if you haven't paid the fee already i would highly recommend doing this now.

bootloader relocked

Apparently at this time without the RUU for tmobile, if you unroot and relock, the bootloader will show relocked. If there is a way to not show relocked on the bootloader, maybe you someone can share the info.

Will this happen to me if I'm sending my phone to T-Mobile? I'm complaining for the camera issue.

There is an official RUU for T-Mobile, it also removed the ability to revone. Ry how have a fix for that by dropping back to the .8 RUU. You remove the relocked message by having s-off, then using revone commands to change unlocked to locked. This is in the revone posts

As soon as you unlock the bootloader to use REVONE you voided any warranty that isn't cosmetic damage to hardware pretty much, and you do say I understand this voids my warranty when getting that code to unlock through HTCDEV.... I'm confused as to your confusion OP.

[Q] Hide Unlock?

So, i have read that the only way that HTC or Verizon can tell that your phone was unlocked using HTC's unlocker was because when you relocked it, on the top of H-Boot it says relocked. I am wondering if anyone has found a way to hide this so you can send it back and have it appear as stock.
When you use the unlocker it also records your ESN so they have your phone on the no warranty list.

What if you have insurance? For example if I magically brick somehow after unlocking, will my insurance be voided or no?

I would think it depends if verizon has access to this list from htc. Anyone know if verizon can tell your warrenty status through HTC or if they just go by the date you purchased your phone.

Unlock bootloader, and perm root

Is there anyway to unlock the bootloader to gain perm root without htc dev and keeping warrenty?? If not should I return this phone and get one that can be? And if so, which phone would be best?

You're worrying over nothing. If the device is defective due to manufacterer defect, and breaks down becaue of said default. They will honor warranty/exchanges since they are the ones at fault. Now if you fragged your phone because of an oc, bad flash, wrong software, that's your own bad and you're on your own. Unless you have insurance and the phone met its untimely end under your vehicle.

Ok.. I have had 3 phones that I rooted and never had a problem. I just didn't want htc to tell Verizon that I did it and if something did happen that they wouldn't give me another.

if you want to unlock the bootloader and gain perm root
and still keep warrenty, then you should go with galaxy nexus.

Regarding rooting and warranty.

I jus bought a brand new mobilicity HTC amaze (299$) and so far its great. It came with a one year warranty and I am still thinking about whether or not I am going to root and flash a Rom. I know rooting it will void the warranty however, is there any way to cover up the fact that you rooted the phone so I could use the warranty if needed? Anyone else notice this has a 2 megapixel frontcamera? That's pretty sweet I don't know any other phone that has more than 1.3 megapixels. I have noticed some dust in it though, and I have read the related threads with no solutions available. Does anyone have a simple solution to this? I have covered the earpiece with a screen protector, maybe that will help.
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda app-developers app
You will ONLY void your warranty if they see that it's rooted, but because you have to unlock the bootloader to root all HTC phones, they will see that if you have to bring it in for repair. However, they don't really go into the bootloader of the phone. To be safe, if you need to take your phone in for repair or something, RUU the phone back to stock, and relock the bootloader
Okay, from what I understand, I can root my phone a thousand times and just relock it and they won't know the difference, correct? Thanks for your reply.

That is incorrect... If you relock the bootloader it will say "relocked" ... For it to say locked you have to be s-off before flashing the ruu
But as long as the problem you are sending it in for is a hardware problem and not a software problem, then it will most likely still be covered under warranty.
Hope that helps

Verizon contract

Just curious.... has anyone ever looked at the contract lately. I was looking to see where it said anything about rooting devices but no dice. Can someone clear that up maybe with a link? Thank you
I don't believe the contract says anything about it, but the warranty on the other hand is a different story.

I always wondered, if you told Verizon you are or were rooted, do they write it down? So even if you unroot they will know your warranty is void?

Well with the Rezound, you need to use an unlock key from HTC's site, so they know you rooted your phone..

I don't think they coordinate with vzw on that ... I would be very surprised I'd they did. But as for warranty... how would it void that?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
First of all, they probably won't check the bootloader to see if you've unlocked it. And if you really wanna be precautious, you can revert back to locked, although it is an extensive process
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Honestly i really understand why unlocking the bootloader voids your warranty since you cant really break your phone being S-ON, now if you were S-OFF that is a whole other story. And honestly someone who is unlocked and/or rooted is likely to have enough experience to be able to fix almost any software related issue(not always the case though). Being unlocked and/or rooted shouldnt hold you back from sending it in for warranty. Although i have heard some people say it goes through warranty just fine being rooted and unlocked.

I know what I can do... but it has nothing to do with my device ... I just am curious if vzw has anything legit in place against modifying software on the phones. I've seen where it says you can not modify the hardware but saw nothing of software

I don't know legally what they can do, but I've had a few conversations with the local reps in my area. They don't care if you phone is rooted as most of them have rooted phones. I was in with my dad the one day back when he was getting the Tbolt, and the rep noticed that my bolt was rooted. He said honestly, he would never recommend the bolt to someone who wasn't going to root it anyway. I've been told that they are a lot more lax about rooting now than they were in the past.
At the Verizon store near me, the only person that cares is the manager. The rest of the employees don't care
Sent from my Rezound using xda app-developers app
As far as I know Verizon doesn't care at all if you root, (I've unlocked the bootloader, relocked and sent in many Rezounds and they never cared) and HTC just tells you they have the right to not honor your warranty when you unlock your bootloader, at their discretion, but they almost always honor it.
Another thing, unless you have the extended warranty with Verizon (I think), your Rezound's warranty is handled by HTC, Verizon is just the middle man.
Legally Verizon can't do anything as it is legal for any consumer to root and do whatever the hell they want with the software on their phones, but they can choose not to honor your warranty if they feel your modifications are the reason the phone became faulty. So your safe, have fun rooting worry free !
Isn't there a way to trick your phone so that Verizon can't tell you did it?

I have already sent back 4 Rezounds this year under the warranty and as I made of fact I am now awaiting my 5th any day. Each one was unlocked and rooted. I re-flash the RUU before sending it back and have not had an issue yet.

have you sent them back for legit problems? and what were you problems? (even if you made them up )
I think the only risk you would have is if they somehow found out you were tethering. It does day in the Verizon contact that you can't tether without using (and paying for) their service.
But I've also heard from countless people that they would never know. Unless you returned a phone with the tether app and files still in there.

No...they can't do anything unless you were stock and they had an app or service running at all times to monitor it. Otherwise they would have no way to tell

Not 100% true. If you are doing a WiFi tether, where the device is acting as a hotspot they can tell because they can see more than one private IP being routed through your devices' public IP. This combined with the fact that you don't have hotspot on your account can be considered a breach of contract.

Returning phone with HTC Advantage Warranty

I have the new AT&T version of the m8. In less than a week, I cracked the screen and called in my HTC advantage warranty to replace the phone. I have unlocked it and am using the venom rom. Is there any way to get it back to factory settings before sending it off to them.
Any and all help is appreciated
There are quite a few threads on this. Try a search and I'm sure you will find something.... Even your exact circumstances with cracked screen.

See theWarranty policy of HTC.
We don't have any RUUs yet so you'll have to find a way to Reflash stock rom + recovery, S - on and relock the bootloader.
