Data recovery HELP - Bricked phone - AT&T LG Optimus G

Sorry for the duplicated post. I just noticed the other one i posted is in the wrong section and this is the one for the AT&T phones so here it is again.
Hi Guys. Today i rooted my phone for the first time (LG Optimus G e970)
Everything went well, then i uninstalled the bloatware from AT&T and a few of the google apps that i do not use like books or music, and on the next reboot i got my phone bricked with the LG loop and "Security Error" message.
I found some great info on these forums on getting the phone in working condition with the help of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2388440
However, before i go ahead and restore the phone's original firmware, i would like to know if there is anyway to recover some of the files. I have some important notes i wish to recover, everything else is on google and the external SD card so im not all lost.
I am able to put the phone in download mode by holding the up and down volume keys and then powering on the phone with the usb cable connected to the PC, but it is not showing as an external disk on the computer. I do have the LG drivers installed tho, the same ones i used to root the phone.
Any ideas?. thanks a lot.

What recovery do you have ? You may be able to mount internal and sd card in recovery and access them on your computer ?

Hi thank for the help.
I have no clue about what recovery i have. I never played with the phone before the rooting and removal of the apps, so i believe it should be the "stock" recovery if you wanna call it like that.

I don't know what guide you followed to get the root. If you followed this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2450258
You should have twrp. Stock recovery may not be able to mount storages for uses on PCs.
Also I haven't seen the post you included , maybe that's an older post. A lot of people use this to recover their "bricked" phones
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230994
I personally have followed this too.
As long as you have download mode you don't have to worry. However you need to read carefully before processing with teenybins because its something that can actually brick your phone if used wrong.

Ok so when i did the rooting i followed that same guide you linked to, but i only did it to the root part. Not the "UNLOCK BOOTLOADER AND INSTALL CUSTOM RECOVERY-"
I just wanted the permissions to remove the apps.
So now with the TeenyBin guide.... will that erase the current settings and information on the phone or is it just an attempt to fix the firmware loop?
will the process attempt to restore the google apps missing?

There are different kind of teenybins. They do different things, one giving you a working recovery and updating RPM/TZ, one restoring your phone to complete factory state. You will have to read it to know what I'm saying here. The one that give you twrp and update your partitions may let your data alone but you will most likely still have the existing bootloop. The gapps missing ? The ones you deleted ? If you use the bin that recovers phones to factory state then you will have all the stock apps again.

Quick update.
I was able to recover the phone and the data in it. :good:
I installed the new boot loader with the teenybin instructions and was able to backup the data partition to an SD card.
Anyway, after that i went for a recovery using the stock firmware and LGNPST and now i lost the boot loader with all the neat options, but got the phone working again, and to my surprise, everything was back there including data and applications,. i dont get it but oh well... im back alive.
Ill backup all the important stuff from now on, and then i will keep messing with the phone again LOL. i learned quite a few things today... ill read more from now on before doing more things.
Thanks for all the help.!!
Good nite

[Q] I just rooted my age i717 Samsung gnote

Ok. I have at&t Samsung galaxy note i717. Earlier today I manually updated the software to jelly bean 4.1 and also unlocked it by following a YouTube video. Now. I have downloaded a few things, such as SU, CWM, titanium backup, twrp, and I think that's it. I barely know what any of these things do. I have already deleted all bloatware from my phone. I went to TWRP and I backed up my current settings to my sd card. I guess that's out of the way.
I am asking if anyone can please explain in detail and retard terms, what precautions should I take before I figure out how to flash new roms and kernels, and if i backed up my phone correctly so if I screw up, I can restore my phone.
I need someone to explain to me what process I should take in order to keep my phone safe and secure, how to get a rom for saving battery... Do you need to connect to a computer to do this? Someone please explain to me how to use all of these apps and roms safely! Thank you

Check Development area for roms. Read about them and figure which is best for you, And as far as flashing Roms TWRP is the best way to go

My opinion. Dont mess with it. If its battery life you're looking for go to amazon and buy an extended battery.
Flashing roms and kernels without having some sort of idea what you're doing could completely brick(ruin) your phone.

Well, I already rooted my phone. It was pretty easy because I followed the steps correctly. And i don't want to buy a bulky battery, I also want to learn how to customize my phone.
I want to continue to research and learn about it so I don't hard brick my phone. I was hoping someone could at least explain the apps that I have downloaded. What each do. How to back up my phone settings to my sd card. Do I need each app that I downloaded, and when do I need to connect to a computer? When I go online and find a new rom and flash it over with Odin? I just want to know step by step process so I can learn this safely. Thanks
1 - Read the pinned threads at the top of the General section and the Q&A section.
2- Use Google.

SU is superuser. its for rooted andriods. basically when you try to go into an app that requires root superuser is what will grant that app permission to do what it wants to do.
a rooted android must have su or it wont have root access.
cwm, titanium backup, twrp- The only one of these i use is cwm. clockwork mod is simple. a stock phone has its own recovery. power on while holding up/down vol's and it boots into recovery. cwm is a modded recovery that allows you to do more. you open it the same way as the stock one but from there you can backup your entire phone, -roms and all. the way to put it on your phone is to download the appropraite one for your android version and also download odin. when odins open click pda, find the file, start phone in download mode (vol down and pwr) and click start. now there are a ton of tutorials but thats the gist of it. now after its back up you can try to flash roms, kernels, etc. most of them will be flashed via odin some you will drag onto your sd card and flash them via cwm(the install zip from sd card option).
When it comes to flashing stuff on your phone nothing is 100% safe and a backup isnt always going to fix a problem you may cause. dont flash anything you havent done research on. read the entire forum to see what problems people had and how they fixed them.
Most downloads youll find have step by step instructions, follow them.
Good luck

[SOLVED] [Q] Bricked LG L9 P769, locked BL, JB, Rooted, LG Bootloop

Hey all,
I have a CWM backup of my current rom and have backups of apps and data but am stuck at a bootloop.
As I have read countless articles, it seems my error is because I have a locked bootloader(not actually sure). Though, I only tried to flash
clockcycle's wiped v20d cwm backup file. It failed part way saying it couldn't write to /system.
Since then, I haven't been able to fully enter CWM. just see the red triangle with the droid guy on his back.
I have read Cmahendra's unbricking guide but it doesn't work as I have installed JB and even the tips to unplug, wait 10s and reopen the program to flash again it still won't work. Still stops at 15% saying error connecting to the phone.
There is a similar thread which had this exact problem which said to
use the online method to recover your phone since I had already installed JB. I edited the hosts file to remove the fake offline server and opened up the b2CAppsetup.exe, clicked on customer support,
entered my model LGP769BK and my S/N and it began to start the process and 'analyze' then crashed and said "updating is not possible any longer due to a fatal error while the LG mobile phone software Update"
I've tried to search this out myself and not waste any space but I'm at loss here. If anyone has any help, it would be much appreciated
as I don't have a phone while this is not working.
I've tried all the ways to to hard reset, master reset and still I get the droid guy on his back. I can get to S/w mode like all the other posts say to do but none of those fixes seem to work for me. Am I missing something?
Do I have any options here? I have kind of read that I should just unlock the bootloader but I don't think that applies in my case as I can't turn on my phone fully.
edit: for the online method(LG support tool), it basically cancels when it goes to the 'downloading' phase --> this is what I've seen as most of the answers but doesn't work
Upon further reading,
many seemed to need to replace their u-boot and x-loader
I did so and installed fastboot using Lelus' script here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41768774&postcount=1
I used option 6 which allowed me to flash the u-boot and x-loader from p760(works with my 769 and others as it says in the options) for JB
I'm not sure if I needed this as I don't have an unlocked bootloader.
I'm not sure of commands in fastboot but I ran
fastboot devices and it showed something
I also ran: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
and I put one of my cwm backups in the "yours" folder
After I activate fastboot, it brings me to the C:\fastboot\yours folder
I assume this is for me to put my intended files in but I'm unsure if I should use my cwm backup or something else?
After it flashed the recovery img, I sent a fastboot reboot command
but it still went back to the droid lying down with a red triangle.
As some of you may see, I'm not too great with this but I feel like I'm close. Does anybody have an idea of what I should be doing?
should I flash an update.zip?
I don't know many commands but hopefully this gets me going in the right direction.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
I guess your cmw restore formatted your system but couldnt load the new system
the recovery you run with a locked bootloader uses a technique called 2nd init which i think is somewhere stored in the system partition. so when the recovery formatted the system, it lost itself too.
I've had a similar problem. the way out would be booting into the SW upgrade mode--switch off the device, remove the battery, remove the usb cable. press the volume up button and connect the phone to the computer. wait for a couple of seconds and then insert the battery.
you should be in the SW upgrade mode
now use the B2C client. if it gives an option to upgrade, use that otherwise, go to the customer support menu and press recovery phone
I have already done earlier. It may have gotten lost in my frenzy of information. I have put the phone into software mode, as you said, and it won't work either; There's no option to click upgrade because it's JB(V20D) and when I click recovery phone and enter my imei, LG mobile support tool(B2capp.exe) analyzes and then has a 'fatal error'
Since I flashed the new u-boot and x-loader my screens are all backwards/mirrored. Maybe the tool flashed an unlocked u-boot and x-loader if that's possible.
Is a recovery possible by fastboot?
I have a clean and full copy of my cwm recovery as well as apps and data backed up, I just need to get this phone in working order

If you fastboot flash the u-boot and x-loader from p769(ICS) it should go thru with the offline flash detailed in cmahendras guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
Use the KDZ_FW_UPD.zip from this thread
Or try this
Remove all of the stuff you have downloaded for this. Download the original B2C client from LG's site and use that

I have the updated kdz fw upd .zip from the unbrick and root thread as well as downloaded a new, official B2C client but they all still hang at the download part during phone recovery.
Tablechair, that did the trick.
Is this because the tool we use to flash for the offline method doesn't recognize the x and u-boot loaderse of JB?
After I installed the ICS boot loaders, my software upgrade mode wasn't mirrored anymore.
I did as tablechair and flashed the V20D.
Does anyone understand why this problem happened in the firstplace? Maybe I didn't get a full copy of clockcycle's backup cwm
or should I have not flashed his recovery in the first place since I didn't have an unlocked bootloader?
Again thank you for all your help and if anyone can provide answers to my other supplemental questions, that'd be great.
Off to root and probably unlock bootloader to be sure.
edit: I can't find the thanks button. but thank you very much tablechair. much appreciated. Hope this can help someone else
p.s. also big thanks to those who made the fastboot program for p769(Artas182x and sguerrini97). really an invaluable tool as I now know.

Things don't always go according to plan, maybe his Clockworkmod backup was made from the touch version and he didn't have artas182x second init recovery installed. So when the cwm failed the first time, did you try to restore your cwm backup?

Not yet. having problems flashing a kdz again. I've tried the 2 different software modes, as well as setting emerg and diag but still getting stuck at 15% again.
Do i have to replace my uboot and xloader with the ICS ones every time I want to use the offline flash method?

I realized I misread your question. When I flashed before the incident, it failed to write to system and I didn't restore my other folder. I rebooted and it was all missed up. Anyway, now that I've got everything back and now with an unlocked bootloader, i was able to recover my old image. However, data isn't working so I have to find the radio to flash as I recall reading in other threads.
Can someone explain in laymen terms why this is? recap, i was on unlocked bl rooted jb and I flashed my old cwm backup when I was rooted but had a locked bl. My apps and messages were all there but the radio was different. I'd understand if I was going from ICS to JB but I was on JB both times. The only difference being a locked BL. It's got to be something about the Radio from p760 or V20B that didn't work on my earlier backup or something like that because the layout status bar is different with a "data" button and showing H instead of 4g(which are the same afaik).
Since, I restored to my backup from after my bootloader unlock and root so data is working showing 'H' with the different layout
Also, I had problems backing up and restoring until I noticed that it works better when I power off the phone and do the manual commands to enter recovery as opposed to using the app to send me to recovery(where I incurred /system backup errors).
My last question is which cwm recovery should I use? I currently have the one for a locked bootloader installed as per Artas182x's website. On that post he has a link for an unlocked bootloader recovery on the xda forums but that thread was updated to not working. Are there any disadvantages to me using a locked bootloader cwm recovery?
I don't think I have any option but to try it as I want to flash CM10.1 for p769. I also read that if your bootloader is unlocked, you can download the cwm from the googleplay. If this is true, can I just install over or should I uninstall the Artas182x locked bootloader one????
update: have to remove l9 recovery by deleting the appropriate system folders and then flash the appropriate .img through adb commands
Help.

Although I might be late, I have the same problem and the same phone and I really need help. I have a soft bricked phone lg optimus l9 and I had the same problems that you had exactly... Which is weird exept I don't have Clock Work Mod or anything ... If you get this I would really appreciate some help. Thanks
yup me too
I finally got software upgrade to work with my lg p769 that was security error cuz i still haven't unlocked the bootloader, if i knew what a good job lg and T-Mobile did in locking it i would have waited and got a g3 that my buddy rooted in like 5 min and unlocked the boot....
What worked for me is this LG FLASH TOOL 2014 THREAD ON XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2797190
flashed both the 20H and 20D successfully i uninstalled everything lg in the control panel first though.
Hope this works for you cuz i was struggling on and off for a month to get this far lol
the 2014 tool ultimately worked for me too, once I fixed a couple things. I had rooted and forgotten to unlock, so it was at Security Error, and it would also disconnect at 15% .. in the 2014 tool, I had to install all the updates even though I'm in windows 7 or it would keep doing it. All good now.

Hey, it's been ages since I have done any of this but IIRC, if you can get into fastbood mode u can still get into software mode,
- turn phone into fastboot mode
- open the software upgrader thing as you normally do
- maybe switch emerg to diag or something like that
- this part is where it's slightly different than the normal way(same program but u select a different option than the default 1st option on
I think if yoiu look through the tutorials it does mention an alternative method for getting into software mode
in one instance in my past, i had to reflash the ICS boot drivers so the software installer would recognize that
the flashing of the ICS boot drivers is done through fastboot. Should be a post in my history where I asked a question regarding this.
Sorry for the chaos but maybe this will help you get in the right direction since I don't know any of your phone history and what you've done etc
best of luck mate

Hey, I have been trying it with the fastboot but it keeps timing out and not allowing me to finish. One thing I should let you know is that, ever since I had put the device in fastboot, I am not able to get back the S/W upgrade mode. Dont know if that will help in seeing what my problem is or if you want me to explain everything from the beginning again, I am more than happy to.
Have you followed the steps that I linked to in the first 3 posts of this thread?
Follow the steps to flash the ICS bootloaders in fastboot and then you can do the fastboot trick for getting the software to recognize your device.
Right now your phone has the JB boot loader on it and is thus not recognized by the software.
recap:
step 1: flash the ICS bootloaders in fastboot (look at the linked thread in post 2)
step 2: use the software in emerg or diag mode but sitll follow the same steps as the tutorial. I think my earlier posts should explain precisely.
if you dont flash the ICS bootloaders, it won't be recognized by the KDZ installer

Stock Recovery Needed For ZTE Avail 2 (Z992 - AT&T)

I have a ZTE Avail 2 which I recently managed to root with Cydia Impactor. Afterwards I managed to screw it up by removing too many stock apps with Titanium. I did it carefully, one by one, and for a few days everything seemed to work fine. But then apps started force-closing, '<name of app here> has stopped working', etc. Factory reset doesnt help, it just restores me to the same screwed up state I'm in now. I already know why, it's because I removed some of the stock apps, which I now realize it needs. I'm currently stuck on the AT&T logo when powering on, it never gets any further. But even while it was messed up it was still halfway-operable, and now this. This device's subforum on Android Forums is all but non-existent, and XDA doesnt seem to have anything for it.
What I need is a 100% stock ROM (pre-rooted if possible) that I can flash, along with instructions on how to flash it. I have some experience flashing ASUS devices and Samsung devices, mainly the Transformer pad, and the Note 2, but have also rooted miscellaneous other devices in the past without alot of issues. But I have no experience with ZTE. I've already checked the manaufacturer's website for some kind of recovery software I can use to restore it, there doesnt seem to be anything.
Thanks for any help!

did you ever get around to doing this? there is supposedly a stock image on androidforums but when I opened the Zip, all it had was the stock apps, no build.prop, which I think I blew away with xblast (xposed plugin). now I hang on the boot screen image. there is a stock Rom for the z993 our there, which I suppose I could use, because they are supposed to be the same phone, just different carriers... but then I need to get the at&t apn's and it is just a PITA. so if you could post /system backup or just a stock build.prop, that would be great!
(I'd post links to these rooms but I guess I'm too new of a member... I can provide them if needed.)
I'm way late on this, but just thought I'd post to say that I no longer have the device, and I was never able to fix it.In any case, I hope the rest of you guys get it fixed. It seemed to be a halfway decent phone, although a bit sluggish at times. But beyond that, with all the bloat removed, I'd say it ran pretty well for the duration of time that I had it (less than a month). I currently have a GNote 3 (T-Mobile) and a GNote Pro 12.2" now and it's just awesome, I'm really loving them.
Sorry, accidental double-post (can't figure out how to delete this post, the "Edit/Delete" button doesnt appear to have any option to entirely delete a post).
Just like "AnonVendetta83" messed up using Titanium.
Now desperately looking for Stock ROM or any working custom ROM to bring phone back to life.:crying:

There is a working custom Rom for the z993 (identical hardware, different customized software for AIO, another cell provider). All you will need to do is change/update the data provider stuff so you can still use 3g and mms's. Plenty of info on this online on what needs to be changed.
You can get this Rom over at androidforums.com
http://androidforums.com/prelude-all-things-root/792279-zte-prelude-z993-stock-unrooted-rom-aio.html
There is also a cwm recovery there that works on this phone, and a partial /system backup by someone else for the z992... it is just apps and what not.
If they aren't available anymore, let me know and ill see if I still have them saved somewhere for you.

Thank you so very much Alex
I was wondering if I can just simply place the rom zip on the root of your sdcard and continue without doing "Install CWM - ZTE Prelude (Z993) Root&Recovery" step???
Honestly I have absolutely no idea how to do CWM steps as they come so complicated to me.

You need to install the custom recovery... It is the only way to install the zip file. If you just have the zip and go into the stock recovery I don't think you can select which zip to install

Thnx Alex
I would highly appreciate if anyone tell me what ADB Driver I should use for ZTE Z992. I almost understood all the procedure in the links but now the problem is despite I tried different ADB Drivers, but still ADB reboot-bootloader boots phone again in Normal bootloader.
Also Fastboot devices command does not see the phone, while ADB Devices command see it.
Seems bootloader is locked. Right? What should I do?
This is the method I used when I rooted my avail2 :
http://androidforums.com/zte-avail-2-zte-prelude/821217-how-root-zte-avail-2-z992-guide.html
The author (and I) just used the included drivers from zte that come with the phone. From what I remember, fastboot worked fine. Just hold the volume down button then turn the phone on. It will seem to lock on the start screen, but this is the bootloader. Then connect your cable and try your fastboot commands.
If you are already rooted, you can just download the package here
http://androidforums.com/prelude-all-things-root/797487-cwm-recovery-installer-zte-prelude.html
And skip the middle section, using the impactor to root (13 and 14).
Depending on what's wrong with your phone, you could also try just using the stock recovery and doing a system reset there. It will wipe any bad custom settings, but if the rom is still viable it might get you up and running again. It got me out of a bootloop without re-romming the whole thing. And with titanium backup or system app mover you can reinstall anything you need in the system partition.
*edit - Damn kindle auto correct

A bit to much fiddling resulted in disaster
Hello XDA forum users,
I'm about ready to toss this phone in the trash. I have an AT&T Avail 2 with model number z992, which is apparently manufactured by a company called ZTE. First I think it would be helpful to explain what I've done to the phone and perhaps others out there can tell me if I've destroyed the phone or if it can be fixed.
A friend of mine sold me the phone for 10 bucks, its in great condition which is why its such a shame that it seems perma-bricked. I have no need for the phone aspect of the device, I simply wanted to "convert" it to a handheld media/application player, like an ipod or tablet for example. The phone comes with several bundled software applications that I find completely useless and wanted them removed, EX. AT&T Navigator and other AT&T software, plus a bunch of google applications.
The first thing I did when I decided to try and customize it was to use Kango's root tool which worked and rooted the phone. I was all excited that it worked and continued by installing the Super User application which allowed me to gain full control over the device. (I should have stopped there.) After the successful phone root I then installed a 3rd party app called NoBloat and used its uninstall options to remove a lot of stuff. I couldn't tell you exactly what all was removed but looking back, it must have been more important than I realized at the time. I know I took out all the AT&T software, then all the Google stuff to, which destroyed the play store. I didn't take out anything that seemed like a system file but apparently the Google stuff is the system files. The phone still worked in this state but it was erratic and things like Contacts would crash even if it was not running. So I considered that a failed attempt and commenced to do a factory reset using the recovery menu (Vol Up + Menu Key + Power button) but the factory reset didn't work, well not like it was supposed to. I had used the restore option before and it made the phone work like it was brand new. Now when the phone is powered on it will boot to the initial setup and ask me to choose a language, then it will get as far as the wireless connection screen (sometime not even that far) and the phone reports that "Unfortunately, Setup Wizard has stopped." and then I tap OK and the setup wizard restarts at the language screen. This is the state it is in now and I do not know how to fix it, I'm beginning to think there currently is no method to fix this.
Things I've tried so far include installing minimal ADB-Fastboot to try and sideload various ROM images, the ones I found here and other places. The phone is not recognized by Windows 7 though and the ADB does not work like it did on a motorola phone I did this to before. I've also purchased an inexpensive 8GB microSD chip with an adapter so I could put the ROM info on that and tried the "Update from external storage option" and that seems like it would work but none of the ROM's I've used will install. I guess because there is some kind of security feature built into the phones hardware which checks the data files for specific tags/sizes and therefore won't accept any of the ROMS I've tried.
There is no means to access the old file system anymore like most guides show, I do not have any CWM's installed nor any backup data whatsoever. It's been reset and now it seems the data it used to restore itself is, while not completely missing, damaged and will not reload anymore. All the guides I've read or watched usually show the user in the operating system or using software on a PC to type out commands. None of that works on this phone though, the phone as I just described it is basically bricked. Is there anything that can fix this, or is the phone a paper weight now? A functional ROM image from AT&T seems unlikely as they have absolutely no relevant information about this on the commercial website and the help and support seems like it's setup for old people who don't understand technology at all. If anyone out there has experience with issues like this then by all means let me know. If more information is necessary then I will be glad to provide it if available.
Alright I did manage to figure out how to make the computer see the phone as an ADB device and the minimal ADB interface shows the device now when I type ADB devices at the command prompt. Though this ADB thing seems irrelevant considering I can do the same thing by using the SD card adapter. So I don't know if this was useful or not. The ADB prompt shows a device number of P752A15.
Before I was unable to make the device show up at all in the ADB list. The problem now is how to make the phone accept a ROM, at this point I don't even care if the ROM is the default factory ROM or some random ROM made by a devoted user. The issue I encounter each time is that the built in recovery option to restore from an SD card will not accept the ROM's I've tried so far, and my research on this seems to indicate that I need a custom recovery option. This is apparently called the ClockWorkMod but as to how I install that without a functional operating system on the device is a mystery still. I've tried using a file called recovery.zip and but it does not show up when I view the contents of the SD card when the card is in the phone.
I feel like an idiot because I've done this to other phones for my family and friends, you know jailbreaking an iPhone, and rooted a Galaxy S3 once but this phone seems like its not going to be as easy as those others. I guess AT&T made sure that if you alter it, it breaks the phone. I'll check back later and see if anyone has dropped a line or two here in response to my inquiry.
Thank you and have good day.

Ok, been a while since I've used this phone, but hopefully this will help. I assume you have the kaw202_recoveryflasher.zip file. Once you extract it, look for the .img file. Try running these adb commands
adb.exe push cwm-z993.img /cache
adb.exe shell "su -c 'dd if=/cache/cwm-z993.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17'
This should flash cwm if your phone is rooted and adb shell is working.

I have not come across that particular file yet, I did try to google it and the only results it had were two and one of those was this post. Would you mind telling me where I might find a copy of the kaw202_recoverflasher.zip?
I managed to find the zip you were talking about and have downloaded it, for anyone else looking for it. I am unable to post links but I would have linked to the files you mentioned. For others looking for the same zip file search for "CWM Recovery Installer ZTE PRELUDE". That's the title of the thread I found the file on that Alex mentioned above. The instructions on the page don't seem like they apply to the situation I'm stuck in but I'll give it a whirl anyway and see if the files work.
If this forum is like the others I've read through so far then there is no real answer to the issue. The phone seems kind of new and not many of the power users on these forums use rinky dink phones like this one. You guys all have the 600 dollar models I guess. What bugs me about this this phone and the state I managed to put it in, is that the damn thing was programmed the first time when it was made. So it seems to me like there should be a way to reprogram the phone the same way the factory did it. Think about it, when they make the phones they don't have any information on the phone at all. It's completely empty, so there must be a way to load the software for the phone even if the phone has no data at all in the main storage. If the files in the recovery flasher.zip file work then I'll post back the results but if it's like the other files I've messed around with (which didn't do anything) then I'm throwing it in the trash can.
Anyway thanks for your response and for pointing me in a different direction Alex

HELL YEAH!!! It worked thank you Alex,
I would have never figured this out without your help! The phone now has a version of CWM on it and the recovery menu is different. I just tried to install a ROM and it said successful. After the phone rebooted went back to the setup screen from ZTE but it still did the same thing. However this is progress and I should be able to "wander in the dark" and figure out a way to use the CWM to install a completely new rom. Any recommendations on a ROM to use for the z992?
Good news, I was able to fix it using the information Alex guided me to find. Since there doesn't appear to be a stock AT&T version of the ROM I ended up using the Azazel ROM. Which at first failed even though it was installed, this I determined was due to the old ROM image still being partially active on the system partition. So I formatted the system partition to and tried again. This time it worked and the phone seems fully functional again, and best of all the annoying bloatware is not present and the apps are not crashing. I consider this issue resolved. Thank you again Alex I will be sure to leave a thanks on your post.

Glad I could help, but none of the work was done by me, the guys over at android central did all the heavy lifting, I just pointed you in the right direction. I have a stock system e m image around here somewhere if you need it, tho installation will be a bit more complicated. If azazels rom ever gives you issues, ill dig it up and try and help you install it.

Hard brick of death

so ive rooted and flashed twrp on here, and everything was good, so i go to install jasmine ROM, and it tells me to erase everything, which i did and i made sure not to check sd_ext or internal storage, and afterwards it erased litterally everything. all my files, so the rom was gone, and i went to recover my back up but that was gone too! now it sits at the lg screen with the light flashing. i can get into system recovery but nothing else. so i cant do the lgflash thing so thats off the table. no download mode or bootloader either. its practically a paperweight but i want to know if any of you guys would know if i can fix this or just send it in.

you could try putting the sd in your pc to put the rom back on it, then back and try flashing. if that fails, sounds like its toast.
i dont have one to begin with, but do you think if i used a mates phone with an sd card, and just download the rom i was gunna use, then put it in my phone, if that would work? seems like it in theory.

thank you so much for the help (; ill let you know if i succeed
I think you will be okay, maybe try LG Flashtool and usb flash back to stock if those don't work.
I got it. Put the Rom in sd and it worked perfect. Whooo
Whew!..congrats.:good:
For some reason I can't flash from recovery menu..failed to mount sd/card, unknown error 150...
Maybe your SD is formatted in a file system twrp doesn't recognize? I had to reformat my 64gb to fat. I used twrp's built-in advanced wipe function to change external SD file system to fat, others have used a pc-based tool from ridgecomp.
You end up with the couple GB maximum individual file size limit, but I just copied my 11c 2.8gb system.img onto it without any trouble.
Augh.. now I can't even root. I rooted via ioroot, then wanted to unroot so I could do the 11C OTA, but could not unroot via the way I practiced using LG flashtool using port 41. For some reason it would just stay at 0%(worked fine before) so I used Simply Unroot..SU said unrooted but I did not look at software status which now reads "modified".
Now I can't adb despite reinstalling lg drivers
I tried these 5 root methods
for Verizon VS985-11C
IOROOT= Phone reboots to a blank screen, pc says "no adb device found and phone does not show any recovery menu, just the android robot on his back with a red triangle.
STUMP= Phone says cant because of a patch?
TOWELROOT="Device not support"
PURPLEDRAKE=Same, no recovery menu despite hard button recovery(I wiped cache and did a factory reset via power button/vol down) That's the ONLY recovery menu I see. It is a different looking menu all white w/ grey boxes. It does not look like a normal recovery menu. So the 11C update must have changed that??
Where or where is my blue and red recovery menu?
ROOTTOOL= Same thing with the adb.
These root attempts are rebooting the phone into recovery when usb attached but then it just shows the robot, and pc then says "no adb device found" So I can't even side load it with command prompt.
Maybe after all this root is resolved, I will work on the sd card..lol..
I can't believe I can't even root and I am flagged as rooted!
Thanks for any help,

You might be on the 11C update. Try downgrading (there's a thread in here somewhere) to 10b and you should be solid. I don't know if those numbers are correct, but check your build number.
I'm having a similar issue. I was rooted and had TWRP installed. Verizon kept prompting to update and I accidentally hit update now. So my guess it's trying to get to the stock recovery and update; however TWRP is installed. How can I flash stock recovery via TWRP? I can't do anything and no matter if I reboot to system it's still redirecting to recovery to update I assume...HELP!!! I can't mount anything either!!!

Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/fix-stuck-custom-recovery-trying-ota-t2907508
And this check this for blocking an OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/psa-stop-taking-ota-updates-update-t2909412
I'm sorry, I did forget to say that the OTA from 10B to 11C was done because I thought I could just re-root
One odd thing. I am now not rooted, but "modified", so is that why I am able to still edit files on my sd-card. Kit-Kat blocked editing of files. At least I can edit. Bit if I format the card will it affect the edit thing?
Thank you

Never ever take an OTA if you're rooted. In the future, just get rid of the notification, and then come here. Better yet - after you root, disable updates entirely.
Also, another reason to not take an OTA is because often times there are anti-rollback code in them, just like there is almost always a root patch. The regular "usb back to stock" and all the current root methods don't work on 11C for that very reason, and you have to use the KDZ method instead. If you jump on an OTA too early and find out there isn't a way to get back to the previous version... you're stuck. That happened to tons of people on one of the Galaxys I heard, and it so happened that the patch was a very good one. I've heard that the people who took that OTA are still stuck with it.
For 11C, there were early reports of those that rooted, but did not Bump or edit the system, got lucky and sometimes kept root after the OTA. Have you used a root checker to confirm you don't have root? None of the root methods are going to work on 11C, but you might still have it. If you don't, or something else is messed up, you'll need to get back to 10B to fix it.
Edit: Also, you're going to want THIS thread, not the other two I posted!
I did unroot before ota.. the only way I could at that time, via simple root. I just wanted to get the OTA out of the way(dont know why)
I used root checker, says no root.. If I go back to 10B I will try KDZ; or can I use the LG flashtool and try again with that using port 41, the 10B .dll, and 10B TOT?
For now I will follow your link and do as instructed..
Thank you laura

Did you do anything else when you had root? Change anything in the system at all?
Thank you soo much! It worked. 10B "Official"..
Then ioroot perfect..
Where is the "Thank you" button I read people saying to push??
I do have couple questions. Should I format the sdcard? Its 64gigs(reading 58gigs), new and reads/writes well; But I am back to my original prob. I installed TWRP and it found my deodexed stock10b.zip but in recovery menu it's back to not seeing any zips at all. I don't think that formatting will help that but I can try if you think that might be it.
thank u again

I forgot to actually answer your question.
No I was very careful to not change any system files. Its beyond my scope, as you can see..
This is such a cool phone. I had a droid 4 for two years and did not root..yah 2 years..because of the Que 0/0 root counter. But with this phone, there's no way I'm not rooting and just would like deodexed because I am under the impression the theming is easier / more flexible. Something about the file system structure being more compressed?

Awesome! And yes, the sd card needs to be reformatted as fat32 for TWRP to see it.
Now that you're back on 10B, you can get the 11C update again if you want using this. The 11C OTA already has a rooted, deodexed flashable zip.
I do have that exact Rom/zip on both internal and ext card. Is there a program in particular to format, or just any, and should I format via pc(hook up usb with Windows 7), or is there a good .apk app.
Also, is 64gigs in any way too much.
Could I go up to 128gigs provided I use fat32.
Should the allocation just stay default? It looks like I can go up to around 4 mbs. Is that a cache type thing.
Sorry I am bombarding all these questions. I love learning this stuff. Need a break from studying for comptia 801/802.
Last, where is the thank u button?

Did I brick my phone? Help

I am kind of new to this and followed some guides to get TWRP on the phone so I could do a nandroid backup.
So I unloxked the bootloader, no problems there. Then I flashed twrp thorugh adb still no problem. Booted back into the stock os just to make sure everything worked which it did. So I booted back into TWRP and started the backup. When it finished I pressed the reboot system on the same screen and here is where my problems begin. It took ages to get to the lock screen and then I had problems even getting into the phone. It freezed and rebooted (again taking ages). I now managed to get into the phone but when I try to open an app it freezes and reboots.
I don't know what went wrong and dont know what to do, please help.

I don't know what "guides" you followed but sounds like you didn't follow the correct guide. The only one you should be following is here, in the WTF INSTRUCTIONS.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76584629&postcount=193
Section 6 specifically is installing TWRP and root.
After installing TWRP, you need to boot straight to TWRP (NOT to OS!) and complete a whole checklist of stuff -- installing two more files, reformatting internal memory, flashing Magisk... AND all that in a specific order.
ONLY after all that do you then boot to OS.
Go to Section 6 of the WTF INSTRUCTIONS and cookie follow it. Use THOSE files. Read in a web browser not an app. Apps truncate entire sections.

Thank you, one more question, can flash those files from my computer to the phone? Or how could I get the files to my phone so I can flash them.

In the Prep section you transfer all those files from computer to microSD card. microSD card won't be reformatted when you reformat internal memory.
Or if you don't have microSD card, you can connect phone to PC while in TWRP, and it acts like a flash drive. You can drag the files from PC to phone. Using the TWRP file browser you would navigate to where you copied them.

Got it, thanks again. I've looked through the guide you psted and found that I didn't go back to early oreo, I am on pie. Could that be the issue? And if so should I try to find a stock recovery and flash it or should I try to get the phone to early oreo first?

If you unlocked your Bootloader without being on early Oreo, then you must have one of the 3 eligible variants (out of two or three dozen) which can request and use the LG official bootloader unlock code.
In thatcase, just start with Section 6. Your Bootloader is already unlocked.
