Unable to set the default dialer - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, about three weeks I have a problem that I can not set a default dialer.
I tried different rom including stock. I have a nexus fourth
And everywhere, always when I click on the notification of a missed call or sms the number should be. So I get the window at you select the application you want to run. I'll give that a Exdialer and always the same with me when the next event will again offer either select an application in which I want to go. Other app are set as default fine. Problem is only the dialer.
Please you do not know what could be the problem?

you could try

[Q] change default phone app

How do I change the default phone app to dialerPro ? When I click on a missed call icon in notification bar, it opens up in the default phone app. When I first clicked it it ask me which app to open - I chose dialerOne and checked "always use this", but it opened in the phone app instead.
I tried to clear defaults in application settings, but it says "no defaults are set"
So any ideas ?
Anyone tried to remove the default phone app ?
So I have to try it on my own, then ? Oh, man...

I've read somewhere that it was impossible on froyo to replace the default phone app, might have been on the DialerOne's description
So anyone can tell me how to make dialerOne the default dialer ?
When I force-close it, I can't make calls, and there are no defaults set for it.

Spot on mate. But somebody in Azure thread made DialerOne using the method used by grandioso and it works. I tried it myself but was unsuccessful.

Dialling From Contacts Too Slow

Hi
I find that dialling from s2 lacks following
1. In keypad, it sorts either first name or last name, not both. Very disappointing.
2. When we click contacts from home menu, it does not give option of default num key pad. Only default key board comes when we hit search bar.
Any option, suggestion on this. I find dialling too slow.

Well thats the way it works. Do you know one thing, say you have to call John, you just have to dial 5646. I like this feature so much.
Regards.

If you want to dial someone, open the dialer, not the contacts.
Sort by both names?? Do tell..
Why do you need the numberpad to open from contacts??
Open contacts, swipe contact, you're calling. What's "too slow" about that?
When we open dialer, and say I search a person with last name, his or her name will not pop.
When in contact, for searching, we need to pop up the keyboard. A dialer pad auto pop would have made it fast.
I know it cannot work like qwerty, but in my earlier dial pad of htc, sorting of both names was there.
My earlier e72 too lacked this, but, in a firmware update it was fixed.
Else I have to remember and change many first name.
My query make sence. When we dial, it should be quick to reach to no.

So you want to be able to search both names, not sort them.
It doesn't do containing text searches - it only searches for names that begin with what you type. Just bare that in mind and you can't go wrong. It is fast and easy - it's just different from what you've used before so you have to learn how to use it correctly.
I'm gonna borrow this thread a bit actually. I'm using dialer one since it has all the options I need, but right now I need to get a hold of the stock dialer for entering a USSD code (for disabling fast dormancy).
I've tried entering it in dialer one, but it just said "connection error or invalid MMI-code". I reckon this is since I'm trying to enter it from a third party app. So, trying to find the stock samsung dialer I go. I've checked both phone app and contacts app but cannot for the poop in me find the dialer pad. (You know the 0-9 + * and # keyboard). All I find are call logs, contacts and groups. But nothing about a dialer. I know I saw it somewhere when I first got this phone, but now I can't find it.
Any help?

Have you tried scrolling the tabs at the top of the screen? The dialer is on the far left.
Haha, thank you. I knew I'd seen it somewhere before. And of course it now worked like a charm. Have a good one.

[Q] Clear Defaults: not available

Hello. I have a brand new GS2, updated to the last kernel version. I just noticed that the Clear Defaults option in the app menu is all grey, so I can't for example change the default sms app. Is this normal in the Samsung phones? Does rooting fix this issue? Forgive me for the dumb question, but this in my third android (first Samsung) and I have never noticed such a thing.
Clear defaults is always greyed out for messaging. I use Handcent SMS and it's greyed out for the stock messaging app.
Thank you. Anyway, problem is, that I have this option greyed out for everything. What about rooting? Does it help?

It is greyed out by default unless an app takes over. The only time i've ever used it is for switching between Touchwiz and ADW. Try installing a different launcher and setting it as default to see if it's selectable.
As for rooting. It won't help. It doesn't change any options. It just gives you read/write access to the system/data partitions on the phone which are locked down in read-only by default.
Exactly, first install an app that replaces an other app, then you'll be able to Clear Defaults. (should be, at least)

change default dialer?

I know this shouldnt be hard, but I have been unable to find the setting or any other posts that mention how to change the default dialer. I have installed Dialer one (I hate the stock S3 dialer). I can use Dialer one to make phone calls, but all incoming calls are answered by the default dialer.
Please let me know how i can change this so only dialer one is used.
Thanks!
(I have not rooted my phone yet. waiting to make sure i want to keep this phone before going that far).

I find that rather odd... Have you tried going into Settings > Application Manager > All and selecting the default dialer and clearing defaults? Though I would think that if it is using it for outgoing calls as default that it would for incoming as well. Have you tried any other dialers to see if it was just that application?
I don't think its possible...

The clear defaults button is greyed out and cannot be pressed. So to be able to fully move to a different dialer does it require being rooted? custom rom? Im not opposed to either, but i just need to know because i cant handle this dialer. I am used to HTC and their dialer requires half the button presses or less to make calls, and makes far better use of the screen space etc... the stock dialer has been by far my biggest disappointment with this phone. other than that I like it a lot.

I've found the dialer tolerable, probably because I don't make that many calls. I'm not that familiar with touchwiz coming from an HTC device myself. Tried any other ROMs yet?

Replacing stock messaging app?

Hello all!
Since I have a Samsung (Galaxy Core Prime G360V to be specific), I have to suffer from Samsung's crappy stock messaging app, ugly yellow/orange color and all. My desperation to replace this app led me to this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-cm-app-installer-t2959922 and the CM App Installer. After playing with the CM messaging app on my sister's phone I have fallen in love with its level of customization and UI in general.
However, it has not been easy to install. For one, the APK wants to install as an update to the stock messenger. Obviously this "update" does not work and I am forced to find another way to use this texting app.
So my question is: How do I install a different messaging app and replace my stock one? Or maybe: How do I install an update APK as a different app entirely?
Thanks for reading, and I would appreciate any input from noobs and the experienced alike

You should be able to to use the Cyanogenmod App Installer to install the messaging app you want selecting the non-root install option. Then you can go into into settings, then find your old messaging app and select clear defaults then when you run the CM messaging app it should ask you if you want to set that as default so select the CM messaging app and always. If the CM messaging app doesn't work I would recommend taking a look at this article here that feature some great messaging apps. If you need any more help just let me know happy to help .

Sounds like a logical solution, but the thing is I can't install the app because it is the same package as the one I currently use (com.android.mms). If I knew how to change the app package name then maybe your suggestions would work. Maybe com.cyanogen.mms?

Sorry for the delayed reply, I would recommend just installing a different messaging app that way it doesn't have the same package name. A lot of newer messaging apps will have very similar features to what you are looking for. Then once it's installed go into settings find old messaging app, clear defaults, start the new messaging app and it should prompt you to always use that as default.

Yes, I am now using Google Messenger. The only problem I really have is that I have to toggle my mobile data to send/receive MMS. The stock messenger never had that problem. I'm going to stick with Google for a while and if the MMS thing becomes a bigger problem I will probably switch back to stock for consistency. I'm getting the Moto G5 Plus soon so it won't matter in a few months anyway
