BLN on SGS2 with Gustavo_s' kernel - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I recently changed my i9100 SGS2 from stock firmware to CM11m7. I have to say, I am really impressed with the increase in speed and the new options it gives me. One of those options that I just found out about is BLN. Since the SGS2 has no notification led, and NoLED draws quite some battery, this seems like a nice feature.
Of course I figured out that BLN is not supported by the CM11 kernel. So I upgraded to the kernel from Gustavo_s (the newest build from 06/21). As of yet, I am not really sure though which software or settings I need to get BLN running! What I've done so far is that I installed STweaks. This recognizes that my kernel supports BLN. When I switch to the BLN tab in STweaks, I am able to configure BLN to my liking, and also the test works fine (Click on Test BLN, switch off screen with power button, touchkeys get illuminated).
However, I have not understood yet how I can make my applications put a notification to be shown by those leds. WhatsApp for example has a setting to show notifications with the led. But it doesn't show anything. Then, most of the stock apps seem to just have no such option, since notification led is no feature of SGS2 (but I thought that the BLN mod inside Gustavo_s' kernel would take care at least for the apps that have such setting).
So I thought that maybe the much used app BLN control might do the trick. Upon starting, this gives me the message that my current liblights does not support BLN. No idea what to do with this. If I can upgrade, if I need another kernel. Simply no idea. And the app's homepage doesn't give me any hint. Another thing I tried was Light Flow. Here I have two extra options in the LED setting, one being sec_touchkey and the other being touchkey panel. Activated both. Also activated root mode. No chance. Even the notification test in Light Flow doesn't light any of the two touchkey leds.
Has anyone any idea, what I need to do? Can I upgrade liblights? Is it a thing of the kernel? Any suggestions maybe for another kernel to use (Dorimanx maybe?).
Any help is much appreciated!

The post of Gustavo_s clearly say:
KNOWN PROBLEMS
- Stweaks is not working at the moment, and i can't work to fix it because of reasons above.
Still, however, there is a workaround
Install Gustavo_s Kernel's from 21/4 (search for it) + STweaks
Really, its my config.
Cheers
Im speak spanish, sorry.

Or use Gustavo_s Kernel's with synapse.

[Q] Hi,is it possibile to control the light of touch button

Hello, everyone, is it possibile to control the light of the four touch button on vibrant? It's greate if we can control the on and off of the lights.
I saw tat leds hack app works on many android phones, but it does not work on vibrat. After take a look, I found "leds hack" modify the settings of leds/lcds to control the lights of touch button. But for vibrant, I don't know how to deal with.
The second question is that
Which branch of android is the one samsung using in their open sourced vibrant 2.2 rom? there is so many release of android 2.2 from google, and in the source code, ansung gave no information about their android branch.
is it just android 2.2 release1?
You need BLN. Some kernals support BLN (backlight notification) and they are the newest ones in the developement section.
And for the second question. 2.2 is froyo.

Thanks. I know froyo is 2.2, but in order to compile the samsung's sources, you must download other parts of code from android. For 2.2,froyo, there sare several releases, such as 2.2r1,2.2r1.2 and so on,these are 2.2,but different release, so I don't know which release they are extractly using.
BTW:now, which kernel support BLN? so I can flash room and write an apk to try to control the backlight of touch button(this means the button on the bottom of vibrant, not screen)
krylon360 is probably the one you want to ask that. He is the main Samsung leak specialist. Although there are a few others, I just think he was the original man to see. Maybe send him a pm.
There is an app already called BLN control in the market.
These support BLN and are probably the best. Just visit these threads and they tell you all about them.

BLN is not working, after take a look at his code, I found that bln only supports "turn lights on", no any supports about "turn lights off"
Depending on what you want the LEDs to do, BLN might not help you as it simply uses the LED touch keys to notify you of calls/messages and such. What exactly do you want to change?

I want to turn the leds off at night(it's too dazzling at night)
download noLED from market and disable soft buttons . noLED is a cool app that dispalys tinny red or green or yellow box depending what u r reciving ect calls .mms .email , once u put your phone to sleep istead of soft buttons lighting up u will have a tiny easy to spot box on your screen bouncing arrround letting you know u got something going on .
as for shuting soft light at all i have no idea and would love to know my self.
im 90% sure soft light are controlled by kernel maybe talk to one of the devs to cook a kernel that shuts off back light on soft keys
Yes, after take a look at the code, I found this need to modify the kernel. So the best way is some kernel developers do this as their kernels have lots of new features. If we modified the kernel source from sansung and build it ourselves, we will lose these features.

[Q]How to make LED blink on GB?

I tried all three kernels currently available for GB, none of them supports blinking LED. Then I tried to install BLN control and blinky, but unfortunately BLN control complaints about kernel not supported. Are the folks on GB out of luck for now?
TIA!

The Fascinate doesn't have a notification LED...unless you are referring to the camera LED..If you want that to flash, try a flashlight app or something similar, but I don't think there is a way to make the camera LED flash for notifications, although would be kinda a cool..
alright whatever you call them. I really mean the softkeys that can be used as notifications. Blinking can be done by using BLN control pro or blinky, as long as kernel is supported. However, BLN control does not seem to like any of the kernels GB has....

The BLN built into JT's kernel, nemesis2all's, and Tk-Glitch's isn't BLN its something else. That's why they work but can't be controlled by BLN or blinky. Tk-Glitch has a good write up on what he uses for his kernel and his plan to impliment BLN control. Check here.

[Q] LED lights in CM nightly build #13

I was wondering how these worked, right now I have it enabled. Whenever I miss a call the bottom buttons on the bottom light up (menu, home, back...) and they do not go away until I clear the missed call notification. I was wondering if this is the way it is supposed to work? all there is to it? are there any settings where I can make them blink? I was thinking it would be more like the app noLED.
I'm sorry if this is a N00b question with an obvious answer, I have searched but can't find the answer.
thanks for any/all replies!
That's referred to as BLN (BackLight Notification). Its supposed to light up for missed calls, texts, emails, or any other notification. Its suppoed to state lit up til you clear it. What you are describing is expected behavior. There is an app in the market called BLN something, to manage it, built for the Captivate. There is also an app called blinky that worked on the captivate to make them blink.
In theory it should work better than NoLED, it should take less battery and processor. It hasn't been implemented in the stock based ROMs (for the S II) because it causes the phone to not enter deep sleep mode (as does noLED). It must be new to CM7. Hopefully if it doesn't cause a wake lock in CM7 it can be ported back to stock based ROMs. This is the last feature I was looking for in the custom ROMs for this phone.

Yes what he said above except Blinky and BLN APP will not work for cm7 on the SGS2. Cm7 has its own setting to control it. You can disable them if you don't want to use led notifications from with the settings or CyanogenMOD settings.
Yes it creates a wakelock until you clear the message, missed call, etc. Then the wakelock goes away. Also there is a timeout for the led notification that can be controlled also.

[Q] Rick's MIUI (1.12.9) and LED Notification

I decided "hey, I should probably update my MIUI" so I wiped data / cache / dalvik a million times, and installed Ricks MIUI.
I have no LED notifications for texts or whatever it may be, however before I upgraded I did. I see that in the new menu there is no "Trackball" or "LED notification" in the system settings anymore. I downloaded BLN to enable it and still nothing.
I just want my led to light up when I have a text or whatever.
Thanks!
Sometimes upgrading turns out worse than before. What version did you upgrade from, and is Rick's version different than the official releases over at MIUI?
I have rick's 12.9 MIUI and I am using BLN Control Pro and it is working.

Hm, I've tried BLN control (free) and blinky from the market and had mixed results. Blinky worked well, and allowed more control over the notification, but seemed to have a battery drain issue. BLN control only worked for one notification and stopped working after that.. I'm assuming you're running the glitch kernel that Rick's MIUI comes with?
I'm using Glitch V13 with Ricks MIUI, so yes. Before I had a JT kernal from 11/09 or something like that which worked perfectly
I think it might be kernel related then, I think I remember seeing sixstringsg say that there were going to be some changes to BLN in the next glitch release that should fix things. I suppose if you really need it, use that jt kernel. Personally, I couldn't deal with the color and lack of ability to change it with voodoo control on that kernel.
Glitch13 has the BLN notification bug, and CM7.1 has the in-call volume bug. Pick your poison.

[Q] Notification/LED Lights

I am currently running CM10.2 and I was wondering if anyone knew how to make the notifications lights at the bottom of the phone blink and possibly blink in different colors? Right now they just stay on.

Go on the play store and download Devil Kernel Manager. From there, i think you go the misc menu and scroll to the bottom. You should be able to find the BLN Blink setting. and cm10.2 comes with a modified Devil Kernel but it should work. don't use Devil Kernel Config, as that only supports 4.0.x and 4.1.x builds.
DKM unfortunately doesn't retain settings after a reboot so you're gonna have to go back and turn on the BLN blink after every reboot if you want it.

I downloaded the app and tried with the back light notification on and off, and with CM 10.2 notification light enabled and disabled, still only got a solid light that didn't blink. I am on stock kernel, is there a particular kernel that is known to work with blinking?

Devil Kernel is, but there aren't any 4.3 builds of it. Except the ones that are included with cm10.2
by the way, it might just be the fact that the 4.3 kernels aren't optimized to work with BLN Blink yet. give the devs some time, and remember the one rule of cyanogenmod: never ask for ETAs.
