[Q] (Q) how to flash without included recovery? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do I flash a ROM without the recovery included in the zip? How do i remove the recovery from the zip file before flashing? I'm trying to flash a ROM that has twrp recovery, it won't let me restore my backups from CWM, if i remove twrp from the zip do i need to insert cwm or just flash the zip with twrp removed thru my current cwm?

Check the rom for recovery.img.
Rest is hit and trial to remove it all together or replace it with the one with yours.
A bit of risk involved.
Keep the backups handy.

Well, is TWRP included for a reason? Since you didn't tell us which phone, it's pretty hard to give a good answer. There is no universal method for how to install roms as they can vary by phone, carrier, and update it's on. I know for some phones, when the recovery is included like that, it will flash the zip and install recovery then reboot to the new recovery to finish the install. Not all roms can work with all recoveries. I would re-read the installation instructions to make sure that this is not the case or that only that version of TWRP can be used with the new rom.
As far as how to remove (if needed, which I'm wary of without knowing the details...), you just need to use something like 7zip or WinRAR to open the zip as an archive and delete the recovery img. You do not want to unzip and rezip the contents because most likely it will break the signature of the rom and fail to flash in any recovery.

HTC Unlock - User Guides for Flash Image GUI!!
HTC Unlock - Users Guide for ROMs with a Kernel (boot.img file):
1) Unlock using HTC method
2) Load this application, Flash Image GUI, onto the device, either through the Market or the link provided in this OP.
3) Download ROM .zip file to the sdcard on the device.
4) Open up Flash Image GUI, select Browse and select the ROM .zip file, downloaded to /sdcard in the previous step.
5) Flash Image GUI will provide a warning, reminding that the ROM .zip file will *need* to be flashed in the custom recovery afterward.
6) Flash Image GUI will index the full ROM .zip file searching for the kernel and kernel modules. Once located, the Flash Image button should be enabled.
7) Select the Flash Image button and Flash Image GUI will load the kernel and kernel modules from inside the ROM zip file.
8) Once completed, turn off the device. (Assuming you've already loaded a custom recovery)
9) Hold volume down + power to boot into the bootloader. Select recovery.
9) Inside the custom recovery, load/flash the ROM zip file.
10) Reboot to normal Android mode and all should work including Wifi!
I don't know. I don't think anyone would know without trying. It was meant for a completely different phone, and we don't even have an official CWM yet. So I'd really say "Results may vary".

Definitely possible .. if I could get a tester or two, we could find out!
I was able to add support for the HTC Amaze 4G and the HTC Holiday/Vivid this last two weeks, both with HTC's Unlock method.

Yes, custom recovery is absolutely required as it is the only for sure, time tested reliable backup/restore method. If anything goes wrong, or a user flashes the wrong ROM/kernel combination, custom recovery is required to restore.
Hope this has been resolved!

[Q] Kernel Update Possible Questions

I been searching around all over the place and I am just hitting my head against the wall. Any help would be appreciated.
This is my setup: hboot 1.5 S-ON, I have unlocked using the HTC method. I have Revolutionary CWM recovery installed.
I am looking to update the Kernel and Radio/PRI of the phone to the latest versions. (I haven't done it in a very long time.)
By what I read, since I have hboot 1.5 updating the kernel seems close to impossible. I did read that I may have to go to a Stock Rom and update via sprint OTA to get the latest updates then unlock again? That doesnt sound right to me.
I am all types of confused. Part of this was started because I wanted to try the MeanROM (link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466362) and also update my phone. Everything I try to do fails or I cant do because of the 1.5 or the S-ON.
Hopefully i am making some sense. I dont know what I have to do to get the latest kernel or if it even is possible.
If you are rooted already the only thing you need to do is install flash GUI app (you can get it in the market) and flash the kernel (boot.img) file before you flash the ROM and you should be OK
There is a myth that if your on 1.5 s-on your doomed, that's not true. It does mean that you'll need an extra step to do things but you'll be able to get things done without issues.

Thank you for the reply, so I understand I can load that application, unzip the rom I want which will have the boot.img. Then flash that boot.img and then install that rom, is that correct? Lastly, does this also update the radio and pri?

If your firmware is compatible with the Rom and kernel yes. If not, you will brick your phone or features will not work as they have to do. After you install flash GUI go to browse button and you will be advertised that file is too large for a kernel or recovery image, then asks if it is a valid Rom zip file. Tap yes and it will search the kernel inside the Rom. After it finishes tap flash and after reboot in recovery(you have to have recovery.img in root of your SD card), next wipe dalvik and cache, install zip and wait until the phone finishes. It is also recommended to you to make a nandroid backup before install anything.

For the EVO 3D, much like the EVO 4G, the custom ROMs generally do not contain the radio or pri images.
There are some different reasons for this, but one of the common reasons being some users claim to experience different radio performance based on their geographic loation in relation to different versions of the radio and pri images.

The only clarification to this post would be having recovery.img in the root of your SD card is not required for rebooting into recovery mode. In order for a custom recovery to load, when rebooting into recovery mode, the recovery.img has to have been flashed previously. Flash Image GUI can also flash the recovery.img to the recovery partition so when you reboot into recovery, the proper custom recovery loads. Most users flash custom recoveries infrequently when compared to how often they flash ROMs so the process for flashing the recovery process isn't covered as often.
In general, regarding the OP's original question of flashing the "MeanROM", the Flash Image GUI thread provides a great beginner step by step guide I wrote to help walk thru the general overview and process. I've quoted it below for easy reference.
Appreciate all the support of Flash Image GUI! I'll echo the optimism for hboot 1.5 s-on unlocked users, most everything is still possible. HTC just requires an extra few steps which can be frustrating, but once they are learned, the process is fairly smooth.
Hope the clarification helps iron out any confusion on the details!

[Q] Flashing zip files

I've now rooted my locked-bootloader SXS. Now I'm now trying to figure how to flash a zip file...
With my old HTC Desire, I used to be able to copy a file to /sdcard, boot into recovery, and flash the file. With the SXS, there is no equivalent of recovery mode (it seems), and I have a zip file I need to flash.
In case you're wondering, I want to install "Secure Settings Helper", which gives Tasker access to root-only functions. It seems that the only way to install it is to flash it from Recovery, and therein lies my problem.
Can anyone give some guidance on how I can do this?
Hi, you need to flash a kernel with recovery with fastboot.
That makes sense. Am I right in thinking that I can't do that with a locked bootloader though?
Yes, youre right. Just unlock the bootloader, flash the kernel and enjoy. If u need help feel free to PM me
@down He could use ROM manager to install recovery but i havent tried that.
If you have locked bootloader you still can root and install cwm to flash zips.

[BACKUP] (V510) GPE ONLY LMY47O.L008 Stock For TWRP

This is a TWRP backup of the stock firmware for V510 GPE GPAD 8.3. They have already been updated. It is completely stock no mods, no root, no busybox. This should ensure that you are able to take future OTAs without issue. Many GPE users have been having problems with the OTAs. The reason is that the OTA does a system verification and any type of modification causes it to fail.
How to flash this:
1. Reboot into bootloader
2. Flash TWRP if you don't already have it. Current version is 2.8.1.0 fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxxxxxxxx.img (where xxxxx is the filename)
3. Reboot System
4. Copy the entire contents of the zip file to your TWRP/BACKUPS/LG0000XXXXXXXX folder. Make sure you copy the folder 2014-11-30--23-35-25 LRX21P.L004 or 2014-06-26--18-41-18 KTU84P.L002. If you don't have a backups folder, create one in TWRP by choosing Backup, then backup something like the boot partition.
5. Reboot to Recovery Vol Dwn+Pwr or adb reboot recovery.
6. Choose Restore and select 2014-11-30--23-35-25 LRX21P.L004 or 2014-06-26--18-41-18 KTU84P.L002
7. Once finished Reboot System.
8. Upon boot you should be greeted with the usual Setup screens.
9. Reboot into bootloader
10. (Optional for Kit Kat) Flash stock recovery: fastboot flash recovery 17-recovery.img
11. Reboot into system
.
Flashing the stock recovery is optional however if you want a completely stock experience and ensure future OTAs, you probably want to do so. Also note that you must unroot to take any future OTAs.
To reroot flash latest version of TWRP.

You did an excellent job on this thread. Thanks for doing this for our small community.
BTW: regarding recovery for our device, the latest (and in fact only) that I see is TWRP 2.7.0.1 in the Original Android Development section.
Agreed. I wasn't able to flash 4.4.4 any other way. Tried everything, kept getting errors. This finally worked!

Figured it will come in handy to have this online for everyone in the future...when I bought the device when it was announced thought there would be more dev on it...but that hasn't been the case. Luckily we at least have twrp.

I was not able to update using your image and I don't know why. Everything was done correctly as far as I know. I downloaded and unpacked the zip and placed it in the back apps folder of TWRP and rebooted into recovery and tried restore with no success during the system restore it stops halfway through and says failed.
I tried downloading the file twice, installing the file from my computer, changing my SD card, deleting everything and trying, deleting just dalvik cache a,updating the partition separately, and was able to update the boot partition but not system and data. I honestly don't know what the trouble is as I was able to restore my own back up several times.if anybody has any insight into what is happening here please tell me. I would really like to install the update! I don't know why it is not allowing me to.

First off, I use solid explorer, dual pane. Very easy to navigate for me.
I only copied system. I didn't even wipe. All my data and settings were intact. As close to an OTA I could get. The system backup was 790.95mb
It sounds like you did everything right to me. I included a screen shot of what it looked like after i clicked the backup.zip and moved the unzipped backup to the TWRP backup folder.

Do I need to uninstall Xposed Framework, unroot, restore the stock kernel, etc., before restoring this system back up TWRP? I assume the answer is no, though I'll need to reinstall those afterward, but I figured I'd check first!
UPDATE: Never mind. I just went ahead and restored it successfully and am in the process of restoring my apps from TiBu now. Thanks again for providing this for those of us who couldn't upgrade to 4.4.4 any other way!
Hey guys,
first off thank you for posting this tutorial, I was able to perform the backup0 and am currently on 4.4.4.
I did, however, run into a slight hiccup when I was trying to flash the stock recovery. I kept getting messages about partitions and so forth. I entered in the following commands from beginning to end:
adb devices
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery 17-recovery.img
but as I said I can't get the job done lol.
Any ideas?

A few things to check:
you need to have usb debugging checked on phone
you need the recovery image in same folder as your fastboot.exe/adb files
you need to cd to that directory/folder

[Q] Help Rezound won't boot.

A long time ago, I rooted my rezound. We had a broken phone so I factory reset the rezound and my nephew used the phone. I think he accepted an update or something and now it won't boot. I think I should be able to put a file on the card and put it back to the way it was.
I don't remember what I did to root it and need some help
I would like to put it back to stock or as close as possible. It would prefer to maintain root.
I would like to have the latest and greatest android version as long as it is easily installed. What I am looking for is stability, the least about of bugs. I found when I originally rooted the phone, it lost battery life when using the extended battery, Without rooting the phone would last for 2 to 3 days.
I read the other posts and I became confused with all the s-on and s-off as well as updating the radio other problems that might brick the phone. I don't want to brick the phone. I just want to know the file I need to download and the process to install it. The link location and a file that does not have a virus in it.
I had a hard time rooting the phone because I found the instructions complex. Please explain as if you were talking to a child that knows nothing about phones. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
These are the screens I can pull up.
Another question is can I get this back to factory if I want no more root.

I can help you keep a custom rom but looking into a stock rom I wouldn't remember how to do.
You will need;
ADB & Fastboot access from a PC
External SD card
1.) PH98IMG flash a custom recovery.
2.) Power down & Pull battery
3.) Remove sdcard Replace battery. Get into fastboot while connected pc.
4.) Remove battery, replace sdcard then battery and choose RECOVERY in fastboot.
5.) While in custom recovery Mount USB storage and rename or delete PH98IMG from external sdcard.
6.) Choose a custom rom & if aosp based a compatible GAPPS package.
7.) Extract boot.img from chosen custom rom zip
8.) Wipe /system /data /cache & flash custom rom(and GAPPS) of your choosing
9.) Reboot into bootloader and fastboot flash the matching boot.img ("fastboot flash boot **path to**/boot.img" using a PC)
10.) Start device normally and should be booted into custom rom you chose, give ~5mins for boot.
In your case you can ignore steps 1-5 unless you wish to update to the latest TWRP or CWM.
