The simplest way for me, is if you read the stickies and the current threads.
@adfurgerson has give a really good run down in this http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z-ultra/help/device-to-t2915726 thread

The only reason I stepped up in that thread is the root guide that is stickied is out of date after OP being banished. Hate to see anyone downgrading to root and all when it isn't needed.

I don't think it says to down grade does it? I'll have to re-read it.
Edit: Well it sort of does, but the next paragraph says that it is no longer needed...
We will need a new one when L comes along...

Hey Sorry Sweetlover but:
If you don't understand how to use search-button and if you are incapable to find a solution in this forum and if you don't understand the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754429, you are probably incapable to root your device.

OK. I'm also a noob, but I rooted my xperia s (with locked Bootloader) last week with this solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754429
If you read through the first post completly you will find the following phrase:
"Guide:
Before you root your device, your device must running Gingerbread. Flash it back to Gingerbread if your device are running Ice Cream Sandwich Open Run.dat and it will lead you through the process"
If you are on ICS you have to flash black to Gingerbread with Flashtool. Here the link to the Flashtool thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588586
And here the link to the xperia s firmware thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599303
There is no simple root-method at the moment, perhaps later, I don't know. Keep in mind: This is a new device and the development of a dedicated root-method keeps a lot of time. Please take a look at other threads and read through. Collect as much information as possible.

If you are planning to downgrade for rooting or otherwise is it good to factory reset your phone before flashing stock ROMs?

I had done that. When using the flashtool I had kept that option checked but when I did successfully (no errors messages in flashtool) flashed and downgraded to GB from ICS, I was not able to download any apps from play store. I was also unable to login into google chat. I was able to use my gmail app without any issues though. Is this normal?
I did xda and google search on this issue about not being able to login to google chat etc, almost 90% of them said that you have to remove your primary google account which is not possible to do unless you root or do a factory reset.

NO, you will have to downgrade to root, or you unlock the bootloader and flash a prerooted kernel, but bootloader unlocking is only for rom testers or people who like to experience custom roms, so think of it, because it voids warranty. For a how to look in my signature

at least as of this point in time, this is the only way to root ICS on ST15i and yes, you do have to downgrade to GB in order to accomplish this. no other known method unless you wanna unlock bootloader and try out a custom ROM
with regard to the other method you found of changing kernels, you cannot do that unless you have an unlocked bootloader as you cannot flash kernel with a locked bootloader...

[Q] Root update for the GPe?

Any update on root for the GPe? I'm about to purchase and don't want to be necessarily locked out of root apps like Adaway.
Can't find any info on the forum either. I swore I read somewhere a guy had the GPe and had root but cannot find that thread. Does it exist? Do any of the devs even have this device?
Yeah, you can root it. Just follow the steps here. Jump down to "Rooting GPe".

There's a whole forum for your phone there. If you have time, do some reading. There are lots of cool things to do. If you plan on modding your phone more than just rooting it, you should get familiar with how to use the Flash Tool. There's a Sticky in the Development forum for your phone about it.

Going back to stock, more details?

Hey guys!
I recently rooted, unlocked my bootloader and flashed a custom rom ( GPE ) Because I thought id get better battery life
I was wrong.
SO how do I go back to stock? I read the tutorial although It said something about having the right kernel? Wut.
Is it not just easy to flash stock over flashtool Or what
I want to keep the unlocked bootloader just go back to stock 4.4.2
Many thanks

Just flash the .757 FTF with Flashtool and you'll be fully stock again. If you want to root it then look at jackie099's thread for the .757 details on rooting it.

You're welcome. Sometimes it can get overwhelming or downright confusing especially when there's so many steps involved in an OP. Sometimes I wish they were more straight forward with less of the precautionary stuff but that would just cause the new folks even more headaches.
@MOD can this thread be closed and labeled as solved?
