[Q] Just got the phone. OTA is waiting to install. How do I avoid? - Sprint LG G3

Hello all,
I just got home from the Sprint store with my LG G3. I have the notification that the system update is ready to install. I'm assuming it's the lollipop update, and from what I've read, as of right now that's no bueno for rooting. I am not rooted as of yet, how can I stop it from taking effect? I want to begin the rooting process, but i am afraid when the phone does it's reboot, the OTA will install? Thanks

My apologies. I was having issues with Tapatalk. In the Q&A Stickies @engine95 posted a FAQ with helpful links such as what to do about OTA's etc. It's really useful for a launching pad for those that just got the device.

I doubt It's the lollipop update, it's most likely zv6. But you can stump root zv4 at least.

Just don't click the install button, just root put recovery on and if you want the stock lg flash barrin or the new stock lollipop. Your choice (both found on android develoment page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/development)

[Q] Root for My LG g3

I am generally new here to the forums and I would like to know how to root my LG g3. I know that it is rude to ask for help with out trying everything first so here is what I tried.
1. Stump Device is patched sorry
2. PurpleDrake --Reboots phone but does not root
3. IOroot does not work
4. TowelRoot-Does not root.
Here is some of my Sprint LG g3's information
Model Number LGLS990
Software Version LS990ZVG (IT came with the phone I did a factory reset) Some threads tell me I new to downgrade to ZV4, but I don't know how to do it safely some assistance would be much appreciated.

What is your android version?
We've only had zv2, zv4, and now zv6. If you have anything else, you either got Lollipop if your Android version is 5.0, or you don't have a Sprint phone.
And as far as we know Lollipop isn't out yet for Sprint, and there's probably no root for it yet.
@tbruff13
This explains that you have to roll back.
In your case back to ZV4 in the general section you can find a guide on how to do this.

If it works anything like the other GS4's than you will need to flash a pre-rooted lollipop build using Flashfire (or safestrap, but you probably won't be able to access safestrap after flashing lollipop).
I always just followed the directions posted by muniz_ri in the [How-To] root thread in this forum. I guess stay tuned! I didn't use safestrap cause I thought we couldn't.

its a staged rollout, meaning that if it doesn't come to you now it'll come soon
like in the next few days from what i can tell. verizon always does their rollouts like this.
Well, crap. I really really want this update. But no xposed for lollipop touchwiz, no custom ROMs, no deodex, and a one time shot at the root method really kills it for me.

Yeah, if you're rooted, on whatever bootloader, best to wait and give these guys time to do what it is we're all for. If this is anything like the other carriers, or past OTAs (especially ones since 4.3) you'll b sorry if u get impatient.
I'd help but My phone is rom'd and I can't live with stock touchwiz/ not being able to go back to ng6/nc5. If it were the s3 however...

[Q] How To Root VS985 on Lollipop 5.0.1

I know this has probably been asked a few times but I can't follow along for whatever reason.
I'm wanting to root my Verizon LG G3 on Lollipop 5.0.1 [Release VS98523C]
I have never rooted this phone before. It is entirely stock.
How can I do this or can it be done?

Somehow I managed to overlook where it says you can just unroot in within SuperSU. Lol.
Thanks again, man.
Now if I can just manage to find an updated version of TWRP for this phone that I can flash via AutoRec.
Once you are rooted TWRP manager from the Play Store will do all that for you also.

The issue though with unrooting is it just removes root, but does not put the G3 back into stock condition. If you look under settings->About Phone->Software info, you'll see it shows it as "Modified" which means no OTAs will be accepted more than likely. The only way to go back to pure stock is to flash via KDZ or TOT images, which wipes your phone. That's the only way to get back to pure stock where it won't show modified as the status.
To learn more about the G3, I would suggest going to the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help/help-thread-lg-g3-question-t2947298
From reading through that post, I learned everything I needed to about the LG G3 when I was considering switching to it and knew that I would be able to flash ROMs, root, etc. It is what sold me on getting the phone.

[Q] need help updating to lollipop!

Hi, I'm new here. Thanks to everyone who responds to this. I have a sprint lg g3, and I used stump root I believe to root the phone when I got it. My question is, how can I update to lollipop now? I don't mind getting rid of root or super SU. I don't use it for much anyway. Every time I try manually updating to lollipop it says there's no update. Thanks again for any replies.

What version are you running? ZV4, ZV6, or ZV8?
I'll assume it's ZV4 because Stump worked. Then all you need to do is "Bump" for recovery.
It's all in the FAQ if you are on ZV4.
Ya, it's zv4. Thank you. Do you think the update is worth it? I read somewhere that it wasn't any good.

Current Verizon LG G3 (its 99 cents on sale, I have some questions)

Its time for an upgrade and I am eyeing the G3. Its currently $.99 on upgrade, and the price is playing a big part in my decision as money is tight right now and my older S3 is falling apart.
The thing that draws me to this phone is its unlocked bootloader. I have tried to research on my own, and what I have found is that you can get a custom recovery and ROM on a G3 from most stock OOB configs.
However, I cant find any super recent talk of it. That doesnt mean there isnt, it just means I havent found it on this forum or elsewhere and my Search-Fu is probably weak.. I believe I read that the G3 was recently updated OTA to lolipop, and my question is does the CURRENT, brand new G3 from verizon still have the capability to install custom roms? I am no smartphone expert, ive rooted and custom rom'd an old tablet and I am confident in my technical skills, and I just want to make sure that the phone (which i probably will go pick up from the VZW store tomorrow) is still viable because if its not, ill probably get a different phone. I will go deeper into research mode once I know for sure, I am worried though that the bootloader has been locked as this happened to the S3 later in its life after the Kitkat upgrade.
TLDR is a new G3 from verizon still ROM'able and such?
Thank you for your help, this is a pretty awesome site/forum and I hate to bother you all with noobish questions!

Plan on kdz'ing or tot'ing back to the stock firmware (10B), and then root, unlock, and install TWRP (custom recovery), and you'll be good to go to install custom roms! All OOB firmwares from Verizon can be kdz'ed or tot'ed back to the stock firmware, so yes that's a HUGE plus.

That's correct. And whether or not you want a custom ROM, I would still root AND unlock, that way you can install TWRP, take nandroid backups, etc. and thereby make it easier on yourself if you ever jacked up the phone doing something with root. I figure if you're gonna go to the trouble of rooting, might as well unlock too. Just my 2 cents

Technically, it's not unlocked. There is an exploit that allows you to flash custom ROMs and kernels as if the bootloader was unlocked. On the surface, yes. You could say it's unlocked, but it it were truly unlocked, you could flash TWRP without having to be rooted. But you can't replace the recovery correctly without being rooted first. Hence, it's an exploit that skirts around the locked bootloader. It's still locked, but an exploit allows you to flash TWRP after you are rooted.
Here's what I know:
The first thing you must do is root the phone. You can root 24B as stated earlier by an earlier post.
Once rooted, you can flash TWRP but only if you are not on 24B. If you are on the latest OTA (24b), you can still flash TWRP, but it requires some extra steps. However, there is an app for this that you can install and run and it will prep your phone for TWRP and then install TWRP. It's basically a one-click TWRP install. You can get it in the Google Play store at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=b007.autorecvs985. Saves a lot of headaches.
So, I can one-click root my phone. Then install the LG G3 AutoRec-LP app to flash TWRP for me and I'm done!
You're bootloader is not unlocked, but TWRP is a "bumped" version. Bumping is the term they use for taking advantage of the exploit. But, you can't just flash any ROM out there for the G3. ROMs are specific to the model of the phone you have. For instance, you cannot take a D855 version (UK version of G3 I believe) of a ROM and flash it on your VS985 version. You'll brick it. ROMs have to also be "bumped" in order to work and be flashed, hence that is why the ROMs are specific to each model of the G3.
So if the AT&T version of the g3 has a ROM but the Verizon doesn't have that particular ROM, it's because the dev hasn't bumped their ROM for VS985. So, you can only flash those ROMs that are bumped for VS985.
But, the bumped version of TWRP and the ROMs act the same as if you had an unlocked bootloader, but it's an exploit that could be patched in the future. For whatever reason, LG and Verzion have not done that. Not sure why. But, caution on blindly taking any future OTAs. I would wait until you hear whether you can either revert back to a previous version to exploit and still root and bump on that previous version or not. Otherwise, you will be SOL.
As for unlocking the bootloader, that has only been allowed for overseas variants of the G3, but there is one issue that many might now like. When you truly unlock the bootloader with LG's unlocking tool, DRM is removed (which many would love), but then that means, some movie streaming services you use might not work any more because of the DRM removal. So, my feeling right now is, bumping is the best way to go.
Here's LG's description of what happens when you unlock it officially using their tool (mind you, as I stated, this is only for overseas variants of the G3):
