[Q] Completely new to LG, need some advice - Verizon LG G3

I'm a veteran of the HTC phones (and at least used to Samsung devices), but my friend wants his G3 to have a custom ROM on it. So I start looking around threads, and I didn't find any straightforward instructions on someone starting out.
Do I need to be S-Off or unlock a bootloader or anything like that? Or do I just grab the custom recovery and ROM, adb the recovery, and install the ROM? Everything I see just says to install the ROM from TWRP and go, but that's not very helpful unfortunately. He's on the latest LP ROM and firmware from Verizon, and I did at least see that this won't be a problem (unlike other devices where newer firmware can sometimes cause unlock issues. I'm probably going to install the Jasmine ROM on his phone to keep it relatively stock for him.
I'll take directions or even just a link if somebody has one handy. Thanks ahead of time for the help

Best/easiest option,
Downgrade to 12b using kdz
Root w/new root method
Flash twrp (adb, flashify, or dd)
Flash jasmine L Rom base
Flash jasmine L small upgrade builds if available
Profit!
Most links can be found in op 2 of my Reference sticky in the Verizon general forum.

Thanks, somehow missed that thread. Glad to see its relatively straightforward with LG, considering it's not my phone and I haven't had an LG to work on (until I get the G4 ).

[Q] Noob question about rooting and OS's

I rooted my NT back in Dec. 2011 when I bought it, using instructions from this forum. (thank you!) I also used the fix to stop it from automatically getting the B&N updates.
I've been happy with the NT as it is now, but I'd like to be able to run things like Xbox Smartglass, and I see that we can use CM10 on the NT.
My questions are "should I? and can I?" Would I have to take the NT back to stock and then start over? Boot from SD or root? Is this even something a noob should be attempting?
As long as it's rooted, no you shouldn't have to take it to bone stock.
Do you already have a custom recovery installed? If so, it's super easy. If not, follow the instructions in the development forum on how to flash a custom recovery. Keep in mind you need CWM 6+ or TWRP 2.2+ (I think, never used twrp) to flash a jellybean rom.
Should you? Totally up to you. As long as you don't mess with the touch firmware (don't install 5 touch) then you can always go back to where you are now.
Every rom has some issues. I haven't found a single one that's issue free. Most of the newer ones run without any major issues.

TWRP 2.1.3 will handle ICS and JB ROMS... BUT WAIT! If you plan to update the touchpad firmware (which I highly recommend) and use one of the 5 touchpoint ROMS, make sure you are using CWM, not TWRP! Once you update the firmware, you won't be able to use TWRP (that is, you can still boot to recovery, and TWRP will load without problems, but it won't register any touches on the screen...)
This thread has the updated version of CWM, and will (eventually) have a link to the updated version of TWRP, once it's ready for prime time.

There are a few excellent threads in the General forum that are a really good place to start. Here are three to start with that should give you a good grounding on what's going on when you root and flash your tablet, and step-by-step instructions on how to do it:

[Q] Could somebody explain to me what a flashible modem and image is?

I'm coming fresh from a Droid Rzr Maxx (2011) and ready to root this bad boy. I'm on VS985 and seeing some horror stories of not being able to unroot it and yaddah. But I've done my reading and can't seem to understand this whole "modem/image flashing" thing. Could somebody give me an ELI5 or tl;dr?

I am wondering the same thing... This is my first lg device coming from htc and I think it's the same thing as flashing new radios.
An OTA or a ROM contains the system, boot, and modem images, along with a bunch of other stuff. If you take an OTA or flash an entire ROM, you get all of it. But taking an OTA is a big no-no if you've already rooted and/or have a custom recovery, so one way to get an update without doing that is to flash the system, boot, and modem .img manually. (See here) Those three contain the "meat" of an update and is usually what you want out of it.
Basically, you just put the three img files on your sdcard in your phone in a specific folder and use the zip files (already built and provided at the link above) and flash them in TWRP like you would anything else.
You always want to make sure the senior developers have had a look at the OTA and confirm that the imgs are safe to flash, though. An OTA needs to be checked for anti-rollback code, root patches, etc.
In the case of the 11C update, it does patch the root methods currently used for 10B. So you can only root if you're on the 10B version. If you have stock 11C, you need to rollback with the KDZ for the 10B version here.
If you have 10B, Stump and Bump both work great. It's also safe to flash the only the 11C modem.img if that's just what you want. It's a good update, too.

Awesome! Thanks a bunch for this, very thorough. I'm sitting on 10b because I'm on the fence of rooting with L on the way here (hopefully) soon. So last question. If I stump then bump for TWRP, I can flash 11C and still hold root? Thanks.

If you mean flashing the system, boot, and modem images, yes, you will still have root. That's what I did. You can also flash a ROM called JasmineRom to update, because that ROM is version 11C now as well. There is also a flashable rooted version of 11C here. The only way to be rooted on 11C right now is if you already had it on 10B. Hopefully not for long!

The Devs here will have a ported version of Android L long before the official update makes it down the pipeline from Verizon. The Bump site for developers was opened today and a version of CM11 and LiquidSmooth are both already Bump'd and ready to flash to the VS985. They are AOSP based and of course running 4.4.4. You don't need to worry about flashing the modem on top of the incorrect rom as I can report that I just flashed the 11C modem on top of LiquidSmooth with zero issues. The modem image is basically all you'll ever need to obtain officially from LG if you want to run custom roms. Also, @bunchies said that LiquidSmooth version of Android L is coming very soon, and he makes fantastic roms! If you are looking for more of an LG experience, the Android L official KDZ for the F400 has already been leaked and is running on those devices. This means that it will only be a matter of time before someone Bumps and ports that to the other variants, including our VS985.

Oh thank goodness, I didn't know the Bump site opened today. I vouch for LiquidSmooth as well, it was my #1 go-to on my Galaxy S3.

Going to buy this today...thoughts on this phone?

Depending on the SW that is installed you might have to downgrade first to get TWRP installed.
I can't answer about the ROM since I run Jasmine 8.0.
Plan on having to downgrade using the kdz or tot method to software version 10B, but other than that one you're to that then rooting & unlocking (I've always just used stump and bump, respectively) is as easy as it gets. Make sure to do plenty of reading, as always!

So I think I've settled on the G3. I'm switching from iPhone on AT&T and I have until the 11th of September....right now they have a special when you switch...basically a $300 credit. You mention downgrading...any tricks to this? I snagged the Verizon LG G3 All-in-One Toolkit ....hope that's all I need. I've rooted and installed mods for my Galaxy Tab 2 and a couple other Samsung phones that had no phone service, but this will be my first go at using Andoid as a cell phone. Any other advice would be awesome...thank you.

This is the exact thread I've always followed to downgrade back to software version 10B:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/restore-verizon-to-stock-t2827878
Once you're back at 10B, follow this guide to use "Stump" to root (and as long as you're back on 10B, you can ignore the warning message about discontinued development at the top of the OP):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/root-stump-root-lg-g3-sprint-verizon-t2850906
Then, once you're done with all that, simply use "flashify" from the play store to flash a "bumped" recovery image - I'd recommend TWRP, which can be found here....use the latest version - 2.8.7.0:
https://dl.twrp.me/vs985/
Read each thread about 3 times before attempting, and as long as you can follow instructions you'll be golden.

Last question on this....should I back up the phone before I start? Not sure....is there a proper method for backing up the LG3? Thanks all.

Need help making a couple choices

Hey guys, so the last phone I rooted and had a bootstrap on with custom roms was the Motorola Droid x2. We couldn't even get into the kernel. So with that being said I've acquired super user on my g3 months ago to freeze apps. But now I don't depend on my phone like I did then for work. So I want to do the whole thing and I'm unsure what choices to make. I'm not looking for a guide for installing stuff (at least not yet ) just trying to get suggestions and hopefully good recommendations.
So here's the main point for the post
TLDR!!!!!
Current android version 5.0.1
kernels- unlock it? Change it? Not sure what all you can actually do with that.
Bootstrap- clock work mod? Or any other one can't think of names but need something to load roms
Rom for battery and power- cyanogenmod is what I use to run on the x2 not sure if it's still one of the best?
Anything else I missed that I should get and check out?
Thanks in advance
Put TWRP custom recovery on your phone with the autorec TWRP app by @bender_007, in the General section of the non-variant specific G3 sections. Once you give the app superuser permissions it looks like it's hung up but give it 10-30 seconds because it's backing up your current recovery. Then click the button to install TWRP. Download the latest TWRP v2.8.7.0 from its thread also somewhere in the G3 sections, and flash it from your current TWRP.
I use @xdabbeb 's VS985 v2.0 ROM, which is based on the latest official LG ROM, build 35B, based on Android 5.1.1. Very happy with it, very smooth and great on battery.
I haven't heard the term bootstrap with regards to custom recoveries. I'd suggest just calling them custom recoveries.
Thanks for your input it's been a while after I read it I was like yep it's custom recoveries lol thank you again

its you. i used a pc to access the site most of today and haven't had an issue.
Alright thanks I'll look into my pc then. Also I haven't decided if I want to flash a custom kernel I don't know what all it can change any advice?

Looking for some Help with rooting, and maybe some General Advice.

Hello all and thank you for stopping by to assist me. I am trying to root my Verizon LG G3. I am not sure what all information you need so I am just going to post as much information as possible about my device below.
Model Number : VS985 4G
Hardware Version : Rev. 1.0
Android Version : 6.0
Kernel Version : 3.4.0-perf-gf128999
Build Number : MRA58K
Software Version : VS98546A
And that is all I can think of. I tried to OneClickRoot or whatever it is but it says my device is not supported. I tried to follow some Youtube Videos, but the all lead to "Do my survey, my links are legit, I promise" stuff so... I got no where.
Can anyone help lead me in the direction to getting my device rooted?
Also I see a lot about TWRP? Anyone willing to elaborate on what that is or if its something I want?
Edit: What I am trying to accomplish is a rooted device that I can (Hide My Root) on, and use an app such as LocationFaker to fake my location and allow me to play a location based game with a friend in another state.
Whenever I try to play the game without root it is unable to detect my location for says GPS Failed or what have you, I just want to trick it to thinking I am near my friend so we can play together.

So the easiest way to root the g3 is to use the tot method that you can find here on xda. And tot back to 10B from there you can use stump root (that is also here on xda) and use brute force mode, it'll work on the g3 I've used it a whole bunch in mine. After that you can download twrp manager from he playstore and get twrp recovery installed. After that you can pretty much do anything you want. Flash a custom rom, flash xposed and I think if I remember right there was a module in there for location as for what you're seeking. Just make sure you read up on what bootstacks you need to flash when flashing different roms. You can soft brick yourself and can be a pain in the ass. So just read read read especially the flashing instructions.

This is good news! I'm in the same boat, wanting to know if I can root a VS985 running marshmallow. I bought a G4 AT&T variant, which is also on marshmallow and after I received it I found out that it cannot be easily rooted. A very risky process if possible at all, and a big disappointment. Up for sale it goes, and I am here scouting information to see about the possibility of rooting a vs985 on marshmallow. Hopefully it's a lot less risky and a lot easier.

Yes it is relatively easy when you tot back to 10B anything after that it starts to get harder to root and also install twrp recovery.

Okay, so I have done some reading based on what you have told me. I have found a small tutorial for TOT'ing (I don't know if I am using that right) back to 10B, because from what I understand I am at 46A.
Now, one of the things is instructing a guy on how to then "flash a bootstack?" back to 35B and then flash again to 47A. Do I need to do all that? Can I stay at 10B and do what I need?
I believe (based on what I gathered from your post) that I just need to see what I want, for instance : flash xposed, and see which bootstack that requires?
Great! I assume then that there is less risk in downgrading on the G3 MM than G4 MM. From what I understand, the locked bootloader on most G4 variants (except some such as t-mo h811 or internt'l H815) complicates the life of anyone who tries to downgrade or flash anything, with significant risk of bricking or bootlooping.

Yes from 35B and up you have to use the tot method to get to 10B. And no from a rooted 10B with twrp flashed you can flash any rom like xdabbebs 47A marshmallow rom which uses the 35B bootstack, but on sky dragon and Jasmine roms for marshmallow you will flash the 35B bootstack after you flash the rom, other wise you'll soft brick your phone. But its recoverable with doing the tot method again, you just won't see anything on your screen but it will work.
And for xposed there are certain versions for different foresees like kitkat, lollipop and marshmallow. And the vs985 uses the arm NOT arm64. I hope this makes some more sense to you, and there's some awesome people here with the g3's that are also willing to help. So don't hesitate to ask, it's how I've learned a lot of stuff.
