M9 Canadian roaming? - Sprint HTC One (M9)

The M9 is the first HTC phone I have ever owned that does not work in Canada, at all.
The evo, evo 3d, m7, and m8 all worked flawlessly in canada. The m9 gets no signal. I called support and they also sent me to international support, and neither was able to get it working. Obviously roaming is enabled, as well as international voice. Still no signal whatsoever. I then went into *#*#4636#*#* menu and tried changing the preferred network type to every possible option. On the GSM options, the phone would actually get a signal, but whenever you attempt to make a call it just drops immediately.

Found this info over on s4gru:

the One M9 was not tested, thus is not authorized for domestic GSM/W-CDMA bands. Rabid phone unlockers under the new Sprint domestic unlocking policy, consider yourselves forewarned.

CONFIRMED. The Sprint m9 lacks the neccessary radio bands to work in Canada! The more I use this phone the more I hate it.
http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/6910-htc-one-m9-user-thread/?view=findpost&p=418575
Vis a vis wireless, traveling to Canada has now become almost no different from traveling to the UK. You need a GSM/W-CDMA capable handset -- because Bell and Telus were basically asshats in preemptively ditching CDMA2000 for GSM/W-CDMA, circa 2008. My understanding is that the CDMA2000 network now is almost entirely shut down, and Sprint has removed CDMA1X/EV-DO roaming from its latest PRLs.
Regardless, if you care about RF capabilities in your flagship handset, do not take anything for granted. You should always read our FCC OET article before making a purchase. And we typically publish within a day or two of the FCC OET authorization going online, thus usually weeks before the handset hits stores.
I have to assume that you did not read our article on the HTC One M9. We devoted an entire paragraph to its lack of domestic GSM/W-CDMA bands (i.e. GSM 850/1900 and bands 2/4/5 W-CDMA).

I would have to assume that no one on the planet aside from him and two other nerds read their article on the HTC M9. How many people read the dry ass articles of s4Gru? I used to be a member back when I was tracking LTE implementation for Sprint in Sacramento but I haven't looked back since. I don't like paying just to read a forum site about back hauls, transponders and flux capacitors. Sh!t I could barely suffer through the GSM/M-CDMA#4636#* in this thread.
Bummer the phone don't work in Canada though.

So it's HTC/Sprint's fault you didn't do your homework or think to ask them if the Sprint M9 variant could roam in a foreign country?
Sell the damn thing on swappa already.

It's Sprint's fault for selling a brand new flagship phone that can't roam in Canada. That's just plain stupid on Sprint's part, and they really should have known better.
I 1000% guarantee that if you were to walk into a Sprint store and ask about that new HTC One M9 and if you'd be able to roam in Canada, you would receive a "yes" answer every time. They'd even tell you about Sprint's cool discount roaming plans for Canada. Do not blame someone for not "doing their homework" when really only people with an intimate knowledge of the situation and who read s4gru (0.1% of Sprint's customers, if that) would know about this. This is on Sprint.

I retract my comment - (though both OP and I are on S4GRU and have been for some time) - as I just got off a chat with Sprint Worldwide support where they said the M9 is an international phone entirely capable of roaming voice and data in Canada. I'm asking on S4GRU how Sprint can make that claim when OPs experience is obviously different.
Wondering if this is all related to the issues the phone is having with data in general...

It's roaming just fine in Canada. Check the screen shots.

lol...I was in several countries in the Caribbean 10 days ago & roamed np...yes, not in Ca but verified WCDMA worked fine

So... not confirmed that there is no Canada roaming. That's a relief if it does actually work in Canada. I would not want to travel up there just to find out I can't use my phone.

Is there a US carrier lock on the Photon's SIM card slot?

Can the Photon 4G be used on AT&T or T-Mobile after unlocking the SIM card slot?
As far as whether or not the GSM radio is locked... no it isn't.
However, the software for the GSM radio is written in such a way that makes the phone "ignore" US based GSM carrier networks.
The TouchPro2, the last Smartphone world phone offering from sprint had this same implementation. It required a custom radio written to get around it.
So you are saying a rooted phone can actually use an AT&T sim or T-Mobile sim?

Not really. Rooted just means you now have admin access to the phone basically, does nothing else.
What he is saying is that the software the controls the radio would have to be rewritten in order to accept US GSM networks.
Whats funny though, is that i went into a no CDMA coverage area 2 days ago, and I got a message on my Photon that asked if I wanted to use the available GSM networks. I allowed it and it roamed off of a GSM network...calls worked great, data was very slow.

You were in the US when you did this? If so what Sim card is in your phone? and do you have the phone roaming set to auto, because the default is any CDMA.

Yes, actually in the west Michigan area. The SIM card is the standard that came with the phone. It was set to automatic when I got it, never actually looked at the roaming settings until I got that message.

my pleasure, for me it just means im less likely to lose service or drop calls. which very useful. utilizing that feature greatly improves the coverage map.
I would check on this first. For one the roaming agreement that Sprint has is only with Verizon(CDMA). From what I gathered on Sprints website they do not mention who they are in agreement with on roaming in the US but CS told me Verizon is who I would be roaming on. So I would check your account for strange charges before you go crazy using GSM, but at any rate this is awesome info.

Sprint used to have roaming agreements with AT&T, Dobson, Cellular One, etc back in the days of "Analog Roaming". I wonder if something here might be a legacy from that.

That sounds good, but remember if 50% of your calls are roaming three months in a row, or 50% out of 12 month average then they will cut your contract and cancel your account.
I put a working T-mobile SIM in my Photon today and it did not work. It appears that the unlocked status of the phone does not extend to US carriers. I would be interested to see how the included SIM behaves in Canada with Bell or Telus who are roaming partners for Sprint and have both CDMA EvDO Rev A and HSPA+ networks.

[Q] Unlock for use on att

I have searched the photon forums with no complete answer. Is there any way to unlock it to work with At&t.
Sprints past practice on world phones is for the GSM to be unlocked but to have the radios blocked for any US GSM carriers
Yes sprint had done that in the past.....but hopefully just as the TP2 was unlocked for us networks so will this badboy......where the heck is comnex or whatever her name is.....she was the wizard

(I'm always amused by people trying to go TO AT&T.. I guess if you have a family plan)
No US Sprint phone will EVER work on AT&T, TMobile, or Verizon... period. This is a timeless question with the same answer every time. Even if the phone supports International GSM... it doesn't support domestic GSM.. and will never
Uhm...why. please explain.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
A better question might be why unlock this phone for use on AT&T. I switched from AT&T to Sprint because Sprint is better. You should too.
Aside from Sprint being better
There are US communication laws. You'd think by now they would make a single phone and just put all GSM and CDMA frequencies in the same phone and be done with it... let it activate anywhere..
But carriers would never be able to keep a customer if they were flipflopping the signal of the moment. Sprint especially would never risk losing customers to another carrier.
The Photon's hardware does support the US GSM frequencies. I am sure at some point someone will figure out a way to reprogram the phone to get around not being able to register on domestic GSM carriers.

Wrong. The HTC Touch Pro 2 was a int'l phone like the photon. It also had the US GSM carriers locked out. Eventually there WAS a hack that got the phone working with att et al.

Just as the last user pointed out, you are incorrect. I personally Had a Sprint touch pro 2 which I used on both Tmobile and Att networks. You could simply make a few screen taps to get from network to network. There is no doubt that as the photon gets more popular the Devs will figure out an unlock.....
So does it mean that if it gets unlocked it will be able to work not only on at&t but with other carriers also?

When Unlocking, always use unlocking codes. There are many sites providing unlocking codes. I had a personal experience in unlocking my BB 8900 phone from ClassicUnlocking.com which is a reliable service unlocks the phone within 30 minutes and also cheap.

I am hoping so. My new wife is with AT&T and where we are going to live, Sprint's data is HORRIBLE. My 3G speed never exceeds 400 kbs where her 3G speeds will top 2100 kbps. Also, AT&T DOES have 4G in the neighborhood. So, I'm hoping to be able to pop her SIM card in and use the faster data once in a while, but still retain the unlimited (slow) data from Sprint.
So, unfortunately, there ARE reasons to choose AT&T over Sprint. Personally, I wish Sprint would improve their network.

No luck for you. Still waiting on a magic fairy to give us a radio that unlocks domestic gsm.
I wouldn't hold your breath on GSM. you could always get an atrix if you are tied into a contract, same hardware essentially, I think most of us are pushing for custom roms like cm7 and a boot loader that doesn't loose 4g. I'm sure at some point it will happen on the photon.

[Q] Unlocked htc evo view?

I'm thinking of buying an htc evo view on amazon, but I need it to be unlocked, because I'm going to be living in mexico for a while, so I want to make sure that it will work with another network that isn't sprint. I couldn't really find any htc evo views that are unlocked, but this one http://www.amazon.com/HTC-EVO-View-...EMR6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327199558&sr=8-1 says it doesn't require a sprint account. Does this mean I can take it to mexico and get CDMA if the company of the network supports CDMA? It seems that Iusacell is the only company that supports CDMA in Mexico. Has anybody tried to get another network on it?
Sorry if i'm not using the cell phone network terminology correctly, im new to all this 3g, 4g stuff .
Edit: Ok, so i know now that I can unlock it in Mexico. So now my question is, if I buy this, will I not have to have a contract with sprint or anything?
There is no need for you to contact Sprint; I have an "unlocked" view that I use for business on Boost Mobile, and have not had any issues. Enjoy your new device!
Depends where and how you buy it...just read the ad, it will mention if it requires a contract or not. You just missed a one day sale for a no contract View for $230. Should be another one coming in a few weeks if you can wait. Keep an eye out here or on Slickdeals.net hot deals.
Since the View is a CDMA device, it can't be unlocked in the traditional sense that a GSM device can be unlocked. There is nothing to unlock. The only way to get it to work on a different carrier is if the carrier is willing to add it to their system (which most carriers will not do, although I can't speak for any carriers in Mexico), or if you can flash it to a different carrier. Many have successfully flashed it to Boost Mobile in the US like bigriggy63 said, but this isn't an option with most carriers. It's something you'd have to check into locally with the carrier you want to use.
The link you posted says it's with no Sprint contract, so there shouldn't be a contract. The View has been sold in multiple sales over the past few months for $230 - $300 without a Sprint contract. I've had one since the middle of the December, and I don't have, or never have had, Sprint service.

Dear members,
Hello.
Is it related to WiMAX providers as well?
Locally (Moscow) we have WiMAX provider. I failed to connect using my View.
View is not in their list. HTC MAX (Windows not Android) is in their list.
So let me ask two questions
1. Do I have chance to connect? Is it worth efforts?
2. What kind of information I should check woth local carrier ?
Thanks,

T-Mobile HTC One on AT&T

I have my Tmobile HTC One on At&t LTE right now and I have done a speed test reaching 35mbps. You do have to make sure your account has had a prior LTE device on the account or the device might only get 3G speeds. I told the phone rep to put my wife's unused HTC One X on my line and gave them the IMEI of that phone. The reason for this is because At&t does not have the Tmobile models in their database, so the only thing they can do is link your One to your line as a generic 3G device.

Your tip worked on my Note 2. Once I got ahold of an LTE devices IMEI to give the AT&T rep, they were able to provision my account for LTE and now no issues.
I just picked up a T-Mobile HT One to do the same thing with (I have accounts on TMo and ATT), but the sim unlocking service I usually use is having troubles giving me an unlock code. Weird.

Same situation here: I bought a T-Mobile HTC one, unlocked it, took it to AT&T, and after a lot of wrestling with them got AT&T LTE and HSPA+ both working (you will need to make sure: your AT&T account is provisioned so your data plan is LTE-capable; you have an LTE-capable SIM card; you have endless patience to push AT&T to give you a 'dummy' IMEI in their database of an LTE-capable phone).
Here's my issue, though: it runs hot whenever the wifi OR the data are on. I'm wondering if it's because I'm running the T-Mobile radio (4A.14.3250.15_10.34.1150.02L) on AT&T's network.
I've been told Android phones "just run hot," or that heat is a product of a rogue application (so far, nothing seems to be running when it shouldn't). I am new to the forums so I can't post over in the development area yet.
Anyone have any thoughts on whether trying a different radio would address the heat issues? Any other heat-diagnosing tips?
Thanks in advance!
does anyone know if you can use the htc one tmobile version with at&t's dumbphone unlimited data plan?

Why dont you get T-Mobiles $30 5Gb data plan? Or T-Mobiles $50 unlimited plan?

If you don't mind, would you share what sim unlocking service you used?

I can tell you why I am looking to go to ATT its because T-Mobiles coverage sucks. I have constant issues with their network.
Also when you think about it why would you offer a connection over wifi, shouldn't their phone work.
I bought a prepaid card just to test but I didn't connect to their LTE but I think its because they haven't provisioned it properly.
Time to go back again. I think I want to keep the HTC one because its a good phone can't see getting the S4.
Now att has next but still has the rate plans up there. I like t-mobiles pricing but ATT service is much better.
Find a nice AT&T Salesperson
I used to work at AT&T and i've just used a generic IMEI to provision LTE on a non AT&T phone. If you find a nice salesperson to help you they'll be able to look up a generic IMEI in the systaem for you. Its an internal tool they have to look up an IMEI for you. Hope this helps.

[Q] DNA to Straight Talk T-Mobile vs AT&T

I currently have a Droid DNA through Verizon and would like to switch to Straight Talk. I see options for both AT&T and T-Mobile compatible SIM cards, and am curious which one I should go with. I live in the Houston area. I prefer not to have to cut the card but it's not a deal breaker.
In my area AT&T has much wider and more reliable data coverage. I was often on edge everywhere in my hometown while on T-Mobile. This may not be the case for Houston. Just test drive both networks for a month each.
Ah, excellent point. Should be cheap enough to try them both. Thanks!
I actually work in Electronics at Walmart and deal with this all the time. Straight Talk will not move 4G LTE phones to their service. They aren't compatible and do not have the agreements with carriers for LTE access. If you read the CDMA/GSM bring your own phone package that includes the SIM cards it says in bold writing LTE Phones are not compatible. The DNA would not be able to be used on Straight Talk because it is a LTE phone. Straight Talk has a list of approved devices on their website. Because you do have to provide your phones IMEI they will know it is a LTE phone and deny your request to activate the phone on their services.
Kutster, I hate to correct you but I actually did successfully connect my Droid DNA using the Walmart SIM card. Now in my area it was actually called FamilyMobile, and run by T-Mobile. I purchased a SIM card from Walmart, took it home, plugged it in, set up an account, and it worked. Granted, you don't get LTE, but it does work and is mega cheap ($40/mo unlimited). I ended up cancelling and taking it back, simply because the internet was very slow, and the coverage wasn't very good in my area (T-Mobile sucks in my area). I do want to stress though that it definitely does work! I think I'll try AT&T GoPhone next.
The important thing to remember is this phone (the DNA) has all the radios necessary to connect to just about anybody but Sprint's network. Don't always believe what the companies tell ya.

See that's where your terms and confusion of prepaid comes into play. Of course Family Mobile worked they don't have restrictions on LTE especially since Family Mobile is powered by T-mobile. Straight Talk which is the company I was referring to and the company you were referring to does has limitations on LTE phones, and will NOT allow any LTE phone to to brought to their service. This has to do with they license the use of multiple carriers towers.
Trust me I am not trying to be rude, but I honestly deal with this on a daily basis. You know how many Straight Talk bring your own phone kits I have had to refund because customers buy them for their nice Verizon LTE smartphones? It doesn't work. I am telling you from my experience and my countless hours on the phone with Straight Talk reps and on their website, what their policy is on LTE phones. I beg you to go to Walmart and look at the Straight Talk CDMA/GSM BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) kits that they sell for $60. In the middle of that package on the front it says something along the lines of "LTE Phones are not Compatible." Which like it reads means you cannot bring over a LTE phone to Straight Talk.
AT&T prepaid I would venture to guess would work, but I can't remember if AT&T is as picky as Verizon is about what smartphones get put on their prepaid plans. You would have to call and find out.
So once again, please keep in mind that every prepaid carrier is different, use different towers, and different policies. Just because it worked on one does not mean a different company has policies that differ or block that same practice.
I didn't realize StraightTalk and FamilyMobile were different. I just assumed that when I went to Walmart it was whatever they were using. I see now that StraightTalk is AT&T and FamilyMobile is T-Mobile. I only had the option for FamilyMobile at my Walmart. Thanks for the clarification.
I'm not going to disagree, but I will say that the FamilyMobile website also said my specific phone was not eligible, but it did in fact work. So to anyone else reading this, YMMV. Considering Walmart takes the card back for a full refund, I don't see a problem in at least attempting it (except that employees such as yourself have to deal with it ). It makes sense to me that there's no way for the carrier to enforce specific phones when they are SIM card based. So long as your phone has the radios that carrier operates on, it should work. My guess is that the LTE phones statement on the package is in reference to the fact that you won't get LTE speeds with that network.

Being an an LTE device wouldn't matter in this case since the LTE radio will only work on the CDMA side of the phone and with Verizon's LTE. It has UMTS and Straight Talk already confirmed with me the phone would get 3G while on their network. There's not a magic way of them detecting an LTE phone ( one that works on a CDMA carrier mind you) and flipping the off switch. The 2G and 3G networks are available for AT&T and T-Mobile regardless of which prepaid carrier you use.

Im not going to argue about it. When you go to activate a BYOP on Straight Talk you have to input the IMEI, which does tell Straight Talk if the phone is LTE capable or not and if it isn't eligible it will not allow you to activate the phone. Period. I hate done it and tried it. It isn't like ATT where you put in the SIM card and it is activated. You activate the phone IMEI and SIM card # with Straight Talk. That is how it works with BYOP.
@Impala Im glad you had luck getting Family Mobile working.
Uh, I'm currently using Straight Talk on my DNA with full HSPA+ capability, as are many others.

Exactly, ours is an LTE device so please tell us why it certainly does work on Straight Talk when you claim it doesn't.

Also, Straight Talk just got support for AT&T LTE. So they're going to have to accept LTE devices?

Yeah I just read up on that. I wonder if the DNA 700mhz band will work. I checked online and it shows AT&T as using the 700 bands as well (a,b,c) I'm assuming the new Sim they are selling enables the LTE?
Can anyone with the new Sim confirm LTE connectivity?
EDIT : looks like at&t is band 17 and Verizon is 13. The FCC is pushing for interoperability within the upper 700 but it looks as if the chipset controls which band LTE operates off of...damn. It would be sweet to get LTE on an unlimited prepaid plan.
Interesting. I wonder if GoPhone or anyone else that's AT&T related would work LTE wise?
So are you guys able to use gsm networks with the 2.06 firmware?
I'm using net10 (att) with my DNA with 2.04 firmware and I'm hesitant to update to 2.06 until I can confirm that the 2.06 update keeps gsm completely unlocked?

Me too. Straight Talk claims LTE works for unlocked AT&T smartphones.
Hey everyone, I'm totally new to Straight Talk and GSM and the DNA being used somewhere besides Verizon. (I'm a long time VZ customer but read Android Police daily and am familiar with all things Android.) Anyways, I'm pretty clear on using the phone on Straight Talk, getting MMS and all that, my only question is, how do you go about getting OTA's? Since the phone technically is a Verizon phone, updates would come from them. While on Straight Talk can I throw a Verizon sim card in the phone, download the OTA. Then after completing the update, put back in my AT&T sim card. Or does HTC offer OTA downloads online?
How do you guys go about updating your phone? (OTA's obviously apply to non-rooted devices. I may or may not root it.)
Thanks for your help!

Thanks ac! That sounds like something I could do. I'm not too familiar with s-off, moonshine or HTC (the phone is my wife's. I'm a nexus guy) but I may have to look into that. Anybody else out there with any ideas?
