Getting back to Stock ? - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Hi all,
I want to apologize now if this is in the wrong section, I am very new to this forum. I recently want to install Cyanogenmod onto my HTC One M8, I got that to work. I created a backup on TWRP before installing cyanogen and I ended up not enjoying cyanogenmod. I restored my backup and I still have Superuser installed. I don't think it installed correctly to begin with because I get the error "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!" I tried to uninstall the app by going into to root explorer and deleting it from there. Once I do that, I get the error "Superuser.apk cannot be deleted because the file system is read-only." I also went on root checker, and confirmed my phone isn't rooted. This is the toolkit I used to "root":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065
Now I just want to get my phone back to original stock, just like it was before I did anything. I am also clueless on what S-OFF and S-ON are.
BTW: I also could relock the bootloader with the same tool linked above, I don't know if that could help or not.
Thank you

Do you have the AT&T version of the M8?
Were you on Lollipop when you unlocked the bootloader and tried to root?
Notice the toolkit has not been updated in over a year, and you can bet there are going to be problems (especially if you were on Lollipop).
I suggest staying away from this and other toolkits. The steps are easy to perform "manually" using fastboot, etc. Plus, the toolkit being outdated is going to cause you major headaches.
Answer the questions I posed above, and we can go from there.

Its not completely clear what you've done to cause SuperSU to show up on the stock ROM. You've either:
1) Restored your stock Sense ROM while keeping app data (from CM12), which is not recommended, or
2) You tried to root before you made the stock Sense TWRP backup.
If #1 above, try either factory reset; or restore TWRP backup making sure to restore system, boot.img, and data (assuming all those were originally backed up).
If #2, the toolkit tried to root using a very old version of SuperSU that is known to not work on Lollipop (need around SuperSU 2.44 or newer). In which case, you were probably never actually rooted to begin with (note that root is not needed to flash custom ROMs).
If the intent is to be on the stock ROM, but have root: Make sure you have current version TWRP. Fastboot flash the latest TWRP version 2.8.7 from here: https://dl.twrp.me/m8/
Then download the current version SuperSU 2.46 from the following link. Boot into TWRP, and install the SuperSU 2.46 zip: https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU
Alternately, if you really want to return to full stock (no root, get rid of SuperSU completely), you can relock the bootloader (not required if s-off) than run the 4.28 AT&T RUU. But note, the RUU will wipe the phone (including internal storage).

I can lock the bootloader from the same toolkit? Or is that a bad idea? If its possible then, how do I run the 4.28 ATT RUU? I don't mind it being wiped. I installed TWRP, then installed supersu, made backup, installed cyanogen, then restored using TWRP.

Sorry, I was on work travel last week and not able to visit XDA.

I would personally recommend stopping the use of the toolkit for anything. What part of my previous post is not clear?

Relocking the bootloader is a single fastboot command, and you don't need a toolkit for that: fastboot oem lock
If you don't know how issue fastboot commands, time to read and learn. And knowledge is a far more useful "tool" than any toolkit program you can fine.

The RUU is mostly automated and self-explanatory. Just connect the phone to PC (Windows 7 or 8.1 recommended, Win8 and especially 10 are known to cause issues) and run the RUU executable (after you download it, obviously) and it will launch and guide you through the rest.

You were never properly rooted to begin with, due to outdated version SuperSU. You can probably just flash SuperSU 2.46 to properly root. You can RUU to "full stock" if you want to be sure. But I'm pretty sure just flashing the correct version SuperSU will fix your "root" issue.

Do I just flash the new version of SuperSU or do I have the find a way to uninstall the previous verison and then reinstall SuperSU?

Just install the new SuperSU. It will overwrite the old apk app as needed.

[Q] Help with rumrunner

Ok since I have less than 10 posts I can not post in the area that I would have liked to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559232
I am having the same Issue as badfishie in that I am stuck on the:
Under Test 2:
Rebooting into bootloader (again)
Waiting for fastboot (6/120)
FATAL: Download updated package at www.rumrunner.us
After I Downloaded it again a second time, and the DNA version. Yes I tried the first version first, and investigated it.
I have followed GrzlyAdms advice and factory reset my device numerous times.
I even gone so far as to Return my device to factory Sence 5.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2570548
My bootloader still shows S-OFF from the moonshine that I was successful at applying.
But after the OTA with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper not able to keep root...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241517
I am once again trying to gain root access for my device.
I have:
Made sure usb debugging was on
Made sure verifying apps was off
Made sure fastboot was off
Made sure no lock screen was selected
Made sure to use a USB 2.0 port, and Original USB cord
Made sure adb can see my device
Run soju as Administrator
Drivers installed with Tool kit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219175
AV and firewall disabled
Using Windows 7 x64 and Minimal ADB and Fastboot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790
Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!
Mind if I ask why are you trying to unlocked you bootloader and soff or your already soff?
Ok, I'll try to help best I can. Hopefully one of the more experienced folks can chime in too as they'll probably be way more helpful. I've got a couple guesses, but need to know a bit more. Please know that I'm only providing my best guesses as I haven't run into this problem.
What firmware version were you on when you tried rumrunner? It sounds like you already had an unlocked bootloader and s-off... through moonshine. Did you end up with a locked bootloader? If so, how? You mentioned that you went back to sense 5. What method? Did you ruu back to a stock rom or just flash one of the Custom/stock ROMs.
Here is one possible option. I would suggest reading through the thread thoroughly before diving in...
- Go back to 100% stock with locked bootloader and s-on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293919
Then make sure you've taken any OTA updated to get to 3.06.605.4 and you should be able to use rumrunner.

The reason the thing is failing is because he already has a unlocked bootloader with soff. I don't know why he is trying to unlock something that is already unlocked. All he needs to do is download something like superuser or flash a custom rom with root built into it.

10-4. That's kinda what I thought too, but figured I'd try to confirm by asking a few questions. I have seen a few people get stuck with s-off but a locked bootloader if they goof up the process trying to go back to 100% stock. Thought I'd ask the questions just in case this is what he did.
Ok, I would like to keep the Stock Android, but would like to have root access.
I an unsure how to gain root access with out turning S-ON.
I could follow that and turn S-ON again,
But if you have another method of gaining ROOT with out flashing a custom ROM,
I would be grateful for your assistance.
Sorry for any confusion on that,
I spent 10hrs trying to figure this out yesterday,
it was necessary to put down and look at another day.
I have tried downloading superuser and supersu from the play store, neither give me access to root
However I have looked on your forums since you suggested simply flashing another rom already with root access - Thanks for that btw
this post shows the full version, but has odex and deodex, well deodex is pulled, may i ask what the difference is?

I will flash the odex one now and see what happens, thanks again I needed a fresh look at this I guess.

You must already have a superuser app to install one from the play store. Flash a superuser zip from recovery. That will put both the app and the required binaries in place.
Yo this is a random question if I go back to stock 2.06 soff and rooted will rumrunner update me or what?

From what I have learned so far, running rumrunner when you are already S-OFF will net you a FAILED message. if your DNA is already S-OFF then feel free to flash whatever ROM you want.. well sorta, make sure it's for the DNA, and flash at your own risk.
I took the OTA after achieving S-OFF with moonshine and it removed my root access... now I am in this boat where I want to regain root.
I have finally finished downloading the zip from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560010
But I have no idea how to flash it, step by step instructions would be helpful since this is my first flash and I have yet to figure it out. I have tried fastboot flash zip but that didn't work, and I am unfamilar with this....
The FAQ here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188944
is of no help unfortunately....
I found some Instructions that tell you to boot into recovery, but when I try to boot into recovery all I get is a RED ! and Triangle above a screen. like something went wrong :/
Start by downloading ROM and the patch and copy the file to the SD card’s root in your device.
Reboot your phone into recovery mode. For this, power off your device and restart it keeping the volume down key pressed. Your phone will be booted into bootloader fastboot mode.
In the Recovery mode, use the ‘Power ’key to select and to navigate use the ‘Volume’ keys.
Use ‘backup and restore’ option to create a backup.
Now perform three steps in a row: first wipe data//factory reset, then wipe cache and lastly wipe dalvik cache accessing the advanced menu.
Now install zip from your sdcard, then select ROMs zip file you copied to your phone and choose zip.
Redo it for Patch file once you are done with ROM installation.
At the end, reboot your phone.
Lovely I didn't have a recovery installed, using the tools: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219175
I installed the TWRP 2.5.0.0 recovery,
THEN I was able to enter recovery and flash the ROM.
WOW what a experience, this has been.

if you want to revert to stock, since i didn't flash the second till i flashed the first, i would suggest that you do that, if you want to go with another custom rom, follow it's instructions, if it asks for a specific starting point, aka stock 4.2.2 then flash the first one then flash the custom one.

[Q] Need KitKat on my unlocked AT&T HTC One

Hi All,
I bought this refurbished AT&T unlocked HTC One from eBay. I am with T Mobile.
I already unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone. Why I did this:
1) I wanted to remove all the AT&T stuff including their update check which doesn't work with T Mobile SIM. (But not able to do it even after uninstalling with Titanium, those just come back on restart)
2) I wanted KitKat (either like an unlocked or international HTC one or the Google Play KitKat)
But I am not sure how to proceed.
I already have downloaded a ROM from this link: htconeroot.com/htc-one-stock-roms/android-4-4-kitkat-sense-5-5-stock-rom-for-htc-one
But not sure about S-OFF/ON etc because I am a newbie, this is my second android phone and first rooting.
Can anyone give me step by step instructions to install either a google play kitkat or a pure sense 5.5 kitkat? I would prefer if I can do this just once now and get future updates automatically from google/htc.
Mine is Android 4.3 based Sense 5.0 with all the AT&T stuff. I am in the US.
There is no real difference between AT&T Kitkat and Jellybean on the One. In fact there are a few bugs with Kitkat. Such as the camera and a few others that have been posted.

I'd say switch to the Developer Edition rom, it doesn't contain all of the AT&T bloat.
1. Unlock the bootloader here.
2. S-Off via rummrunner or firewater.
3. Change CID to BS_US001 'fastboot oem writecid BS_US001'
4. Install Developer Edition 4.3 RUU, get it here.
5. Take OTA to 4.4.2.
There are guides in the One General and Q&A sections that cover all of this. Do a lot of reading, and then ask questions as needed.
Thanks. Any more Info?

The RUU is easy, it is a complete software package for the phone that will restore it to the original software of the Developer Edition phones.
For the RUU to work, the CID (carrier id) must be set to BS_US001. This why you'll need to s-off the phone, so that you can change the CID.
Go to http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads and select 'Brightstar US' as the carrier, then 'Find Files' and download the 'RUU 3.22.1540.1 Developer Edition'. It is an EXE, just run it with the phone connected to the USB port of the computer and it will walk you through the install. After it reboots you will have developer edition 4.3, then update to 4.4.2 by OTA, just check in the Software Update menu in settings on the phone. It will download a file to the phone that will update it.
rumrunner didn't work

Thank you again. I installed 4.3 RUU and OTAed to KitKat.
Very much satisfied and happy with it.
Some questions:
My root and custom kernel are gone. Even the TWRP recovery is lost.
Do I need to flash TWRP as recovery again? And install SU and 4.4 ElementalX again for root and getting the kernel? If yes and if I do these, will my future OTAs be blocked?

Flash it using fastboot just like you would flash TWRP. The stock recovery can be pulled out of a firmware.zip.
Could not find the recovery image

I got the notification for 4.19.1540.9 update. I was about to go back to the stock recovery to update this.
But could not unzip the recovery image from the RUU zip
(PN07IMG_M7_UL_JB43_SENSE50_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_3.22.1540.1.zip). It was not unzippable and even after repairing it with zip_repair tool I could not get the recovery image.
Also I downloaded recovery_1.29.1540.16_R.img from another xda post. That didn't work. After giving start update, it was stuck at a red triangle with a warning sign.

I think both of those recoveries are too old, you need the one for your currently installed kitkat version.
Any idea where can I get it?

I can't find the 4.19.1540.x version but I believe any 4.19.x.x version will work.
I think the stock recovery may be in this dark bootloader firmware download .
http://www.htc1guru.com/downloads/firmware-downloads/
Get the 4.19.401.8 download and see if the recovery.img is included.
Best I can come up with for now.
No. That doesn't have it

[Q] Updating Old Android Version On Rooted Phone

Hi,
A long long time ago I rooted my thunderbolt, using the revolutionary method. Right now my android version is 2.3.4 and I would like to update it to the latest version while still remaining rooted.
Is it possible to easily do this with my current setup? I have Revolutionary CWM 4.0.1.4 on my phone.
Not sure the proper order of operations to update android versions while still maintaining root status.
Thanks!

Revolutionary is a bootloader... And keeps you locked into s-off... Your rooted status on any rom you install will depend on the rom and your super user binary... But recovering root is as simple as flashing a superuser binary if it is lost, so long as you don't remove your revolutionary bootloader (designed to be difficult to remove, can't be overwritten easily or accidentally, no worries) I highly recommend switching to 4ext recovery, especially for 4.0.4 ROMs... But, your device, your choice.

Sorry, but I am still confused on some things.
Switching to 4ext recovery -- What does this mean?
Also would the most popular 4.x.x ROMs work for my thunderbolt?
And final question: Would this completely wipe all of my personal data + apps or simply just upgrade my phone's android OS?
Thanks!

http://4ext.net
Most, yes, so long as you use an up to date recovery .IMG
In order to correctly install a new ROM, you must wipe /data, /system, cache, and dalvik cache in recovery prior to install... If you're already rooted and s-off, you can create a nandroid backup with your recovery. Search for that phrase if you don't understand what that is... Hope that helps.

[Q] HTC Desire 610 BusyBox Problems - Newbie at Rooting

Whenever I try to install "BusyBox", I can't... My phone either fails to install, or reboots. Also, whenever I try to use "Network Spoofer", a message appears saying the I have BusyBox installed, but it doesn't have the required component '?'. I just used "BusyBox on Rails" and then recovery, but it says "Missing Applets"? How can I fix this?
On this phone, even with root and an unlocked bootloader, there is still HTC's s-on. Until someone manages to get s-off, BusyBox can't be installed. I ran into the same problem.
EDIT:
I just flashed this kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-610/orig-development/kernel-jmz-a3ul-kernel-v1-t2847983
It allowed me to install BusyBox properly. Go nuts.
The above information is halfway incorrect. The phone has system write protection, s-on has nothing to do with it. Also, I made a rom yesterday from the new 1.50 OTA update. Included busybox and root. Working on wp_mod to disable the write protection now, before releasing it. The kernel above is based on the previous 1.30 version's kernel, and I was having major issues with freezing with it installed. Just use caution and always make backups in twrp before modding.
Link???

Can you put a link for this anywhere?
It will be posted as soon as it's finished. Planning on making a full ClearDroid rom for this device.
Thank you! But just another quick question...

Thank you for telling me this! So just to be clear, the other Kernel isn't completely safe for an HTC Desire 610?
Yes, it is safe, it's just for an older version of the Rom. If you've taken the OTA update to 1.50, you may have issues with it.
Thank you ClearD!
Waiting for your kernel, but I have question: could you tell me where is the kernel version number on the 610 please? I see only 3.4.0-g0169dc2 or the build number 1.31.401.2
I have Tampered, unlocked and S-off rooted with TWRP
Thank you

[Q] Installed CM12, no SIM error, S-OFF without Firewater or return to stock?

Hi,
I have just gotten an HTC One M8 (ATT) and decided to root & install CM 12 (this isn't my first rodeo).
I did not worry about gaining S-OFF because from what I had read, it wasn't entirely necessary.
After running CM12, I got the no SIM card error that I've seen others with on the forums. I would like to obtain S-OFF to run the MaximusHD Lollipop ROM which supposedly has issues if you aren't S-OFF.
However, due to the fact that firewater has been officially discontinued, 90% of tutorials are invalid.
The ones that aren't say to use sunshine (I think that's it), but running that gives me an error - something about how I need to have a non-debuggable ROM.
I also would like S-OFF so I could restore the stock ROM through a relock and RUU. I tried to just flash the stock ROM through TWRP but that did not work - ended up in a recovery boot loop.
So, could anyone assist me with these issues?
What shall I do to make sunshine function?
Is there a way for me to flash the stock ROM without having to change anything?
Is there a solution to the SIM error presented by CM12?
Thanks in advance,
GRSteelers

I have a solution for you, but this is just what I would do.
1st. You need to download titanium backup. Backup everything you need because we will be wiping the phone. Make a nandroid backup too just to be safe. BACK UP TO THE SD CARD, NOT INTERNAL STORAGE.
2. Now we need to download the correct RUU file for your device. Head on over to this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432 download the (5.0.2) RUU using the link provided
3.Now before you use the RUU we need to have a LOCKED Bootloader. So plug up your device and boot into fastboot, use the command fastboot OEM lock to lock your bootloader
4. Run the RUU. Follow instructions to return to stock.
5.Re root the device by unlocking the boot loader, flashing custom recovery, and installing SuperSU. (If you need instructions a quick search will suffice)
6. Download Sunshine S-OFF and (begrudgingly) pay the $25 to have S-OFF on your M8
7.Flash the MaximusHD Lollipop ROM and any other flashable zips you need
8.Download titanium backup and restore the apps and app data you need from the backup we did earlier, (note that TB Pro can restore from the Nandroid Backup as well) and your all set!

I would also like to note once you are S-OFF if you really want Cyanogenmod 12, I believe a solution to your (no-sim) problem has been posted in THIS forum. This can only be accomplished once you are S-OFF. Let me know of any more problems, I would be glad to advise you just PM me
