First off, I am sorry if this is the wrong section, but I figure anything can go in 'general'.
My phone is an LG g4 running h81110n and I am wondering if the exploits in this software version can be patched by LG without releasing an entirely new software update (whatever is the successor to 10n), or any manufacturer for instance, like Samsung or Sony? Will a root method made for a certain software version always work on a phone running that software version? I suppose this question is more about Android software versions in general than LG. It goes without saying I do not fully understand what exactly a software version is.
Also I have one other question about bricking. I tried installing a rooted 10h image using the "low effort" method provided by thecubed in july and it soft bricked my phone. I followed the instructions exactly so I assume it happened because I used a 10h image on my 10n phone (I fixed it by flashing a stock image back onto it). What I am wondering is if it is possible to hard brick my phone or brick it irreversibly using a method like this, even if I do everything correctly?
I am planning on trying again tonight with a rooted 10n image. I will give updates if you guys want them.

But I want the exact same sprint image thats on there... is this possible? Can't I get the recovery image off the phone? I'd rather not use an image off the interwebs..but a sprint image of sorts. Is this doable? Thanks!
Yes go to settings and then "About phone" and tell us exactly the versions. (Kernel etc...).
Then I will tell you if you need to downgrade or just root it
Firmware: 1.5
Kernel: 2.6.27
Build Number: 1.56.651.2
Software Ver: 1.56.651.2
Hardware Ver: 0002
I want to root it but am nervous. I don't want to jack up my phone. I'd like to root it, and then goto some sort of recovery console like I've seen and take a default basic image of my phone. Can I do this?
What if you Update your phone and then root it ?
Because your version is old and when you update you will be able to see much improvment.
Don't be nervous when rooting it, its nearly impossible that you can brick it.
Are you on Europe ?
I'm in US (Michigan) CDMA network. How do I update it? I've already downloaded the latest sprint firmware that was just released. What other updates are you referring to? If you mean 1.6, I thought they were skipping 1.6 and waiting for 2.0 as far as HTC was concerned?
No I was meant updates from the original HTC website but I don't know about your phone. Have you installed this firmware that you downloaded ?
Yes its already been installed a week ago.
Weird...
Just go to the CDMA Hero subforum and check what you can do. I don't know about your model
If you are worried about messing up your phone, I would recommend you be at ease. It's pretty damn difficult to brick your phone as long as you stick to the instructions.
I'm assuming you want to stick with the original Sprint rom simply because you want to remove stock apps... otherwise, you'd be sorely mistaken to think you can add themes and other third party rom features to your phone (such as installing apps to your sd card).
The phone can always be reverted back to bone stock with a rom updating utility install file that sprint has made available to their users.
Why exactly, may I ask, do you want to root the phone whilst keeping the phone completely stock?
Please don't be angry. I am severely confused over this whole update thing. With the bootloader, and the leaked rom, and the official ota rom.....good lord it's like my mind is trying to hump a doorknob.
Anyway... I have 2.2.2, rooted (although by which method, I cannot remember). I do not have any mods. I have side-loading enabled. I have tethering enabled.
What is the safest way, in plain english, to update to the newest version? I don't know what SBF means, I don't know what CWM means, I don't know what RSD means.
All I want as an end result is a rooted version of the latest, OTA update with an unlocked bootloader.
Please help the ignorant
Edit: I guess I should tell you that I'm in the US on an ATT atrix.
You may want to confirm with someone with more experience, but this worked for me (rooted 1.8.3, OTA 2.5.91), I'm too damn new to even post the link ... pm me I guess hah

if you do the over the air update you will not have an unlocked bootloader unless you do it before there are custom roms that are just as good and stable as the official ones that will root unlock your bootloader and upgrade if you want to do all of this follow my guide here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179506
Just to enlighten things a bit...
a SBF (i believe it stands for system binary file?) is a file that contains an official (made by the manufacturer) ROM for a cellphone. The entire operating system and kernel.
RSD (a.k.a. RSDlite) is a software designed by motorola, to use on your computer to install these SBFs on a cellphone via USB connection.
CWM is a piece of software for your phone that is accessible during boot, before the OS loads.
- After installed, to use it, you have to turn on the phone holding both the power button and the volume down buttons. The phone screen will show "fastboot". That's only one option in a series of options that you can scroll through using the "volume down" button, and that you select using the "volume up" button. Scrolling down, you'll find the option "Android Recovery", which will access whatever CWM you put in place.
- It's function is to allow the installation of ROMs and Kernels. Its basically a simpler alternative to RSD, requiring no pc to function.
And to update your device, first you must install RSDlite on your computer, and install the Pudding SBF on your phone using it. After that, You have to install Tenfar's CWM on your phone. Then you'll choose one of the avaiable ROMs (there's the stock one posted up by kennethpenn, a version of the stock one with a few upgrades, and several customized ones), which you will install using CWM.
The detailed steps are on the NOOB GUIDES fixed post on one of the Atrix's foruns, but I beleive those explanations shall make that road a little less bumpier.
Simple answer
Hi I'd just like to add my 2 cents from the update experience.
If you are rooted prior to the update, installing the official update of gingerbread from Motorola will make you lose root privileges-plain and simple.
In my case unlike you I did not have sideloading enabled. That was the only difference in your situation and mine. So that's a question for a Senior member to answer.
If I were you, I'd just go ahead and update regardless. This forum has a lot of information in resurrection of the bricked phones in the 1% chance that it may happen. 99% you will update to the gingerbready awesomeness.
Another piece of advice is that after exploring a lot of features of the stock rom, i felt that the launcher is the Achilles heel of motoblur or blur UI as they call it now. Try using adw launcher?. It's fast and fantastic. Completely customizable.
This ends my 0.02$.
The way to get unconfused is through education. Find a couple of hours and a pen/paper.
Read the wiki here.
Watch the videos here.
Take notes and follow up in the threads, if you have questions.
kind of a noob myself, but find everything pretty simple. This is an awesome ROM with what you are looking for.

So I need an SD card ey? Hmm. Ok, well, thanks for the info.
I thought we had a wiki somewhere. Oh wait! We DO!
I have a very similar problem on the lines of i have no idea what the hell is going on and what ppl are saying...!!
But what a bigger problem is is that i have a Orange UK version phone, tho i dont use Orange network... and apparently everything is for ATT phones... so im not sure if any of these things are even compatible with my phone...!?! im running froyo 2.2.2 and want to somehow get onto 2.3.4 but just dont know how...?!?!?!
I have a firmware question that I can't seem to find the answer to by searching. I ask running arhd 11 on an att HTC one. Should I upgrade the firmware on my phone? Will there be any benefits to this since I am on att and not international? Also how do I go about updating the firmware and does it wipe the device? Longtime Samsung user so please excuse the noobness.
I would hold off with updating firmware as there are issues with some ROM's and recoveries and the touchpad drivers in the latest firmware. A firmware install doesn't wipe the device.
I just updated mine to 2.24 last night. A few issues at first (mainly with TWRP and recoveries after flashing), but found a great guide that made it all easy.
I don't know if I'd do it again. Now that I'm finished, I don't have any issues at all but I suppose if its not broke don't fix it. I worried I bricked my phone last night when I did something wrong, but ultimately I figured it out with lots and lots of reading. I don't really notice anything different, but, if you're like me and have to have the latest and greatest, it can be a hard itch to scratch. You'd also want to upgrade to ARHD 12, since it would match the firmware version you're going to be upgrading to. IIRC 11 isn't based on the 2.24 fw.
If you want to do it, use vomer's guide here. Follow it to a T, including the TWRP download. You HAVE To download the TWRP from his link. The one from the official page loses touch with the new firmware (one of the issues that took me an hour to figure out). You'll also have to be S-Off, which is going to open a whole new can of potential issues, so be aware what that means and what you have to be careful of.
I did the same as @Eradik using the same methods. Like he said, follow them exactly (not hard to do) and use vomers twrp recovery (as the touch drivers are fixed in it).
The main difference I noticed was much better capacitive button response and when coupled with arhd 12 a very response experience. Other than that I'm not sure if there really are any noticsble benefits but it really isn't difficult to do at all and you don't lose anything with vomers method.

*Okay, before I explain what is going on with my phone I just want to say I am good with phones and understand them I just have trouble sometimes with them, which everybody does, but everything I know I learned on my own.*
* PHONE DETAILS- LG OPTIMUS Q LGL55C, ANDROID VERSION 2.3.4*
*Before we start, my port on my phone where the charger goes into is completely fried,(We will not get into that discussion... Lol), So no USB work.*
I have a LG Optimus Q lgl55c. I know a lot about root, and as you can assume since I said that, my phone is rooted. I successfully rooted my phone, that was no problem, but I started to look into more about what the phone is actually capable of. I looked into it and did some research. What I found out is I can go deeper with my phone and have a better user friendly experience with it. ROM's!!!! We all know and love them, but what I actually learned about is unlocking the bootloader. I know this is a long thread but I am sure one of you tech geeks can help me. Well as you read above my USB port is not functioning so I can not unlock the bootloader from a PC. Also the reason why I am bringing this up before I get into the main subject is because I have no idea if this has anything to do with my biggest problem. I have no clue what version my bootloader is right now, so I do not want to use the ez-unlock app which only supports certain versions of bootloader( I do not want to brick my device ). My first topic question- "Is there any way to unlock my bootloader without a PC and have a slighter chance of getting bricked?"
On forth to the main problem!!!!!
ROM's are the best thing in my opinion on mobile phones. I did some research and learned about flashing ROM's to change the OS and also flashing custom recoveries such as ClockWorkMod. What I did, since I can not use USB, was I researched some ways to install or, more commonly know as, flash ClockWorkMod onto my phone. The most common way I found was to install ROM Manager from the Google Play Store and flash it onto your device from there. I did all of that correctly but when I click reboot to recovery or go there manually I always get the stock recovery boot screen. I also tried the rename the files method, but the files that I was suppose to rename was no where to be found. I have tried so many things. I really want to flash ROM's onto my device. So my next question is- "Does this have anything to do with my bootloader being locked?" "Am I doing something wrong?" "Is it possible to do without a PC?" -and last but not least-"Does those missing files have anything to do with it?"
So basically my main problem is-
Is it possible, if yes, am I missing anything I have not done?

I bought a LG V10 today i dont know if its used or new (LOL) any way to find that out i checked IMEI says its orignal talked to people at LG USA they said its Original Here are my questions:
1) How to know if your phone is Legit like New + Lasting?( in my country they replicate used to orignal or fake to orignal)
2) How to Root LG V10? (i tried it with other phones i broke them)
3) Suggest Some Recommended Apps and ROMS?
4)I have seen a youtube video of xdadevelopers they were talking how you can overclock or under clock your device can i do that with my phone?
5)Last Question How can i myself from the infamous Bootloop? (Any Suggestion, Tricks Ways)
I am new here i need your help for not doing a rookie mistake....
1) Get the LG Phone Info app on the Google Play Market and as long as that shows "OK" in the Original info (the first box after you click the Get Information button) then your device is an original and not something that's been modified on a firmware level.
2) If you have Lollipop or Marshmallow rooting is fairly easy by comparison to Nougat. If you have Nougat on it already things are basically a stop - there is no working root for Nougat at this moment IF the device has been upgraded to Nougat using T-Mobile's OTA direct from them. Once that's been installed there's no turning back and no working root at this point but some devs are working on it, no guarantees they'll ever be able to create one.
If the device has Lollipop or Marshmallow on it you can get it rooted. The best course of action is to go from Lollipop to Marshmallow (the last Marshmallow build is 20l and that's an "L" there, lowercase, not 1 or i/I) and then what you'll need to do is get TWRP on it (that step is critical) then you would flash this modified update.zip to get to Nougat build 30b on it. runningak3d modified that update.zip file so it does NOT overwrite the recovery partition and you get to keep TWRP installed for flashing purposes. If you use T-Mobile's official OTA update.zip you'll be stuck, not able to flash anything including TWRP, or get rooted, etc.
So, again, the process is get to Marshmallow 20l, then get TWRP installed - at that point root is not necessary just to get the modified 20b update.zip on it. Then use TWRP to flash that modified 20b update.zip at which point it'll be Nougat, and THEN you can flash SuperSU with TWRP and you end up with a V10 running Nougat and rooted, that's the only method at this point.
runningak3d said he (or she, sorry, I just don't know) would try to create another modified update.zip which is pre-rooted so when installed you've got root/SuperSU ready to go but it's barely a minute to install SuperSU manually after flashing that modified 20b update.zip so it's not really a big issue there.
3) There are no custom ROMs for the V10 at this point, no Lineage, no AOSP, nothing really. There are some modified stock ROMs iirc but nothing that's totally custom and we V10 owners are still hoping some dev will take some time and create an unofficial Lineage build for the V10 based on Nougat (or even Marshmallow, I don't really care which Android version it's based on just that it's Lineage through and through). It seems pretty screwy that nobody seems to care about the V10 enough to have created a custom ROM but that's how it goes sometimes. The V10 is like an LG G4 on steroids in some respects, basically the same hardware overall with some minor differences (the second screen, of course, but I don't even use that on mine so I don't care about it at all).
I just wanted Lineage because it's so lean and efficient compared to any stock ROM and of course the potential for having a custom kernel with more governor support and other aspects is the big draw for me so, the hope remains that someone out there will take some pity on us woeful V10 owners and drop a Lineage build someday.
As for apps, well, that's entirely up to you and what you use your V10 for, and since nobody knows that but you then it'll be up to you to decide what kinds of apps you're going to be looking for.
4) Over-and-underclocking requires a custom kernel that allows for such things, and the stock kernel that's available (I think there was one custom kernel but it's just a modified stock one with limited additional capabilities) simply doesn't allow for such alterations. The V10 is quite fast on its own natively so, I can't imagine why someone would need to overclock it - I can understand WHY someone would WANT to do it, of course, but as for an actual need to do it, nope.
As for underclocking, that would save battery and be what I'd call a need in some respects, but again there just doesn't seem to be any developer out there that gives a damn about the V10 sadly. I wish I had spent more time learning how to create custom ROMs over the years and trick out some kernels as well using the provided source from manufacturers of these smartphones but I never did.
5) There is no way to prevent the potential bootloop issue which affects the G3/G4/G5/G6 (I saw one report so it could be bogus for the G6) and also the V10/V20 (seen two reports for the V20) and the Nexus 5x because it's a hardware manufacturing defect related to how the Snapdragon SoCs are mounted on the motherboards. There's nothing that you can do about it and there's no way to know for sure if the V10 you have will develop problems because of it or not, all you can do is use it and be done with it and hope for the best. Again, there is no fix and there's no way to know or prevent it from happening so, no matter what so called "fix" you read about or see a video about, it's all BS and best avoided.
My recommendation: since you just got the V10, go to LG's website and register the V10 in your name (might have to create an account) and then say you bought it in March, April, or May of 2017 (just a few months ago) and that will give you warranty protection through at least mid-2018. If you do that and it does bootloop on you, LG will replace it through the warranty period. Don't register it and you're out of luck if it does bootloop on you.
Hope this helps...
