Updating via OTA or flashing stable updates - Xiaomi Poco F1 Questions & Answers

I have unlocked, disabled encryption and rooted Pocophone using Magisk , then flashed a custom kernel.
If a new update comes in for Pocophone, I know that I cannot directly go flash the OTA update because it will cause bootloop or brick my device. What to do before updating from previous to latest with custom kernel and root? (e.g. MIUI 9 > MIUI 10)

If rooted and with TWRP, I would never recommend flashing via updater app.
I suggest you follow these steps to update the same way I did. I did this from 10.0.6 (oreo) to 10.1.3 (android pie)
1. DOWNLOAD THE ROM (either via updater or from xiaomi.eu, but if using updater, click install later, just let the zip download.
2. disable all MAGISK MODULES
3. reboot to recovery and flash the latest ROM
4. wipe cache and dalvik
5. FLASH latest FED from this post
6. Flash latest Magisk. Reboot
Again, make sure to follow these steps exactly so as not to mess anything up. Careful and

About to try it.. I have to download the stock rom firmware before trying the ota update.. Here's the link https://forum.xda-developers.com/po...orangefox-recovery-project-beta-t3853233/amp/
I flashed the custom recovery and no problem at all.. But still haven't to try ota update via the Orangefox. I will update you later if it was a success..

Flashed ota failed. It showed an error in the middle of the flashing. I didn't took a screenshot because it instantly reboot the system then continuous bootloop happend... I don't know why but I'm going to make sure what was going on.
I disabled the force encryption, enabled ota survival, etc. damn..
I will try the stable since the beta failed. Just wait for hours for the update. Sorry guys..

Omg yes! It was Error 7.. If stable rom shows same results. Time to plan B.
Plan B is to try another custom recovery that supports ota updates, ota survival, and disables the force encryption to the data partition.

P.S: you wont get "assert" command in the updater script, but u can erase "get prop" command and try this.
You will find the update zip file in "Downloaded_rom" folder in internal storage

Nexus 6p DP2 OTA captured

A reddit user captured his link to the DP

Flash guide: *should* work
1. Boot twrp on DP1
2. flash SU of choice
3. reboot
4. install FlashFire from play store
5. Select "Flash firmware package"
6. Select the zip
7. Flash it!
**** A FEW DISCLAIMERS
**** TWRP seems to be based on 6.0.1 and the OTA can only be flashed on 7.1.1
**** In this case twrp will NOT flash this OTA file
**** FlashFire IS REQUIRED
**** I am not google. Yes I am sorry that force encrypt wiped your data or you got stuck in
**** a boot loop because you flashed it incorrectly BUT I am NOT google, I am NOT even
**** the person who captured the link for the ota ALL I DID WAS SHARE IT
**** If your data partition got wiped, you got stuck in a boot loop, or the guide didn't work
**** chances are you did something wrong
**** if you would like support but Google up in the DMs
**** I am happy to help just know I won't troubleshoot what you screwed up
Would we get a full OTA as well?

If you're rooted, use flash fire from play. It restores twrp and root after updating. Haven't used any other method. No problems. Best app ever.
Just updated. Sound louder, November security patch and overall smoother scrolling.
No regrets getting the 6P. Amazing phone.?
It work fined at my Nexus 6p. All the rooted apps working fine. Thank you very much for your sharing. Appreciated it.
Just curius, has anyone of you guys unencrypted?
I installed it with flashfire but I'm still at DP1... Am I doing something wrong?
I installed it as flash zip or ota but nothing still got the message to update.
Is it because I have installed custom kernel?
Can't flash it in TWRP --> error
edit: I got E3001: the build fingerprint doesn't match. How can I fix this?
I succesfully flashed using Flashfire.
First thing I noticed is the many (repeating) superuser notifications I get for apps getting root during boot.

the same for me... I only have twrp and have modified system... maybe is because of that... but I tought that would not be a problem... guess I'm going the twrp way
hmm, now I get it... this is not a full ota file.
Will I be able to flash it via TWRP like I did with the full OTA file from DP1 ??
^You need the full ota not this type of ota...
So this is the update from DP1 to DP2, correct? Is there any other way to install it besides with Flashfire? I've always installed from my PC, so is there any way to sideload it or install the zip through TWRP?

Here's what I did:
1. Downloaded the OTA (137 MB) on pc.
2. Copied it to phone.
3. Selected Flash OTA in flashfire and selected the zip.
4. Flashfire failed to do it.
Should I use flash firmware option instead of flash OTA?
Also there are further options to select like recovery etc. What about them?

noob question

Guys please help me.. I have a query.
I just unlocked bootloader and want to follow the following procedure, please tell me if I'm doing anything wrong
Flash twrp using fastboot command
Flash lazy flasher using twrp
Flash magisk(for root purpose) using twrp
Reflash stock recovery img using fastboot command
If i follow the above procedure will there be any problem and also will I be able to install system updates using updater app??
why do u even want to reflash ur stock recovery TWRP is much better stay onit.!!! and first flash magisk and then lazy flasher and everything will be fine
The only reason I want to flash stock recovery is OTA updates..
Don't worry about OTA u can always manually download the update and flash it using TWRP

You cannot flash dolby using stock recovery bro.. first you have to flash TWRP recovery. The fastboot command loads whatever recovery your phone contains. It will not flash TWRP

Way to keep OTA update while root?

Found the link that explain the way: https://forum.xda-developers.com/red...overy-t3718203
So, in my understanding, fastboot twrp, use it to install magisk to root it.
It will remain the stock recovery and also ota update as fastboot does not flash the TWRP. Seems to be a good news to me.
If I need to install ARISE Sound System, I need to use the same way to do it too? Anyone has tried it before?

The answer is in the link here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/po...der-custom-t3839405/post77773929#post77773929
TheHappyBuddhist quoted that "You can download the full rom from MIUI website and flash it via TWRP. You can flash an update over existing software via TWRP and no need to reinstall anything. But if you are taking an ota update (not via TWRP), then you will have to start from the scratch. FED is to be run everytime you make an update as stock MIUI will encrypt the phone otherwise. If you want your phone to be encrypted, then don't flash it - your phone will encrypt itself before rebooting. The newest FED in OP contains the newest Magisk too."
So I give up the thinking of OTA update while TWRP is available. I will go through install TWRP, then force encryption disabler and magisk. Whenever there is new update, will update via TWRP.
Steps I think to do for new phone:
1) Run OTA update to the latest version.
2) Unlock bootloader.
3) Install and boot into TWRP with keep system as read only and cancel if prompt for password.
4) Install FED and Magisk.
If to install updates over existing miui version:
1) Boot into TWRP
2) Install the updates.
3) Install FED and Magisk.
4) Clear dalvik cache and reboot.

As for my understanding, it will return to stock if you didn't flash the force encryption Disabler, that's the point to keep twrp if install the update.
If we had to flash magisk again means we will looks all data again, is it?

Because you are flashing the update via twrp. After the flash, you are still in twrp. This is the moment you decide to keep twrp or not. If not to keep, then you can reboot as per normal and let the encryption run itself and back to stock recovery. I am not sure how will the magisk become after this.
Therefore, I will flash FED for magisk 17.3 before I reboot.

[Guide] OTA updates on non-stock recovery (TWRP)

If you've flashed a non-stock recovery like TWRP*, you can not use the OTA update feature. You need to flash the full ROM via TWRP.
* TWRP is now officially supported, make sure you flash that version if you're using an older, unofficial TWRP.
1. Obtain the ROM you want to install. Make sure the download is from miui.com if you want stock
Official site -> My phone is the EEA version, so I use the 'Mi 9T EEA' tab. The website does not update links immediately after a ROM update is released, so you may have to do a bit of digging if you want a very recent update.
You can also check ROM links on third party sites like ezbox.idv.tw, again, make sure the actual download links are from miui.com and not somewhere else.
Latest EEA ROM(Android 10) as of 2020-10-24 -
V12.0.3.0.QFJEUXM
Nightly official LineageOS builds
2. Get into TWRP
Either run 'adb reboot recovery'
Or power phone off and boot into TWRP by holding PWR+VOL_UP during boot
3. Upload the ROM to the phone
Code:
adb push ~/Downloads/[B]miui_DAVINCIEEAGlobal_V12.0.3.0.QFJEUXM_12b99693bc_10.0.zip[/B] /sdcard/
4. Flash the ROM via TWRP
5. Flash Magisk if you use it, because flashing the ROM deletes it.
6. Remove the update file:
Code:
adb shell rm /sdcard/[B]miui_DAVINCIEEAGlobal_V12.0.3.0.QFJEUXM_12b99693bc_10.0.zip[/B]
That's it! Reboot your phone into your new ROM!
Also check out my debloat list and my detailed phone settings.
Additional note - formatting /system will brick your phone and you'll have to recover using a fastboot ROM.

If you've flashed a non-stock recovery like TWRP, you can not use the OTA update feature. You need to flash the full ROM via TWRP.
So how to get around this when the updater is telling you there is an incremental update?
Simple, we tell the updater to download the full image instead, move the update from the original folder so MIUI won't attempt to upgrade from it on next reboot, boot into TWRP and flash the image there.
1. Settings -> About Phone -> System update -> three dots -> Download latest package
2. Get filename of the update:
3. You now have the filename of the update. I got miui_DAVINCIEEAGlobal_V10.3.15.0.PFJEUXM_b6738621e2_9.0.zip and will be using this name throughout the rest of this how-to, replace the examples accordingly based on what name you got.
4. (optional) Backup the latest ROM file to your PC:
5. Prevent MIUI from seeing the update file and trying to update from it on accident by moving the file a folder higher:
6. Power phone off
7. Boot into TWRP by holding PWR+VOL_UP during boot
8. Flash the ROM via TWRP
9. Flash Magisk if you use it, flashing the ROM deletes it.
10. Boot back into Android and remove the update file:
That's it!
You can also download the full ROM directly through miui.com, but keep in mind the website does not instantly update the link there after a ROM update is released.
https://en.miui.com/download-361.html#619 -> My phone is the EEA version, so I use the 'Mi 9T EEA' tab.
Page best viewed in Firefox, clicking on the lock icon -> Arrow icon in the security tab -> Disable protection, since Xiaomi can't even set their website up properly.
In my case the ROM download through phone was corrupted and I had to edit the site URL from the filename I got to get a proper update file:

Hey @C0rn3j
I am on stock 10.3.12.0 PFJEUXM and TWRP 4PDA 3.3.1.-2 fix and Magisk.
My questions:
1. Is it worth the upgrade to MIUI 11 as it is still Android 9
2. If I flash it through TWRP, did you loose any dual app settings? (as I lost dual apps while backing up the phone with TWRP and Titanium backup)
3. as you said I have to flash the Magisk again, did you choose the latest or the same as was installed on the phone before the upgrade?
Thanks in advance for reply

1. Security updates.
2. I don't use dual apps so I wouldn't know. AFAIK people had issues with using the backup/restore functionality of TWRP on that version. You should probably update it as I believe latest is -4
3. Latest.

I have Nova Launcher, do you use default or as well external one?
Do you think Nova will stay untouched with this upgrade?

Nothing will happen to it
If the Magisk have to be flashed again, does it mean all the hide settings which were there before has to be set again or stay there from the old version? I have few apps in Magisk hide root, so just wondering how this will be affected with rom update
A second question:
I am on 10.3.12.0 not upgraded yet to 10.3.15.0.
Can I upgrade straight to V11.0.2.0 or first to 10.3.15.0 and then to V11?

While flashing did you untick Recovery in the TWRP as I believe the whole 2,2GB ZIP has recovery image and could be flashed and overwrite the TWRP?
Your guide not working, twrp failed to install the update "file corrupted".
I've downloaded the OTA package from "http://c.mi.com//miuidownload/detail?device=1700361" and twrp very happy to install this file, my Mi_9T at the latest update 11.
Unfortunately the archive downloaded through the Updater cannot be flashed as is through TWRP (message: file corrupted)

Installation update error

Hi using latest updated stock rom with root..
Magisk
New August update doesn’t install..
Before i used to install updates in root..
Now cant..
Help..
Do you have twrp installed and if so did you flash any mods to the system?
If no mods were installed just flash the stock boot.img for your firmware version using fastboot and reboot and apply the update

Custom recovery that's why you cant install. Ota updates don't usually work with a custom recovery installed. You will have to flash stock boot.img there is a whole thread about this and all versions of the stock boot.img here https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a3/how-to/guide-how-to-root-mi-a3-magisk-t3958509/page43
You were even the last person to comment on that thread

Maybe try to read it at least one more time..
same but different problem.
I'm having somewhat similar problem here, but the thing is, I'm using stock mi a3, without any custom bootloader, twrp, rom, etc.
currently in version 11.0.17.0.QFQMIXM
trying to install the august security update that was supposed to be version 11.0.20.0
updater showed the august update as 464mb, which is weird as its supposed to be 34mb or so.
any help from the experts here are kindly appreciated.
I have no custom recovery, or magisk but have same problem
So I solved the problem as I love root .. I had to loose recovery sharp... Now I have no recovery . I flashed stock ROM of Build 19 and installed the latest OTA . After then I extracted the boot image of stock ROM then I patch stock boot image of latest build.i got now root with magisk with no recovery . I hope I can install future OTA with the method..
If u can't install u must have to flash fastboot..
I have tried restoring stock boot.img of build 19.. but doesn't installed.. although I removed custom recovery but still couldn't install OTA..
