Audio mod for cradle... - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Hi guys,
I'm planning to mod my cradle by adding a small microphone connected to the CAR_MIC_IN connector and a standard stereo 3.5mm jack connected to the CAR_AUDIO_L/R connectors. The stereo jack will be used to plug in either a normal set of headphones, or connect to the line-in on the computer.
On the "XDA connectors" page it is said that "Audio needs to be capacitively coupled in". What does this actually mean? Do I need to put something between the XDA connector and the jack?
Which impedance would be suitable for the microphone? I can find anything from 200ohm to 2kohm at the shop.
I'll post a step-by-step howto for publication on this site when I have a working mod.

What that means is you take a small non-polar (i.e. tantalum) capacitor (experiment. I seem to remember we used 20 pF), and put the audio signal through it. This removes any DC bias, i.e. it makes the audio signal revolve around 0 V.

We haven't played with it too long, but we suggest experimenting with a number of the circuits from this site:

Excellent. Looking forward to it.

Keep in mind something that I've learned the hard way. You NEED a powered mic with this device. A typical non-powered version just does not work.

For a stereo output this would mean three capacitors? One for each signal and one for the common ground?

No 2: one for each signal line.

No, I was talking about the (mono-)input line, not the audio outputs.

No, just a single cap on the Mic line, nothing on ground lines.

Need to be able to recharge Hermes and play MP3's through car stereo at same time

Anyone have a solution for this? I'd like to be able to play MP3's through my car stereo (via FM transmitter), as well as have it plugged into my car lighter to keep it charged.
I figure I can buy the audio adapter and plug it into a generic FM transmitter. I could also buy a boxwave Versacharger to charge it. But I can't do both at the same time b/c they both use the mini USB.
In any event, this proprietary crap sucks.
The only option I'm aware of:
http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=140425
yes, this is the UNIC option.. because:
a) HTC Proprietary connector: it's VERY DIFFICULT to find this type of mini-usb connector
b) Stereo headphones provided with hermes DOESN't have cables to charge the pda
Expensive option... get a bluetooth headset with 3.5mm input to connect to your FM transmitter ... and say bye bye to wired music.. almost..

Heheh... I actually thought of that. I think I'll go with the cheaper option
Here's how I did it:

Has anyone managed to not only get the sound going through their speakers, but have their stereo mute on incoming call?
I'm not sure this is possible. I imagine your average phone has a pin it sets closed or high or something. The hermes doesn't seem to..
URPREY: Does the adaptor give you one standard mini usb for charging then split the 'special' audio pins to the other standard mini usb? Did you then just adapt a mini usb cable to hook into the line level inputs of your stereo?

It gives me one mini USB for charging, and a port exactly like that on the hermes for the audio/headset portion. I used a usb to 3.5mm adapter from mobileplanet.com to give me the 3.5mm audio out.

Yep, sorry, didn't see the extra adapter. That's a shame. It makes the very expensive first plug poor value for money.
If they come out with an adapter that turns it into mini USB and 3.5mm I'll go for it.. otherwise..
2 other q's:
1) With the first adapter, can you then use ANY usb car charger (ie does it bridge the NC pin to ground?) or do you then need your car charger to do that
2) What triggers 'headphone' detection? Is it the first adapter, the stereo adapter or is it actually plugging speakers into the stereo adapter?
This information would be extremely helpful, thank you!

I can use any car charger, but the other ones I have don't provide enough power to consistently cause the 8525 to recognize the charger (and thus they don't always charge).
I don't know the answer to your second question. I'd be happy to check it out for you tomorrow when it's light outside again

Cheers for that. By not consistently recognize you mean it detects it the first time you plug it in then not anymore? If so that sounds like what I've found too.. it's due to the 'spare' pin 4 (or 2 or B depending what diagram you're looking at) not being grounded. The fact it detects it once per reset seems to be a bug.

Yep thanks. From this I can work out from the pin outs that have been worked out that the tytn detects headphones (and thus shuts off the back speaker) by testing impedance/capacitance or something on the speaker out cables.
Since there are no official cradles for the tytn I'm looking at knocking up a solution like yours, charge in the car and gps nav through the stereo (was hoping for auto stereo mute on call but that's a pipe dream) and doing it without the 2 expensive adapters and car charger my jasjam didn't have.
I've gathered a bit of info about the usb connection from various sites and forum topics. Maybe I should create a/add to the hermes usb port page in the wiki, if anyone but me is interested..
I hope the tytn Y cable is NEEDED, because there isn't a male "minu usb" jack like the one on the hermes in commerce. Cutting original headphones has no results because you can't charge it.
I have thought to buy tytn y cable, open it, and if there is some space inside, to add a 2.5mm - 3.5mm (depends on the free space) jack
So the Y adapter has 3 outputs: to charge, headset & jack.
If no space is avaiable, i cut my headphones and plug it from y cable to my stereo (also with mic included).
Another thing, to detect ORIGINAL CHARGER must be connected B & A pins, as described in THIS url comments
I agree with wiki page

Parrot makes a BT car kit that connects into all factory stereos to use the speakers to play the phone or mp3 through the car stereo speakers. Obviously the mic is a separate item, but incoming calls (or listing to mp3s from your BT phone) do mute the car stereo during the call.
several kits work, but I have Parrot CK3000 Evolution Bluetooth, Hands-Free Car Kit which came with specific harnesses for my car make and model. The other one is a bit flashier here:

[INFO] Pinouts for Transformer Headphone/Mic Jack

Hey guys, thought I'd post up the pinouts. They match the Iphone ones in case anyone is wondering/wanting to make a breakout cable so that you can use headphones and an external mic.
Going from the center outward, i.e. tip to ring1 to ring2 to sleeve:
Tip = Left Channel Output
Ring 1 = Right Channel Output
Ring 2 = Ground (Shared with Microphone)
Sleeve = Microphone
Verified working with my old Logitech PC microphone. I have not checked if there is "phantom power" on the Mic lines (for electret mics).
Thanks!
verkion
if this is the case, i wonder why square readers do not work. Maybe honeycomb?
So there are no combined mic/headphones headsets on the market that would work with transformer (skype, gtalk, etc.)?
Tried to google it with no luck
dcmtnbkr: what are square readers? I managed to get the external microphone working with no problem yesterday.
s_life: any "made for iPhone" mic/headset should work. Same pinouts as them. I just wanted to make a breakout cable for more flexibility.

pretty typical 4 pole TRRS plug.... common knowledge really.
True...except that R2 and Sleeve are often reversed. Thought I'd do others a favor in case they wanted to make a breakout cable. *shrug* you don't need to know, then good for you.

well the standard is r2/sleeve reversed, but ever since apple decided to swap them, they became the new standard... anyone would be crazy to release a product that didn't follow that... 99% of products are now compatible with the apple standard, if they want any sales.
i know why you posted it though.
Thanks for the info!
I'm trying with several headsets, from Nokia (WH-205)and from "for iphone"(iFrogz Luxe with mic)
the result was weird tho....
If I plug in the jack fully, 1) Nokia headset's mic don't work, but R/L output is OK
2) "For iPhone" headset's mic is working, but only give me right channel.
but if I plug in the jack only the TRR parts with out the S, 1) Nokia headset work perfectly with both R/L channel output and mic input, but 2) "For iPhone" one still only give me right channel with mic.
Any thought?
Thanks

Thanks for posting what hardware worked and this pinout.
However, with previous hardware, I have found even the spacing of a quad plug is important.
If you have a micrometer, could you please post some measurements?
If you have a decent macro camera, could you please post a picture?
Hi verkion, I am looking for the same thing here; to record from the internal mic and use the headphones simultaneously with my Asus Transformer. I am wanting to achieve this to turn my Transformer into a multi-track recorder, so I have been using the J4T and FourTracks apps.
Not being too handy with a soldering iron, I brought a pre-made breakout cable which states that it works with iPods (as this post indicates that they are wired the same - amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004SP0WAQ).
However, I am having problems getting this working. I cannot verify that the cable is at fault as I don't have any other devices to test this with, so I was wondering what app you used to record audio and listen at the same time?
Strangely, J4T doesn't recognise the mic and headphone simultaneously, and only picks up the mic alone after this is inserted after it is launched. FourTracks does recognise both, but only after pulling the jack out a little so the tip doesn't contact (and this results in a far lower level signal).
Do you have any advise that you could throw my way? Am I using a cable with the non-iPod wiring, or are the apps simply not up to the task? Cheers in advance!

Poor bluetooth call quality, recommend a good external microphone?

The title says it all, I have an Eonon G2110F based on a RK3188 chip and the call quality of the supplied microphone is not very good and the cord is too long (approx 1 metre).
Can anyone recommend an aftermarket better quality microphone with approximately 2 metres of cord for installation?

The supplied mic is unlikely to be the reason for audio quality due to a design flaw in these mtcb and mtcd units.
This post highlights the design error in these head units. The error is that the external mic is in parallel with the internal - this shouldn't work at all! If using an external mic, disconnect the internal.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3246277
Bringing back this thread... I finally got around to removing the internal microphone from this unit (held off for fear of doing more damage than good!) by cutting the wired behind the touchscreen. Problem is I now have no microphone at all!! I tried plugging in a different microphone to the port on the rear of the unit and still no sound. I am running Malaysk rom, I wonder if there is a setting to 'switch' from internal microphone to external microphone?
Alternatively does anyone know if I can pair my phone to the hu for media streaming only, phone off (set in Bluetooth options of phone) and simultaneously pair it to a Bluetooth hands-free kit for phone audio only, media off (in phone Bluetooth settings)?
Failing that I will need to set it up as speakerphone with a phone cradle as this is the wife's car and she will not be happy with my tinkering!!
Any suggestions?!

same situation here, but for now i left the internal mic soldered and functional... the rear jack has a mic connected but it does not work...
i think that there are a couple of tests to be made:
1. 7floor sound mod- maybe this has something to do with this.... different input for rear/external mic... i already sent a PM to 7floor
2. a "hidden" switch for enabling the external mic, and disable the internal one ... i already send a PM to malay
3. normally the switch should be made when connecting the mic jack ... not working for me either... maybe the wire loom is not soldered properly ?-to investigate
it would be nice if someone has a hint or an advice

Why don't you just solder another external connector to the wires that was connected to the internal mic.
I've done that and it works both for phone calls and Google.

Ordered the mic extension and finally getting around to installing it. Only query is that the tiny mic that came with the unit had 2 fine wires, a red and a black/positive negative. After cutting the male end of the extension cable though, there are 3x wires - red, copper, green. Any idea which go where, and will it matter that only 2 wires are used?

Low tech fix for poor internal mic quality

I installed my headunit recently and noticed the crappy internal mic issues that is so common with our devices. My external mic wasn't going to be long enough to reach the stereo, so I installed a short extension cable.
What I found was:
Bad - Internal Mic, no external mic connected
Bad - External mic connected
GOOD! - Internal Mic with just the external mic extension connected
What a great relief! In my car, I have the GPS antenna sitting on top of the headunit (was too lazy to run the cable and mount "properly") and it works great. Now I also am using the internal Mic with excellent sound quality with just a small extension installed and nothing connected. I was not expecting such an easy time.
I still have the problem with bad A2DP sound quality. I haven't investigated this yet. I also have a weird problem where turning the volume know to the left will sometimes start making the sound louder. Luckily it fixes itself after a reboot and I can also volume down with the steering wheel controls.
Interesting, thanks for the heads up. I wonder why this is?

It sounds to me like it is just a 3.5mm extension cord. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-...458368888&sr=8-1&keywords=3.5mm+extension+mic
Yes, correct. It is just a simple 3.5mm extension cord. I have no idea why it helps, but my system is good enough with it that I see no reason to do the mic hardware hack.
This is what I did except i disassembled, unsoldered the old mic from the PCB and soldered in an extension w/ an 1/8 stereo female bulkhead connection at the back of the unit so i can plug in any mic I want to. Tested w/ my wife and she said it was crystal clear. Prior to that quality was HORRIBLE, not even usable actually.

Guys, I wanted to test the "trick" with the extension but you write now what I did not understood.
Which mic did you unsolder ?
The connector for the external mic or which one ?

unsolder the mic that is internal at the front of the unit. With that though I'd try that extension and see if it helps you. If it does you don't need to unsolder but I really don't see how that could possibly help.

I was so convinced that this was a complete waste of time, I mean really, It makes no sense that an extension cable works, no sense at all.
*BUT*
Shockingly this did make a difference. Not a huge difference, but enough to make the unit usable. I'd say the quality was improved from 0/10, to 4/10. Its still quite annoying for those people unlucky enough to talk to me when I'm in my car, but at least they can actually make out what I'm saying now. I'd love to understand how this could possibly make any difference...
I used a 6ft stereo extension (its what I had lying around). I am now wondering if the position of this cable (wrapped up, or looped or something makes any difference - it must be acting in some way to bleed off excess electrical interference or something.... or something...
Anyways, just thought I'd share my experience.
Interesting, can't argue with results i suppose. I would still unsolder front mic, i bet you'll be impressed w/ the result.
Dave

This would add capacitance to the microphone circuit. To some degree, it may act as a high pass filter.
is this like a very primitive way to accomplish what a ground loop isolator does?

I tried the solution on my Head Unit (RK3188 KGL) and it worked !! The voice quality is improved from 0/10 to 7/10.
Here is what I purchased:
- 3.5mm jack Stereo extension cable (Male-Female) - the cheapest one ($1), without any shield.
- External Mono microphone, with 3 meters of cable - the cheapest one ($1)
Here is what I did:
1. I unsoldered the internal microphone at the front of the head unit. The mic had two wires, which were soldered to Positive and Ground.
2. I cut the 3.5mm Jack Stereo extension cable, to keep the Female-end and ~30cm of cable - enough to place the socket at the back of the head unit. The cable had 3 wires: white, red and yellow:
- the white wire corresponds to the TIP of a jack connector
- the red wire corresponds to the RING of a jack connector
- the yellow wire corresponds to the SLEEVE of a jack connector
3. I soldered the extension cable where the internal microphone was soldered:
- yellow wire (SLEEVE) to Ground.
- white wire (TIP) to Positive.
4. I connected the external microphone to the Jack extension I just soldered.
Et voila!

3.5mm Headphone and Charger Cable Solution

Incase anyone wants to listen to their headphones and charge at the same time, I have these and they work
I tested ones with built in DAC's and it doesn't work, but these cheap 8 dollar ones do.

I know they don't say that they work with One plus but I have these two and have no issues. And no this isn't a sponsored post or something, just wanted to share so no one else has to waste money.
Are you able to check to see if they work with stereo headsets (4 pole 3.5mm)? Both listings have an identical photo showing a 4 pole.... But I don't put much faith in it.

Would iPhone headphones count? The ones with the inline mic?
I think so, never used them before in my life. Is the plug 4 pole? If so it should be sufficient

Ok so I dont have and with that many poles, but I did test both of the adapters cables with iPhone headphones (3 pole) and did a stereo sound test video and they both passed. hope this helps?
Another update, these cables seem to charge the phone super super slow which freakin sucks -_-. It seems to be enough to keep the phone from draining too much, but certainly no where even close to quick charge. Someone needs to make something specifically for the 6t!
I'm also looking out for such a cable, I have no access to bluetooth in the vehicles i drive ( either line in, or cassette adaptor to headphone jack) and in most cases its not practical to add bluetooth adaptors ( power cable routing etc)
Since phone makers are dropping the headphone jack a stupid move why don't they just put two typc-c ports on a phone. One on the top and one on the bottom. Really many like to charge while using headphones.

It wouldn't make sense to make more room in the phone for other hardware only to put another input to take it's place.
USB type c inputs look small to me.

So I ordered the first one, I didn't receive it. I instead got two USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. I'm going to try to get the other one.

So I've noticed something weird. I thought they were working but it looks like it's not supplying enough voltage to charge with these cables. Im still working on finding something that actually works :/

I've had decent success with Bluetooth FM transmitters in this case. Old car as well, and while the sound quality isn't as great as I'd like, it's definitely usable.
Anyone know if Dash charging will work with these types of adapters?
Seems there is one on Amazon with a review that works
