Hi All, was looking at some alternate dialers and found the freeware D9 program. Most of you have probably seen it, however i can't find any reference to it in the form search.
It allows predicitive contact look-up and i find it to be very easy to use. Just load it up (you can still use your normal dialer if needed). The layout is very simple, just press the key with the letter of the contact that you want to dial, i.e.
7 (for S)
8 (for T)
3 (for E) you get the picture
Up the top it shows two buttons, one with the closest match, the other to list the other matches. Once you choose your person it then brings up a list of options, work, home, mobile, sms....just press the one you want and bob's your uncle.

This has helped me move past the SMS contact issues that i have found with my XDA. Anyone got another recommendation for a dialer replacement, i'm keen to try them all.
I've found a small "undocumented feature" when using D9, when you send an SMS from within the dialer the type of message is sometimes not set to SMS (ie IMAP).
Just expand the header of the message you are sending and select SMS.

Is there any kind of tweak of program to allow sending of multiple text messages? The only way I know of to do that now is to open up a new text, touch "To," touch a contact; then the screen reverts back to the new text message with one contact added, and you have to repeat that process for however many contact you want to include. I would like a way to select several contacts from the phoneboon first, and then get to the new message screen. I know that you can select multiple contacts at once, but there is no option to send a new text message to them all at once.
sending a text to multiple contacts
each txt message is like an email, you can simply put a semi-colon ( ; ) after the first contact in the "TO" field of the message. after the semi-colon put a space & the next contact etc etc..
you can also choose menu > add recipients once you create the message. thats kind of what your wanting.
i remember an app called PowerSMS that dealt with "groups" of contacts but it wasn't freeware. you may check into the app & see if it suits your needs
Have you tried...
Select new.
Pick SMS/MMS/Flix/Pix/whatever.
Cursor should now be in the "To" field.
Start typing the name of the contact you want to use.
Name should appear at the bottom of the screen.
Tap the name to insert it in the "To" field.
Repeat for additional names!
Works for my Verizon TP

You could try Moblmsg (freeware). it doesnt store your texts in the standard way but allows you to define and save groups and send texts to them.
I use SKB Group SMS, works great and sends your multiple text in secs....

I know this is probably a stupid question but just wanted to clear it up in my mind:
the reason I CAN NOT reply to all in a text is because the text that is coming to me (SPCS is my carrier) only sees the sender not the sender's distribution list correct?
Hey everyone - just got my photon 4G finally I still haven't explored much into the phone - just getting the basic things set up. This is my first android OS device. I got the dock, but will hold off on doing anything for a few weeks until I get use to the phone OS.
question :
a) how can I remove the "bubble" style SMS's and have the traditional, threaded form? I couldn't find the setting for this (at least from when I clicked text messages > message settings. Can anyone give me a prompt to where I need to look?
b) On a side note - are there more "standard aka non-musical" traditional/professional ringtones available from Sprint ID or through the market for free? I think I noticed one digital ringer and then the old ring from the dated telephone.
Thank you.
If you install handcent from the market, it will give you options. I don't think you can switch with the default sms.
Sent from the best phone yet!
Thanks for letting me know about that.
I was about to ask how to remove the microSD card that I just put in - but see that the "black flap" just lifts upwards freely - maybe I overlooked that in the manual....
Use Zedge for ringtones, plenty for free
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Thanks for that suggestion.
So I downloaded handcent sms - it seems pretty customizable. One thing - does this application then connect to your "data" when retrieving the "advertisements" that are displayed? I suppose the "handcent pro" doesn't have the advertisements. While the application is great and better at removing the "bubbles - I think from a business perspective, reading advertisements while checking out your SMS (whether for personal or work) can be very* distracting.
Are there any other applications (advertisement free) that some of you have happen to use that lists everything "threaded" with the possibility of organizing or sorting SMSs within a directory "tree" (i.e. inbox / outbox / deleted / drafts )?
I may have to upgrade to "handcent pro" if I need to remove these things. Unless really overlooked, I can't believe motorola didn't consider that for their business users...
Go SMS works well too and free,
Yes thank you - I actually installed it :
SMS Go Pro (from android market - free) - it's perfect to what I was looking for (as described above), and from what I see - free from ads! It's great that it has the option to disable other text messaging notifications/services.
I just received my SGS2 and I'm trying to get to grips with it..
I'm on Villain ROM 2.4.2.
My question is about the smart dialling feature. It appears to find the contact that I want ok, the problem here is that it will only allow me to choose the first number that is saved under the contact and offers no way to access a different number for the same contact.
I have many contacts that have a home landline number as well as a mobile telephone number and in the majority of the cases, it defaults to finding the landline number and doesn't let me choose that contact's mobile number instead or any other number I might have saved for that contact.
I know that there is a little arrow/drop list option next to the found contact's name but it just brings up other possible matches to different contacts - not any other numbers?
I hope that makes sense! Does anyone have a solution for this?
I think I know what you mean and if you press the little arrow and you see the list of possibles you need to click the contact for the person you want and it gives you a further list of all the numbers stored for that contact.
You have to be careful though because you mustn't first press your desired contact on that first list or will "lock in" the first number stored for them.
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for that. I'm sure I tried doing that but now you've described it better, it definetely works. Would much prefer it if they could just list all the numbers straight off..
(This is for non-cyanogen roms) This is about shortcut for dialer tab under phone application -
Its annoying sometimes the default behavior of 'Phone' icon. It will launch the call log always and what I have observed that the call log takes much time to open. SO in situations like you are taking a phone number, you will launch phone application then you have to wait for some time till call log opens and then go to dialer tab to type a number...(meanwhile friends will laugh at you for the speed). LauncherPro has the shortcut for direct dial but we may not always use LauncherPro. Well, for all users facing similar problem, here is solution -
Create a temp contact with some minimum number. ex. you can create a contact named 'dummy' and number as 0 or +91 which is applicable for every number you dial in india. Install DesktopVisualizer. then create its widget(1x1) and ask it to launch shortcut of type 'direct dial', select above created contact as target. Now, DesktopVisualizer has a limitation that from a wodget, it can not directly dial a contact instead it will launch dialer tab with that number typed in there. We can use this limitation to solve our purpose. Check check box that says launch dial pad blah blah. and done. this widget click will launch dialer tab for you. the number we gave is 0 or +91, so it dose not affect dialing any number ahead.

Hello, thank you very much about the info. I just came to know that DesktopVisualizer is the one preventing me from direct dialing out from the the directdial shortcut widget.
My question might not be relavent to this topic but could you please give advise on how to get rid of the desktop visualizer and allow me to use direct dial again.
I have tried using DialerOne app and it gives the same result, redirecting me to stock dialpad with number... i wish i can dial it out right away.
Thank you very much in advance for your help.
I wonder if anyone has a solution to the following:
My colleague syncs their contacts with MS Outlook to her Galaxy S3 and keeps numerous additional details regarding their clients in the 'notes' field of each contact.
I have attached a screen shot of a similar situation using an HTC One X. Where the additional information contains a telephone number - the number itself is automatically highlighted and one touch loads the telephone number into the phone's dialler.
However, with the Samsung, all the information, including telephone numbers is in plain text and you can't load numbers to dial from there. A long press offers to copy the text - but only the entire 'notes' field!
This may seem insignificant but when the phone is used for business and for professional purposes you use the 'notes' field of a contact to keep lots of ancillary information which may include other telephone numbers it seems like a significant oversight. You suddenly find yourself one handed, trying to find a pen to copy down information on paper that should be easy to load with a single touch.
It works if numbers are sent as an sms to the phone so I don't see why it doesn't work within a contact's notes field like in the HTC.
If anyone can suggest a way around this I'd be very interested to hear and also if you think it's worth contacting Samsung themselves?
Many thanks in advance.
