Hello! to anyone who might read this
First off, let me tell you a tiny bit about myself (Bare with me here).
My name is Christian, I'm 19 and I'm an intern at an IT-section. I've been working here for a year already - Each year interns are to write two individual papers about different subjects. My last paper was a virtual Windows Server 2003 Server Park Environment for another company. This year my first paper is on Android.
My place of work supports other workplaces, such as schools, the hospital, social workers, basically everything. With next-gen phones and new OS' out - Naturally, we're upgrading. The question is what OS to go with. That's why I was asked to create a paper on Android, showing how a work-phone could be. Not all of the details have been planned out yet, but it goes something like this:
- Create a ROM with the necessary applications
- Strip the ROM of anything ..unnecessary (Could be anything, Gapps even).
- Choose/Develope a Launcher that can work pretty much out-of-the-box without having to customize too much.
That's pretty much all the information I've been given for now. I've been given a HTC Desire to 'play around with'. I've been told we're going to have a meeting about it soon. The reason I'm creating this thread is to give myself sort of a roadmap, I guess. And I'd love your opinions on how I can best do this, what I should base my ROM on and anything else you might think I need to know.

It's a great idea for a workplace to go with android for employees given the ability to create more secure levels of access since it's based on linux. Also the ability to tailor the OS and UI to suite the needs of the business are something that's desired more and more these days. The downfalls you'll have to overcome are battery power (stripped down OS could nix that) and the fact that most companies will lean more towards Blackberry for two main reasons.
First is security, lets face it, Google is the internet for the most part and a lot of people fear the unknown such as where does their data go and what's done with it. Is it erased (securely)? Is it shared and what about data leaks?
Also, even though I love Android, for a business setting Blackberry has everything right. Android lacks in the 'push' area by a longshot and (from what I've seen) Blackberry supports more email protocals. Let's not forget when you're emailing all day or writing a paper a physical keyboard is more desired, a lot of Android phones lack that.
If the correct phones were chosen and (with a custom ROM and apps) the right measures were taken to address the push issue, plus maybe some sort of native encryption to ease security concerns - I think you could make a very valid argument to use Android phones for their employees. Android beats the othe OS types by a longshot, you just have to address those small but major issues.
Using Android as platform for devices inside an organization makes a lot of sense.
I disagree with KCRic about the superiority of BlackBerry on push and mail systems compatibility. Remember that BB requires you to use a secondary server to "translate" your Exchange, Notes, GroupWise or whatever you have to the devices.
Agree 100% in terms of the keyboard issue.
Something Android has on its side is that Google is the internet. Android was designed from the bottom up to be a "connected" platform. This means mobile devices with ample access to databases and hosted applications. If a business is still wondering if the data on the cloud is the solution, they may not be here on the next decade.
Believe me, you don't find many devices with VPN support, something that is already supported on most Android ROMs. Secure connections and a secure local storage can be easily achieved, the tools are already there.
Think also not only on phones but many other devices (tablets, kiosks, etc) that can benefit from this idea.
I think the major obstacle will be to convince the service provider to let your organization put customized ROMs on the devices. They will panic. Maybe if your agreement says that you provide the support. I already have to go through some of this (on a different initiative) and it is not easy.
KCRic was right about blackberry .... was. The Droid Pro puts that puppy to bed for good, I think. To the OP, your company needs to take back that desire and get ahold of a Droid pro for you. That'll be the (as of right now) best device for workplace use and give you the best launch-off point.

My company will most likely be standardizing on the Desire Z as the 'top notch' phone - And some sort of first level entry phone for employees that don't need aweesomesauce features. I've begun dissecting my own ROM using dsiXDA's kitchen. If my company is going to settle on Android as a platform I will have to build the ROM from source, though. Seeing as when I'm finished with my internship someone else will have to continue development on the ROM.
Right now I'm going to dissect a couple of ROMS. My place of work wants to see which of the two fits best for us: AOSP or Sense. I'm an AOSP man myself but Sense is easier to use for 'newbies' and it's also easier to configure too look-and-work-just-like-this, if that makes sense. THANKFULLY dxiXDA's kitchen exists so the workload isn't .. ****ty just yet.

If you don't want the employees messing around with their phones, I'd definately exclude the Market app (Vending.apk) and include the apps of which you believe they are necessary. There's just to much crap in the market and even if it isn't meant to damage your phone, it still can do some damage if you put too much apps with the same functions on it. Experience? Yes, with my X10. The thing was damn slow until I removed a whole bunch of apps.

I've been searching the android market and app-brain for a good note-taking app. I can't find one, so I've started writing one.
The basic problem with most of the ones on the market is that they all are just text input apps.
That makes a lot of sense on a cell-phone, but with the nook an app that was more like a notebook would be much better.
Before I start anymore work on it, though, I thought I would ask if anyone had found a great one. Thanks ahead of time!
there are a few ok options, but definitely not great or notebook like. if you have a good concept, continue it, as none really do the job well enough yet
i use blackink, jorte, and ive been working with a few notepad options, but none are nearly 10/10 quality. 6-7 at best
Check out Springpad in the market. I like it.
I haven't found a good one either. At CES I believe Asus was showing off a note taking app for their android tablet that sounded interesting. Not sure what they called it though. Maybe a search for that could yield some good ideas.

A decent note taking app would convince me to pick up a stylus. I write music and poetry and Evernote is great for keeping track of ideas before I lose them, but it is lacking a stylus option. It would be a good template as far as interface goes.

I'd love to see something more notebook-like, ruled (choice of either horizontal lines or grid), the ability to "flip" pages back and forward... it would be nice to be able to tear-out a "sheet" as well (either discard it, or use it to start a "new" notebook), as well as place "tabs" or "flags" on certain pages.
Anyway, sorry to throw all that out there, just thinking out loud about some of the things I think would nice features. =)
Awesome! I have a HTC branded Dagi coming in this weekend from Amazon and will start fine-tuning the application. I have a griffin stylus, but it's total junk for drawing/writing.
The current version only works in 2.2, but I'll post up the apk when it's at a testing point.
My focus right now is (at least for the first beta) a quick to write app, and a simple UI.

PS - are you planning to allow keyboard input as well, or stylus only?
I'm pretty happy with ColorNote. It is simple and you can put "stickies" on your home screen. It has a plain text notes or checklists.
I use InkPad and share the notes to my Evernote account that way they are all accessible via any device anytime.
I love Genial Writing, it's just like a virtual notebook and compensates for lack of stylus by allowing you to write and then press a button that shrinks your writing and fits it in a line of the notebook. It's hard to explain but using my finger I can make handwritten notes that fit quite a bit of information on one page. Check below for a picture/description.

Hey guys,
After doing some testing I think my Nook Color's settings are off. I run the app and the stylus don't maintain a constant "stream" of points. The result is that it feels like your writing with a pen that is almost out of ink.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I have two different stylus' and both react in a similar way (though the Dagi has better performance)

I know that some people find flashers disgusting, but i cant help myself.
This app brings back all my notes just by installing and allow it to sync with google.
I have been looking for an app like this for awhile so if you are able to make one I would definitely be willing to beta test and pay for it if you decide to not make it freeware.
Awesome! I'm still working on it. The problem I'm currently dealing with is the touch-screen on the nook color isn't that great. Even when using a stylus (with no screen protector) the continuous drag event is broken up a lot. This makes it feel like your "pen" is running out of ink all the time.
I doubt stylus input will work on the nook. I've tried a few, and they all work like a dream on my iPhone and the iPads at the store, but they are frustrating and inconsistent on the Nook Color.

That sucks.
OP, Perhaps your app can add a "hold" button on the app that connects all points drawn in a complete line.. This will "connect the dots" so to speak instead of the jagged lines your getting..
I wonder if any of the sketching apps behave in this similar manner? Have you tried SBM or other sketching apps to see if this problem translates to all apps?

I just looked for a simple but powerfull calculator via the android market. Found nothing but the "old school" ones.
Yeah, there are tons of calculators out there, one has more abilities than the other. But thats not what I am looking for!
I am WORKING with my windows7 laptop, word2010 and microsoft's math4. Give it a try and you will see why I love this combination that damn much!
I am studying machanical engineering, so I need some features more than others, but the biggest thing is it must be as written on paper, that is what word2010+math4 gives me!
I write the fractions just as I would write them on paper, right after x^4/y^2 and space it is shown to me not in that freaky oldschool style, like excel still does.
So, why not have such an calculator on android? That would give many high mathematic working people a chance to get rid of windows, get an tablet (for me still an GalaxyAce) with android and a powerfull but easy to handle calculator.
As I have no clue about programming, it would take me months just to get the first lines, but this job realy needs enthusiasts to get it the way I mind it.
So, if any of you here knows where to place this request, please help me out. There must be sitting some super brains waiting for another challange, this would be a huge one!

I also came across the same need. It is pretty strange that on google play there is no such scientific calculator app available. I mean, the "natural display" feature would really be usefull, particulary on big screen devices. Anyone knows if such an app has been developer since DaBigFreak opened this thread?

Hahahaha I definitely didn't expect to get a response from a 3 year old thread That's great to hear. You guys were actually part of the reason why we decided to develop this app - I ran into the same problem and was amazed at how there were zero natural display scientific calculators on the store, while the Apple Store had tons. We're continually updating the app at the moment and just added programmable constants! If you could leave a review that would mean a lot to me :fingers-crossed:

Cool! I am actually having problemas with my smartphone so i had only the time for quicky trying the app. Now i have resetted it but still it's not ok. I am currently looking for a new smartphone. As soon as i get the new phone, root it i will install your app and review it! :good:

Before that, I'd love to see integrals, sum and matrizes. Then you can essentially do anything you want or that could be done.
Next big thing would be to make variables calculating available. Not storing a certain number as A, B, or C, but let the calculator solve an non-number equation to a specific variable.
Right behind that, setting up variables with a value, so you can define A:=5.0, B:=2*A and the equation only has A and B, the calculator gives the results.

All the things you've asked for are being worked on at the moment, but understandably it will be months before they're actually implemented. At the moment we really need traction to increase the visibility of our app, otherwise there's really no incentive for us to continue developing if it's going to be buried underneath thousands of crappy calculator apps on the Play Store That's why reviews and ratings are so important to us. We do take into account the many features that our users request, they'll all sitting in a document, slowly being ticked off one by one

apologies if this has already been answered i did search and found a few pots but they didn't give me all the information i was hoping for or match my criteria exactly.
Ok so i have a 3 year old son,
his hand to eye coordination is coming along and ever since he's been able to unlock his mothers ipad we cant get him off it.
i have no problem with him using the technology at such a young age in moderation and im sure it can be quite educational with the right apps etc.
however using his mothers ipad is not ideal, its totally open he could accidentally press anything from in app purchases or anything that is available on the internet which is a scary thing.
we came to the conclusion that he needs his own tablet, that we can load with selected app's and he can play etc.
i looked at the tablets designed specifically for kids like the vtech's leapfrogs etc but im not exactly sure they will be the best way forward because they wont really grow with him yes they are probably great for a certain age range but as he gets older it will loose its usefulness.
i need something that's going to be pretty much a disposable price (£30/£60) lets be frank this is probably going to be destroyed on several occasions.
so i want want an android tablet the bigger size the better. I need it to be able to root the device as i want to take advantage fully of titanium back and restore direct to a replacement device if needed.
needs to be able to run sort of childrens apps available i know the can be a broad spectrum but lets just say the average ones (processor / memory consumption wise)
i have seen lots of different softwares to lock the os down, so only use certain apps etc but any other suggestions would be great. or anyone who has made something similar.

I'm very interested in purchasing a Tab S7+ to use as a laptop replacement. I'll still have a Windows laptop for when I need adb, or just need to run specific software, but I'd like for the Tab S7+ to become my workhorse typing machine.
I'm a teacher that runs and operates a tutoring business, so I am literally typing for a good chunk of the day. I use Microsoft Word full time and am fully invested in it. One very specific thing I do is use a font that isn't default to Windows. I downloaded it and use it as a part of my default template for Word, and I use it across all my lessons, letters, and everything that's associated with my business. I'm a bit anal about it, but I like the uniformity. It's a normal font that can be downloaded easily and loaded on to Windows, so it's nothing special.
One thing that I am worried about is the inability to use the aforementioned font on the Tab S7+. Can we use non-default fonts on the S7+? I don't want it to be present across the entire device, but just need it for Word. And even if I could install it, could Microsoft Word use it?
Lastly, while on DeX mode, is the version of Microsoft Word similar to the desktop version? I need things like being able to insert an equation, and specific math-related things.
I asked Samsung's customer service live chat, and they were fairly useless (as expected). Was hoping anyone here that owns one already or will own one soon could educate me. Thank you!

This is not the tool you're looking for.
It will use some custom fonts, but not others. It will do some equations, but is limited.
All day typing is a laptop thing.
Sounds like you're trying to justify a purchase ... it is a very nice tablet b

You're not wrong! I just placed an order for a Mystic Bronze S7+. As it turns out, someone on reddit told me you can't install custom fonts but Microsoft Office does open up documents with the font you're already using so.. I'm not so sure. We'll see though! I might make a YouTube video detailing my experience in case someone else has the same question.
I have decided to use it for drawing and writing with the actual S-Pen than anything else. I can type all day on my actual ThinkPad X1/PC and draw the things I can't actually type (coordinate graphs are a particular pain in the arse) on the Tab S7+. Should also be nice to use the tablet for media consumption since it's relatively lighter. Hard decision to make which finish to go but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to match my upcoming Z Fold 2.

Yes, I'm not regretting my purchase! It has even got me playing a few games. Integration across devices and windows is excellent!
I'll use mine most of the time for presenting talks from and I like to journal and plan days with the pen
