Can anyone tell me if there is a way to default Pocket Outlook to display First Name, Last Name.
I have set all my contact on the PC to First, Last, but if I create a new contact on the XDA or I edit the name of any contact on the XDA it reverts to Last, First.
I have tried this on a Dell Axim X5 (PPC2003) and this seems to be the same.

Yep got that same prob!! But I got around it by saving the contact to SIM then copy to phone and from there add any additional details.

This will work but as soon as you edit any part of the name in the address book it reverts to Last, First again and you have to repeat the process again!
When you sysn to Outlook 2002/XP go to contact select the contact name you want to edit their is an option called "File as" which is drop down menu. it will display the First AND Last Name . Save AND Close repeat step for other contacts.

Oh boy, my favorite Pocket Outlook annoyance, one of many, since I use the GroupWise 6.5 client with IntelliSync to synchronize. What can I say: masochism, a way of life?
Anyway, I solved it by cutting the last name and appending that to the first name for all (250-300 ) my contacts. Only takes one night and is a real good practise for getting used to the touchscreen.
I have searched on a lot of forums, and only 1 tip can be read time after time: get a different PIM, even if you don't have the issue we're discussing right now.
Really, why Microsoft didn't put an option to change the View in there will probably never cease to amaze me :shock:

I understand your point but it all depends how often you sysnc your XDA and use Outlook 2000/XP as you PIM . Well it's one soultion..... :?

The best solution for me is to change all contacts to First Name only containing all full name, but as I am a lazy software engineer I wrote some software to do it. I also wrote it to change any (UK) mobile number it finds to +44 at the start so the caller ID appears when then send sms.
I don't have an ftp site so if anyone wants to e-mail me I can send them a copy - runs on the PC with Office 2000 or greater installed and you can preview what changes it will do before altering anything.
Usual disclaimer applies - Don't blame me and make a back up of your contacts in Outlook before you start.

The ROMkitchen now offers theft protection in ROM
Thanks to Charles Warner, who answered our call for a coding volunteer, we now have an advanced theft protection system. It's called IIWPO, which stands for Interesting Interactions With the Previous Owner.
Simply go to the ROMkitchen and create a ROM with the theft protection feature turned on. Enter your name as you will enter it in the 'Owner Information', and a GSM number of a friend that you want to send the messages to.
Then when someone steals your phone, they probably want to either change the name of the owner, or cold boot the phone altogether. Either way, the device detects that the owner name doesn't contain your name at the next wakeup, and sends one or more SMS messages to the number you set. In the best case, the new 'owner' provided address and all other relevant information. If he/she didn't, at least you have the new phone number of your phone.
How it works:
Registry settings:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\XDA-developers\IIWPO]
Owner: set to owner name device is tied too (this is the master check, won't send a sms if user changed to this one)
LastOwner: set to owner name device is tied too (this one changes as the user name changes, simply to detect changes)
ReportNumber: set to phone number to report changes too.
Files:
IIWPO_main.exe goes in \windows
IIWPO_startup.exe goes in \windows\startup
it sends one of two text messages if the owner details are changed, if they are set to "nothing", then it sends :-
"Name not set, will pick up details if user changes name again"
if the name is filled in it sends :-
"Name : <user name> (<company name>), email : <email address>, phone : <phone number>" this string is guaranteed less than 160 characters.
if the Address will fit in the same text message, it is appeneded as ",Add : <address>", otherwise a seperate text message containing the address is sent.
what if they were to cold boot it? wouldnt that erase the s.w? or is it in the rom?
also what if they put a sim in with no cred?

I have one additional suggestion. Please see http://www.psiloc.com/?id=prod&nrp=53 for a cool application running on Symbian. If one has access to similar APIs on the XDA to get cell info it would be trivial to include location data in the SMS message sent when the device is stolen. This way it could be actually possible to locate it.
And a question, when the SMS is sent by this hidden process does it still generate Message Sent baloons? It would be good if it did not. Thanks for all your efforts.

We don't yet have an easy way to get the location data without doing really weird things. (ROM 3.19.x GER has it, but it's not easily transplanted to other ROMs). Work is in progress though...

It doesn't. You get to be the first to tell the new 'owner' about the feature.

You need to flash the ROM.
I am a little confused about how this works. I went to jeffs kitchen, cooked a rom with the anti theft featur, but it didnt ask any questions of me. I have now flashed the rom to the XDA, am I missing something?

Try setting the owner name to something other than your own name you set in the kitchen, make the device go to standby, wake it up again, and see if your friend gets the SMS.
I maybe didnt read in the kitchen all the details, I wasnt asked for my owner details there, when the kitchen gets rebuilt I will make a return visit.

Yep. IIWPO builds on the assumption there are significantly more people that do not know about its existence than people that do. It builds on SBO: Security By Obscurity, which is usually not a very good concept for security design. But it is adequate in this circumstance, given that it's very hard to build something which would be secure against a knowing attacker without modifying the hardware or messing with bootloader and OS in such a way that the attacker cannot load a new OS. But then the attacker could just use JTAG. And even if he she could not: given the cheap supply of units with broken screens which are incredibly expensive to fix, the screen is by far the most valuable part.
Ive cooked a 4.00.05 Rom with this feature.
Ive checked and confirm that the following are installed:

when i reset my xda it sent a text to my dad as i have his number on it...
but now it doesnt send none at all i changed it to my name then i decided um i want to try it out to see if it works so i put in noddy and pressed ok but no text :| so i restarted the xda and it still didnt send no text so i just put it back to normal and left it at that :\

it performs its checks on wakeup, I am unsure if soft-reset (what I figure you mean by restarted) would trigger the check. Change your name to noddy, turn it off, and turn it back on again.
I've had my device running at least a month now without hard reset, and just changed name to noddy, turned it off, and back on again, and it sent the relevant text message.
If you are sure it isn't working email me at [email protected] and we'll find out what the problem is.

This software is an Antitheft and you can use it to track your device when it was lost or stolen. It works catching a formated SMS sent from any phone and then send useful informations back.
You can use it to others objectives, like keep your eye in your child. Use your imagination!
If the thief change your SIM card, you will receive a SMS alerting you and you still can track your device. All you need to do is set an emergency cel number.
RemoteTracker can be added to third part custom ROMs. But, with a hard reset all configurations was lost. Now, RTRegCreate tool can create a configuration file using your PC. ROM cookers can use this DLL to make RT hard reset safe!

I did this project to be multi-language. In this version there is Portuguese (my mother language), English (sorry about it, my english is very bad), Dutch (thanks to Cybermoose, from etenusers) and Spanish (thanks to Popy from etenusers). For those of you who are having the problem with the help file,
with some strange certificate errors and PIE opening when you start RTconfig, the problem lies with having the default program that opens html set to something besides PIE (Opera 9.5, perhaps)
To fix this, use schap's Advanced Config tool to set .htm and .html files to be opened by:

I didn't know this software. Very good I think, I'll try later. But I suspect the objectives are different. RemoteTracker works only in silent mode to help you find your device if you loose it.
There is only one user interface to configure few parameters. After that you don't need to use it any more.
All functions are activated by SMS (remotely) and the answers will be by SMS or e-mail. For example you can use your wife's phone to send SMS to your lost phone and then receive GPS coordinates to find it.
If you want to compare RemoteTracker with other software, it's more similar to Mobile Justice, but with more features.
This is first goal of RemoteTracker. The second is help you to retrieve your personal data back. It's not totaly done yet. There is a work in progress.

About suggestions that similar software already exists, this is no argument that this software should not be developed. We see so many sw that do the same thing. Some do it better than the others. So, even reinventing the wheel is necessary smtimes because smone came made the tubeless tyres by reinventing the tubed ones. (and ofcourse, we all made "Hello World"'s, isn't it)

One thing I'm thinking is how to reinstall RT automaticaly after a hard reset. May be using external cards, but the autorun feature only works when card in inserted.
Built into the ROM is possible, but only ROM cookers or manufactures can do it.
I think its early to think about it. RT have to me more tested.

All WIMP does is send an SMS back with the current GPS co-ordinates, very useful but severely lacking compared to what the OP is trying to do. That said it is native PPC code with no need for .NET.
Surely we should commend anyone trying to write alternatives as without that attitude we would all be using Windows with MS Office and browsing using IE. Possibly not the best analogy but it will do.

also another suggestion is, for the phones which do not have GPS, maybe it can send the tower information ? So that it could be used to track where it is based on the tower information ?

When you run RT for the first time, the IMSI of your SIM card is stored. After a new 'boot' this IMSI is verified again. If the new IMSI does not match with the old, you will receive a SMS alerting you. This message has the new number. You must input an emercency mobile number in config tab. This number, of course, must be a mobile number diferent of yours (your wifes, mother, son, or so).

Edit both files and just translate ignoring the words between < and > characters (those are "commands").
Edit language.xml file and insert the lines below before </languages> (last line):

Today I was roaming around some blogs and stumbled upon an article with some tips to protect your "smartphone", they talked about a software called mSafe, I even downloaded it for test.
Anyway, it does mostly what you want to develop. The site is http://www.motionapps.com. Their apps are intended for Treos but mSafe states that it's compatible with WM5.

Well... I'm not familiar with windows mobile programming but I'm a SIM Card programmer. I don't know if you can access STK commands (commands to the sim card) via the Windows Mobile API's but, if you can, there is a function ("proactive command" using the specific SIM terms) called "PROVIDE LOCAL INFORMATION" that gives you exactly this information (and more)...

Here's the situation: program looks good, but I'm using this at work on a corporate network that I do not have access to router settings to open a port. So, I cannot use this program unfortunately. Unless you know a way to bypass using a port over the internet.
Any other program suggestions?

I'm going to fix my earlier post--TB doesnt know how to properly handle importing outlook contacts. Its an issue on TB end which caused TB to separate contact information so that I have like 2-3 of the same contacts, but with different data in each one.
If you fix all of TB's contacts (or dont import from outlook), finchsync will sync to the pda properly.

thanks for the effort, it just isn't seamless enough for me. i have to be able to connect my phone via USB, press sync and be done with it.
I'm pretty well versed in computers, and have no problem figuring out finchsync, it just isn't practical. i have over 300 contact in outlook too, and most of them have multiple emails, addresses, and contact phone number, it would take forever fixing them once imported to Thunderbird.

If it is any consolation...I use birdiesync, and it works pretty good.
Thunderbird 3.0 is progressing along in dev, so maybe there will be better functionality going forward.
Post some message on David Ascher's blog for an enhancement request, and maybe it could become a higher priority. Or better jump in with both feet on open source product dev...it sounds like they need the free help.
If the dollar wasn't so down on its luck then birdiesync might not be such a bad deal.
Maybe you can lobby gc14, dcd, and all the other allstars here to work on Thunderbird while everyone waits for the newest thing in the cell phone world.

My two cents(or buck n' a half)
1. Thunderbird - WOW I absolutely LOVE it. HOWEVER their is one little thing that REALLY chaps my ass with it and thats syncing contacts throughout multiple computers. I've done so much googling on the subject you can't see the letters on my keys for "s-y-n-c t-h-u-n-d-e-r-b-i-r-d"
If someone has a good solution for a contact book that can sync BOTH TB and PDA's by all means throw it up here and lets get down to business.

3. I'm looking for a TRUE SYNC! NOT a thunderbird workaround replacing the contacts file. Does birdie or Finch do that with the Titan/Mogul?

but I advice to think well before you put your data in any electronic media....
if there is only the matrix card data, then nothing special can be done.
you will have to know also the login and the password, or else it will e totally useless.

PS: There should be an app to replace ATM, identity, social security, finance, and all cards, so I can leave my wallet at home

Sure, but i guess that the odds to loose your PDA or someone access data on it its the same as loose your wallet (with matriz card inside) or someone check it.
Although, aware of that, thats the reason i encrypted the file, i deleted the matriz.txt and i will implement password. I may call it try to lower the odds of something bad happen, however, it's always a risk

Hi. Yes, it works. However i think that something can go wrong.
But lets check first some things.
Did you edited the file matriz.txt to your matriz? If not, you need to do that BEFORE run the app for the first time, otherwise you will get a default matriz card which is random.
If you didnt edit, and now that you have run the app, let me say how you can do it.
Go to you app folder, which maybe /Program Files/Matriz CGD/ or /Storage Card/Program Files/Matriz CGD/
Then delete a file called matriz
Then, in your windows notepad, edit the file i posted as attachment here to your card. For example, if your matriz is 123 687 497... it will become 1 2 3 6 8 7 4 9 7 ... and do it for ALL the numbers, this way you will replace the entire numbers in the attached txt.
Then, put that file (the matriz.txt) in your app folder (maybe /Program Files/Matriz CGD/ or /Storage Card/Program Files/Matriz CGD/)

I did leave a comment on windows marketplace for your application, did you see that?
I already installed the new release but I found an error that crash the application. If I push the button "calcular" after putting the password, the program shows an error and close because no column or line is selected.

It's Solved. You can install the last cab from here or wait from marketplace. If you wait for marketplace, it will take about 1 week or more because one other version is on it's way so just after that being approved i can send this one.
I saw now your comment, however i would ask you to next time please mail me or send me here the bugs because i see it more often here.

Fully skinnable.
Images now fill the whole space.
And the potential for the initial contact crash is fixed.
And the skinning can use pngs with transparency.
And it should be installable to the storage card now.
I developed an app to add the facebook pic to outlook contacts.
Sense 2.5 automatically adds images to your device to be used for your contacts in Sense.
But, the image is not added to your outlook contacts.
I went through the threads that it suggested before creating this thread.

What does the app do:
Interactive Mode:
For each contact

After pressing Start, give it a minute. It is looping through all contacts finding the ones that are associated to a facebook account. It stores them in a dictionary for processing with the other buttons.

Make sure to sync with facebook before running the app. Otherwise you will need to click on an eror for each contact that yoou sync with facebook.
Tips / extras
App is fully skinnable.
If you want to make the button look like it is pressed when you press it, there are images in the program directory for that.
All artists, please post custom images and backgrounds.
Control locations are not editable. (maybe in a future version I get screen coordinates from an ini file.) But, for now, just make images that assume things will be where they are.

I'm no good with graphic design, just wanted to stop in and say that I can't wait for this to come out. It's very annoying that outlook contacts don't retain the facebook pictures after a flash.

Nope. It just lets you set the outlook image to be the image that Sense Facebook integration downloaded.

Ok, downloaded and installed (on device) but get an error abt 5 seconds after having pressed start...
I was wondering if it would be possible to have the app like continuously running or being linked to the update feature in Sense contacts...That way, whenever an update is done on facebook and synced with Sense it gets to Outlook, without the need for a manual starting of this app...
Will be on the lookout for an update, so I can try again.

Would you be able to post a screen capture of your error?
Appoximately how many contacts do you have that sync with facebook?
There are just a couple things that it could be.
If the facebook image for the contact is not on your device. That could cause an error.
Discovered some inconsistancies in the data that I was looking for.
Currently, it only handles contacts where the facebook id is noted by
<sn>id:somenumber/friendof:somenumber</sn>
But, it needs to be modified to also handle
<Facebook>id:somenumber/friendof:somenumber</Facebook>

Hmmm, 'Shake n Save' is gone on the NRG feb 16th ROM...so, sorry, no screenshot, however, it is a standard error:
"An unexpected error has occured in FB2Outlook....
Select Quit and then restart this program...lalala

I think I figured out what the issue is. A long while back, contacts used to store <sn>id:
Now they use <Facebook>id:
I have modified the app to handle both.
I pulled the original version and just uploaded a new version.

I'll fix that install path tomorrow. Need to get some sleep before work.
I will also verify that the facebook image exists on the phone before accessing it. I'm sure that is where the exception is occuring.
Second Run:
It behaves the same when keeping the outlook picture. After the second contact is clicked the program crashes with the same errormessage.
The previous replacement seems to be kept on the device and the thus modified contacts seem to get synced correctly to the desktop.

Probably the first since the timestamp in the CAB shows a difference of more than 1h. I'll try again with the version that is there now.
Maybe using a version number in the filename isn't a bad idea.

My guess is that some of your contacts that are associated with facebook do not have a facebook contact picture on the phone.
Could be caused by a friend on facebook cancelling his or her facebook account.
I'll add a check to make sure the file exists tomorrow and some exception handling for anything else I haven't thought of.
