XDA Virus? - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

My SD Card has just become corrupt. It looks like it was overwritten by something, all the file and folder names have been turned into unreadable characters. I haven't been able to access any data on it, I could only reformat the card to use it again.
Is this a sign of a virus attack, or just something that happens with SD cards?

It's not a virus, since there are no PPC viruses. Not sure what happened, a few people have reported card corruption in certain situations. See other threads on that here.

I couldn't say one way or the other if your problem is caused by a virus, but I would be interested to know why Carlos thinks there are no PPC viruses?!
From my limited knowledge (at the moment) of the PPC, the underlying OS is very close to that of PC based Microsoft OS's. I thought PPC runs things like Java and there are certainly Java based viruses.
I would be interested in other peoples thoughts on this, and in addition, can anyone recommend any particular Antivirus software for the XDA (free or not so free).

ppc 2002 dont support java nativly
a file virus would be possible
a mail or www virus depend on how the rigths of outlook ppc and pocketIE are compared to windoze's

why Carlos thinks there are no PPC viruses?

Because there simply aren't any. Never have been, but eventually I'm sure there will be. Yes, it is possible to do, but hasn't been done. Won't be quite as easy as a Windows virus.

I think I have a norton antivirus for ppc somewhere... I never got around to installing it because of the lack of need..
but I'm almost positive it was symantec...
I dont know how much use it will be... if what Carlos says is true then any virus program is slow as hell looking for virii without virus signatures am I not correct?
and without viruses... you dont have virus signatures (obviously)
my 2 cents anyways

Yup, there are anti-virus programs for the PPC, which is a huge joke on the public, since there are no viruses. Scumbag companies just trying to get their foot in the door by having you install something that at best, does nothing, but more likely just eats up resources for nothing.

i use PCCILLIN for ppc, wich never found anything, and i DO download alot on my xda.
they seem to update the pattern file every few days, dunno for what tho.

so if they update the pattern file every so often then surely that must mean that these viruses do exist?
I've never heard of one..
maybe they are lab viruses? theoretical viruses?
The thought did cross my mind when I saw the software
Maybe the pattern files contain code to find competitors anti virus proggies and exterminate them on the fly

Going back on track,
I did experience card corruption like that before....
One time my ppc reset by itself and I dashed to grab the card out the slot before it formated (SD card erasure issue on ppc2k3) I put it back in to find only half my folders existed and what was left was total gobbledegook with ASCII chars as folder names etc...

Do a search on SD Card Erasures. The problem lies in WM2003 PPC PE handling of the SD card. It reformats the cards when you switch themes or add sounds schemes to the PPC PE.

I've done that, many times, and don't have card problems.
Removing a card during a reset or other operation where the card is accessed would very likely lead to problems.

done what? heh
personaly I think the phone had gone halfway through its dirty dead when I ejected the card and thats why I ended up with a corrupt one instead of a formated one...
but then I do have erasure issues
So I can truthfuly say that I know why my card became corrupted in the first place... sorry if I suggested it was a new issue.

Sorry, I mean I've got sounds and themes that I use, and don't have card issues.

MicroDrives are sensitive to presuure; when you were rising or descending, the change in pressure could have caused the damage.
recommendation: turn off the device for take-off and landing.
My buddy had a similar problem with his. His MicroDrive stopped working. WMStorage didn't fix the issue either. He was running the original ROM that came with the device and some software, nothing more. The only thing that brought back the drive was to do a hard reset, then flash the factory ROM back onto the device. I've had issues with the drive myself so run everything off of my SD Card and only use the MicroDrive for temporary storage or backups of my SD Card. This sucks that we can't trust the drive. Just makes me nervous using it.
agreed! I'd rather prefer 4gig flash memory to a 8gig unsafe microdrive.
but it's all about marketing issues
very true..all my data was lost...i guess it ISS becuz of the rise in pressure and all that,..but my microdrive izz up and working again..!
My microdrive had corrupted twice before, and I had thought that using the miniSD would completely solve the problem. I was wrong.
Yesterday, my genuine Toshiba miniSDHC lost everything on it. I could not recover it with Pocket Mechanics Professional. Soft reset does not help, as it did previously. I don't know if this was caused my the repeated removal and insertion if card which performed in attempting to fix my SIP selection problem.
The lessen for me is, do a regular backup to PC and do not take out and put in the card without switching off the device.
I still have not reinstalled my applications and data yet because today is the day to upgrade my Dopod to WM6. I'm really looking forward to the upgrade. I expect some of my applications to be dumped for compatibility reason, not in the end I'd have a transformed and better computer.
Htc Advantage Microdrive Failure
I want to add my voice to the concerns raised regarding the much sung about MicroDrive with 8GB.
I have lost all the data I installed and stored on the MicroDrive. I had photos, documents - some of them work related and do not have them anywhere at all.
Does anyone have any idea how I can undelete or recover these?
By the way, I did not delete them, they were simply gone!
Please help.

Try to use WMStorage which will allow the drive/s to be recognized under Windows as an external storage drive. Then get yourself a copy of Ontrack Easy Recovery and use that to recover the lost files. I've never had to recover files from my MD or SD yet on my phone but my cousin had a camera that did something like this....all pictures just dissappeared and I used the program and got back stuff he forgot about that had been looooong gone. Works well. Hope this helps
curious?

Thanks ltxda, I will try your advice right away.
YOSEFE.
Thanks ltxda for pointing me to WMStorage. I downloaded and installed the software. My Devive and the Microdrive are recognised as you stated.
However, the only hitch I hit is the cost of Ontrack Easy Recovery, is there no free reliable recovery software somewhere?
Thanks in anticipation.

Not sure if there is a free trial available or not. You may want to check their site. I just have a copy since I purchased one for work. You can also go to www.download.com and try one of the other recovery software trials from there. I'm sure there are a few there that may help or you could try alternate resources.

I agree with you. Makes me sick that I have this EXPENSIVE device and don't have enough trust in the one feature they pushed because of the constant problems.
Have some questions for you:
- How were you transferring files to the MD? ActiveSync, Vista or WMStorage?
- Would you mind posting the resolution here in case others have the same problem?

Care to share your solution mate.
just use the
sorry guys been busy at work, i didnt really fix it without losing my data. i just used the restore microdrive option and then re-format it, lost all my data but at least its working. lol. still pissed off though.
i fiqured some bits out though, wether your using active sync or wm5torage 1.75 and your transfering huge amount of data at once windows then give an error cant complete , cant find drive source.
So I had to do all the restore microdrive thing again but was just testing why it happen the first time.
good thing to do is to use wm5torage 1.75 to transfer but only transfer some amount and wait for awhile and continue.
File Scavenger
File Scavenger is much cheaper for recovering files. It works perfectly for me. The demo is a teaser. It works but doesnot let you recover files. It shows that it can recover the files.

Sprint beta 3.16.651.0 microSD problems?

I've been running the leaked 3.16.651.0 ROM on my Sprint Mogul for a little less than month now. A problem I've seen (only twice) is that the microSD card just 'disappears'. Both native file explorer and Resco file explorer say it isn't there when I try to navigate to it. Problem is resolved with a soft reset.
I don't run programs from the card so I wouldn't notice it is missing unless I'm specifically working with files on it, which isn't too often. The fact that I've seen this twice (out of maybe 20 times working with the card) just had me wondering if anyone else has seen this. I'm using the 8GB Sandisk SDHC card. Since I just got the phone, and updated to the ROM about the same time I got the card, I have no experience with the card running on stock ROM
I've never had that problem (leaked or official ROM), but I seem to remember my old 6700 had issues like that when I installed voicecommand.
you should do a search cause alot of people with dcd rom based on the new rom had the same issue i think you have to not use encryption or something

correct me if im rong, i thought the mogul supported up to 8gb so why would you need the patch
Originally, it wasn't supposed to. It would only support up to 2GB. Coincidentally, it works, but will have it's days that it won't. This is to ensure that it works constantly.
I am running M$ Voice Command (1.60.4622.0) and did see this on rare occasion on my old 6700 too, but didn't investigate back then. I have not turned on encryption. There hasn't been a problem recognizing the 8GB capacity, just with it completely disappearing. It isn't a large problem, but even one disappearance seems odd.
I'll try collecting some baseline stats on how often it is disappearing by going to it regularly, and then try suggestions to see if things change for the better.
Any suggestions on places I should look beyond using file browsers (stock, Resco) and start>settings>device information>memory>storage card to see if the card is being recognized? I'll also try card re-insert vs. soft boot when it is gone to see if that brings it back. Thanks for the suggestions

i seen ppl say it works fine with 4 gb idk about 8 gb
Ran fine yesterday, saw problem today (last soft reset 1d2h ago). Additional details on symptoms on this particular failure: File browser: sees top level folders on storage card. In some of these lower level folders and files appear, in some not. Nothing consistent with respect to levels down where things start disappearing but I couldn't get to any folders or files more than two levels down. start>settings>system>memory>storage card shows capacity of card as 7782.5MB (correct), same amount as in use (incorrect), and 0 free. Popping the card out and in resolved the problem. Next time it fails I'll see what Pocket Mechanic can see with respect to the card when it goes out.
I did a search on 'storage card disappears'. Seems this is a problem folks experience across phones and WM5/WM6 PPCs. May even be the card. Didn't come across any explanations of the problem or fixes (some registry hacks related to thinking it is a new or old card, that were later discounted in the thread, but even if true, the new/old card isn't the problem as I'd still expect to see files if it were a new card). e.g., http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1138270. From what I found searching, its something I live with for now. I'm pretty sure it isn't anything specific to 3.16.651.0 ...

Tmobile gs3 has problem w/ external storage, im rooted so cant return it? I need Help

Alright guys, I noticed today that my Titanium Backups aren't on my mount/extsd storage, and I tried to change the backup location under preferences, but it wouldn't allow me. While checking my sd card I noticed the only file stored on it is my pictures? I tried downloading apps to sd in an attempt to move titanium backup, and that's when I realized I have a serious issue I believe. I was given a message when apps to sd opened that said, "this device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated"? Whatever the hell that means by emulated I don't know? The sd card was working in the last phone I used it in.
Biggest problem is that I'm rooted, so I can't return it under warranty! At least I can't to my knowledge. I'm in serious need of some help here, I purchased the phone at the T mobile retail store, so I don't know if I can sneak it past them somehow, or if I should maybe just (it hurts to say it) brick it on purpose, and pull the old" it just shut off and wouldn't turn back on" routine?
Please guys, any and all advice will be much appreciated!
Before doing anything drastic, have you thought about maybe reformatting the SD card first? If that doesn't work then try another SD card (they do go bad you know). It sounds like something that should be easy to fix. Whatever you do please don't brick it on purpose. It's not anyone's fault that your device is now acting up after rooting it. At least do them a solid and ODIN back to stock, then try to return it if that's the case.
Hi,
You should read this thread. It should shed some light on your external SD card problem and provide a couple of methods to get around it.

Yes I did format it to no avail, and I'm headed home soon where I'll try a different sd card. I don't want to brick the device, and I've had to unroot and return a phone before because of a hardware issue with the screen that wasn't my fault. The problem with doing that in this situation is that I don't believe there's a way to unroot it and go back to the stock recovery or reset the binary flash counter. As far as you saying it's not anyone's fault, it sure is my friend and it's not mine! I had a Galaxy s4g that wouldn't read an sd card two days after I got it & I had to return it. So, as far as being no one's fault, not true... It would be Samsungs fault, and rooting it had nothing to do with it. If I broke a device because of my own foolishness or stupidity, I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER try to exchange it! The entire basis of my spirituality is based on karma and I would suck it up & pay for my mistake but maintain my peace of mind. This however, I am not at fault for, and I shouldn't be responsible for faulty hardware just because I obtained root access.

Okay I've read the links and this is very odd??? I need to hear from someone with the gs3 that they've also discover that they're phone recognizes & reads the sd card, but will not allow apps to write to it. PLEASE, someone check this and help me out here!
I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT IF ALL Gs3's DO THIS, OR IF I NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RETURN TO STOCK & EXCHANGE IT?
Sorry for the frustration, but I just spent a heck of a lot of money here, and this is a very aggravating problem....
My TB backs up to the ext SD. I had the same problem you did. Too bad I can't actually remember what I did. :crying:
When you go into TB and try to select storage location...nothing comes up but the internal?
I think I manually moved the TB folder from the internal to the external...then went back into TB to select the location...then selected the Detect button...and it came up with a list of folders that I could choose.
It went something like that. Hope that sheds some light...(sorry I cant remember exactly)
FYI...the ext SD folder is under mnt/extSD...or something like that.
I forget to mention something else guys. I am able to copy & paste my Titanium Backups as well as any other files to the sd card. So, the phone recognizes it, and it will write to external sd if I manually copy things there, but it will not allow any third party apps to write to external sd? I also cannot move apps to the sd card? This is a HUGE pain in the ass! I bought the 16gb model because that's all the retailer I my area had, so the sd card is a necessity for me. If I'm downloading torrents or other large files this could be a problem. I'm really wondering if this isn't just my phone?
It'd be great if someone here with the skills could port this mod for us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433436
It basically makes the phone think that the external is the internal...and all files downloaded from the browsers or whatever app that doesn't allow sd access...to go directly to external.

Sorry nothing! THANK YOU! I was like 3/4 of the way to that idea, I had already copied the file, but I was just thinking maybe if I deleted the internal file, maybe now it will follow the one I copied to the mount/extsdstorage? I can't thank you enough for just confirming that this isn't a problem specific to my model. I think that this problem should be explained to everyone & stickied. This is a seriously confusing situation. Ppl who don't root or come to XDA won't have any idea why they're music, videos, or anything from third party apps aren't going to their sd cards? Some ppl may not even realize it? I don't know if it's been mentioned in another thread here yet, but I couldn't find anything in our forums about it, and I've been trying to figure out what was going on all day. I still don't understand what the hell it meant about emulated storage?

All stock Samsung Galaxies S3 do this. Google in their infinite wisdom is locking down apps so they can not write to an external card that can infect other devices.
Problem is we all want more control with our external cards and there are a lot of unhappy campers with this new "feature". Gamers are especially concerned because they can not install their games to the external card to free up more space.
This is a real strong reason to buy the 32gb model and not the 16gb. One could take the stance that they are forcing us to pay a higher premium for our storage when we purchase the phone.
As I said you can do the work around with directory bind until:
1. A dev comes up with a a patch
2. You install a custom Rom like Cm9 that has patched out this security policy.
Never mind... Now that I'm using better keywords to describe the problem, and searching outside of just the US variants forum, I'm finding threads... I feel like an idiot now! Some folks are talking as if this is better? I don't see it though. I did a nandroid after root, and it only left me with around 8gb or so with my apps installed. I know its faster memory than an sd card, but it's kind of a pain. I hope I never need to download anything bigger than 8gb... Doubtful ill need my phone for anything that big though.
Sorry for freaking out and making a big deal out of this issue, but I thought my device was defective, and I wasn't using good search terms. I should have been able to figure this out without cluttering things with a two Page thread.

Yes, I really wish I could take it back and pay the difference for the 32gb, but with being rooted its really not feasible. I was browsing XDA on my phone also, and I didn't even catch the link in your first post, I was only reading the links I your second post, lol. I really feel like a dummy here since my question was almost immediately answered. Also, the browser can act a little wonky sometimes on XDA. Actually you are bringing up a valid concern and one of the first to do it in this section of the US version of the S3, my hat off to you!
It would be good idea to have a stickied thread in general that addresses this. That way ppl will be well aware of how to work around it. And yes, a patch for this would be great, because some may prefer things this way, and alot will prefer the previous standards. I for one don't like this one bit!
Put a stock rom on it and go into the store. Tell them you're having issues, they can order one on their end and send it out to you.
I would know. I worked there.

SDcard dying after suddenly turning off the phone

First, sorry for my bad English. Hope I make myself clear enough for you to understand me.
Second, to the moderators: feel free to move this topic if I posted it on the wrong session. But as you will see reading the following, I believe that the issue I will describe is directly related with the Neatrom - correct me if I'm wrong, but I have reasons to believe that.
So, here it goes:
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 (i9100), running XXLSJ Neatrom Lite v4.0, and this kernell: 3.0.31-Siyah-s2-v6.0b4+
In december 2012, I bought a MicroSD card (model Sandisk Ultra 32Gb class 10) to install in my i9100, and it rocks.
But 4 weeks ago, when I was playing some games on the phone, I ignored the first battery low warning messages, and kept playing to a point that the phone simply turned off. Completely. I recharged the battery and, after powering the phone on again, it showed a message saying something like "blank sdcard" or something. I had many pictures and important movies on that card, so I decided to not format it; instead, I searched for a way to fix it.
I tried to access the files from my computer - on Windows, no success; on Ubuntu, no success; on Mint, no success. Windows and Linux showed the icon representing the sdcard, but when I tried to open it under Windows, it showed a message saying "this disk is not formated. Do you want to format it?". Linux didn't show any message, and didn't opne a single window to show its content. Nothing. Nada.
Then, my cousin (a geek genius) took my card to test it on his own notebook. He made some long research on the net, and installed a software called TestDisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk - linux version) to try to recover the partition (or the MBR, I don't know exactly the tech name of this stuff...). He even entered on the software the number of cylinders, sectors and all that stuff to try to achieve sometuing... But after almost two hours reading tutorials, and trying hard to bring that card back to life with no success, he finally gave up, telling me to RMA the sdcard.
Then, I took the card from his hands, and put it aside, giving up too. Half an hour later, accepting the fact that my files was gone forever, I decided to try to format the card on my phone, to see if it would work after being formated. So, I put the card on the phone again, and powered the phone on... And, for my surprise, the card was back to life! For no reason, it decided to work again! With all the movies, all the pictures, all the games, everything was there, untouched!!!!
So, it worked great in the last 4 weeks, fast and nice - recording long HD movies, taking hundreds of pictures, installing huge data games, etc. It worked fine - until two days ago.
Because, two days ago, I was playing again, and again I ignored the low battery warnings, and it happened again! In the middle of the game, the battery ran out, and the phone turned off. Guess what? Yeah, after recharging it and turning it on again, there came that same message, telling me that my sdcard was blank! Again, no success trying to access it from Windows or Linux. And no geek cousin nearby...
(Of course, I had a backup of my files, created just after that first "death").
so, I sent an e-mail to my cousin, asking him about the software he used, and how it used it. He told me about that testdisk software. I downloaded the Windows version of the software, and give a try - no success. The program didn't recognize the drive letter of my "blank" sdcard, because the filesystem was simply not listed by the program. So, I went to the site, and I read that, under Linux, it was possible to force Testdisk to try to repair filesystems that was not shown in the list, by using a command line telling the software to look for the device through this mounting point (a folder inside /dev/). Linux stuff, I wont go any deep on this here.
So, I decided to restart my notebook, to boot on Linux to try that method. Guess what again? Suddenly, Windows recognized the sdcard again! I just ran the TestDisk utility, with no success - no command was used, I just ran the program, and since it didn't recognize the card, I closed the program. Nothing was done.
But, given the fact that the card was dead twice in the exact circumstantes (battery wearing completely off), and given the fact that the card came back to life after a simple run of the software TestDisk, I refuse to believe that it was a simple coincidence; I am not a geek, not a linux or android expert, nor a hardware wizzard, but my little experience tells me that it is possible that the android system locked the SDcard filesystem in a way that, after a sudden energy cut, it needed some sort of "logical shock" (made by TestDisk, even without any changes or command being called by the user, thats me).
I believe that this issue is part NeatRom's (or maybe kernell's) fault, because in stock roms, the system would close the app and close all sdcard access before turning the phone off to prevent issues like this one.
Again, I must repeat: I am not a technician, not an expert, so chances are I am wrong - very wrong. But I believe that my suspicions makes some sense, and woths to be investigated - or cleared out. And, of course, chances are that the card is deffective - and I already called RMA service from Sandisk. And I made another backup right now. But, I insist: everything is working: no movie corrupted, not a single file is corrupted... So, I still have a doubt here: was this issue cause by a deffective card, or was it cause by the sudden turn-offs?
Before you ask: no, I didn't test playing to the end of battery using another sdcard. By the way, I will never play to this point anymore. And yes, the card is still working!
Sorry for the VERY LONG POST. But I think that this testimonial may be of some value to the rom and kernell developpers.
I can honestly say i have never heard of a Rom or Kernel damaging a memory card, could be yours just developed a fault??

Not the rom itself, but possibly some "features" of this or any other rom related to how it handles battery. I will try to make myself as clear as possible...
I know that in stock roms it is not possible to shoot photographs using flash when battery level is under 15% - this is to prevent sudden turn-off of the phone. And I know that some roms uses some tweaks that allows the user to take pictures using flash under this 15%. This is a thing that most users can think is an improvement - but we know that it is dangerous to use battery in a not-so-controled way. The history I told on the first post is a prove of it!
So, my suspictions is that, in some way, some rom configurations (or kernell configurations) may be allowing the user to play a high-power-demanding game or app to the end of battery charge - when, instead, it should close all the apps after the first warning, and before shutting down the phone. In other words, some roms let the decision up to the user - and if the user is (like me) distracted with some game, and forgot or bypass the first warning, he becomes a victim of this own distraction, wearing all the juice without thinking about closing the apk and shuting down the phone in the correct manner.
So, the question is: are there some rom tweaks that could POSSIBLY be the reason for this kind of issue?
Hope I made myself clear now, despite my horrible "engrich"...

[Q] Odds of getting spyware/virus threw websites? what to do if so?

Hey everyone. I have a question . Whats the odds of getting malicious activity installed into your phone from browsing websites?
The reason I ask is because I found out my phone's browser recently visited a website that I think might have had some malicious intentions and I have been a little paranoid and suspicious of it ever since. I installed some anti virus software (lookout, avg) and ran some scan's but it didnt find anything yet I dont believe those apps work well.
I did a full wipe in AMON recovery and reinstalled my ROM, would that clear my phone of malicious activity? or do I have to do a full RUU, which i have never done .. O_O .... I got my phone off swappa so it came with S-off already and the latest hboot.
I know a sure way of not freaking out is not to visit any sites that you think might have malicious code, but I already visited the site so now im just curious what to do or if I should even worry about it,
Anyone have some comments for me?
I don't know the odds, but you can get avast! for free. It also has theft options on it so you can wipe the phone etc if you lose it or it's stolen. I use the anti-virus on my laptop and have it on my phone as well, although I must say I haven't reinstalled it since my last ROM flash.
I would put that on and run a scan then set up blocking options.
I would just keep a backup on your PC and then surf to your heart's content. Then once a week you or any time you're worried, you can wipe everything and restore from the backup. The antivirus stuff eats up so much resources. I can see it on a computer where you have plenty of extra processing power and ram, plus it can take a long time to restore a PC. With your phone though, you can just set the phone to disallow non-play store apps plus you have superuser blocking things and how long does it really take to wipe and restore? Is it really worth the performance hit for antivirus? I don't really think it is, but that's just me.
Its just like any other "computer" out there. Yes there are virus for android out there and because this is technically a linux kernal, there are known virus that attack the linux kernal. odd are slimmer then say a PC but they are still there. The fun part is this. Just because it doesnt effect your phone doesnt mean you cant effect your computer. what i mean by this is if you just happen to download a windows virus, it wont do a damn thing to the phone, but as soon as you connect it to a windows computer or network to where it can spread..then bam..you just infected your home computer. I have seen this a billion times..so always make sure you have a good clean backup of your phone, and a good antivirus on your phone and computer. as i work in the comptuer industry and do security for goverment agencies as well, never take security lightly...just becuase its a phone, doesnt mean it cant get infected or infect other computers

I will grant that this is possible, although not at all probable. Let's assume you some how manage to get your phone infected, but it does not have any effect on the phone's operation/performance because it is a windows targeted ware. If you have antivirus software running on your PC when you plug in your phone, it should scan the device, find the ware and remove it. What is the problem? Even if it didn't, do you believe that phone antivirus software is better (i.e. more capable) than PC antivirus software? I do not. Antivirus software on a phone can be a massive drain on already limited resources. When all you have to do is keep a clean nandroid backup on your sd card and an additional copy on your PC, just in case, to be completely protected. It seems absurd, to me at least, to waste the time lagging on a daily basis. If you manage to infect your home computer with your phone, the failure was solely your PC antivirus software. Please bear in mind, this is my thinking for the average XDA forum junkie, not the average phone user. The chances of an average phone user reading this thread is slim to none. Also, please know that I do not mean any offense with this reply, and I definitely do not take security lightly, but in my experience (M.S Electrical Engineering, about to finish Ph.D in December) it seems like the whole phone virus subject is still more of a mole hill than a mountain at this time.

Oh I agree don't get me wrong the chances are slimmer to affect a PC from a phone. It does happen more then you think. There was a huge write up regarding that very thing if Linux apple based PC and phone are actually more secure and the chances of infecting a PC are still there. I've never actually fully tested an antivirus on a phone. I have read that some of them have cloud based signature reading so its not downloading hundred of mb worth of signature to your phone. Is it equal to a PC probably not but not testing I personally couldn't say. The limited res on a phone does put a bit into a av on a phone and the are red hogs. Is it worth it don't know. Do I use one. Nope I don't, but again I don't have a windows computer in my house and all my web traffic goes through a av devices so anything coming into my house gets scanned before it even touches my network. So I don't think about it to much

I was just reading some reviews of an app yesterday that said the app had malware that allowed it to send your phone number out to marketing lists, or something like that.
Found one of the reviews: "I started to install this app, when suddenly a message popped up from my TrustGo security app. "This app uses the MobWin ad network, which has the ability to read your phone number and leak it to third party advertisers." TrustGo rated it "high risk" and recommended uninstalling it."
Found two more that said AVG detected malware for that same app.
Any opinions on this?

That is possible. That's one of the reasons ppl get those random calls on their phone. It very well could be an app they installed. That's why its always a good idea to check the permissions when install apps. You would be surprised on what the most basic app has permissions too. There is an app can't think of it off hand that will allow you to modify those permissions for apps.
