Looks like it's Korea only, but quite a nice device. Now if they'd only make that a full alpha keyboard slideout...

Android on Nokia N9?

So the Nokia N9 is a beautiful peace of kit and Meego looks nice, but how much better would some ice cream sandwich be on that thing?
How hackable will the N9 be? I guess the main thing is, will anyone have one? Seeing as its not being released in a lot of places I can see it being hard to get a hold of...
I think that the nokia n9 is a nice phone and I do not understand why nokia do not use Android for its smartphone

It's simple, because Nokia has chosen Windows Phone as it main mobile OS.
As to why Nokia pick Windows over Android, it's simple too. Microsoft needs a great hardware partner to win, and Nokia needs a decent OS to survive. They need each other, and this situation gave Nokia lot of say and control in their hardware and future Windows Phone development. While Android is great, Android doesn't need Nokia and Nokia wouldn't stand a chance in the already super crowded Android ecosystem.
But anyway, the N9/Lumia800 is definitely the most beautiful smartphone I have seen in the last few years. The button-less N9 makes an ideal candidate for ICS. However, it's too expensive at the moment...

I already own what for me is the most beautiful Android phone - Xperia Arc. Just bought N9 yesterday as I couldn't resist not owning such a beautiful loooooking device that is also getting rave reviews.
N9 is just not a good looking device, it feels so f'in right in the hand. The screen, the feel all feel perfectly balanced. It makes my Arc look like a POS. While I love MeeGo so far, I still have lot of learning but frankly, Android messed me up so much that I feel it's hard to survive with other mobile OS if you know to use Android well.
I hope some genius out there can get ICS running on this beauty. Or, I hope Samsung shamelessly copies Nokia design as they are famous copy-cats!
yeah, when i saw buttonless n9 i immediately think about ics, they are perfect for each orthers, i used to be nokia fan, hope sone dev can make isc run on n9
Nokia e7 is my dream machine. With android of course. Or w7 so It can get eventually get android

I would be down for a Nokia N9 if there was a crew like CM that would try to port android on to it. By realistically I don't think that will happen, phone's not available in the US, CAN, or UK. And getting it off ebay is roughly $650, but I just might get it, sigh...
After reading up on the N9 I couldn't resist and got one. I had the Sony Arc as well and I been with Nokia until they messed up with the n97. But the N9 is another monster, really sleek design the OS is beautiful and colors on the screen really jumps. The black color looks really vivid and nice. I am now waiting for someone to hack android or can port android apps to the N9.
I would buy an n9 if someone ported ICS... just too nice a piece of kit to not own
Def a pretty phone. Android should really be present.
i will get n9, if someone port ics on it.
i'm working in high tech store in Italy and officially the N9 is not sold there, but we got one in the shop and is amazing; i really fell in love with that phone (you can never forget your first love )
i do want to buy it for myself, but what it bothers me is the lack of possible applications to install on the phone. an android porting on that device will be amazing.
is there a crazy guy that has tried an android porting on that device before?
also the original meego software looks pretty well and hands on runs smoothly and seems not having trouble at all, but i had only a quick 5 minutes test on the phone. what worries me is that the phone will left alone with no further support because it's the only one with meego software.
already done look at this video with meego operating 5 different OS search nokia on google and u will the link
Yeah I had SGS2 and got an N9 instead, mainly BECAUSE of the OS.
Android is slow on appswitching (at least the versions Ive run, where youd have to either exit the app, open task manager, then select from a list of icons, or you could hold the menubutton for a bit, then select an app from a list of icons).
ICS might be different, I have no idea how taskswitching is done on it.
However, I will say that the N9 rocks ass and it would be fun to dualboot ICS/Harmattan.
Also, to the above poster, its not allready done. A chinese fake version of the N9 with a 3.8" resistive touchscreen, dualsim and 1.3mp camera can, though. Also it comes with porn and talking tomcat. So theres that.
Just had to throw my hat into the ring. I am ridiculously tempted to purchase the N9. Damn thing is just too attractive.
I was really hoping for some community love but that may just be due to my HD2. Leo users have been Spoilt Rotten.
I see even a hint of android development and caution is out the window. Take my money.
Man I hope they boot leg the E7!

In the mean time i got an N9 for christmas, and the MeeGo OS built in is working pretty good, ha some features that i really love, like completely unified address book and unified messaging system, which slows me to modify the device.
On the other side, the are really few apps developed for meego os, that really pushes me to switch to another OS...
Mmm hard choice...
Awerellwv I bring your attention to Alien Dalvik(google it I cant post links)
Running android apps at native speed seems to negate the lack of apps issue. Assuming it all works as planned.
I've convinced myself I want an N9. Possibly just because that Cyan model looks fantastic. I would really love to see ongoing android development though, Knowing the device would keep up with the times is a big deal.
Now to just find the right price. If you really want to switch phones(and you have a cyan N9) I would be interested.

i have the cyan one in the shop, but i bought for myself the black one, which looks every day better and better. Have to admit, tough, that the cyan one looks gorgeus, i will suggest bo buy it if you don't plan to use covers for the phone.
White 64GB N9
I have had since a few days the latest white 64GB version of the N9 and I must say, it's quite an incredible device!
I can't even imagine why Nokia went the WP7 way (beside some fresh cash certainly paid by M$).
Of course, there are still some functions & details missing and some things to iron out with Meego (like with WP7), but it's a very stable and fast OS (I'm impressed how fast Opera is loading!). I must add that it's still loaded with the 10.2011.34 Harmattan version, the latest 20.2011.40 hasn't yet been released for this specific model.
I just love the 3 screens idea, especially the "running tasks" screen, where you have access to all of the running apps and can either switch to the wanted one or close it/them. Why is it so complicated for other OS's to implement such a simple and easily accessible task manager??
The only downside I can see is the lack of applications. Only the true Linux developers will continue porting apps to this wonderful smartphone, and if we could get android applications to run on it, it would be great. And when I say run on it, it's preferably run on Meego, using Alien Dalvik or whatever other way.
If this is not possible, of course dual booting or ICS alone would be a solution, although I like the fact we're running an almost pure Linux/Debian machine, with an interesting touchscreen interface.
Hopefully Nokia will keep reading all of the N9 dedicated forums and will keep a Meego (or whatever it will be named in the future) branch of handsets, and of course supporting it/us.

Great S-Pen apps for AOSP,etc

Do you love stock Android but wish it had S-PEN features? Well i do too..so i found this article by zedomax( Im sure you guys know him )
http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-tutorials/galaxy-note-2-s-note-app-alternatives-for-s-pen/ which shows 3 good app replacements for the S-pen in AOSP i like the "G note app" out of all the three (it looks alot and feels alot like the samsung one) Hope this helps you guys out..

Opinions so far

Are you still feeling happy with that device? What would be your pros and cons of this device? For how much time you're thinking to keep it?
My pros:
Good camera quality
Quite fast (only Sammy's sh*ts makes it slow
Big devs support
Good audio quality
Cons:
Very, very boring UI but luckily we can customize it
It's very hard to use it with one hand, and sometimes I am feeling too lazy to use it with two hands
Design looks cheap
Hardware buttons could be more sensitive
Missing camera button
Power button might stuck, so I am avoiding to use as often as possible
Cons
Lack of Exynos sources - Devs have hard time with AOSP
Touchwiz UI is childish - Looks like something from "The Early Learning Centre"
Casing chips easily and cracks with no effort
Poor multi tasking in Touchwiz roms.
Quicky dated, aesthetically
SDS
Poor warranty handling in the above case
Dodgy EFS problems
Camera not great with AOSP roms. Toss up between performance and UI vs camera.
Pros
Nice thin "slate" feel in the hand
Not Pink in colour
Still reasonably quick with AOSP
Negative for me is lack of true development .
Cut and paste sammy roms .#
Same old same old Android roms .
Lack of fluidity in much of the design and apps its still nowhere near as user friendly as it could be .
SDS and poor warranty from Samsung is not a recommend and likewise the multiple modems .
Samsung / network upgrade path is far to complicated .
Kies is a bad piece of software .
Saying that i shall keep until a significantly better phone forces me to change or even go back to non smart for the phone part .
Dumb phone + 7inch Tablet + 12inch Tablet for home use .
Well, to be honests i'm pretty happy with my S3.
Only cons i can find is the really, really poor (for a 700 euros device) materials quality.
The UI is quite user friendly (in my opinion), well it suffer some lag here and there but (for me) it's really rare (and i'm on no root, stock device).
Plus we will get soon the 4.3 upgrade, and here we will see more improvements for our "baby"... most of all the REAL multicore support, that must "kill" once and for all the lags.
The camera is so good (i'm not a photographer or photo professional user), i find the pictures i snap of good quality and with sammy apps i can modify them however i like. I repeat, i'm not a pro but i love to take a huge number of picture when i'm around with my friends or girl, and my S3 is the best for that job (i don't have to carry around extra weight as other cameras).
There comes now another pro that most of other devices haven't: external SD card.
That's something that any device must have in 2013 becouse of the better cameras (that mean huge dimension for each snapped pic), "consolle like" games (someone is 1-2gb ....) etc. etc....
Now for the "comparison" with a newer phone, my girl have a S4 and i tell you i would never chenge my S3 for it or ever for a HTC one (that anyone is crazy for at the moment)... don't get me wrong, S4 and HTC One are really great devices, but i find useless to drain out your poket of all your moneys, for a slightly better upgrade... Plus with 4.3, S3 will get a lot of S4 features too.
I'll buy a new phone when an amazing Nexus/Galaxy S will be released, but it must be something that will make me really "WOW".

Is that really true?
I feel both AOSP and Samsung based roms equally smooth... (Slimed Samsung roms of course)

Touchwiz ROMs lag instead of managing memory correctly in my experience. Multi Tasking is much smoother on AOSP
I find the phone OK I really like the amoled screen but I think it time to upgrade to 1080p
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
with the newest omni 4.4 nightly, i'm quite OK with the hardware.
however, i do not like samsung's "we are the centre of the world" behaviour, so most probably it will be my last samsung phone. on the other hand, other producers seem to act similarly (think of the sony z1 camera/unlocked desaster, which i do not expect to get fixed in reasonable time)...

Why doesn't Samsung update the Touchwiz UI for older devices getting 4.4.2 KitKat?

This is just a thought I had. I currently have the S5 with the new Touchwiz UI. I was just wondering. Samsung has released KitKat on older devices like the S4, Note 2 and Note 3. Why do they keep the older UI on those devices? I feel like the S5 UI, as far as notification toggles, settings menu and textures, should be available to users of the older devices. One thing I have to give Apple credit for is that when a new OS, like iOS7 releases, they update the UI on all devices even 3 year old ones like the iPhone 4.
I know this is not a big deal, as our Galaxy devices do a lot more even with an older UI, I just feel like it would unify the Galaxy ecosystem more. Anyone using a phone that is less than a year old but with the latest software update should enjoy the same new UI as newer devices. I also look at HTC as an example. They are updating the One and older HTC devices from 2013 to the Sense 6 UI. Samsung really should start doing this.
Thoughts or further discussion would be great.

Pssh. The TouchWiz user interface is laggy enough. Trying to use the one on the S5 on one of the older devices would probably make it even worse. Plus it's just another marketing ploy to try and get you to buy the newer ones. I can't stand the TW UI either way, new or old. I think it's bloated and hideous. I buy their phones for the hardware, not the software, but I'm pretty sure I'm done with them with all the recent security crap they keep throwing on there. Not allowing you to downgrade officially, Knox, locked bootloaders, etc. They still make great phones, just not for what I need.
There is ways to mod it on the older devices. I current use a note 3 with S5 UI on it. I like the new look.

IDK about that. and also older phones like the S4 and Note 3 can handle the S5 UI, the hardware would support it. I actually find the S5 UI to lag a lot less than the S4, as they have cut out a lot of the crap.

[Q] Galaxy S4 TouchWiz UI on Galaxy S5

Hello there!
Please, can anyone tell me if it is possible to change to look of my S5 device, to look like an S4 on KitKat?
My first Andorid phone was the Galaxy S3 because I was in love with TouchWiz. I dislike the way stock Android looks.
I was not a Samsung fan, previously I had a Samsung Omnia because I liked the design and being a Microsoft fan, I bought it, but never liked TouchWiz there... I imediately disabled it and left the default Windows Mobile look. When Microsoft went to Windows Phone 7 and so, I've cosidered going to Andorid. I don't like Apple because all icons follows the same square rounded pattern. I like the icons to be different like on Microsoft Windows, so not all icons to be in a circle or square, or other geometric form.
When I bought the S5 I was a little dissapointed because the TouchWiz was changing into bad lookings but with Lollipop... awwwww!
I dislike the new Contacts App with those small circles for pictures... Sincerelly I love my wife S4 i9506. I've decided not to upgrade her to Lollipop, to make her phone uglly like mine.
So, is there a possiblility to run a version of Lollipop or KitKat on S5 while having a look of an S4? Even if the menu and home keys will behave like they normaly do on S5.
Thank you!
Mods and cyanogen while using themes. There is not other way
Bad taste
A taste is a taste. Well, if it happens that you like Sotck Android, then, you may have a "bad taste" Come on! Every people I talked with, having a Galaxy S5, don't like the way Lollipop looks at all.

Are you more familiar or wanted to have Apple products? I dislike Lollopop becuase black used to look better on amoled displays. Other things that I'm not likeing on Lollipop are those bright colors, the white baground when opening calls, having no button delimiters on phonedialer and the most anyoing one for me... the Contacts app which have those small circled pictures. Oh... let's say being clircles, let's say ok, even if I still don't like the ideea, but they are too small on Samsung firmware. They are a little bigger on let's say LG G3s.
Anyway, no matter what you say... S4 on KitKat looks A LOT BETTER than the Lollipop UGLYNESS!
I'm on Lollipop from January but I cannot accept its stupid GUI. Well, I'm a graphic designer, I know that these days we've embraced this flat, simple ugly things that Microsoft started with Windows 8 and Google and others followed their stupidity with "Material Design"
